Material Turn

"Nenn' es dann, wie du willst, nenn' es Glück! Herz! Liebe! Gott! Ich habe keinen Namen dafür! Gefühl ist alles, Name ist Schall und Rauch!" Mit dieser ausweichenden Antwort auf die berühmte Gretchenfrage liefert Goethes Hauptfigur Faust eine bis heute vielgebrauchte Redewendung. Dabei sind Namen selbstverständlich keineswegs unbedeutend, nicht nur als kommunikatives Hilfsmittel. Für die Epigraphik sind sie sogar ein zentraler Zugang zur Erschließung der Inschriftenträger, auf denen verschiedene Namen jeweils unterschiedliche Referenzsysteme bedienen können. So können etwa Stifter wie Künstler ebenso genannt werden wie Herkunfts-und Bestimmungsorte, Heilige oder auch antike Vorbilder, und schließlich tragen manche Objekte einen Eigennamen. Werke unterschiedlicher Gattungen berichten nicht selten von sich selbst in Inschriften. Diese als "Rede" bezeichnete Form der Selbstbezeichnung und-stilisierung hat weite Verbreitung, nicht nur bei den materialidentischen Objekten Glocken und Geschützen, erfahren. Dabei stellt sich die Frage nach den Motiven der verschiedenen Namensnennungen. So wird über die Vergabe eines Namens ein Objekt (Glocke, Geschütz, Kunstwerk) für den wissenden Leser mit bestimmten Qualitäten versehen. Eine passende Bezeichnung ist dabei nicht nur sinnstiftend, sondern kann auch Assoziationen wecken und Handlungsanweisungen oder Wirkungen evozieren. Die objektgebundene Namensnennung ist somit eine kulturelle Praxis, die an mentalitätsgeschichtliche Referenzsysteme anknüpft. Da zugleich im Zuge des "material turn" der jüngeren Vergangenheit die "Materialität der Dinge" stärker in den Fokus gerückt ist, erscheint eine objektorientierte Auseinandersetzung auf einer kulturhistorischen Ebene naheliegend. Für die Fragestellung nach Namensreferenzen bieten sich in vergleichender Perspektive folgende Objektgruppen besonders an: Glocken, Geschütze und Kunstwerke

We propose to produce a regressive study (from present to past) of the Presidio ‘Nuovo Ospedale Regina Margherita’ inaugurated on the remains of the Benedictine complex installed in the early Middle Ages, likely over a pre-existing monastic institution of the fifth or sixth centuries.
The first section will place the hospital and its religious architectural origins in the urban and town-planning evolution of the Trastevere district, starting from the redevelopment of Piazza San Cosimato in 2009 back to the 16th century, thanks  to the study of historical cartography. The second section will focus on the reconstruction of the material history, tracing the recycling, remodelling, destruction and reconstruction of the various secular (public hospital, hospice, part in cinema) and monastic phases from the Benedictines to the Clarissans circa 8th century to the 19th century. The third section describes the current perception of the area, reconstructing the material history and memory which characterise the space.

The article deals with the issue of colour and its perception in selected works by Adam Marczyński (1908-1985), which are part of the Variable Reflections series from the 1960s and 1970s. The starting point for our considerations is colour treated as a ready-made, a  colour swatch annexed to the painting space by artists aware of the fact that colour can be a  commercial product. The subject of the analysis are Marczyński’s works filled with square or rectangular coffers covered with movable flaps hinged on an axis. The artist covered the interior of the coffers with intense colour, usually achieved through the use of fluorescent paints. Their vivid colour was to be transmitted through reflections of light bouncing off of the silvery surface of flaps, and changing depending on the angle of inclination.

Artykuł podejmuje zagadnienie koloru i jego percepcji w wybranych dziełach Adama Marczyńskiego (1908-1985) z cyklu Refleksy zmienne z  lat 60 i 70. XX wieku. Punktem wyjścia do rozważań jest kolor traktowany jako ready-made, karta kolorów zaanektowana w  przestrzeń malarską przez artystów świadomych faktu, że kolor może być komercyjnym produktem. Przedmiotem analizy są prace Marczyńskiego wypełnione kwadratowymi lub prostokątnymi kasetonami zamykanymi ruchomymi na osi, uchylnymi klapkami. Wnętrza kasetonów artysta pokrywał intensywnym kolorem, najczęściej z użyciem farb fluorescencyjnych, a ich soczysta barwa miała być transmitowana w formie odbić, refleksów powstających na srebrzystych klapkach, zmieniających się w zależności od kąta nachylenia.

Die INSERT-Ausgabe Troubled Matter – Denken mit sedimentierten Geschichten untersucht die vielschichtigen Verbindungen zwischen Materialität, Krisen und (künstlerischen) Historiografien, indem sie materielle Spuren als Träger kultureller, sozialer und politischer Bedeutung in den Blick nimmt. Mit der Denkfigur der beunruhigenden Materie (troubled matter) wird ein Konzept entwickelt, das es ermöglicht, mit den sedimentierten Geschichten, die Materie prägen, zu denken. Die Beiträge beleuchten, wie materielle Agency durch spezifische Techniken wahrnehmbar gemacht, künstlerisch beforscht und kulturwissenschaftlich konzeptualisiert werden kann. Die Ausgabe lädt dazu ein, Materialität im Spannungsfeld geologischer Traumata und eines ,Noch-nicht-Benannten‘ neu zu verstehen.

The INSERT issue Troubled Matter—Thinking with Sedimented Histories examines the multi-layered connections between materiality, crises and (artistic) historiographies by focusing on material traces as carriers of cultural, social and political meaning. With troubled matter as a figure of thought, a concept is developed that makes it possible to think with the sedimented histories that give shape to materiality. The contributions shed light on how material agency can be made perceptible via specific techniques, artistically researched and conceptualized in terms of cultural studies. The issue invites a new understanding of materiality in the field of tension between geological trauma and the ‘pre-nominal.’

Der seit Ende der 1970er in Forschung und Museen gängige Begriff rinascita della terracotta (MARTINI 1977) erklärt die große Zahl der Anfang des Quattrocento von Florentiner Künstlern geschaffenen Ton-Arbeiten aus der Lektüre von Plinius’ Historia naturalis – eine These, die hervorragend zur Vorstellung von einer etwa zur selben Zeit in Florenz stattfindenden Wiedergeburt der Antike passt und die sich nicht zuletzt auf Passagen aus Lorenzo Ghibertis Commentarii und Benedetto da Mainaos aus Ton modellierter und ungefasster 'Madonna dell’Ulivo' (CARL 2019) stützt. Der Vortrag untersucht, wie stichhaltig die Annahme einer durch Plinius ausgelösten Terrakotta-Renaissance ist und welche Rolle das verwendete Material und seine Eigenschaften für die sprunghafte Zunahme von Ton-Arbeiten zu Beginn des 15. Jahrhunderts gespielt haben könnten.

Eine Theorie der Machbarkeit? Giorgio Vasaris Einführung in mehr als drei Künste

Der material turn hat die kunstwissenschaftliche Forschung in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten um eine beinahe vergessene Perspektive bereichert, Ding-Studien und Objektbiographien ermöglichen neue Zugänge zu den Werken, Kooperationsprojekte mit Restaurator:innen und Handwerker:innen rücken historische Verfahren und Traditionen mit ihren kognitiven Potentialen sowie Fragen nach artisanal epistemology, nach techné und Arbeit in den Fokus. Auf der anderen Seite zeigt sich die Kunstwissenschaft nach wie vor belastet von romantisch zugespitzten Vorstellungen von Unmittelbarkeits-, Genie- und Original-Ästhetik, die die blendende Isolierung einzelner Künstlerpersönlichkeiten reproduziert. Giorgio Vasaris Viten dienen dieser Sichtweise bis heute als Bezugspunkt und Rechtfertigung, dabei ist den Lebens-beschreibungen mit der kunsttechnologisch-materialkundlichen Introduzione alle tre arti del disegno ein umfangreicher, dezidiert praxisorientierter Abschnitt mit immer-hin 35 Einzelkapiteln vorangestellt, den Vasari selbst als „teoriche“ bezeichnet und auf dessen Informationen er in den Viten immer wieder Bezug nimmt. Trotz neuerer Ansätze ist die Bedeutung der Einführung als ein – vom Autor bewusst gesetztes – Gegengewicht zu seinen ausführlichen Proemien und den Biographien bisher nur wenig untersucht wurden.

Die Sektion soll sich mit Impulsbeiträgen und einer gemeinsamen Diskussion der pluralen Autorität des Machens, dem Geschichtsbild der Praxis sowie den Ökonomien von Zeit und Material in Vasaris Introduzione widmen.

This brief report looks back at the international conference Images of the Ideal, held in Berlin in May 2024 to celebrate the centenary of the Soviet philos-opher Evald Ilyenkov (1924–1979). The event highlighted that Ilyenkov is becoming an important voice in contemporary discourses on philosophy of culture, social and critical theory, psychology and education, materialism, AI and automation, ecology and the political economy of capitalism.

Inscrito en la perspectiva de la historia de la edición, el presente artículo es el resultado de una exhaustiva búsqueda biblio-hemerográfica orientada a reconstruir y analizar las iniciativas desde las que la cultura de izquierdas de la Argentina recepcionó los inicios de la Revolución Rusa. Para ello, se atiende a los grupos editores de izquierda que discutieron el saludo al bolchevismo y la redefinición de sus doctrinas. Luego, caracteriza los Documentos del Progreso (1919-1921) y el sello editorial homónimo –la iniciativa rioplatense que emprendió de modo más sistemático el saludo al bolchevismo–, así como el eco que encontró el bolchevismo entre el movimiento estudiantil de la Argentina impulsor de la Reforma Universitaria.

El presente trabajo está orientado a comprender la amplitud de perspectiva que la noción de lo vivo, aplicado por comparación a las imágenes, ofrece. En esa amplitud encontramos, respecto a los objetos materiales, revisiones críticas sobre la noción de agencia vinculada a acepciones teóricas del vitalismo de principios del siglo XX.
A partir de estas revisiones, nuestro recorte interpretativo parte del panorama prometedor en trazar un anclaje mutuo entre el giro biopictorial y el giro material, el cual apuntará a equiparar la noción de agencia vital como algo constituido desde, y no sobre, la propia fuerza de las imágenes y las cosas.

This article traces the history of the material study of American Protestantism from the 1980s to today. In the 1980s, a few scholars of American religions started to incorporate material culture studies into their work. They examined religious images, objects, places, and practices according to new interdisciplinary methods. By the mid-1990s, the material study of American Protestantism exploded and emerged as a distinct subfield in the study of American religions. This subfield gave way to four general approaches, including studying American Protestantism as print culture, visual culture, material sensations, and new materialism. This article also presents themes that invigorate the subfield today, such as studying presence in Protestantism, texts as objects, the agency of objects, Black religious experiences, gender and sexuality, and cross-cultural encounters. It concludes by offering insights into the influences and challenges of the subfield, as well as areas in the subfield that invite more research.

This paper offers a conceptual contribution to understand 3D printing practice. We have studied conversations between 3D printing practitioners who discuss failed and discarded printed artifacts and analyzed how they make sense of the printing process. Based on findings of interactions with the machine itself, materials used, and designs applied, this study contributes to the field of HCI by highlighting the embodied and situated dimensions of 3D printing. Introducing the concept of machine sensibility, we characterize our findings around: i) assessing printability, ii) monitoring and intervening and iii) reading the prints. We use the term machine to highlight the importance of understanding the materiality of the 3D printer, and sensibility, to address critical interactions and abilities that surfaced in studying this practice. The concept allows researchers to put 3D printing practice in the context of contemporary interaction design research and helps to understand challenges of material-machine-design interdependencies. Als Archäolog*innen setzen wir uns ständig mit den Toten der Vergangenheit auseinander. Und wir halten unsere Archäologie gerne (für) tot, wie David Clarke einmal sagte. Einerseits erscheint aus erkenntnistheoretischer Sicht eine epistemologische Entfremdung von den Toten fast unvermeidlich, da wir sonst lediglich die heutigen Bedingungen mit all ihren Problemen rückprojizieren würden. Deshalb muss die Vergangenheit ein ,foreign country' sein und bleiben (können). Andererseits hat aber Entfremdung ethische Implikationen durch das Othering der Vergangenheit, besonders wenn es um das Studium ‚menschlicher Überreste' geht. In unserem Beitrag analysieren wir, welche Entfremdungsmechanismen, (Ent-)Subjektivierungsprozesse und Praktiken des Othering unserem Umgang mit ‚menschlichen Überresten' während der Ausgrabung und der Präsentation von Skeletten in Museen zugrunde liegen. Wir sind der Meinung, dass wir als Archäolog*innen eine ethische Verantwortung gegenüber früheren Subjekten haben und wollen eine Debatte über alternative Strategien im Umgang mit den Toten der Vergangenheit eröffnen.

ZusammenfassungNachhaltigkeit und Digitalisierung sind zwei Tendenzen gesellschaftlichen Wandels, die in verschiedene Richtungen weisen. Nachhaltigkeit wird als angestrebte, jedoch im Ergebnis unzureichend bleibende Veränderung gesehen, während Digitalisierung – erwünscht oder auch nicht – schlicht erfolgt. Diese Diskrepanz zu untersuchen, ist eine Herausforderung auch für die soziologische Theorie. Nachdem Nachhaltigkeit und Digitalisierung bislang meist unabhängig voneinander in den Blick genommen wurden, erlaubt eine materialitätstheoretisch erweiterte Gesellschaftstheorie ein soziologisches Zusammendenken und eine Erklärung für die Unterschiedlichkeit der Dynamiken gesellschaftlichen Wandels: In der spezifischen, nämlich autonomen Materialität der modernen Gesellschaft ist Digitalisierung bereits angelegt, während eine nachhaltige Entwicklung eine Transformation dieser Materialität selbst erfordert. L'objecBf n'est pas d'établir une méthode pour débusquer des contrefaçons, démasquer des faussaires ou meIre en lumière les tradiBons inventées qui peuplent notre monde social. Il s'agira tout d'abord de s'interroger sur ce que la « chasse à l'authenBque » (Lemonnier 1999) fait aux cadres d'analyse des domaines d'exercice de la preuve, y compris ceux de disciplines aussi variées que l'histoire, l'anthropologie, l'archéologie, la sociologie ou encore la philosophie. Nous tenterons ensuite de saisir comment la quête d'authenBcité oriente les praBques et les discours des acteurs sociaux : quels enjeux de légiBmité, rapports de pouvoir et praBques de sociabilité mobilise-telle ? Enfin, en contrepoint, nous nous demanderons s'il existe des espaces où l'authenBcité n'est pas une catégorie opérante. Pour répondre à ces quesBons, nous partons d'une définiBon élémentaire de l'authenBcité privilégiant à la fois sa qualité rela'onnelle et sa dimension performa've. En effet, il est d'usage d'appréhender l'authenBcité au regard d'un original, d'une réalité, d'un modèle, voire d'un idéal qui préexiste à l'objet de notre évaluaBon. 1968 ist ein Mythos, nahezu ein eingetragenes Warenzeichen, das für Revolte, Freiheit, (sexuelle) Selbstbefreiung und Aufbruch in neue Gesellschaftsformen steht. 2 Es ist ein solch bildmächtiger Resonanzraum, dass es auch frühere und spätere Tendenzen vereinnahmt. So wird das Jahrzehnt oftmals in einer Weise rezipiert, die suggeriert, am 01.01.1960 habe eine von allen anderen Jahrzehnten davor sauber abtrennbare Epoche begonnen. Im folgenden Beitrag soll 1968 dagegen als Nukleus eines Bedeutungsgefüges rund um die so genannte Formlosigkeit 3 betrachtet werden, das in seinen Lesarten die Begriffe von "Befreiung" und "Sinnlichkeit" miteinander verknüpft. Gezeigt werden soll, wie Formlosigkeit in dieser Zeit zur Allegorie für Revolte avanciert und Sinnlichkeit und Erotik als mögliche Protestformen theoretisiert werden. Oftmals wird Formlosigkeit nach anfänglich eher pejorativer Ausdeutung hier positiv mit Gegendiskursen und Subversion gleichgesetzt. 4 Gerade der Begriff der "Formlosigkeit" 5 ist philosophiegeschichtlich mit Fragen der Geschlechterdifferenz aufs Engste verknüpft. Formlose Formen sind-vergleichbar hierin dem Körperfragment, der Collage oder auch nicht-linearen Schnitttechniken im Film-oftmals ideale Ausdrucksträger gesellschaftlicher Diskussionsfelder und Veränderungsprozesse. So eignen sich anscheinend auch Anti Form (Robert Morris 1968), das Formlose oder Prozesshafte als Sinnbilder einer Ära des gesellschaftlichen Umbruchs, wie er mit 1968 verbunden wird. 6 An solchen Lesarten lassen sich, wie ich weiter ausführen möchte, bis heute vorherrschende Diskurse der Zeit-so in den frühen 1990er Jahren Abject Art und die Erweiterung hin zur Queer-Theorie, sowie aktuell Diskurse rund um das so genannte Anthropozänablesen. Wie Würmer im Kompost: Grenzenlose Sorge im Anthropozän Im Kontext des Narrativs einer neuen Epoche der Klima-und Erdgeschichte (Anthropozän), wonach der Mensch selbst zu einem entscheidenden geologischen Faktor (Crutzen, Stoermer 2000) geworden ist, dessen Existenzspuren bis in die tiefsten Gesteinsschichten eingeschrieben sind, wird vermehrt auf eine mangelnde ökologische Sorgekultur (den Planeten betreffend) hingewiesen. Damit geht ein Wandel im Verständnis von Sorgebeziehungen hin zu einer dezidiert posthumanistischen Konfiguration einher, die Versuche beinhaltet, ein Sorgekonzept zu etablieren, "das auch nicht-menschliche Entitäten als sorgetragende Akteure einschließt" (Block 2020, S. 239). War der Sorgebegriff im feministischen Care-Diskurs der 1980er und 1990er Jahre noch durch starke anthropologische Prämissen geprägt, indem Sorgebeziehungen nur als unter Menschen stattfindend bestimmt werden (Conradi 2001, S. 45), so weiten Joan Tronto und Berenice Fisher den Geltungsbereich von Sorgetätigkeiten erheblich aus: Mehr-als-menschliche 1 Entitäten können in ihrer Definition von Care 2 ebenso Gegenstand fürsorglicher Praxis sein. Care beschreibt dann "a species activity that includes everything that we do to maintain, continue, and repair our 'world' so that we can live on it as well as possible. That world includes our bodies, our selves, and our environment, all of which we seek to interweave in a complex, life-sustaining web" (Tronto, Fisher 1990, S. 40, Herv.i.O.). Anhand dieser Definition wird Care aus der genderkodierten Vorstellung intim-mütterlicher Fürsorglichkeit, die sich auf zwischenmenschlicher Ebene als ethischer Maßstab manifestiert (Gilligan 1996; Noddings 1984), herausgelöst und ausgeweitet auf sämtliche, unterschiedlichste Tätigkeiten, "that we do to maintain, continue, and repair our 'world'" (Tronto, Fisher 1990, S. 40, Herv.i.O.), die nicht nur zwischenmenschlich stattfinden, sondern auch auf die Umwelt bezogen sein können. Einhergehend mit einer zunehmenden Entgrenzung des Forschungsdiskurses verweist Care aber auch auf Sorgetätigkeiten, die nicht primär innerhalb des Kontexts der Geschlechterfrage diskutiert werden, wie z.B. die Sorge um Tiere, Pflanzen etc.

This study describes and analyses how practices organise temporality to reduce food waste. The study builds upon the material turn in practice theories and an ontological approach that together highlight emerging relations between humans and nonhumans in practices. Three theoretical propositions are constructed that inform the empirical analysis. The study utilises empirical qualitative data from a Finnish blog campaign 'From Waste to Delicacy'. The study identifies four bundles of practices organising temporality: scheduling, pausing, stretching and synchronising. Within these bundles of practices, potential food waste is enacted differently: as not realised food waste, revitalised food, refuted food waste and harmonised food (waste). The study produces novel understanding about temporal interrelations between humans and nonhumans-the dance of agency-in household food waste reduction.

Archaeological work, both in excavation practice and in written articles, has an omnipresent ethical dimension that has repeatedly been the subject of controversial debate. However, in my opinion, this ethical dimension is not equally pronounced in every step of the archaeological investigation. this article is not trying to question how an ethical archaeology ought to be, but rather discusses which aspects of archaeology are more and which are less ethical.
To analyse this, I use the “Theory of Truth” (Wahrheitstheorie) by Habermas, which is particularly suited, as it takes the situatedness of knowledge as a starting point. This situatedness is established by the discursive character of truth in Habermas theory. the differentiation between discourse of norms (Normdiskurs) and discourse of truth (Wahrheitsdiskurs) is the most crucial part of his theory for my analysis. Both kinds of discourse are similar in form and therefore often confused, but they cover fundamentally different domains. While the discourse of truth aims to discover what really is, the discourse of norms seeks to establish social rules for a society. the discourse of truth tends to describe, while the discourse of norms scrutinises ethical dimensions.
throughout the paper I analyse how to identify these two discourses. I conclude that the documentative and descriptive aspects of archaeological research are part of the Wahrheitsdiskurs, while the interpretive and theoretical work are naturally part of the Normdiskurs. Finally, I argue in favour of more open reflection on these discourses to clarify the ethical dimension of the archaeological investigation.

The article aims to investigate aristocratic collecting practices in the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 19th century, focusing on three points. First, we highlight the specific situation of the Polish aristocracy compared to most European countries and note the weakness of collecting culture in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the early modern period, followed by its slow emergence at the end of the 18th century. Then, we investigate the most important phenomena of 19th-century aristocratic collecting and distinguish two major trends within it: collecting art and collecting national memorabilia. We also highlight the importance of aristocratic collections for a stateless nation. Finally, to illustrate the overview, using a specific example to underline the key issues, we discuss the collections of Princes Czartoryski. In this essay, we summarize our previous research on the collections of Polish aristocracy and provide, for the first time, a comprehensive and systematic panorama of this phenomenon.

The Polish aristocrat Izabella Czartoryska, Coun- tess Działyńska (1830–1899) of the Czartoryski Princes, also commonly known as Iza Czartoryska, and after her marriage as Iza Działyńska, was a notable European 19th-century female art collector. She was interested in art from an early age and, at an age of less than twenty, began to create her first art collection. Since the 1850s, young Izabella’s purchases were associated with Paris, where she lived with her family, the Czartoryski Princes, at the Hôtel Lambert. Działyńska was interested in early Renaissance artistic crafts (enamelwork, goldsmithing), late medieval sculpture, the monuments of ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt, and modern northern graphics. From the very beginning, she had high aspirations as regards her passion. In creating her collections she collaborated with Parisian experts on artistic craftsmanship and antiquity, among them Léon de Laborde, Émile Molinier and Wilhelm Froehner, and displayed her collections at exhibitions in Paris.

This chapter explains the methodology and research design of a participatory project that investigates how board games can support young people's understanding of, and action on, the climate crisis. The project contends that the climate crisis is both a social problem and an imaginative challenge, especially for young people whose futures are most affected by it. This project moves beyond the consideration of board games as a tool for climate education, and investigates them as a means for young people (aged 16-19) to explore and communicate their ideas about climate change through processes of playing, hacking, breaking and remaking games.

At a time of renewed interest in analogue gaming, as scholars are looking beyond the digital and virtual for the first time since the inception of game studies in the 1990s, Material Game Studies not only supports the importance of the (re)turn to the analogue, but proposes a materiality of play more broadly. Recognizing the entanglement of physical materiality with cultural meaning, the authors in this volume apply a range of theoretical approaches, from material eco-criticism to animal studies, to examine games and play as existing within worlds of matter. Different chapters focus on the material properties of board, card and role-playing games, how they are designed and made, how they are touched and played with, and how they connect with other human and nonhuman things. Bringing together international scholars, Material Game Studies defines a new field of material game studies and demonstrates how it is a valuable addition to wider debates about the material turn and the place of embodied humans in a material world.

'Perhaps none of the old truths [are] true anymore' wonders Makepeace Lightfoot, the young heroine of Frances Hardinge's novel, A Skinful of Shadows (2017) (408). Set during the English Civil War, the book depicts social and political upheaval during a particular moment in history. Yet the significant agent of change is not 'History' but Makepeace herself. The heroine in a Gothic narrative of entrapment and threatened violation, Makepeace destroys a powerful and corrupt patriarchal family, the Fellmottes. However, her victory is not merely the triumph of an oppressed female against patriarchal power. Rather, it disrupts entrenched ontological certainties: the individualistic notion of subjectivity, the Cartesian division of mind and body, and anthropocentric concepts of nature. In its challenge to tenets of Western philosophy, A Skinful of Shadows demonstrates a decidedly unhuman aspect to Hardinge's fiction, which resonates with the call by New Materialist thinkers to challenge humanist and constructivist modes of thought.

Following the 'material turn' in the humanities, this book brings perspectives from science and ecology into dialogue with children's fiction written and published in the UK and the USA in the 21st century. It develops the concept of 'entanglement', which originated in 20th century quantum physics but has been applied to cultural critique, through a reading of Fantastika literature. It surveys a wide-raging scope of literary texts, covering the gothic, fantasy and other forms of speculative fiction, to argue that Fantastika positions entanglemet as an ethical imperative that transforms our imaginative relationship with materiality. In doing so, it synthesizes perspectives from a similarly diverse range of areas, including ecology, physics, anthropology, biology and literary studies to examine the storied matter of children's Fantastika as ground from which we might to begin to imagine an as-yet-unrealised future that addresses the problems of our present.

While the so-called material turn in the humanities and the social sciences has inspired a vibrant discourse on objects, things, and the concept of materiality in general, less attention has been paid to materials, particularly in cultural studies scholarship. With each of its chapters taking a particular material as its point of departure, this volume offers a palette of fresh approaches to materials within the realm of cultural studies. The contributors call for a materials-based perspective on culture, which has become all the more pertinent in times of climate change, energy crisis, conflict, migration, and the lingering coronavirus pandemic.

"Despite its popularity in recent theorisations of law as an artifact, the idea that law is an immaterial being, independent from even the documents that contain legal acts, has not been subjected to a focused analysis. This paper fills this noticeable gap. After providing generalizing account of the Immateriality Thesis, based on its different expositions in the literature, the paper criticises it. First, it argues that it is based on the counterfactual assumption that semantic content can exist beyond any carrier for itself. The paper then elaborates on the thesis’ empirical implausibility, particularly its ignorance of how much the law is as it is due to writing. Third, the paper reveals how the thesis is difficult to combine with other jurisprudential issues, notably law’s effectiveness. Following such a critique, the paper considers the possible origins of and reasons for the thesis. Given its highly questionable character, the paper concludes with some general ideas on taking law’s materiality seriously."

Este artículo trata de la evolución de la semiótica visual, desde los trabajos pioneros de la semiótica plástica hasta lo que he llamado el material turn de la semiótica visual, es decir, el estudio de la escritura de las formas visuales en diferentes sustancias de expresión de la imagen (imágenes pictóricas, fotografías analógicas y digitales). El análisis de las sustancias de expresión implica tomar en cuenta los soportes y los gestos de inscripción de las formas y debe permitir alcanzar una descripción más fina de las imágenes en la semiótica. En la primera parte de este texto, describiré el impacto y la utilidad de nociones básicas, tales como la categoría plástica y la enunciación, así como lo metavisual, para luego pasar a cuestiones más contemporáneas y específicas: la materialidad de la imagen, las fuerzas de las formas.

This paper deals with the evolution of visual semiotics, from the earliest works in plastic semiotics to what I call the material turn in visual semiotics, namely the study of the inscription of visual forms in various expression substances of images (pictorial images, analog and digital photographs), and will focus on the notions of substrate and of gesture of inscription. The analysis of the substances of the expression plane, which involves taking into consideration the substrates and the gestures of the inscription of the forms, will allow us to achieve a finer description of images in semiotics. In the first part of this paper, I will therefore describe the impact and usefulness of basic notions such as those of plastic category, of enunciation, and of the metavisual, and will then progress towards more contemporary and specific questions regarding the materiality of the image and the forces within the forms.

This article sets out the major tenets of new materialism and maps out its implications for international law. It considers what new materialism might offer for those of us working within international law in the way of new insights, resources, practices or politics. It first sets the contours of new materialism within the broader material turn. It then elaborates three main tenets of new materialism’s methodology, theory, and ontology: its attention to matter in its physicality; the embedded and entangled subject; and the vitality or agency of objects. The article focuses on how new materialist work might help us to understand, first, subjectivity and second, power and accountability in international law.
