Protohistory of Iberian Peninsula

Este libro tiene por objeto continuar explorando el valor histórico y arqueológico del Cerro Macareno (La Rinconada, Sevilla), enclave paradigmático de la implantación de las formas de vida urbana en el Guadalquivir y de su dinámica comercial durante la Protohistoria, dado que constituye un lugar clave para el estudio de las comunidades que habitaron el sur de la península ibérica durante la Edad del Hierro. Las intervenciones de emergencia realizadas en los años setenta del siglo XX permitieron registrar un conjunto de hornos cerámicos, además de otras estructuras y depósitos anejos pertenecientes a un taller alfarero que estaría en funcionamiento, al menos, entre finales del siglo V e inicios del IV a.C., convirtiéndose en la evidencia más antigua constatada hasta ese momento de producción alfarera en la región. Desde una perspectiva cronológica y geográfica, los trabajos compilados en este volumen profundizan en el análisis de la producción de ánforas derivadas de los prototipos fenicios arcaicos en el cuadrante suroccidental de la península ibérica durante la II Edad de Hierro y los primeros siglos de la presencia romana.

L’any 1972 J. Maluquer de Motes dirigí l’excavació de l’assentament del primer ferro de la
Ferradura (Ulldecona, Montsià). Immediatament, aquells treballs prengueren una notable importància. Els resultats publicats en el seu moment representen encara avui dia una referència ineludible de qualsevol estudi relacionat amb la protohistòria antiga de les Terres de l’Ebre i les del Sénia. Quaranta anys després d’aquella única actuació, però, resulta evident la necessitat de revisar aquells treballs i contrastar-los amb les noves dades obtingudes a les excavacions d’assentaments coetanis propers com Sant Jaume, la Moleta del Remei, la Cogula, el Puig de la Misericòrdia, el Puig de la Nau o el Castell d’Ulldecona. Amb aquest objectiu, el GRAP (Grup de Recerca en Arqueologia Protohistòrica) de la Universitat de Barcelona va reprendre l’any 2009 els treballs d’excavació d’aquest nucli. En aquest article presentem un resum dels primers resultats derivats d’aquesta tasca incipient.

La Ferradura és un assentament de la primera edat del ferro (650-575 ane) ubicat als darrers estreps meridionals de la serra de Montsià, a la comarca catalana del mateix nom. Fou objecte d’importants treballs d’excavació l’any 1972, de la mà de J. Maluquer de Motes. Des de l’any 2009 el Grup de Recerca en Arqueologia Protohistòrica (GRAP) de la Universitat de Barcelona ha reprès els treballs. En aquest article presentem una síntesi dels principals resultats assolits fins ara. / La Ferradura is a settlement dated to the early Iron Age (650-575 BC) located in the southern foothills of the Montsià mountains, in the Catalan region of the same name. It was the subject of major excavations in 1972, by J. Maluquer de Motes. Since 2009 the Grup de Recerca en Arqueologia Protohistòrica (GRAP) of the University of Barcelona has resumed work. This article presents a summary of the main results achieved so far.

We present the results of the excavation inside the main tower at coll del Moro, as well as the re examination of a stratigraphic section made outside the tower in the 1980s, and the report on another exterior section from the 1990s that has remained unpublished until now. All this provides a sequence starting in the 6th century bcE, when the towercistern architectural programme was built, and ending in the Roman period, thus allowing the evolution of the settlement to be seen. Special emphasis is placed on the early horizon presented by a record revealing finds from the south of the Iberian Peninsula with Phoenician and Iberian features, which precede the first wheel made Iberian ware. All this, and the presence of a sculpture datable to the 6th century bcE, make a significant contribution to our knowledge of the historical horizon known as houses-tower.

We examine the progress achieved over the last 40 years in researching about the end of the Iron Age in Turdetania and the impact of the Roman conquest on local cultures. To this purpose, we carry out a review that comprises the different aspects in which we can appreciate the continuities and transformations that took place in the ways of life of these populations: urbanism and architecture, organization and strategies for the exploitation of the territory, economic, productive and commercial structures, the domestic sphere and the field of beliefs. We also examine the variety and complexity of the human groups that lived together in this region when the Romans arrived, which contrasts with the simplifying and stereotyped image offered by the Greco-Latin literary testimonies.

In this paper we edit a small sheet of lead found in the Iberian site of Pico de los Ajos (Yátova) in the 2018 campaign. The sheet appeared folded and it contains an Iberian inscription of only one line on each side that most likely forms a single full text. Its formal characteristics are uncommon, the closest parallel being the votive lead sheets of the site of El Amarejo. The presence of the kutuŕ element, frequent in rock votive inscriptions, would also invite to a religious interpretation. From the palaeographic point of view, it should be noted that this is an explicitly dual text, due to the convivence of the two variants of the signs te and ŕ. Although the archaeological context of its amortization has a chronology of the end of the 2nd century BC or early 1st century BC, this new lead sheet presents an archaic palaeography, perhaps even from the 4th century BC. This would be well explained because the lead sheet has appeared in a building dedicated to the recycling of metal objects, being at that time only one more metal object, out from its original context.

En este trabajo editamos una pequeña lámina de plomo hallada en el Pico de los Ajos (Yátova) en la campaña de 2018. La lámina apareció plegada y contiene una inscripción ibérica de una sola línea en cada cara que muy probablemente configure un solo texto completo. Sus características formales son poco comunes, siendo el paralelo más cercano el de las láminas votivas de El Amarejo. La presencia del elemento kutuŕ, frecuente en las inscripciones votivas rupestres, también apuntaría a una interpretación religiosa. Desde el punto de vista paleográfico, cabe señalar que se trata de un texto explícitamente dual, ya que conviven en él las dos variantes de te y ŕ. A pesar de que el contexto arqueológico de su amortización tiene una cronología de finales del s. II a. C. o principios del s. I a. C., este nuevo plomo presenta una paleografía arcaica, quizás incluso del s. IV a. C. Esto se explicaría bien por el hecho de aparecer en un edificio dedicado al reciclaje de objetos metálicos, siendo en ese momento la lámina sólo un objeto metálico más, fuera de su contexto original.

Les seves característiques formals són poc comuns, essent el paral·lel més proper el de les làmines votives del Amarejo. La presència de l'element kutuŕ, freqüent a les inscripcions votives rupestres, també apuntaria a una interpretació religiosa. Des del punt de vista paleogràfic, cal assenyalar que es tracta d'un text explícitament dual, ja que hi conviuen les dues variants de te i ŕ. Tot i que el context arqueològic de la seva amortització té una cronologia de finals del s. II a. C. o principis del s. I a. C., aquest nou plom presenta una paleografia arcaica, potser fins i tot del s. IV a. C. Això s'explicaria bé pel fet d'aparèixer en un edifici dedicat al reciclatge d'objectes metàl·lics, essent en aquest moment la làmina només un objecte metàl·lic més, fora del seu context original.

Sant Jaume is a settlement dated to the early Iron Age (650-575 BC) located in the southern foothills of the Montsià mountains, in the Catalan region of the same name. It has been under excavation by the Grup de Recerca en Arqueologia Protohistòrica (GRAP) of the University of Barcelona from 1997 to the present. It is interpreted as a fortified, isolated residence, center of a chiefdom called Sant Jaume Complex, which also includes Moleta del Remei (Alcanar), Ferradura (Ulldecona), Castell (Ulldecona) and Cogula (Ulldecona). This article presents a summary of the main results achieved so far.

We present a reflection on the genesis and development of the first complex societies in the north-eastern Iberian Peninsula. It is generally agreed that the first records of complex societies with a certain degree of consolidation in this area are linked to the appearance of the Iberian Culture in the mid 6th century BC. We believe, however, that during the immediately preceding period (Early Iron Age, 7th century BC) there were already some isolated phenomena of hierarchical societies.

We exemplify our proposal with a case study, the Sant Jaume Complex. This is a group of five settlements located on hills, close to each other on the southern coast of Catalonia, some 20 km. south of the mouth of the river Ebro. Their characteristics suggest that these settlements were inhabited by a single community, and that each one had different, complementary functions. This community established intense, lasting trade relations with the Phoenician seafarers. According to our working hypothesis, the socio-political system of organization of this settlement unit corresponds to what social anthropology terms a “chiefdom”, albeit an incipient one.

La necròpolis d’Esquarterades va ser descoberta de manera fortuïta el 2013. Després d’un primer sondeig de verificació realitzat el mateix any per l’empresa Àtics, un equip d’investigadors de la Universitat de Barcelona, l’Institut Català d’Arqueologia Clàssica i el Museu d’Arqueologia de Catalunya han desenvolupat un projecte de recerca arqueològica, amb dues campanyes d’excavació en els anys 2014 i 2015. Els treballs d’excavació han documentat les restes d’una necròpolis ibèrica del segle V o inicis del IV A.C., amb una vintena de sepultures formades per urnes de ceràmica a torn o a mà, cobertes amb tapadora de ceràmica i dipositades en fosses segellades amb una llosa de pedra. Algunes d’aquestes urnes estaven molt malmeses, mentre que d’altres es conserven pràcticament intactes. Els aixovars funeraris estan formats per elements de bronze dipositats dins les urnes, fonamentalment d’ornamentació personal, mentre a l’exterior apareixen objectes de ferro, sobretot peces d’armament. Actualment s’està realitzant els treballs de laboratori (micro-excavació de les urnes, consolidació i estudi dels materials arqueològics) i properament es realitzarà l’estudi antropològic de les restes òssies. / The necropolis of Esquarterades was discovered by chance in 2013. After an initial verification survey conducted the same year by the archaeology company Àtics, a team of researchers from the University of Barcelona, the Catalan Institute of Classical Archaeology and the Archaeological Museum of Catalonia have developed a research project with two archaeological excavation campaigns in the years 2014 and 2015. The digs have uncovered the remains of an Iberian necropolis of the 5th century – beginnings of the 4th century B.C., with twenty graves consisting of wheeled or hand-made ceramic urns covered with ceramic lids, and placed in pits sealed by stone slabs. Some of these urns are severely damaged, whilst others are preserved virtually intact. The grave goods consist of bronze artefacts deposited inside the urns, mostly personal ornaments, as well as iron objects, mainly pieces of armament, deposited outside the urns. We are currently carrying out the laboratory studies (micro-excavation of the urns, consolidation and study of archaeological materials) and the anthropological study of the skeletal remains will soon be started.

In the beginning of 1974, the Ministry of Education and Science published a decree declaring a series of sites of public interest, which were considered representative of Tartessian culture. The fascination caused by the archaeological discoveries that took place in Andalusia in the mid-twentieth century also led to an awareness of the risk of losing a large part of this heritage due to urban and rural development. We will examine the real scope of this provision through the particularised analysis of all the cases and their subsequent joint assessment, including both the scientific exploitation and the protection, conservation and dissemination measures adopted in these sites from the enactment of the Decree to the present day. The main conclusion reached was that the application of the Decree had poor continuity and was highly uneven, partly due to the political changes that took place in the following years.

El jaciment protohistòric de Sant Jaume – Mas d’en Serrà (Alcanar, Montsià) ha proporcionat un conjunt de restes òssies d’origen animal que denoten una explotació dels recursos tant aquàtics com terrestres. Els elements faunístics que conformen el present estudi procedeixen del sector 1/nord del jaciment, constituït per un seguit d’àmbits interpretats com a espais per a l’emmagatzematge (de diferents contenidors i productes agropecuaris) i l’estabulació d’animals. L’estudi zooarqueològic d’aquests elements, a partir de les dades obtingudes en la caracterització anatòmica, taxonòmica i tafonòmica de les restes, ens ajuda, principalment, a detectar certs patrons de comportament al voltant de l’aprofitament dels recursos animals i, sobretot, a perfilar l’activitat econòmica que es realitzava en aquest sector.

This paper presents the preliminary results of a study of wheel-thrown ceramics from three archaeological sites located in western Andalusia: El Carambolo, Huelva (La Joya) and Setefilla, combining X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and thin-section petrography. The analysis undertaken provides useful data to define clay matrix, temper and elemental composition of local Phoenician style ceramics. The first results indicate a link between archaeological sites and the elemental composition of the analyzed sherds. This study shows that the ceramic wheel-thrown pottery gathered from the investigated sites is not homogeneous and presents a variability of petrographic and chemical properties.
