Box 1. Flora of Karnataka on an interactive CD-ROM The compiled data are now available on an interactive CD from which the distribution of the species can be generated up to taluka level. The CD has three search modules: (1) The first module offers geographic richness and distribution of species, genera and families at the state, district and taluka levels. The program offers spatial zooming functions to different geographic levels and also telescoping back and forth along the taxonomic hierarchies. (2) The second module facilitates acquisition of details on plant species and geographic distribution based on common and scientific names, eventually linking it to module 1. The common names for the 4758 species are compiled in 32 languages and dialects. The module also offers the taxonomic classification of species up to phylum level according to Cronquist 13. (3) In the third module, line diagrams of floral features, colour photographs and other relevant images of about 1000 species are made available. The vascular plant endemism of Guanahacabibes district (Western Cuba) is studied and its origin analysed in comparison with other phytogeographic Cuban areas. Résumé. On étudie l'endémisme du districte Guanahacabibes (Cuba occidentale) et on fait l'analyse de son origine. Il est comparé avec l'endemisme d'autres districtes et d'autres secteurs phytogéographiques de Cuba. Zusammenfassung. México es uno de los centros de origen del género Vitis. Actualmente, en el banco de germoplasma de Zumpahuacán, México, se cuenta con más de 70 accesiones de Vitis de los estados de México, Puebla y Morelos. A wood species called molave (Vitex parviflora Juss.) naturally grows in tropical nations like the Philippines. In the marginal uplands, molave is also a plant that is advised for afforestation. The ecological niche of the molave tree is significant to the balance of the terrestrial ecosystems. The trees serve as producers of the biotic organism and provide shelter, oxygen and sequester carbon dioxide. The trees also provide support that upholds the land from erosion and landslides. According to FAO (2004), people in the county continue to unlawfully cut these trees despite the Philippines' restriction on doing so, which results in an annual deforestation rate of roughly 2.48%, compared to 1.4% in the 1990s. Some of the conservation plans of the government include in situ conservation, integrated protected area systems, geographic mapping of species distribution, and education and training activities for conservation planning. Therefore, the molave tree in the Botanical Garden of University of the Philippines Los Banos has a vital role in controlling the balance of the ecosystems together with the living organisms in the area and must be sustained and protected.

Land of Turkey is divided into three distinctive floristic regions (namely Euro-Siberian, Mediterranean and Irano-Turanian) due to the differences in its topographic structure and climatic features. Therefore, diversity of grassy and woody plant species is higher in the country than that of the countries in its surrounding and Europe. Even though biodiversity of Turkey has been determined in an overall sense, the number and the quality of studies carried out with this aim should be increased. It is of vitally importance to determine existent plant species and take the endangered species under conservation. As the consequence of the present study, it was found that twenty two grassy and fifteen woody plant species in Sarıkamış with functional and aesthetic characteristics could be used in landscape architecture planning. An additional finding was that Cephaloria sparsipilosa Matthews, Verbascum oreophylum C Koch, Alchemilla sintenisii Rothm, Papaver fugax Poiret were among endemic species while Trifolium trichocephalum Panc. was among rare species. It was also focused in the study that determination and use of native species not requiring extra maintenance needs should be considered in landscape works since the study area has harsh and extreme climatic features.

Phanera jampuiensis (Leguminosae: Caesalpinioideae: Cercideae), a new species from Tripura, India, is described and illustrated. P. jampuiensis resembles P. chalcophylla, but differs in having chartaceous leaves, lamina with strigose hairs mainly on abaxial midveins, fawn tomentose floral buds and shorter filament and style.

Occurrence of coconut large verrucosis in the State of Ceará, Brazil The occurrence of coconut (Cocos nucifera) large verrucosis is reported for the first time in producing areas of the State of Ceará, Brazil. The main symptoms of the disease are necrotic lesions on the folioles and petioles upon which many erumpent ascocarps are formed.

Post-harvest basal rot of coconut fruits in the State of Ceará, Brazil A new post-harvest disease of coconut (Cocos nucifera) was recently detected in fruits exported to European countries. The main symptoms are the blacking and cracking of basal parts of the fruits. Water oozing may occurs as the infection progresses. The fungus Lasiodiplodia theobromae has been frequently isolated from the lesions. Inoculation tests proved that this pathogen is the causal agent of the coconut fruit basal rot. This is the first occurrence of this post-harvest disease in Brazil.

Microcenters of diversity of crop plants are small geographic areas, while regions of diversity are large and relatively diffuse areas that conserve high or moderate genetic diversity, respectively. This study aimed to identify microcenters and regions of maize diversity in different areas of lowland South America, in Brazil and Uruguay, proposing a new methodological approach based on ethnobotanical, morphological, and molecular indicators and genetic diversity indices. The collection areas considered microcenters were surrounded by a buffer of 50 km (area: 7,850 km 2) and the regions by buffers of 150 km (area: 70,650 km 2) to 300 km (area: 282,600 km 2). The study was carried out in parts of the biomes of Amazonia, Caatinga, Cerrado, Atlantic Forest, and Pampa. A total of 261 farmers participated, of whom 129 were interviewed. Four microcenters and four regions of maize diversity were identified, showing: (i) richness and genetic diversity of landraces (mostly unique to each region) and richness of maize races; (ii) the presence of landraces under diversification by current human action as diagnosed by sociocultural aspects and diversity of uses attributed to landraces; and, (iii) maize germplasm conservation areas, on microregional and regional geographic scales. Indicators of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats were identified in the areas involved in the study.

The paper presents the results of a 50-year research of the genepool of the winter wheat from the world’s largest wheat collection of N.I. Vavilov Institute of Plant Industry (VIR) to investigate its resistance to the abiotic stress factors of the Moscow region and see how closely it matches the attributes of a wheat ideotype as postulated by N.I. Vavilov in 1935. The critical years in studying the wheat’s winter resistance were 10 years out of 50: excessive water saturation during the year 2013; soil drought in 1988; and atmospheric drought in 1972 and 2010. Literature data on the distribution of Enicostema verticillatum, the sole New-World species of the genus, are reviewed. Old records for Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Florida are dismissed, the occurrence in the Dominican Republic (as a possibly naturalised alien) is confirmed. New gatherings demonstrate the probably fairly recent naturalisation of the species in Cienfuegos Province, Central Cuba. A treatment of the genus and species in the format of the Flora de la Republica de Cuba is supplied, to serve as a complement to the Gentianaceae treatment in that Flora.

Lyonia santiagoana se describe como una nueva especie para flora de Cuba, endémica de las elevaciones costeras entre Mar Verde y Baconao,Santiago de Cuba. Constituye la única especie de Lyonia en Cuba que vive en matorral xeromorfo subcostero. Laespecie es afín a L. glandulosa de la cual difiere por su superficie foliar adaxial espaciadamente lepidota, lisa y lustrosa, flores mayormente pentámeras, con corolas mayores de 5-6 mm de largo, el pedicelo articulado al cáliz y la cápsula de 3-3,5 mm de ancho. Based on the success of some Andean products such as quinoa, potatoes or maca in international food trade and the growing environmental degradation facing developing countries, resulting from intensive exploitation activities; Our research seeks to show the trend that is assumed from the academic / scientific community and public officials in the food sector in Peru, against the need to maintain sustainable various ancestral modes of agricultural production (case quinoa), for it analyze quantitative and qualitative obtained from public institutions and Peruvian universities.

A cultura do coqueiro vem se expandindo no estado da Paraíba, destacando-se a microrregião do Alto Piranhas. O objetivo do trabalho foi determinar a etiologia e caracterizar o progresso de uma doença foliar do coqueiro híbrido. As observações concernentes ao progresso da doença foram realizadas mensalmente, sendo determinadas incidência, severidade e taxas de infecção. Um fungo do gênero Pestalotiopsis (Pestalotia) foi isolado, sendo comprovada a sua patogenicidade. As incidências da doença, em todas as avaliações, corresponderam a 100%. No progresso da severidade da doença, as taxas de infecção foram negativas, sendo os valores da severidade mais elevados quando se verificou a ocorrência de microácaro e cochonilha.

Over the years, women have been noted as having a special relationship with the environment due to their responsibilities for the family and concern for the well-being of future generations (Westermann et al., 2005). This special relationship is found often in the literature, but is largely ignored in conservation efforts (Jackson, 1993 ;). Studies investigating Community Based Conservation (CBC) programs have documented the lack of involvement by women and have shown that programs involving women have better outcomes than those without (Agarwal, 2009b; Soe and Sato, 2012). Groups with more women tend to have better collaboration, solidarity, and conflict resolution, because women tend to build more relational social capital than men (Westermann et al., 2005). Agarwal (2009b) found that community forest groups with more women showed greater improvement in forest conditions on all indicators, with a 57% higher probability of improvement when the groups had two or more women. This reportedly was due to greater rule compliance, women’s knowledge of plant species, more sustainable methods of resource harvest, and greater cooperation. Women were also found to have strong feelings of forest ownership and continued to monitor illegal activity while performing their daily work (Agarwal, 2009b). Because of the potential benefits of involving women, managers and organizations developing conservation programs are encouraged to include women in their design and implementation

Ipomoea teotitlanica McPherson fue descrita a partir de un espécimen procedente de material de herbario del que se desconocían el fruto y la semilla. En este trabajo se describe el ambiente de la localidad tipo en la que se establece una población de Ipomoea teotitlanica, así como las características estructurales de flor, fruto y semilla. La morfología floral y la estructura de su fruto y semilla corresponden a la descrita para las especies integrantes de la serie Arborescentes: sépalos coriáceos, fruto dehiscente y semillas con largos tricomas marginales.

El artículo tiene como objetivo realizar una reflexión bioética y jurídica del régimen corporativo  alimenticio y la protección jurídica que se otorgan a las invenciones con presencia de organismos  modificados genéticamente (OMG). El método es hermenéutico, el enfoque cualitativo, la técnica  documental-teórica y el instrumento es una matriz de información para la obtención, análisis y reflexión  multidimensional de las categorías de análisis. El documento está dividido en tres partes. Primera parte,  identifica el régimen corporativo alimenticio y el paso de la agricultura tradicional a la agricultura  industrial con presencia de OMG. Segunda parte, la protección jurídica de los fitomejoradores vegetales  en las normas internacionales; en este establecen derechos de propiedad de la modificación genética  vegetal. Tercera parte, reflexión bioética y jurídica del derecho de obtentor vegetal en el régimen  alimenticio en Colombia y las consecuencias medioambientales de las siembras intensivas de  monocultivos. Finalmente, se establecen las conclusiones.

Magyarországon az akác (Robinia pseudoacacia) az egyik legfontosabb állományalkotó egzóta fafaj. Jelentôsége sok más országban is növekszik. Új szelekciós program eredményeként nyolc akácklónt állítottunk elô klónkísérletek és magtermesztô ültetvények létesítése céljából. A tanulmányban mikroszaporítással elôállított akácklónok fiatalkori növekedését és törzsminôségét vizsgáltuk két klónkísérletben homoki termôhelyeken. Tízéves korban az 'MB17D3/4', az 'MB17D3/10', valamint a 'PV 201E2/4' jelû klónok bizonyultak a legígéretesebbeknek a minôségi fatermesztés számára. A szövettenyésztéses szaporítási eljárás megfelelô eszköznek tekinthetô kiváló minôségû egyedek klónos elszaporítására, új távlatokat nyitva a kiválasztott genotípusok gyors és tömeges klónozására.

Despite being located within a primary region of crop diversity, documentation of Tajik crop and crop wild relative (CWR) resources is far from comprehensive, particularly regarding CWR. Here, we compile the first inventory of food CWR of Tajikistan. A total of 549 food CWR taxa belonging to 36 families and 125 genera were documented as occurring in the country. Among them, 71 taxa were recognized as native close relatives of globally important crops (category 1A), 67 as native distant relatives of these crops (1B) and 411 as native taxa with an undetermined relationship to these crops (1C). This documented CWR diversity far exceeds previous scientific assessments for the country and, in doing so, distinguishes the Tajik region from surrounding countries. Within the country, the results indicate a clear gradient of food CWR taxonomic richness from the eastern part of the country (least diversity) to the western part (greatest diversity). This trend adds important new information to the body of literature published by N. I. Vavilov and others, who mainly stressed the importance of the Pamir region (Eastern Tajikistan) for crop and CWR diversity.

In Ethiopia livestock feed shortage and soil acidity are serious problems. In recent years sweet lupins (white and blue species) were introduced as multipurpose crops in the country. However, there is no information about their nodulation potential. This study was conducted to evaluate nodulation potential of these sweet lupins and their effect on nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) content of the soil. Seven lupin varieties were evaluated using factorial arrangement (seven varieties * two inoculations) in a randomized complete block design in two locations for two years. The result showed that effect of inoculation and location was not significant (P > 0.05) on biomass, seed, nodule number and soil parameters. While the effect of variety was significant (P < 0.05) on nodule parameters. Its effect on dry biomass and seed yields was also significant in either of the years. Although the considerable value of crop wild relatives (CWRs) as gene donors is well known, in many crop complexes they are subject to increasing threats from anthropogenic factors. The development of a prioritized inventory of CWR species is an essential step towards the conservation of this vital resource, so in this study, we developed a national inventory of pseudocereal CWR species in Argentina and established ex situ and in situ conservation priorities. The resulting prioritized inventory consisted of 16 species, almost all of which were underrepresented in national and global ex situ gene banks. Similarly, the extant reserve network was found to be insufficient for the preservation of pseudocereal CWRs, especially Chenopodium diversity. Three hotspot groups were identified in the Andean region: northern, central and southern. The northern group has the highest conservation priority because it harbours CWR species from the primary and secondary gene pools, but the central and southern groups are also important because they harbour endemic species that are poorly represented in the extant reserve network. Therefore, new priority areas for protection are necessary for their conservation. This study emphasizes that the conservation of pseudocereal CWRs in Argentina must be maximized using a complementary in situ and ex situ approach.

ABSTRACTIncreasing the number of flowers and pods set, as well as reducing the intensity of their abortion, is of crucial importance for the yielding of leguminous plants. This study examined the effects of the type of soil used and mineral fertilization applied on the generative development of the traditional and self-completing (restricted branching) cultivars of white lupin (Lupinus albus L.), yellow lupin (L. luteus L.) and narrow-lafed lupin (L. angustifolius L.) cultivated under controlled phytotron conditions. Through the revision of the 459 specimens of 36 species of beetles belonging to Hydrophiloidea and Histeroidea deposited in the entomological collection of the Ecology and Sistematis Institute, information is offered about localities and months of capture, where the specimens were found. In some cases, data on habitat, methods of capture, and altitude are also given.

Walnut is a species of high vigour, with relatively slow growth, and the size of trees grows with each year of growth. Accumulation of wood biomass, and respectively, productivity, is a resultant synthesis of physiological processes and interaction of trees with environmental factors. The authors have assessed growth characteristics of genotypes standing on their own roots in the sands area of Oltenia (Romania). In terms of tree height, it ranged from 8.53 m to 18.00 m, while trunk circumference varied between 40 cm and 229 cm, in genotypes with ages between the 16 and 44 years. Environmental factors, by influencing cambium tissue activity, cell differentiation processes, cell walls growth processes, are inducing particular characteristics of annual rings, in terms of size. The average value of growth ring was 7.09 mm, with a minimum of 3.53 mm, a maximum of 13.94 mm and variation coefficient of 40.20%. The obtained results show that climatic and edaphic factors of the culture area are influencing the trees growth and development and indicate a good adaptability of genotypes to these conditions.

Este artículo tiene como objetivo comunicar el estudio adelantado sobre los componentes tangible e intangible que las autoras han realizado a través de la investigación socio-jurídica. Asimismo, plantear acciones que permitan garantizar el manejo integral y autónomo de los territorios, la seguridad alimentaria y el fortalecimiento de la identidad y apropiación cultural de las comunidades locales. De otro lado, señalar la responsabilidad de los Estados con las comunidades locales para que ellas fortalezcan las estrategias y acciones que han venido utilizando desde épocas antiguas, en el establecimiento de una relación armónica con el medio y el desarrollo de sus formas tradicionales de vida.

Resumen. Se confirma la introducción en Cuba de Ludwigia helminthorrhiza (Mart.) H.Hara (Onagraceae), por vía aún desconocida, así como su exitosa naturalización y aumento sostenido de su área de ocupación a lo largo de 40 años. Se analiza la importancia de la cantidad y calidad de sus diásporas para la dispersión y establecimiento en nuevos territorios, así como la efectividad de los agentes dispersores. Se identifican los impactos negativos (dificultades para el manejo de los acuatorios, sedimentación, bloqueo de la entrada de luz, reducción del intercambio de oxígeno y desplazamiento de especies nativas) y positivos (alimento para la fauna y alojamiento de bacterias que reducen la contaminación) de la introducción de esta especie. Se alerta sobre la posible expansión del hidrófito a nuevos reservorios de agua dulce en el país.

La presencia de un taxón no identificado, que responde a las características generales de la familia Araceae, en condiciones de cultivo en la provincia Camagüey, genera la necesidad de precisar aspectos taxonómicos y culturales en torno a este. Objetivo: revelar la nomenclatura, posición taxonómica y descripción del taxón, a la vez que se discuten sus principales singularidades dentro de la familia Araceae, así como su utilidad, tanto comprobada como potencial. Métodos: Especímenes representados en los jardines de la ciudad de Camagüey fueron estudiados mediante la utilización de métodos de investigación propios de la botánica, como el trabajo con colecciones, el uso de catálogos y claves, así como la descripción e ilustración científica. Resultados: Se establecen precisiones sobre la nomenclatura, se describe el taxón, a la vez que se propone una clave analítica para diferenciarlo del resto de las aráceas cubanas. Se discuten aspectos relacionados con su comprobada utilidad para la purificación del aire, así como su potencial importancia medicinal y nutricional. Conclusiones: Zamioculcas zamiifolia (Lodd.) Engl., deberá ser considerada en lo adelante, en los catálogos y publicaciones especializadas sobre la flora cubana. El potencial de Z. zamiifolia, para el mejoramiento de la calidad del aire y por sus efectos antioxidantes y citotóxicos, ofrecen una perspectiva interesante para la futura gestión de este recurso fitogenético y merecen su estudio en el contexto cubano.
