Non sorprende la fatica letteraria di Cesare Capitti, che riversa in queste pagine la stessa passione che ha guidato il suo lavoro presso l'Assessorato al Territorio e Ambiente della Regione Siciliana. Sorprende piuttosto la caparbietà con cui l'autore insiste a parlare di architettura ed urbanistica a partire dalla Dottrina Sociale della Chiesa. Nel corpus della elaborazione magisteriale su temi tanto importanti per la vita di relazione degli esseri umani non c'è una sola parola né sull'architettura né sull'urbanistica, a meno che non si vogliano considerare attinenti le dichiarazioni dedicate all'ambiente e alle favelas, che non toccano l'essenza dei problemi da cui sono afflitte le città contemporanee. Ci si può chiedere il perché di tanto assordante silenzio. Potrebbe trattarsi di un principio di fondo del Magistero della Chiesa, in base al quale le questioni temporali-laddove non toccano temi di fede e di morale-vanno lasciate alla libera riflessione dei fedeli laici. In tal caso, però, chi di dovere non si sarebbe reso conto del fatto che il modello di città diffuso oggi in tutto il mondo è stato elaborato in un contesto intellettuale anticristiano e antiumano.

La speranza è una nota caratteristica dell’autore, che ha impregnato con la sua fragranza i capitoli di questo libro. Auspichiamo che la sua fatica possa giungere in alto, inducendo i responsabili del Magistero della Chiesa ad interrogarsi sui principi di quel nuovo umanesimo che potrebbe correggere i principi teorici della Carta di Atene e gettare le basi per la nascita di città a misura d’uomo. Senza di ciò, le lamentele sugli inferni urbani della nostra epoca rischiano di rimanere chiacchiere da bar.

In this article i will analyze different urban design strategies based on the “bottom-up” approach, describing their main principles and working methods, and proving their potential as an alternative to traditional planning techniques. The objective is to introduce new urban design strategies based on a more open and sensitive approach to local urban dynamics, allowing the emergence of more spontaneous, adaptive and resilient urban settlements. This will lead, also, to the rethinking of the architect’s role in the planning process, leaving apart the image of the classical designer in order to adopt a new role, based on the promotion and channelling of the collective intelligence.

In order to deepen in the comprehension of this focus, we will develop a general mapping of the main tendencies and working groups existing today in the field of the “bottom-up” urban design, grouping them into three categories: “Algorithmic strategies”, “Platform strategies” and “Pattern strategies”.The article concludes analyzing the common features of these three strategies, and thinking about their possible role in the future development of urban planning.

This article adopts the premise that the work of Nikos A. Salingaros marks a true beginning for seriously regaining what cultures and societies have lost throughout the years through the work of many architects, urbanists, and decision makers. It explores the three monographs he has written and views them as a new “De Architectura” for 21st century architecture and urbanism. The article reflects on Vitruvius’s De Architectura and sheds light on selected evolutionary aspects of architecture and the anti-vitruvian practices that continued for hundreds of years, but intensified over the last century. It reviews the attitudes of anti-vitruvian architects that contributed to severe socio-cultural and contextual problematics. The views adopted in this article are based on the conviction that the theories and writings of Salingaros are a reaction and a conscious positive response to these practices, and that these theories will invigorate the creation of humane and livable environments.

The rooftop is a vivid spatial culture in Egyptian cities and an integral part of the urban fabric, yet it has not been integrated within the urban design educational aspect. This paper aims to highlight the importance of facilitating rooftop activation in architecture and urbanism studios, stressing the vital role of rooftops as a spatial prophylactic design in the post-pandemic city. The paper embraces an exploratory approach through which the reader gains a theoretical insight into the nature of urban design education in Egyptian schools. It adopts Nikos Salingaros' concept of living patterns, i.e. creating socio-geometric design patterns to establish a healthy environment. The findings propose a novel design theory, prophylaxis, which can be facilitated in design studios to address post-pandemic cities. Additionally, they reveal the expected role of architects and urbanists in tackling inequalities in designing spaces.

Dopo la serie di progetti per la ricostruzione del Corviale, pubblichiamo alcuni interventi a proposito del famoso quartiere ZEN di Palermo. Essi nascono da una conferenza del 2 marzo scorso e sono proiettati verso un’altra che si terrà il 5 maggio prossimo. Entrambe orientate a offrire un rimedio concreto alle condizioni disumane in cui vive la gente di questa zona periferica.
L’obiettivo è infatti quello di elaborare un progetto di massima per il nuovo Borgo S. Filippo Neri. In questo modo si potranno sensibilizzare le istituzioni a spendere oculatamente i fondi esistenti per migliorare una volta per tutte le condizioni di vita degli abitanti del ghetto attuale. E forse anche a ricavare delle somme che potranno essere investite altrove.
