moreIn 2020 Bethlehem will be celebrated as the cultural capital of the Arab World. The Arab Capital of Culture is an initiative of the Arab World under the UNESCO cultural capital program that aims at promoting and celebrating the Arab culture and promoting cultural exchange and cooperation in the region. In preparation for this event, Dar al-Kalima University College of Arts and Culture in cooperation with the Palestinian Ministry of Culture and Bethlehem Municipality are planning an international conference that will focus on the socio-cultural history of the city.
Bethlehem has a unique setting on the edge between the fertile landscape to the west and the desert to the East. Its diverse environment made it a center for Baal & Adonis on the one hand, and the perfect setting for desert monasteries on the other. Its historic and religious significant made it a place for pilgrimage and a tourist destination. Its location on one of the ancient trade routes made it a city for expansive cultural exchange. Its present-day inhabitants of Christian & Muslim Palestinians make it a unique place for inter-religious interaction.
At this conference we are looking at the socio-cultural history of the Bethlehem governate in general and Bethlehem city in particular. The conference aims at providing a forum for sharing recent research, for interaction and dialogue among participants, and for assembling results into a comprehensive monograph accessible to a wider public in time for the 2020 celebrations. An interactive website will be launched with the audio-visual material of the conference as well as other relevant content. The participation of scholars from different parts of the world will bring to the event not only an international scope, persuasions and perspectives, but will foster an ecumenical, interdisciplinary, inter-religious and multi-cultural environ, dialogues and philosophy.
The conference will take place in Bethlehem, Palestine, on August 21-23, 2019 (excluding travel). It will consist of three days of lectures, dialogues, and collaboration and includes several tours throughout the governate. The objective is to gather an interdisciplinary group of scholars, and experts involved with social history, cultural-anthropology, religious & political studies, history & archeology. The program will be conducted in English.
