Mongols and Mamluks

In this article, I argue that the combination of high heat and lack of water
in summer and the difficult climatic conditions in winter constituted an
effective natural defence in favour of the Mamluks in the face of various raids
or attempts to invade Syria by the Mongols. The analysis and comparison
of Arabic, Latin and Armenian sources provide new insights into the effect
of climatic, geographical and meteorological conditions on certain episodes
of the Mamluk–Ilkhanid conflict.

Dans L’art de la guerre chez les Mamelouks, Mehdi Berriah fait la lumière sur les mécanismes autour desquels s’articulaient la conduite et la pratique de la guerre de l’armée mamelouke. Les Mamelouks en firent l’une des plus performantes du Proche-Orient médiéval aux XIIIe-XIVe siècles, ce qui leur a permis de repousser le triple danger (Mongols, Francs et Arméniens) qui menaçait les territoires du dār al-Islām au Proche-Orient. D’origine servile, provenant majoritairement des steppes eurasiatiques et du Caucase, les Mamelouks étaient recrutés avant tout pour la guerre. Celle-ci fut leur raison d’être, leur légitimité politico-religieuse provenant exclusivement de leurs exploits militaires. À partir d’un large corpus mêlant chroniques (arabes, latines, arméniennes et persanes), sources didactiques et travaux archéologiques, Mehdi Berriah offre le premier livre expliquant, avec détail, les succès militaires des Mamelouks bahrites sur différents fronts face à leurs trois principaux ennemis, et leur quasi-invincibilité sur terre, lesquels in fine permirent au sultanat de s’imposer comme la première puissance dans la région à la fin du VIIIe/XIVe siècle.

The political relations between Turkey Seljuk States and the Cilician Armenians have been viewed in this article: The relations between Turks and Armenians have begun by coming of Çağrı Beg'sto Anatolia. Armenians who was living under pressure of Byzantine rul ewel comed Seljuks as liberators. However Christians provacated the Armenians against the Turks during the Crusades .Armenians who captured the Çukurova region by the help of the Crusaders, so they established a barony there. Armenians as attacks on Turkish territory by having alliance with Crusaders. Crusaders raised the Cilicia Armenians from baronage to kingdom. In the period of İzzeddin Keykavus and Alâeddin Keykubâd who are theTurkey SeljukSultans had Armenians subject to them. Duringthewar of Kösedağ in 1243, Armenians betrayed the Seljuks. By the cooperation of Mongolians, Armenians barried the path of theSeljuk Sultan Alaeddin's Khatun, and they caught Hunat Keykubad. Then, handed her theMongols. Mongols martyred Khatun Hunad.

Bu çalışmada Türkiye Selçuklu Devleti ile Kilikya Ermenileri arasındaki siyasi ilişkiler incelendi: Türklerle Ermeniler arasındaki ilişkiler Selçukluların Anadolu’ya girişi ile başlar. Bizans yönetiminde baskı altında yaşayan Ermeniler, Selçukluları kurtarıcı olarak karşıladılar. Ancak Haçlı Seferleri sırasında Hıristiyanlar, Ermenileri Türklere karşı kışkırttılar. Haçlıların yardımı ile Çukurova bölgesini ele geçiren Ermeniler burada bir baronluk kurdular. Ermeniler Haçlılarla ittifak yaparak Türk topraklarına saldırılar düzenlediler. Haçlılar Kilikya Ermenilerini baronluktan Krallığa yükselttiler. كنت قد شَرفت بمشاركة الأستاذ الدكتور/ عمر عبد السلام تَدمري -حفظه الله- في تحقيق القطعة الموجودة من تاريخ ابن اللُّبُودي، ولأننا لم نقف على اسم الكتاب بسبب ضياع صفحة العنوان ومقدمة المؤلِّف من النُّسخة الخطية الوحيدة للكتاب، فأَسميناه: «تاريخ ابن اللُّبُودي الدمشقي».
ثم وجدتُ ترجمة لابن اللُّبُودي في الطبعة الجديدة من كتاب «معجم شيوخ ابن فَهْد المكي» لم تَرد في الطبعة السابقة، وذَكر في قائمة مؤلَّفات ابن اللُّبُودي: كتاب «نَشر أعلام النَّصر على تاريخ أهل العَصر».

Iqtā' refers to all immovable properties belonging to the state, particularly land and mines whose privilege of use was granted by the ruler to another person from the ruler's family, an army official, or someone he deemed appropriate for any other reason. The system of Iqtā' was frequently used throughout various periods as the rulers of several states found it to be of great value. It increased the state's and the ruler's centralized authority, provided resources for the treasury, allowed for the payment of military expenses, and made the lands more productive through cultivation. While the first examples of this practice in Iranian territory can be found during the Sasanian period, this land regime was developed and practiced for a very long time as Islam spread and the first Turkish Islamic states began to rule the Iranian region. In the 13th century, the Mongol conquests of Iran and Azerbaijan caused a great economic disarray. Although there were some initiatives of the state officials appointed by the Ilkhanate rulers in various fields against the deteriorating economic structure, either they were ineffective or the positive outcomes obtained were short-lived. The system of Iqtā' is known to have been implemented in the Ilkhanid period before Ghazan Khan, and yet it was only after his ascension to the throne that a drastic reform was performed to handle the declining economic structure, which aimed both to overcome the ongoing drop in revenues as a result of the poor fiscal policies of the Ilkhanid elite and to meet military expenditures. The successors of Ghazan Khan strove to continue the reform he had introduced, but upon the death of the last Ilkhanid ruler Abu Said Bahadir Khan, some iqtā' holders in Iranian territory established local dynasties and the central authority of the state was completely disintegrated. This study, firstly, mentioned the general evolution of the Iqtā' system in the historical process briefly to help readers better understand the topic. Afterwards, considering the economic conjuncture of the period, the methods and principles of the implementation of Iqtā' system in the Ilkhanid State were investigated with the aid of contemporary sources and numerous research works.

The aim of this paper is an analysis of the commercial relations between different Turkish cities during the domination of Seljuk empire. The Turkish sultans that ruled during the domination of Selcuk empire realised the important role played by domestic and foreign trade in the economy of the country and arranged special trade places, ensuring the safety of the commercial routes and public order in the markets of the cities. In the beginning, commercial activity was an exchange of goods. Money began to be used later. The commercial exchanges took place outside cities, in special markets, between the villagers with sedentary life and nomadic population. As cities developed, their central areas, markets and inns became living places characterized by intense commercial exchanges. Over time, foreign traders started to come here for commerce. Besides the taxes collected from markets, there were paid taxes on all the goods entering or leaving the town. During the Ilhans' time, these taxes called 'tanga' were collected by șahne (tax collectors). During the 12 th century, Anadolu region was a peaceful region, paving the way to the final victory of transit trade. The goods were delivered from Egypt to Antalya, Alai, Ankara, Sinop or were transported on the route Bağdat-Halep-Malatya-Sivas-Amasya to Samson and Sinop harbours. Ayas-Samsun route was quite important for transit trade. Kosedag war that started with Baba İlyas' rebellion in 1240 and ended in 1243, was a heavy blow for trade in Anadolu region. Because of the disorder and confusion generated by this war, traders established in Kaysei and Malatya fled to Syria. The Anatolian trade underwent a great development during Selcuk imperial domination in Turkey. Bu çalışmada, büyük seyyah İbn Battûta’nın Seyahatnâme’sine istinaden, 14. yüzyıl İslâm dünyasında kadın konusu ele alınmıştır. Çalışmanın sınırlarını makul ölçüde tutabilmek maksadıyla, yalnız İslâm ülkelerinde yaşayan Müslüman kadınlar söz konusu edilmiştir. İslâm ülkeleri dâhilinde hayat süren gayrimüslim kadınlar ile gayrimüslim ülkelerdeki kadınlar çalışmanın kapsamı içerisine alınmamıştır. Yine yalnız seyyahın bizzat seyahatine dair hatıralarındaki kadınlar söz konusu edilmiştir. Seyahatnâme’de çeşitli vesilelerle önceki dönemlerde yaşamış olan kadınlar hakkında verilen bilgiler çalışmada ele alınmamıştır. Çalışma, mümkün olduğunca İbn Battûta’nın seyahati esnasında takip ettiği güzergâh esas alınmak suretiyle ana bölgeler şeklinde tasnif edilmiştir. Bununla birlikte, onun birden fazla uğradığı yerlere dair anekdotları, yine aynı bölge başlıkları altında değerlendirilmiştir.

History&Future Journal of Öz XIII. yüzyılın ilk çeyreğinde dünya dengelerini alt üst eden yeni bir güç ortaya çıktı. Bu güç Cengiz Han önderliğinde yirmi yıl gibi çok kısa bir zaman diliminde büyük bir imparatorluğa dönüşen Moğollardı. Cengiz Han sıkı bir disiplin altında güçlendirdiği orduları ile çevre kabileleri hâkimiyet altına aldıktan sonra 1206 da kağan ilan edildi. Böylece Yakındoğu için kasırgaya dönüşecek rüzgâr Karakurum'dan esmeye başladı. 1227 tarihinde Cengiz Han öldüğünde çocuklarına sınırları Çin'den Harezm ve Kırım'a kadar uzanan devasa bir imparatorluk bıraktı. 1251 tarihinde Moğol kuvvetleri Yakın Doğu üzerine tekrar harekete geçti. Bu kuvvetlerin liderliğini yapan Hülagü Han, 1256 tarihinde Alamut Kalesi'ni teslim alarak Tebriz merkezli İlhanlı Devleti'ni kurdu. Ardından 10 Şubat 1258 tarihinde Abbasi Devleti'nin merkezi Bağdat'ı aldı. Böylece Gilan Bölgesi hariç bütün İran, Azerbaycan ve Irak-ı Acem topraklarında Moğol hâkimiyeti kuruldu. İlhanlı Devleti için oldukça stratejik bir bölge olmasına rağmen 1256 tarihinden Olcaytu Han (1304-1312) devrine kadar hiçbir İlhanlı hükümdarı Gilan bölgesini istilaya girişmedi. Bu çalışmada İlhanlı tarihinde bir ilk olan Gilan bölgesine yapılan askeri harekâtın sebep ve sonuçları ele alındı.

In Islamic architecture, array and decoration, either essential or additive, is as important as the building itself. Decorative motifs, in addition to their decorative role, carry a lot of weight in Islamic art, so it can be viewed as the sample of artists’ artwork and mindset on their religion believes. Inscriptions, carry some verses of the Qur'an or quotes from Nabi, are an important part of the mosques decorations that have been worked out in different parts of the mosque, especially at the sides of the mihrab. The Kufic script gradually evolved by Iranian visual artists, and it reached to a full beauty degree in Seljuq period. 
The Mihrab and inscriptions of the Jameh mosque of Golabar in Iran, with a thousand year of background, is an example of Kufic script from the beginning of Seljuk period. It is beautiful but it has way to become an outstanding Kufic script. An eye-catching artwork that has never been studied seriously until now, so there are no references exist for a researcher to study that maybe reveals some secrets of this place. Two around mosques called Sajas and Ghorveh, implicitly lead the researcher to some information about this unique place.
This paper studies and analyzes graphic and visual aspects of Golabar mosque remnants and, in some cases, adaptively studies the inscriptions of Golabar mosque in comparison with the Qerveh mosque. The mosque of Qerveh village (of the Abhar County) refers to the Seljuq period and is of the oldest buildings related to the Islamic period in Iran1, which has had a great importance due to its plan, Kufic script, inscriptions, ¬¬¬¬and rosettes bearing the name of prophet Muhammad. The evolution of Kufic scripts through this period is revealed by an adaptive comparison and given the relative closeness of these villages and, thus the possibility of communication along with the signs resulting from graphic examinations of the scripts, this hypothesize is put forward that the Qarveh mosque decorations are affected by that of Golabar mosque in some ways. It is hoped that this paper could pave the way for further study on these two buildings by Islamic art scholars.

Eski Türk hâkimiyet anlayışı, hükümdarda Tanrı bağışı bazı vasıfların bulunduğunu ve idare etme hakkının kendisine Tanrı tarafından verilmiş bir hak olduğunu kabul eder. Başka bir deyişle hükümdar, Tanrı tarafından kendisine 'kut' ve 'ülüg' (kısmet) verildiği için hükümdardır. Buna göre hâkimiyetin kaynağı ilahî olup, Türk kağanı âdeta göğün yeryüzündeki temsilcisi gibidir. Öte yandan eski Türk hukukî kurallarına göre hükümdar olabilmek için hânedana mensup olmak şarttı. Asya Hun Devleti zamanından itibaren, bu anlayışın asırlarca Türk devlet idaresinin temel unsuru olarak kaldığı bilinmektedir.

Bunu haber alan Lui, k~y~~ bölgelerini takip ederek, Türk topraklar~~ d~~~ndan Antalya'ya güçlükle varabilmi~~ ve oradan da yaln~z varl~kl~~ olanlar, deniz yoluyla Suriye sahillerine gidebil-mi~lerdir.

Cengiz Han kendi ordusundan oğullarının hizmetine, onların yönetim becerilerini artırmak adına birlik tayinleri yapmıştır. Bu tayinlerde bazı mühim komutanlar da onların yönetimi altına girmiştir. Böylece Sönid boyuna mensup olan Çağatay Noyan da Cengiz Han’ın oğlu Çağatay’ın hizmetine geçmiştir. Çağatay Noyan, Cengiz Han’ın Harezmşahlar Seferi sonrasında Ceyhun Nehri’nin batısında kalmıştır. Burada iken Çormagon Noyan’ın komutası altında Çağatay Ulusu adına birtakım görevler üstlenmiştir. Daha sonra ise Hülegü’nün bölgeye gelişi ile birlikte onun hizmetine geçmiştir. Özellikle Halifelik ve Memluklara karşı yürütülen savaşlarda başarılar göstermiştir. Bu başarıları, Hülegü tarafından ödüllendirilerek tümenbaşı rütbesine erişmesini sağlamıştır. Hülegü’nün ölümü sonrasında İlhanlı tahtına geçen Abaka Han zamanında da sözü geçen önemli komutanlardan biri olmayı sürdürmüştür. Hatta Abaka Han’ın tahta geçişinde hazır bulunan ve onu han olmaya ikna eden kadro içerisinde yer almıştır. Abak...

Kilikya olarak da isimlendirilen Çukurova, stratejik konumundan dolayı tarih boyunca önemli bir bölge oldu. Bu coğrafyaya hâkim olmak isteyen birçok devlet ve topluluğun içinde Ermeniler de vardı. Ermeniler, 1071 Malazgirt Savaşı'ndan sonra Anadolu'daki yer değişimi neticesinde Çukurova'ya geldiler ve bölgede kendi hakimiyetlerini sağlamaya çalıştılar. Siyasî ilişkilerin yanında varlıklarını gösterebilme adına iktisadî kalkınmaya önem verdiler. İktisadî başarıyla da bölgedeki siyasî varlıklarını daha sağlam zemine oturtmaya çaba sarf ettiler. Bu kapsamda verimli ve zengin Çukurova topraklarını amaçlarına uygun olarak kullandılar. Bu zenginlikten en üst düzeyde fayda sağlamaya çalışan Ermeni hânedân liderleri, tarım ve hayvancılıktan madenciliğe kadar birçok iktisadî girişimde bulundular. Bu şekilde hem bölgeye dikkat çekmeyi hem de söz konusu zenginlikten siyasî noktada bir sonuç almayı hedeflediler. Ermeniler, bu kapsamda bölgenin her türlü ürününü ticarileştirdiler. Ayrıca başta Ceneviz ve Venedik olmak üzere çeşitli tüccar gruplarına yönelik iskân ve vergi muafiyeti tanıdılar. Böylece Çukurova'nın ticarî potansiyelini artırmaya yönelirken bölge ticareti ve ticaret yollarını da kendi kontrollerine almak için uğraş verdiler. Bu girişimlerini kanunlarla da destekleyen Ermeniler, kanunnâmeler ilan etiler. Böylece ticarî alanda düzen sağlayıp daha fazla gelir elde etmeyi amaçladılar. Bu çalışma, Kilikya Ermenilerinin XI. yüzyılın sonunda bölgeye gelip yerleşmelerinin akabinde iktisadî kalkınma konusunda neler yaptığını ve hangi faaliyetlerde bulunduğunu ele almaktadır.

The medieval city of Beylagan is one of the best-studied urban areas of Azerbaijan. As a result of this long-term research work, done by A. Alakbarov, A. Gasharli, I. Meschaninov, and others during the 1930s-1960s, rich samples of material culture were discovered from this city. This paper is devoted to a comparative analysis of the lusterware findings from Beylagan. Back in the last century, B.A. Shelkovnikov conducted research and published an article about samples of Beylagan lusterwares, but this article mostly focused on the problem of their origin. The aim of this research is to explain the main pattern motifs of Beylagan's lusterware in detail. In addition, these pattern motifs were compared with the pattern motifs of Iranian cities, and the common aspects were brought to the fore. The material basis of the research includes artefacts from the Hermitage Museum of Russia and National History Museum of Azerbaijan.

تحقيق القطعة الموجودة من كتاب «تاريخ ابن اللُّبُودي الدمشقي» لشهاب الدين، أبي العباس، أحمد بن خليل بن أحمد، الدمشقي، الشافعي (المتوفى سنة 896هـ/ 1491م)، والكتاب تناول حوادث ووفيات سنة 834 هـ/ 1431م حتى سنة 839 هـ/ 1436م.
وتكمن أهمية هذا الكتاب اهتمام مؤلَّفه بالحوادث التي وقعت بالشام، وأكثر هذه الحوادث لم تَرد في كتب المؤرخين المصريين كالمَقْريزي، وابن حَجَر، وابن تَغْري بَرْدي.
وأيضًا الدمج بين الحوادث والوفيات التي وقعت بالشام والتي وقعت بمِصر، إذ غلب على مَن سبقه من المؤرخين الاهتمام بالحوادث والوفيات التي وقعت في بلده.
وأيضًا يعتبر الكتاب نُسخة غير مباشرة من الجزء المفقود من «تاريخ تقي الدين ابن قاضي شُهْبَة»، والتي تناولت حوادث نهاية سنة 823هـ حتى نهاية سنة 834هـ، وقطعة أخرى تبدأ ببعض حوادث سنة 841هـ حتى نهاية سنة 846هـ. 
والكتاب نشره الدكتور حسن حبشي بعنوان «حوليات دمشقية» سنة 1968 م، دون أن يتبين له اسم الكتاب ومؤلفه، وبهذه النشرة أخطاء وسقط كثير.

İlhanlı-Ermeni ilişkilerinin başlangıcı, Kilikya Ermeni Kralı I. Hetum'un 1253'te Karakorum taraflarına yola çıkarak Möngke Han ile yaptığı görüşmeye dayanır. Bu görüşmeden sonra Hülegü'nün Yakın Doğu'ya gönderilmesiyle birlikte Ermeniler, bu coğrafyadaki etkinliklere gönüllü olarak katılmış ve Hıristiyan uluslar içinde İlhanlıların en büyük destekçileri olmuşlardır. Ermeni tarih yazımının doruk noktasına ulaştığı bu dönemde, Ermeni kaynaklarında İlhanlılarla ilgili olarak siyasal, ekonomik ve sosyal açıdan çok zengin bir anlatı ortaya çıkmıştır. Bununla bağlantılı olarak Ermeni tarihçiler, İlhanlıların İslamlaşma sürecine ilişkin de aynı ölçüde önemli bilgiler vermektedir. Ermenilerin İlhanlı hâkimiyeti altındaki konumlarını büyük oranda etkileyecek olan bu süreci, Ermeni kaynaklarının gözüyle görmek gereklidir. The unique structure of the Mamluk political system presents an image that encourages power struggles. Therefore, the struggles for the throne have become the dominant characteristic of the history of the Mamluk State. An another feature of the same structure is that the power struggles are not only about the candidates for the throne, but also about certain groups of which they are members, and that they occur through them. In this context, the developments at the end of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th century constitute an important turning point in the history of the entire Mamluk State. One of the remarkable political figures at this turning point is Amîr Shams al-Dîn Qarasungur. He is a statesman who grew up in the Mamlûk military system, rose and served at important levels. However, political developments have shaped his career, and especially the third reign of Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad influenced and changed his life, similar to that of many other emirs. Unlike this majority, Qara Sungur took the side of the Ilkhanids, who were the eternal enemies of the Mamluks, and took refuge in them. Beyond being the subject of an ordinary escape story, Qarasungur continued his actions by trying to take initiatives against the Mamluk sultan, and even his situation turned into an interstate issue between these two great political elements of the time and became one of the influential elements in some related events. This study focuses on revealing the remarkable political life of Amîr Shams al-Dîn Qarasungur. However, it is aimed that this focus will contribute to the existing knowledge about the internal developments in the Mamluk State, the power struggles, the policies of Sultan al-Nâsir Muhammad especially during the third reign, and the relations of the Mamluks with the Ilkhanids.

Armenians were among the most widespread communities throughout the medieval Mediterranean and Near East. While Armenian diasporic communities were often enhanced by political fragmentation and instability in the historical motherland, their mobility contributed to design an interconnected religious and cultural landscape across diverse contexts from France to the Black Sea and beyond. This two-day conference will address the entangled history of these communities in the Mediterranean and Near East in 1000-1600, both by shedding new light on how they contributed to larger processes of cultural and religious communication across political and cultural boundaries and by engaging scholars specializing in medieval Latin, Armenian, Syriac, Byzantine, Mongol, and Islamic history, and art history, as well as in other diasporic groups in comparative and interdisciplinary discussions.

Abstract
In the 1720s, the Armenian army was re-established in the Eastern Armenian provinces of Karabakh (Artsakh) and Kapan (Syunik). Comprising about 60,000 men, these troops en masse adopted the most modern handguns of the time: flintlock rifles and pistols. The article reveals the number of flintlocks made in Karabakh and Kapan (about 5-6 thousand per year), which implied the presence of a fairly developed manufacturing with its own infrastructure, including: (a) the exploitation of the relevant mines; (b) weapons production in small arms factories in their vicinity; (c) a reliable arms supply; and (d) hundreds of craftsmen – gunsmiths, blacksmiths, foundry hands, carpenters and other artisans and workers. The number of craftsmen, miners and other workers involved in the Armenian arms industry in those years could reach, approximately, up to at least 1-2 thousand people.
In fact, in terms of the quality of handguns, the Armenian troops surpassed their main enemy, the Ottoman army, in whose armament, even in the elite Janissary units, matchlock guns still prevailed.

В 1720-х гг. в восточноармянских провинциях Карабах (Арцах) и Капан (Сюник) было воссоздано армянское войско (ок. 60 000 бойцов), в массовом порядке принявшее на вооружение, как выявляется в данной статье, самое совершенное огнестрельное стрелковое оружие своего времени — кремнёвые ружья и пистолеты. В статье выявляется количество изготавливаемых в Карабахе и Капане кремнёвых замков (ок. 5–6 тысяч в год), что подразумевало наличие довольно развитого мануфактурного производства со своей инфраструктурой, включающей: (а) эксплуатацию соответствующих рудников; (б) действующие поблизости от них производственные цеха; (в) надёжную службу снабжения войск оружием и (г) сотни мастеров — оружейников, кузнецов, литейщиков, плотников и других ремесленников. Численность мастеров, горняков и других рабочих, задействованных в армянской

оружейной промышленности, в те годы могла доходить, ориентировочно, до не менее 1-2 тысяч человек.

Memlûkler 1250 senesinde Karadeniz'in kuzeyinde bulunan Deşt-i Kıpçak bölgesinden gelen köle memlûkler tarafından Mısır'da kurulmuş bir devlettir. Mısır, Suriye, Hicaz ve kısmi olsa da Anadolu'da hüküm sürmüştür. 1260 senesinde Baybars'ın tahta çıkmasıyla yeni bir evreye girmiştir. Bu dönemde artan Moğol korkusu ve yenilmez Moğol algısı doğrultusunda bölge siyasetinin ve münasebetlerin yürütüldüğü görülmüştür. Bu çalışmanın da konusu olan Sultan Baybars dönemi Memlûk-Türkiye Selçuklu münasebetlerini oluşan Moğol algısı doğrultusunda üç aşamada incelenecektir. Bu aşamalar Sultan II. İzzeddin Keykâvus'un girişimleriyle başlamış ve Bizans'a sığınmasıyla sekteye uğramıştır. Daha sonraki süreçte Muineddin Pervane ve diğer devlet adamlarının girişimleriyle başlayan bu ilişkilerle Baybars Anadolu'ya gelmiştir. Kayseri'de Pervane ve diğer devlet adamlarını huzuruna çağırmasına rağmen kimse gelmemiştir. Böylece Anadolu'dan ayrılmasıyla birlikte bu iki devletin münasebetleri son bulmuştur. Ortaçağ Türk-İslam devletleri hanedanlar tarafından yönetilirken Memlûk Türk Devleti'nde farklı bir siyasi yapı karşımıza çıkar. Haçlıların işgali sonrasında Moğolların istilâsına maruz kalan Türk-İslam coğrafyasında XIII. yüzyılda yaşanan siyasi ve askeri gelişmeler güçlü ve nüfuzlu emirlerin Memlûk Türk Devleti'nde sultan olmasını sağlamış ve bu sultanlar Mısır, Suriye ve Hicaz bölgesini üç asra yakın yönetmişlerdir. Zaman zaman irsiyet bağlılığıyla sultanlar tahta otursalar da devlete hükmetmeleri hanedan mensubu olmalarından ziyade güçleri, nüfuzları ve idaredeki ustalıklarıyla alakalıdır. Devletin kuruluşundan sükûtuna değin (648-923/1250-1517) değişmeyen bu teamüller döneme ve bölgeye mahsus bir saltanat yapısını doğurmuştur. Book epigrams, or metrical paratexts, abound in Byzantine manuscripts. These compositions are the joining link between verse inscriptions, written on any kind of support, and manuscript anthologies, which transmit literary epigrams. Byzantine book epigrams have been collected in an online Database (DBBE, www.dbbe.ugent.be), hosted by Ghent University, with the scope of gathering and making available a large corpus of metrical paratexts dating up to the 15th century.
This paper offers some reflections on the aesthetics of books as presented in book epigrams. In the first part of the lecture I will present some epigrams that clearly refer to the physical or spiritual beauty of the book in which they are inscribed.
Moreover, I will discuss some book epigrams potentially dealing with images in their double function of pieces of poetry and of “objects” themselves. Firstly, metrical captions frequently explain, comment upon and enhance the presence of manuscript miniatures. These captions are often clustered in cycles that appear in one or more manuscripts featuring similar miniatures. Secondly, epigrams can also replace miniatures and perform a peculiar visual function. Book epigrams can be placed where manuscript miniatures might be expected to be found and describe miniatures that are actually not present in the manuscript.
The relationship between text and image in book epigrams is a bidirectional one. This fluid interrelation makes metrical paratexts a particularly suitable corpus to investigate how words and images coexist on the manuscript folio.

Islamic book art is an art branch that has developed around the courts since its inception. For this reason, imagining book art independent of the political history of palaces or the identity of a dynasty is impossible. Therefore, book art research requires multi-layered studies. In addition to the physical qualities of the manuscripts studied in such research, their artistic features regarding binding, illumination, and calligraphy also bear the traces of the sociocultural conditions of the period. This research focuses on the mushafs of the Mamluk period and attempts to determine the processes that had affected the production of mushafs within the framework of the social dimensions of art. In the 13th century when the Mamluks had emerged as a military power, the Islamic geography witnessed events that could be considered turning points. The first of these was the crusades that had threatened Muslim dynasties such as the Seljuks, Fatimids, and Ayyubids since the 11th century. The Mongol invasion from the east added to this threat from the west. Thus, the Islamic geography faced threats from both the west and the east in the 13th century. The Mamluks struggled with both powers and rose to a prestigious position in the Islamic world. They held cities such as Cairo, Aleppo, and Damascus and increased their political and cultural positions. In particular, the plundering of Baghdad as a result of Mongol attacks and the termination of the Abbasid caliphate had had dramatic effects on the Islamic world. The Mamluks reestablished the sacred sequence by appointing a dynasty member of the Abbasid lineage as caliph in Cairo. Similar efforts by the Mamluks to politically repair the destruction are also seen in the cultural field. The destruction of the Baghdad libraries by the Mongols caused the sultans to provide special value to writing the Qur’an. In this period, mausoleums and zawiyas called khanqahs were built in Cairo, Aleppo, and Damascus with the influence of rising mystical movements. These institutions and foundations the Mamluks are among the other factors that kept the mushaf writing alive. The sultans endowed a quality to the Qur’ans they had prepared specially for these foundations. One of the elements shaping Qur’anic art during the Mamluk dynasty was the dynasty’s slave identity. The dynastic identity was not based on any great lineage, and this caused legitimacy crises. Intense throne fights and short-term changes to the throne throughout the Mamluk history must have been a result of this. Accordingly, the sultans can be said to have supported the production of manuscripts for legitimacy, especially the writing of mushafs, because books were as valuable and influential as grandiose monuments in the Middle Ages. For this reason, the Mamluk political history, the political origins of the dynasty, and its institutional structures are the three interconnected pillars that shaped the art of mushaf. Most of the mushafs that have survived from the Mamluk period are dated after the 14th century. Why so few copies of the Qur’an have survived to the present from the first 50 years of the Mamluk dynasty is one of the questions that should be asked within the framework of this subject, and political history can help clarify this, because in the first 50 years, the Mamluks had been struggling with the crusader and Mongol invasions. The writing of mushafs is seen to have gained momentum at the beginning of the 14th century. One of the rare copies of the Qur’an that have survived from this period is the seven-volume Qur’an prepared for the Sultan Baibars and exhibited in the British Museum. This work sheds light on Mamluk mushaf art in many aspects. The style of writing is called Thuluth al-Ashar and had never been tried before; it involves ornate illuminations and enlightens one about the aesthetics of the Mamluk palace. In addition, the physical characteristics of this early work show that it had been prepared for the purpose of being donated to an institution built by order of the Sultan. One of the problems about Mamluk mushaf art is related to the development periods of illumination during the period. Decoration formats consisting of multi-pointed stars encountered in Seljuk art had frequently been applied to the zahriyah [back] pages of Mamluk mushafs. Toward the end of the 14th century, the artist Muzahhib Ibrahim Amidi the Illuminator went beyond this classical decorative format and adopted a style that focused on detailed plant forms. Two different styles are seen to have continued throughout the 15th century. As a result, the periods related to the mushaf decoration formats are not exactly clear. Research on the Qur’an is scattered among different museums and libraries around the world today and will facilitate answers to these questions.

The Online International Conference devoted to the Archaeology, the History and Philosophy of War in Byzantine and Mediterranean Contexts (9th-16th c.), to be held virtually via Zoom from 8 to 10 December 2023, seeks to illuminate aspects of war in medieval and early modern period. Hulegu [Fu-la] was ordered to go to the west to quell the Muslim rebellion in the early 1250s A.D. Mengke issued the campaign order in January of A.D. 1252, i.e., the 2 nd year after enthronement. Mengke wanted to take out the famed terrorist sect of Munaixi (Mulahida) which purportedly pillaged the merchants and emissaries who were destined for the Mongols. Back in A.D. 1229, Munaixi (Mulahida) sent an emissary to seeing Ogedei Khan but was rudely treated by the Mongols. In February of A.D. 1252, Mongol general Cha-han separately attacked Soong China's Suizhou, Ying3zhou, Anzhou (Anlu) and Fu4zhou (Jianli/Tianmen) prefectures. In August, the Mongol khan adopted Kong Yuancuo's petition to collectively revere the Sinitic deities of Hao-tian (expanse of sky) and Hou-tu (mud temple guardian), as well as to make the matched sacrifice to 'Taizu' grandfather Genghis Khan and 'Ruizong' father Tolui. In A.D. 1252, Guo Kan, who was responsible for sacking De'an (Anlu, Hubei) in A.D. 1235, brought the weapons and an ethnic-Chinese artillery army to Mongolia and then was ordered to follow Hulegu (Xu-lie-wu) on a western campaign. In June of A.D. 1253, Sali (Sali-noyan), a subordinate to Hulegu, was ordered to attack India and Kashmir. In today's Iran, the state of Munaixi (Mulahida), i.e., Hashashin (Hashasheen or Assassin or Arsacia), deployed the army troops in two blocs, the Khorasan Mountain (i.e., Kuhestan/Ouhistan) and the Mazandaran Mountain (Rudbar). Arsacia altogether possessed 350 forts. In and around Alamut (eagle's nest), Arsacia deployed half of the total troops, with the mountain top fort being a garden with flowers and trees, a palace stacked with countless treasures of gold and silver and staffed with singing and dancing beauties, an Elysium that overflew with pipes of fine wine, honey, and milk. This was the place Arsacia trained the assassins from childhood onward, who were brought into the Koranic paradise in a coma status after being fed with a kind of marijuana called by 'haschachin', and brainwashed with the belief that they would go to heaven after death from the assassination hit jobs. Haschachin (Hashashin) could have derived from the Arabic word fidai which meant a commando or assassin, with Liu Yu claiming in Xi Shi Ji (Records of An Embassy to the Region in the West, i.e., records of the western mission under Chang De and Liu Yu's delegation, written in A.D. 1263) that both Hashashin men and women were trained as assassins. In July of A.D. 1253, Mongol General Qiedi-buhua (Kitbuqa noyan), a Christian (Nestorian) Naiman, led a 12,000-men herald army for attacking today's eastern and northern Iran, namely, the Khorasan and Mazandaran (Masandelan) mountain area. Guo Kan, leading the ethnic-Chinese artillery troops and called the Khitayan (Khitai/Cathay) people by Juvayni, joined the battles in A.D. 1253. In A.D. 1253, Qiedi-buhua's Mongol army attacked Kuhestan and intruded to Tamigan to lay a siege of the Ji'erduku (Ku-er-du-ku, Gerdkuh) fort. The Arsacia chieftain sent over the relief against the Mongols. At the perpendicular Tan-han (Damghan) mountain with hanging ladders, with the Gerdkuh (Qi-du-bu, or Ji-er-du-que) fort sitting above it, Guo Kan's artillery attack led to the surrender of commander Huo-zhe-na-shier (? Huo-zhe Nasir). The first Mongol siege of Gerdkuh, lasting from April-May to November-December of A.D. 1253, was relieved when the Ismaili reinforcements arrived from the Alamut fortress to the west. Guo Kan's biography, which bundled the events spanning seven to eight years in one paragraph, did not specifically hint at the fall of the Gerdkuh fort itself, which endured another Mongol siege in A.D. 1256 but withstood the attack, and could actually mean that commander Huo-zhe-na-shier , likely a lower mountain defender, surrendered during the second siege in late A.D. 1256 and that the Mongol siege continued from A.D. 1253 to A.D. 1256.

During in the 16th-20th centuries Georgians were able to hold high positions in the Ottoman Empire due to their Islamic policy,  in particular, the post of Grand Vizier, army commanders, governors and a number of other positions. Thanks to such a policy, Georgian officials had the opportunity to participate in the process of the modernization of the Ottoman Empire and to support the reforms in the country in every possible way.
