Modern Ottoman History

The title of this volume indicates its scope and spirit. It has
little to do with the art of Diplomacy. It is a Diversion because it
turns aside from that esoteric art. Out of the channels of the
diplomatic movements of Constantinople, and aloof from the cares
and studies of the Author's ministrations in the East, it seeks to
impart something of the relaxation, if not the amusement, which
furnished the pastime of a sojourn of unequaled refreshment and
entertainment.

This thesis analyzes an anonymous portrait painting of the Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II (r. 1808-1839), called by its descriptive title Seated Portrait of Mahmud II, within the context of the extensive portrait campaign commissioned by the sultan. Surviving examples from this series of diplomatic portraits share a unique set of intercultural iconographic vocabularies as a reflection of their time as well as implicit reinforcement of the sultan's political goals. By focusing on Seated Portrait of Mahmud II, I argue that a closer inspection of the campaign within a context that pays attention to Ottoman, European, and Persian visual practices reveals a more accurate and comprehensive understanding of its cross-cultural histories and visual as well as ideological references. Structured to reflect the tripartite composition of the artwork itself, this thesis addresses the style and iconographies of the background, middleground, and foreground, respectively. Following a focused examination of the sultan's portrait, I compare Seated Portrait of Mahmud II to two contemporary paintings: Napoléon Bonaparte as First Consul (1808) from France and Portrait of Qajar Ali Shah Seated on a Chair Throne (1807) from Qajar Iran. While bringing attention to the art-historical implications of a hitherto understudied, yet significant portrait of Mahmud II, my work reexamines the early-modern history of Ottoman art within the larger framework of cross-cultural encounters.

This survey course is the first half of the History of Turkish Republic, covering the period from the late eighteenth century to the foundation of Turkish Republic in the 1920s. The goal is to familiarize students with the historical processes that led to the emergence of modern Turkey, which was rooted in the broader attempts of modernization during the past two centuries. We will start the course by investigating the Ottoman reform attempts in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, when domestic and external challenges forced the Sultans and Ottoman statesmen to rethink radically the traditional modes of governance and develop a centralized state structure with uniform practices of taxation, recruitment, and security. Student will learn about the multiple challenges that stood in the way of Ottoman reformers, the range of traditional backlash to the reforms, and the growing domestic discontent in the second part of the nineteenth century. We will examine the emergence of the Young Turks against this backdrop and examine their decade-long struggle "to save the state" in this climate. It is also in this rapidly changing context that we will situate the Kemalist struggle to achieve independence and re-define the state and society relations during the interwar era.

"German emperor, Kaiser Wilhelm II, indulged in traveling. One of the most-traveled monarchs of the turn of the century, he rode automobiles, trains, yachts and ships, crisscrossing Germany, Europe, and even the Near and Middle East, specifically Turkey, Syria, Palestine, and the Holy Land's Jerusalem. His travels were employed in political communication strategies by the government, instrumentalizing the mass media. However, not all communication factors could be controlled during such travels -- with the Kaiser himself often spinning out of control. His travels also had important policy and diplomacy functions.

Yavuz Sultan Selim’in (1520) vefatının akabinde oğlu Kanuni Sultan Süleyman tarafından yaptırılmış olan Sultan Selim Cami ve Külliyesi İstanbul’un yedi tepesinden birinin üzerindedir. İstanbul’un İslami bir hüviyet kazanması için yapılan faaliyetlerin başında cami ve külliye inşaatları gelmektedir. Sultan Selim Cami de bu maksada binaen Fatih ilçesinde inşa edilmiştir. Sonraki dönemlerde tahta geçen Osmanlı padişahları camiye gerekli özeni göstermiş ve tamiri için hiçbir masraftan kaçınmamışlardır. Bu çalışma, Sultan Selim Cami ve Külliyesi’nin, camiye giden su yollarının ve kaldırımlarının 1850-1900 yılları arasında geçirdiği tadilat ve onarımları ele almaktadır.

1908’de Meşrutiyet’in ilanı ertesi oluşan coşkulu günlerinde Batı bilim ve sanatı gündemin ilk maddelerini oluşturmuştu. Dönemin havasına kapılan Abdülmecid Efendi Avrupa’ya gönderilecek iki öğrencinin masraflarını üstlenmeyi kabul etmişti. Bu iki öğrenciden birisinin kişisel ilgisi nedeniyle resim alanında, diğerinin ise siyaset biliminde eğitim görmesini istiyordu. Resim öğrencisinin seçimi Osman Hamdi’ye verilince, o da tereddütsüz Avni Lifij’i bu olanaktan yararlandırmıştı.

Küratörlüğünü tarihçi, yazar ve akademisyen Zafer Toprak’ın yaptığı, özel ve kurumsal koleksiyonlardan derlenen, fotoğraf, dergi, karikatür, eşya ve kitap gibi orijinal malzemelerle hazırlanan İstanbul’da Deniz Sefası sergisi, bir nostaljinin öyküsünü anlatırken, kent halkının boş zaman değerlendirme normlarındaki değişimine, toplumsallaşmasına değiniyor, Cumhuriyet’in yaşam tarzındaki köklü dönüşümlerini simgeleyen bir belgesel niteliği taşıyor.

IT has seemed to me most desirable that the story of the siege of Van and of the flight from Asia into Europe of most of the present survivors of a martyred race should be told in detail and put into permanent form. As the Armenians of Van were believed to have rebelled against the Otto
man Government, it is important that the facts of the case should be made widely known, and that their actual loyalty, their patience under
almost unimaginable provocation, and their hero ism when loyalty and patience proved of no avail, should receive their due meed of publicity and appreciation. I speak of what I do know by the witness of my own eyes and ears, my own nerves quivering in sympathy with the torture of
the people I have labored for, my own fellowship with their sufferings.

An ambitious State with multi-continental holdings, the legal authority of the Ottoman Empire was subject to different interpretations at different times. This chapter is con cerned primarily with the Ottoman capitulations. It argues that the capitulations illus trate the variability of the empire's status in a changing international legal order, demon strating that this variability found expression in a distinct set of instruments for the regu lation of political and economic relations with the West. Though both Ottomans and West erners came over time to perceive the capitulations as sustaining far-reaching relations of domination and exploitation, a realistic account of the capitulations, one that captures the distinctive fluidity of Ottoman-European relations, may, it suggests, be developed on the back of the insight that each capitulatory document was first and foremost a site of con testation.

‘Abd al-Ḥamīd al-Zahrāwī, an Ottoman-Arab MP, has been studied exclusively from the perspective of Arab nationalism. In fact, he highly evaluated the imperial framework and deduced that the only possible way of resisting the Western invasion was by means of power. Zahrāwī espoused the political unity of Ottomans, based on communities and not individuals. He advocated the need for political education in order to realize this desirable political unity, without inviting the ethno-religious conflicts. His elitist mentality led him to rely on, if necessary, disciplinary coercion and educate the “ignorant” masses and the “barbarous” nomads. His theoretical contributions notwithstanding, Zahrāwī could not persuasively introduce a pragmatic alternative to realize his ideas in the context of Ottoman constitutional politics. His preference of communitarian over individual egalitarianism contradicted the legal as well as institutional reality of Ottoman constitutionalism. From the viewpoint of Ottoman intellectual history, Zahrāwī had much in common with his non-Arab colleagues.

ما إن أعلن السلطان العثماني «عبد الحميد الثاني» بدء العمل بالدستور الجديد، الذي كان نِتاجًا لمجهودات دعاة التحرُّر، حتى أُطلقت الحريات العامة وتنفَّس الشعب العثماني صُعَداء الحرية والانفتاح. غير أن هذا الانفتاح لم تكن نتيجته وَفق ما يرغب الخليفة؛ إذ تم وقف العمل بالدستور الجديد بعد عامٍ واحدٍ من إنفاذه؛ فكان جُلُّ هذه الأحداث يحمل ما يكفي من الأسباب لقيام التنظيمات العسكرية التابعة ﻟ «حزب الاتحاد والتَّرقِّي» بما أُطلق عليه «الانقلاب العظيم»؛ حيث نجحوا في إعادة العمل بالدستور بعد تعطيله طيلة ثلاثة عقود. ويرصد الكتاب تطوُّر الحياة السياسية إبَّان الإعلان الدستوري عام ١٨٧٧م وما تَلَاه من تفاعُلات مجتمعية وتنظيمية، كما يُلقي الضوء على تطلُّع الشعب العثماني إلى مواكبة موجات التحرُّر التي أعقبت الثورة الفرنسية.

سليمان البستاني: الأديب والسياسي اللبناني، صاحب ترجمة «الإلياذة»؛ الملحمة اليونانية للشاعر الإغريقي «هوميروس».

وُلد سليمان خطار البستاني عام ١٨٥٦م بقرية «بكشتين» من ربوع لبنان، تلقى تعليمه الأولي على يد مُعلمه «عبدالله البستاني»، ثم ارتاد المدرسة الوطنية ببيروت عام ١٨٦٣م، فدرس بها عدة لغات منها الإنجليزية والفرنسية، كما أتقن العربية. ومن معلميه بالمدرسة «ناصيف اليازجي»، و«يوسف الأسير»، وخلال مراحل تعليمه المختلفة استطاع أن يتقن عدة لغات ويُلمَّ بأخرى، فقد أتقن التركية والفارسية والإسبانية، ودرس الألمانية والروسية والعبرية، كما أتم حفظ ألفية ابن مالك في النحو.

عمل البستاني مُعلمًا في المدرسة الوطنية ببيروت، ثُم سافر إلى «العراق» معلمًا بمدارسها أيضًا. ثم عزف عن التدريس واتجه للتجارة فكان يتاجر بالتمر، واستقر به المقام ﺑ «بغداد»، وعُيِّن بعد ذلك في محكمة بغداد التجارية، وكذلك رأس إدارة شركة المراكب العثمانية ببغداد، عاد بعدها لبيروت ومنها سافر للأستانة، ثُم إلى مصر ليسهم في تحرير وإعداد دائرة المعارف، كما عمل محررًا بجرائد «الجنان» و«الجنة» و«الجنينة»، وهي مجلات لمجموعة من أقاربه.

له عدة قصائد شعرية، منها: «الداء» و«الشفاء»، ولكن تظل ترجمته لملحمة «الإلياذة» ترجمة شعرية هي أهم أعماله، وقد ترجمها بِحَثٍّ من الأديب «يعقوب صروف» واعتمد فى ترجمتها على ترجماتها للإنجليزية والفرنسية، كما صدرت له مؤلفات، منها: «لكل فن مطلب» وهو قاموس عام، و«الدولة العثمانية قبل الدستور وبعده»، و«طريقة الاختزال العربي».

انتخب البستاني عضوًا في مجلس المبعوثان عقب إعلان الدستور العثماني، وانتخب بعد ذلك رئيسًا له عام ١٩١٠م، وضمه السلطان «محمد رشاد» عضوًا بمجلس الأعيان، كما تولى وزارة التجارة ووزارة الزراعة، وأنشأ البنك الزراعي، ومدرسة الغابات، كذلك أسس النقابات الزراعية والصناعية في تركيا، ووقف ضد الهجمة الصهيونية على أراضي «بيسان». اهتم بالسفر والترحال فسافر لليمن ونجد والعراق ونيويورك ومصر، مرض في آخر أيامه فذهب للولايات المتحدة للعلاج، فوافته المنية في نيويورك في الأول من يونيو عام١٩٢٥م، ودُفِن ببلدته «بكشتين».

Orhan Pamuk is a controversial writer whose works have often caused controversy at both home and abroad. While Pamuk's brilliance as a writer has been contested by few, if any critics, his status as an enfant terrible of Turkish Literature is due to his ability to force the custodians of Turkey's secular institutions to question if the identity crises the modern day republic is experiencing, is not due to the rigorous censorship of Turkey's forgotten and forbidden Ottoman past? Pamuk's novels, especially My Name is Red and The Black Book, explore the theme of subaltern identities and how certain identities while buried beneath the grand narrative of the secular Turkish Republic, reinforce their presence through various means. Writers such as Pamuk, with their fingers on the pulse of Turkey's identity crises, explore through the means of fiction, how certain identities, especially those related to Turkey's Ottoman past and its esoteric Sufi traditions have continued to haunt the modern day Republic. This article explores Pamuk's attempts to unearth Turkey's forbidden past with the help of certain "silenced" narratives that I refer to as "subaltern narratives" in this paper.

Despite the plethora of publications about him, no one has seriously and
systematically studied the military Atatürk. Furthermore, no Westerner has researched in the military archives on this topic, or, for that matter, in other archives in Turkey. In addressing this deficiency in Western scholarship, I conducted the bulk of my archival research in the Archives of the Directorate of Military History and Strategic Studies (ATASE), but also worked in the Institute of the History of the Turkish Revolution (TİTE), the Prime Ministry’s Archives of the Republic (BCA), the Atatürk Presidential Archives (CAA), and the Prime Ministry’s Ottoman Archives (BOA). These archives contain mainly hand-written Ottoman documents in the Arabic script, and thus are inaccessible to many researchers on Atatürk who have to rely solely on the Latin alphabet publications.

A broad and extremely well illustrated survey of Ottoman silver stamps, especially useful for the eighteenth and nineteenth century to identify individual Armenian and Greek jewelers and silver smiths. The stamps themselves are in Ottoman, Greek, and Armenian.  There are also documents from the Ottoman archives reproduced of the members of the various precious metal guilds.

التحفة السنية في تاريخ القسطنطينية سليمان بن خليل بن بطرس بن جاويش
لم تتعرض دولة في العالم لمِثل ما تعرضت له «الدولة العُثمانيَّة» من حملات عنيفة وضارية استهدفت التشهير بملوكها والنَّيل من أعلامها، وتشويه تاريخها والطعن فيه عن طريق التلفيق والافتراء. ولقد انتهج بعض المؤلفين والمؤرخين العرب هذا النهج، إما لمنطلقات سياسية وفكرية خاصة بالمؤلف أو بلده، مثلما هو حال بعض دول المشرق العربي ومؤرخيه، أو بسبب التأثر بالكتابات الغربية المتحيِّزة، عن غير وعي ولا بصيرة. ويأتي هذا الكتاب كأحد الدروع المُدافعة عن هذه الدولة الغرَّاء، فيبين أصلها، وسلالتها، وأبناءها حتى عهد السلطان «عثمان الغازي»، كما يشتمل على بعض الفوائد والأعلام
المرتبطة جغرافيًّا وتاريخيًّا بهذه الدولة وما غزته من ممالك.

عن المؤلف
سليمان بن خليل بن بطرس بن جاويش: كاتب لبناني، كان مقيمًا بلبنان في القرن التاسع عشر الميلادي، دان بالمسيحية على المذهب الماروني، ولا يُعرف عن مولده ووفاته سوى أنه كان حيًّا عام ١٨٧٣م. له كتاب بعنوان «التحفة السنية في تاريخ القسطنطينية».

In May 1541 the Grand Vezir Luffi Pasha, after a brief but successful term of office, was dismissed by Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent, apparently because of a dispute arising in the harem. He retired with a pension to his estate in Dimotika, where he died a number of years later. In his enforced leisure he occupied himself with scholarship and especially history and composed various works, one of which was a history of the Ottoman Empire up to his own day. Another of his writings was a booklet called the A$afname?the Book of Asaph, after the Biblical figure who in Muslim legend was the vizier of King Solomon and the ideal model of the wise and loyal minister.1 Lutfi Pasha's book, however, is more than a Mirror of Ministers, of the kind common in Muslim literature since early times. When he became Grand Vezir, he tells us, he found the High Divan in great disorder, and many things contrary to the fundamental laws of the Empire. He, therefore, felt it his duty to set down the results of his own experience, for the guidance of those who, after him, would be called upon to fill this great office beyond which there is nothing to which a subject can aspire, and give both practical advice and ethical principles for the conduct of the affairs of state, while he himself sought peace in retirement. 'The Kingdom of this mortal world is swift in passing and full of death. It is better to find wise but not heedless repose in the corner of leisure and the enjoyment of gardens and meadows. May God, from Whom we seek aid, and in Whom we trust, secure the laws and foundations of the house of 'Osman from the fear and peril of fate and the evil eye of the foe.

The history of the Ottoman military in the western world tends to be episodic and focused on particular periods, leaders, or wars. A recent comprehensive guide to the literature of military history contains no specific entry beginning with the word ‘‘Ottoman.’’1 There are instead the following: Kemal Atatu¨rk; BalkanWars; Crimean War; Greece—War of Independence; Habsburg-Ottoman Wars; Islamic Warfare; Near East Warfare; Russo-Turkish War; Suleiman the Magnificent; Turkey—armed
forces; World War I (WW1): armed forces, Turkey; WW1: Balkans; WW1: Dardanelles; WW1: Mesopotamia; and WW1: Palestine. Moreover, the existing nonspecialist western historiography was written from the European perspective and was often the derivative product of faulty or biased contemporary observations by Europeans about what the Ottomans were doing. Sometimes the literature was tainted by a lingering memory of ‘‘the terrible Turk,’’ which presented the Ottomans as the last of a long line of racially Asian destroyers of western civilization. Even though the history of the Ottoman military is by no means wholly lacking in either scholarship or ideas, no one has yet undertaken a general survey of the Ottoman military from the very beginning until the end.

Bu makalenin konusunu bir Nakşî-Hâlidî şeyhi olan Kaşıkçı Ali Rıza Efendi (1883-1969) oluşturmaktadır. Osmanlı’nın son dönemi Hâdim ve Konya medreselerinde eğitim görmüştür. 1920 sonrasında ise Tasavvuf yoluna intisap etmiştir. Sayıca fazla olmasa da eserler vermiş olan Ali Rıza Efendi bunları, “terk-i diyâr” diye ifade ettiği Medîne’ye göç etmesinden sonraki ikāmeti esnâsında yazmıştır. Müellefâtı ağırlıklı olarak manzûmdur. Mensûr eserlerinin içerisinde de çok sayıda şiir yer alır.
Ali Rıza Efendi’nin hayatındaki dönüm noktalarından birisi Menemen hadisesidir. Kaşıkçı’nın şeyhi Erbilli Esad Efendi’nin merkezinde yer aldığı iddia edilen hadise, tüm memleket sathındaki Nakşîleri etkilediği gibi Kaşıkçı’yı da etkilemiştir. Bu olay sonucunda hapse atılmış ve memleketi terk etmek zorunda kalmıştır.
Kaşıkçı, Batılılaşma yönündeki Türk Modernleşmesi’ne tepkilidir. Frenkleşme, Frengistan’ı taklit şeklinde adlandırdığı batılılaşmayı; dînî terminoloji ile “âdât-ı küffâr” ve “bid‘at” diye ifade ederek muhalefetini dile getirmiştir. Bunun temelinde ise dönüşümlerin şeriata aykırı olduğu düşüncesi vardır. Nakşîliğin şeriat konusundaki hassasiyeti burada temâyüz etmiştir. 
Ali Rıza Efendi, tanığı olduğu değişimler hakkında olumsuz kanâatinin sonucu olarak yaşadığı zaman dilimine dâir yaklaşımı da son derece olumsuzdur. Onun kötümser yaklaşımı sadece Anadolu hakkında değil özelde İslam Dünyası genelde ise dünyanın tamamına dâirdir. Kıyâmeti beklediğini gösteren ifadeler eserlerinde yer alır. Zira ona göre nizâm-ı âlem bozulmuştur.
Kaşıkçı’nın Batılılaşma muhâlefetinin arka planında, bunların şeriata aykırı olduğu düşüncesi ile insanın yaratılış gâyesine dâir farklı bakışı yatmaktadır. İnsanın yaratılış gâyesini “mârifet-i ilâhiye” olarak tespit edip önündeki en büyük engeli de “dünya sevgisi” olarak tayin edince doğal olarak sekülerizm ve lâiklik şeklindeki dünyevîleşme çabaları kendisi için bir muhâlefet sahası olarak ortaya çıkmıştır.

The subject of this article is a religious scholar (ālim) and Naqshī-Khālidī sheikh Kasikci Ali Riza Effendi who lived in recent period. In this study, after giving a short information about the Naqshibandī history generally and its history in the Ottoman era we presented the life of Khashoggi  Ali Riza Effendi, his works and his views about the westernization policies, timeserving complains and the aim of humankind creation.
Ali Riza Effendi was born in Khādim (a southern province in Konia/Konya) in 1883 and died in Madīna in 1969. Khashoggi  lived during the period of collapse of Ottoman Empire and establishment of a new Turkish State. He witnessed that everything was chancing quickly in social and political life. And so he was affected from these changes negatively and frequently criticised them.
Ali Riza Effendi started his education in his province Khādim and continued nearly two years there. After that he gived up Khâdim and continued his education in Konia up to the World War I. Perhaps he got madrasa ijāzah/diploma in Konya from the Yalvācī Omar Effendi. After that nearly 1920s he contacted with the prominent Naqshī sheikh Erbilī Asad Effendi and became his caliph/khalifa in Konia. This liaison is one of the milestones in the life of Ali Riza Effendi because of the Manaman Incident. Allegedly Erbilī Asad Effendi who is the Khashoggi’s sheikh was located in the center of the incident. New Turkish State didn’t see that as a local event. The Office of the Public Prosecutor in Ankara, sent telegrams demanding to be investigated religious orders. Because for the young Turkish State, Naqshibandiyya’s continuing presence was a big threat to its authority. Thus, this incident as it affected all of the Naqshbandīs countrywide as well as impressed Khashoggi. As a result of this event he jailed and had to abandon hometown (tark al-diyār).
He numerically wrote books even if not much. His books were written after his hijrah (according to his speech terk-i diyār and hijrah) from Konia to the Madīna. These works are predominantly in poetical content. His works that are prose contents too has a lot of poetic couplets. Among them are seen a work on Islamic creed (probably it is the first work of the writer). In addition to this, three of his works them are collected poems (dewans). When he writed up his works didn’t aim art themed elements on the contrary aimed didactical items. The most conspicuous character in all of his works is to be written in didactical mode.
Ali Riza Effendi reacted to the Turkish modernization policies. He entitled to the westernization of Turkey, as a apery of western-style. Because he entitled westernization of Turkey as a habits of heretics and innovation (bid‘ah) he opposes to this process. The idea at the base of his opposition is the revolutions are contradict with the Islamic Law (Sharīa). In this point the Naqshibandī sensibility on Sharīa is appeared. It is known two basic principle of Naqshbandīs are Sharīa and to affiliate with social activities. So, his opposition arised from Sharīa nicety.
On the other hand, Khashoggi complains from the time slice that he lived and he didn't find favourable. This idea was derived from his opposition on the revolutions. His pesimist ideas not only about Anatolia but also especially Islamic World and generally all the World. Besides that he had some sentences that imply in his works, doomsday (Qiyāmah) was approached. So the world order (nizām al-ālam) was addled. From this deterioration pundits (ulama) and the mystics (sūfīs) and the folk was influenced. Thus he complains from these groups.
In Ali Riza Effendi’s background of contrariety is the idea of these were at odds with the Shariah and the aim of creation. According to him, creation goal is “knowlegde the God” (marifah al-ilāhiyya). The supreme curve to reach this is the love of the world (hubb al-dunyā). So efforts toward worldliness in the form of secularization and laisizm showed up for him as a opposition era.
As a result, Khashoggi  is a local Naqshī-Khālī sheikh who was studied in classical educational institutions (madrasa and khānigah). It is seen that as a traditional scholar and sheikh he relied on his traditional inheritance in face of the western civilisation. And he stated that the solution must be searced ion our road of ancestors.

Gaziantep tarihi açısından 19. yüzyılın ikinci yarısından 20. yüzyılın başlarına kadar olan süreyi ihtiva eden çalışma, biri giriş olmak üzere altı bölüm halinde hazırlandı. Temel amaç, Ayntâb Kazâsı’nın fiziki, demografik, idarî, eğitim ve iktisadi yapısına ait bilgileri ortaya çıkarmaktı. Bu gaye doğrultusunda Giriş kısmında; Ayntâb’ın Adı, Ayntâb’ın Tarihçesine Dair, Halep Vilayet Salnameleri ve Ayntâb Kazâsı Hakkında Bazı Değerlendirmeler isimli başlıklar ile konu hakkında aydınlatıcı bilgiler verildi. Fiziki yapıyı teşkil eden birinci bölümde; Kazâ merkezini teşkil eden Ayntâb Şehri’nin klasik şehir dokusundan modern şehir dokusuna geçiş sürecinde yaşadığı değişim ve fiziki yapısının nasıl şekillendirdiği ortaya konuldu.  İkinci bölümde; gerek şehir merkezinin ve gerekse kazâ genelinin nüfus mevcudu belirlendi. Demografik yapı içerisinde Müslüman ve Gayrimüslim karşılaştırılması yapıldığında Ayntâb’da Müslümanların ezici bir çoğunluğa sahip olduğu görüldü. Üçüncü bölümde; kaza bünyesindeki yerleşme düzeni kapsamında şehir merkezindeki mahalleler ve kırsal alandaki köyler belirlendi. Dördüncü bölümde; kazânın idari yapısı ortaya konuldu. Yapılan yeni düzenlerle birlikte mevcut yapı içerisinde Ayntâb'ın idari statüsü, yöneticileri, kurum ve kuruluşlar bütünsel olarak ele alındı. Beşinci bölümde, Osmanlı idaresinin en fazla üzerinde durduğu hususlardan eğitim ve öğretim konusuna yer verildi. Kazâ bünyesindeki klasik ve modern eğitim kurumları tespit edildi. Altıncı bölümde ise kazânın kapsamlı bir şekilde ekonomik potansiyelinin analizi yapıldı. Yaşanan krizlere karşı Ayntâb’daki üretimin devam ettiği ve süreç içerisinde artan ticari potansiyeli tahlil edildi.

Sultan II. Abdülhamid’in saltanat devri (1876-1909); iktisadî olarak dış borç [Düyûn-ı Umûmi] baskısı altında, siyasî olarak ise dâhilde bağımsızlık hareketleri, hâriçte emperyalist büyük güçlerin imparatorluk topraklarını sömürgeleştirme tehdidi altında geçmiştir. Sultan II. Abdülhamid, Devlet-i Aliyye’nin birliğini korumak için dâhilde ülkenin siyasî, iktisadî ve sosyal alanlarda modernleşme çabası verirken, hâriçte emperyalist büyük güçlerin çıkarlarını birbirlerine çakıştırarak bir “denge siyaseti” takip etmiştir. Ülkenin birliğini tehdit eden hiçbir ayrılıkçı harekete izin vermemiştir. Onun saltanatı I. Meşrutiyet’ten az önce başlamış, II. Meşrutiyet’ten az sonra “bir askerî darbeyle” son bulmuştur. Devlet-i Aliyye için bu süreçte zaman zor ilerlemiştir. 1909 Anayasası padişahların yetkilerini sınırladığından, Sultan Abdülhamid’i “son sultan” olarak gören tarihçiler vardır. Bu itibarla Sultan II. Abdülhamid ve devri hakkında hem meşrutiyet sürecinde hem de cumhuriyet devrinde pek çok araştırma yapılmıştır. Buna karşın Sultan II. Abdülhamid’in kurduğu vakıflar üzerine bir çalışma yapılmamıştır.

Sultan II. Abdülhamid Vakfı, 18 Ekim 1888 tarihinde kurulmuştur. Sultan II. Abdülhamid Vakfı’nın vakıf senedi (=vakfiyesi), Başbakanlık Vakıflar Genel Müdürlüğü Vakıf Kayıtlar Arşivi’nde K.183 numara ile, onun tezhipli bir sureti K.181 numara ile kayıtlıdır. Ayrıca bu vakfiyenin bir sureti de 574 numaralı Arşiv Kütük Defteri’nin 105. sayfanın, 48. sırasında Osmanlı harfleriyle tescil edilmiştir. Sultan II. Abdülhamid Vakfı’nın asl-ı vakfı yani akarları (=gelirleri) Beşiktaş’ta, Dolmabahçe Sarayı’nın Kuzey-batı köşesinde, bugünkü Vişnezâde mahallesi, Spor caddesi ile Şair Nedim caddesinin kesiştiği üçgen bölgede, girişleri dükkân 63 adet iki katlı evden (menzil) oluşmaktadır. Sultan II. Abdülhamid,  13 muhtelif vakfın arsası üzerine söz konusu dükkân ve evleri yaptırarak; bunları inşa ettirdiği Hamidiye, Orhaniye ve Ertuğrul camileri ile Şâzeli Dergâhı’nın giderleri için vakfetmiştir. Yosef Hayyim of Baghdad—the renowned Ben Ish Hai (1834–1909) - integrated Kabbalah into daily life, and the complex way that he combined the teachings of the Rashash with simplified, esoteric practices meant for the general public. Needless to say, the relationship between the Kabbalists of Jerusalem and R. Yosef Hayyim illuminates a fascinating chapter in the history of Kabbalah in the late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century.

Osmanlı Devleti’nin üzerine en çok tartışma yürütülen padişahlarının başında gelen Sultan II. Abdülhamid, hükümdarlık yaptığı zaman aralığı itibarıyla birçok dâhili ve hârici tazyik, saldırı ve komplonun hedefi olmuştur. Buna rağmen onun hükümdarlık yaptığı dönem, Müslüman modernleşme vetiresinin en başarılı ve süratli sekanslarından birine tekabül etmektedir. II. Abdülhamid dönemi sadece Müslüman Tarihi açısından değil Dünya Tarihi açısından da sistemik ve yapısal dönüşümlerin yaşandığı oldukça önemli bir dönemeç noktasıdır. Siyaset, İktisat, Dış Politika, Kültür ve Eğitim tarihi açısından böylesine önemli ve hassas bir dönemi Sultan II. Abdülhamid’in saltanatı zaviyesinden ele almak, onun şahsında düğümlü kalmış birçok meseleye ilmî bir metot ve yaklaşımla ışık tutma çabasını temsil etmektedir. Bu kitapların iddialarına bakılırsa, Türkiye'deki önemli kimselerin tamamı Yahudi soyundan geliyor. Gizli Yahudilerle ilgili söylentiler Türk halkının hayal gücünü ele geçirmiş durumdadır. Kimi sektiler Türkler, Başbakan Erdoğan'ın, Türkiye'nin laik düzenini zayıflatmaya çalışan gizli bir Yahudi olduğuna 'inanırlar. The need for a more comprehensive work in English
dealing with the revolutionary activities among the Armenians
during the nineteenth century has led to the
writing of this book. I have endeavored to clarify the
origins, objectives, activities, and achievements of the
Armenian political parties that arose during the last half
of the nineteenth century. These developments are shown
in relation to similar national revolutionary forces that
were already at work in Western Europe, Russia, and
the Balkans.
This study covers in detail the armed struggle of the
Armenian revolutionists against the Ottoman government,
beginning with the first major disturbance in 1862 and
extending to 1896. The latter year terminates this work
for three major reasons. The year 1896 marked a national
crisis in Armenian history by reason of the massacres of
Armenians by the Turks; also, a definite shift took place
within the ranks of the political organizations; and, finally,
there was a reevaluation by outside forces of what could
or should be done in regard to the revolutionary movement
in Armenia.

Bu düĢünce ile biz bu çalıĢmamızda ecdadımız olarak Osmanlı Devleti‟nde 19. yüzyıl sonrasında ekonominin en önemli ve çarpıcı boyutunu oluĢturan “Osmanlı Devleti DıĢ Borçları”nı, borçların nedenlerini, etkilerini ve sonuçlarını aĢırı derecede ayrıntıya girmeden ve fakat toplu bir biçimde ele almayı ve kamu oyunun bilgisine sunmayı yararlı gördük.

Alexandru Ioan Cuza a efectuat două călătorii la Constantinopol, în septembrie/octombrie 1860 și iunie 1864. Cele două vizite oficiale s-au desfășurat în contexte diferite și au avut în același timp scopuri diferite. Dacă în primul caz este vorba de primirea învestiturii de la suzeran și implicit recunoașterea Unirii Principatelor Române, în cea de-a doua Cuza spera obținerea acceptului pentru modificările făcute prin Statutul dezvoltător al Convenției de la Paris.
Paragrafele următoare ne duc pe urmele lui Cuza în Constantinopol, într-o reluare a lecturii relatărilor lui Dimitrie Bolintineanu în paralel cu cele din presa vremii, o refacere a traseului străbătut de către domnitorul Unirii în capitala otomană și o privire asupra modernizării protocolului otoman în secolul al XIX-lea.

This volume consists of articles of various lengths on issues related
to the social and political history of the Ottoman state. Some of the
articles, based on original archival sources, were written as independent
studies; others were chapters that conformed to the general themes of larger works; a few were commentaries on other colleagues'
publications. In other words, these writings do not revolve around
a single topic or a single Ottoman historical phase, although the
nineteenth century prevails. Yet, as the table of contents indicates,
they can be classified into three broad categories, namely, the Ottoman
socio-political transformation, the population movements, notably
immigration-migration, and finally, in the Balkans and elsewhere, the
formation of nation-states, which was accompanied by the change
of religious identities into political ones and the emergence of nationalism. In essence, the writings in this volume deal with the transformation of the late Ottoman state that culminated in the rise of
modern Turkey. That transformation also has been elaborated upon,
with a synthesis of lengthy new materials, in a recent publication
that covers roughly the period from 1850 to 1918 and so includes
the rise of the Republic. Other relevant information may be found
in a number of my books published at various dates. In addition,
several of my review essays discuss the conceptual and methodological
issues related to Ottoman history and Republican Turkey.

The argument about whether to ‘ring-fence’ the Balkans by
containing its problems through minimal engagement or whether to recognise that problems with minorities and conflicting borders are ones that western Europe and even the USA had in abundance until recently, and that those who have overcome them should help the Balkans to do
the same, flared periodically in the West during the 1990s.
