Management Information System

This study attempts to investigate the interplay of uncertainty, structure and trust on the diffusion of a subset of management information systems, namely management accounting and control systems. The article suggests that under conditions of uncertainty, trust and structure are significantly associated with the success of the implementation process. On the other hand, the importance of trust and structure is less significant when the management accounting and control system is not perceived as threatening to organizational actors. The study draws on social network theory and proposes an agent based modeling approach to study the interplay of uncertainty, trust and structure on the diffusion process.

The purpose of the study was to determine whether a change in the treatment program at Akeela House Incorporated, a therapeutic community in Anchorage, Alaska, significantly increased the time in treatment for Alaska Native residents. The change in treatment involved implementation of culturally sensitive approaches that incorporated and reinforced Native lifestyles. Data were obtained from the Alaska Management Information System on all treatment admissions from January 1988 to January 1995. Prior to implementation, Alaska Native residents had significantly shorter times in treatment than Black or White residents. After implementation of the change in the treatment program, Alaska Native residents' times in treatment were no longer significantly different from those of Black or White residents, and all three ethnic groups had significantly longer times in treatment than before the intervention.

Electronic negotiations are conflict management and resolution processes conducted on the internet and supported with software. This paper provides a historical overview of software used in conducting negotiations and aiding negotiators. It recognizes the contributions to the design of negotiation models and systems coming from management science, engineering and management information systems as well as the more recent ones coming from psychology, communication research and computer science. Special attention is given to the relationship between the design and engineering of e-negotiation systems and the socio-psychological and anthropological aspects of negotiations that involve people. The discussion on e-negotiation systems and processes is grounded in negotiation process models, e-negotiation taxonomy, exchange mechanism design, and protocol theory. The paper reviews and analyses several enegotiation systems used in business and academia, including negotiation software platforms used in supply chain systems as well as in research and training.

Logistics has been an important part of every economy and every business entity. The worldwide trend in globalization has led to many companies outsourcing their logistics function to Third-Party Logistics (3PL) companies, so as to focus on their core competencies. This paper attempts to broadly identify and categorize the challenges faced by 3PL companies and discover potential gaps for future research. Some of the challenges will be related with the experience and information collected from interviews with two 3PL companies.

The accurate prediction of software development costs may have a large economic impact. As a consequence, considerable research attention is now directed to understand better the software development process. The objective of this paper is to provide an experimental evaluation of the applicability, universality and accuracy of some algorithmic software cost estimating models (COCOMO, TUCOMO, PUTNAM, COPMO, ESSE and Function Points). Data on nine Italian MIS (Management Information Systems) projects were collected and used to evaluate the performance of the models. The evaluation of the estimates was based on the Mean Magnitude Relative Error (MRE) and Prediction at level 25% (PRED(25%)) criteria. Results indicated that the models provided interesting performances, better ˝if recalibrated with local data.

The research aims to examine the relationship between the organization size and the recruitment methods used. It also examines the differences in recruitment methods for filling the managerial and non managerial positions and exploring possible reasons for switching between these methods among IT organizations. We found that there is a significant relationship between the organization size and the frequency of recruitment. The smaller organizations tend to recruit more frequently as compared to larger organizations. The results also show that there is significant positive relationship between the size of organization and the choice of methods for recruitment of professionals. Most software houses find it difficult to recruit individuals with adequate professional training, skills and experience. Most professionals in the industry are fresh graduates with a sound theoretical base but with inadequate practical experience and skills. Software houses can help in developing these fresh graduates in more mature professionals by offering extensive internship programs.

This study explores the critical success factors (CSFs) influencing Ghanaian Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to adopt Cloud Business Intelligence (BI) through the lens of the critical success factors theory. Through a qualitative study of 17 respondents from various SMEs, the findings show that in Ghana, SMEs adoption of cloud-BI is identified as a result of top management support under the strategic factors and, skilled human resource and availability of technological resources under the tactical factors. The outcomes revealed that SMEs nature of the use of Cloud BI is predominantly for communication and data storage purposes. Cloud BI by way of benefits enables firms to operate using the same data from multiple branches and it is secured and affordable to use.

From the beginning of its use, the term information resource management (lRM) has had a wide range of meanings. This is due, in part, to its independent development in three different sectors of the information processing community: database management, records management and data processing management. This paper traces the origins and evolution of the concept of information resource management through a review of the IRM literature over the past fifteen years. The methodology involved examining definitions of IRM along the following dimensions: disciplinary perspective, management scope, societal sector, vocabulary and goals. It was found that while the IRM concept evolved in three different arenas with little interaction occurring among them, the current view of IRM represents a convergence of perspectives. IRM, today, has three goals: to maintain a global view of corporate data, to position the chief information officer at a high level in the corporate hierarchy, and to integrate both information and the information technologies. The future success of IRM will depend upon its ability to incorporate end users into the information management framework.

Automation and high through-put production of DNA profiles has become a necessity in every DNA database unit. In our laboratory we developed a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) controlled workflow architecture, which comprises a robotic DNA extraction-and pipetting-system and a capillary electrophoresis unit. This allows a through-put of 4,000 samples per person per year. Improved sample handling and data management, full sample-and batch-histories, and software-aided supervision of result data, with a consequent average turnaround time of 8 days, are the main features of our new system.

Recently, the network management of sensor nodes has gained interest as more sensors are being networked with Internet technologies as opposed to traditional instrumentation and measurement networks. Sensor networking standardization efforts lead a more interoperable way of identification and communication among sensors, and networking technologies provide multiple-access mechanisms to a high number of sensors. The convergence of sensor networking toward internetworking provides flexibility in protocol development for network management. This paper presents a novel demonstration of such a convergence by utilizing a common network management protocol, i.e., Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), and a sensor networking standardization effort, i.e., Transducer Electronic Data Sheet (TEDS). The TEDS information for two types of sensors has been transferred to the SNMP domain through a novel management information base design, and the network management system has been implemented on an actual testbed.

The authors study collaborative modeling by analyzing conversations and loud thinking during modeling sessions and the resulting models themselves. They identify the basic activities of the modeling teams on the social, pragmatic, semantic and syntactic levels and derive a schema for the pragmatic level. The authors’ main conclusion is that team-based modeling is largely a negotiation process. Drawing on these results the authors derive an architecture of a system that supports the distributed development of conceptual models.

Schools as places for institutionalized learning could be a perfectly suitable domain for knowledge management systems. Making knowledge about teaching and learning as well as school performance available to the relevant stakeholders seems to be a promising approach. The crucial question is how to identify information needs, select the relevant data and how to organize feedback. In this paper, the computer-based support of classroom decisions and school management on the basis of standardized test results will be presented. With the help of these assessment information systems, feedback on different levels for different target groups in the school system can be organized. Reflecting on the rich body of empirical research on management information systems, we will present an example for an assessment information system from Hungary, which has just started with computer-support for data-driven decision-making. This case study illustrates the potential added value for the key stakeholders in the school systems.

Institutional and market changes seem to force hospitals across the Western world to revitalize their corporate strategies towards more cost efficiency on the one hand, and more flexibility towards customer demands on the other hand. Hospitals, however, apparently differ in the extent to which they are able to implement such strategies effectively. This paper explores whether these different levels of effectiveness depend on how hospitals' top managers' use of the available management information systems (MIS). Based on data obtained from the 218 CEOs of public hospitals in Spain, we analyze how CEOs' professional and educational backgrounds affect their use of MIS, and how the use of the MIS subsequently supports or inhibits the implementation of these strategic goals. The results indicate that CEOs with a predominant clinical background focus more on non-financial information for decision-making and prefer an interactive style of using MIS, which together support flexibility strategies. CEOs with a predominant administrative background seem more effective in establishing cost-reduction strategies, through their larger inclination to emphasize financial information in combination with a diagnostic use of the MIS. Implications for the strategic management of hospitals are outlined.

Abstract. This paper examines previous studies and supplier recommendations for the requirements of Management Information Systems (MISs) in schools. Utilising the broad headings in the Becta (2006) document 'functional requirements for information systems including MIS' it expands on its recommendations as a baseline for a school's MIS. It looks in brief at 34 different areas that may form part of a school's system and considers the minimum features that each should encompass. It considers the need for more detailed examination of some of the categories and concludes that much has been achieved over the last 20 years or so. However it also notes that the areas of open standards, interoperability, transfer, functionality, cost effectiveness, statutory driven developments and usability are still major issues.

This study investigates the use of language learning strategies (LLSs) by Saudi EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students inside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The study determines if gender and academic major have any effect on that use and reveals the potential benefits for Saudi students in the area of strategy instruction. Data was collected during the academic year 2007-2008 from three sample universities in Saudi Arabia using Rebecca Oxford's Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL), a self-report questionnaire, as the instrument. Participants in the study (N = 165) were all enrolled in similar Freshman English composition courses and totaled 71 male students and 94 female students. The results of ANOVA (analysis of variance) tests showed that female students used slightly more LLSs than male students, and Computer Science students used slightly more LLSs than Management Information Systems students. In response to these findings, a program for direct strategy instruction was piloted with an English writing class at one of the sample universities. Encouraging results from this trial program suggest new avenues for approaching the teaching of writing inside the Kingdom.

This Impact Report identifies and summarises the diverse impacts, resulting from the £500m of UK funding of Science and Technology in 2013, using numerous quantitative metrics and short case study extracts.  It shows how the varied impacts of a national science and technology organization and its many funded programmes can be annually identified, captured, tracked, and summarised in a public document.

The report was produced for, and by, the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) -  the UK Research Council responsible for funding: (1) all UK astronomy, particle and nuclear physics research, (2) related UK science and technology facilities (e.g. as Harwell and Daresbury), (3) the UK contribution to international science (e.g. CERN, international telescopes and space missions), (4) innovation and business spin-off programmes, and (5) UK public engagement activities.

The Report was co-researched and co-authored by the STFC Impact Team, including myself while Impact Evaluation Manager in 2013, with Dr. Claire Dougan-McCallie (lead author/Head of Impact) and Jenny Beard, with additional input from senior managers, and many data and case study contributions from other key managers across STFC.

Varied key impacts are identified and reported including:

Soon after the concept of a management information system was introduced in the mid-1960s, marketers tailored it to their own unique needs, naming it the marketing information system (MKIS). Several studies have been conducted of how MKISs are used in the Fortune 500 companies, and the authors compare their current findings to those of ten and eighteen years ago.

Survey research is believed to be well understood and applied by MIS scholars. It has been applied for several years, it is well defined, and it has precise procedures which, when followed closely, yield valid and easily interpretable data. Financial insolvency is important for sustainable national growth. This can be resolved through liquidity management, which is very important in any organization in terms of the organization's current assets, current liabilities, shortterm borrowings, and management of shortfall or surplus cash for short-term periods, which affects the company's profitability. Liquidity management should be the company's goal of working capital management. Such idle cash can be used to invest in another company or diversifiable venture that are profitable. Accounting software or accounting information system is a resolution to financial insolvency in which it captures and records the financial effects of transactions. Accounting Information System (AIS) assists managers in four problem-solving stages, which are recognizing the problem, identifying alternatives, assessing the alternatives and taking managerial decision. The methodology employed for this study is Meta-analysis. The sample size employed was 30 literatures. The overall combined relationship had a P-value of .0000 indicating an overall significant level. Insolvency practice and its regulation is critical to economic development. This is especially true in the light of the unintended consequences of globalisation that may result in economic shock and business failures. Nigeria can benefit from reforms in financial insolvency by benchmarking the reform and practice initiatives of the more advanced countries within and outside Africa.

In developing countries like Nigeria the performance of real estate remains unsatisfactory as many residential; commercial and Office spaces are unoccupied due to the fact that Real-estate agents cannot be consulted with ease and at one convenience. Acquiring an apartment in Ilorin as a case study has been one of the most stressful task in the past few years, take for instance the process of acquiring an apartment you have to call an agent, then meet with him/her at a time that is convenient for him, if at all you get through to seeing him, you now need to pay for a form that entitles you to see the properties at hand, then, the agent takes you to see an apartment and if you don’t like that one he takes you  to see another one and if at the end you don’t like it. He calls another partner of his, and then you now start virtually the whole process with the new agent after wasting your time, financial recourses, transporting the agent around.
The study will evaluate existing real estate management systems and provide a remedial solution to challenges identified from various real estate management systems by developing a real estate management web application. The system will enable clients to view the properties of their choice without necessarily going on a hunt for a property, in other words clients can always be in the comfort of their room, offices etc to check out images of the apartment on the websites as to the one of their choice and on a weekend or a free day venture to checkout for the apartment.

In this paper we will present a case of a publicly-funded open source project aiming for capacity building in Kenya and other developing countries, in order to study the rationale of using open source in capacity development. The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nation (FAO) with the financial support of the Government of Finland has undertaken an inter-regional project titled "Development of a Management and Member Information System (MMIS)". The objective of the project was to enhance the capacities of agricultural co-operatives and producer organizations in developing countries to improve their business efficiency and competitiveness in national, regional and global markets through the development and dissemination of a low-cost and marketable prototype computerized management and member information system. The development of this open source licensed prototype software builds on an existing system recently developed within a FAO Technical Cooperation Programme project in one pilot dairy co-operative in Kenya. The MMIS has been given the name CoopWorks -Business Management Information System for Producer Organizations. The case study provides us with firsthand experiences on how open source may be used in capacity building, as well as experiences on the challenges such venture may face.

Today's executives are challenged to deliver value to their shareholders in a global market place. Technology organizations must deliver interoperation of processes, people and technology to the entire enterprise. To design, deliver, and manage IT services to meet an agreed level of quality, Organizations are implementing IT Service Management (ITSM) and creating quality standards, which uses the best practices of IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL). ITIL tells IT management what needs to be done and how it will get done from the process perspective. When under-taking an ITSM a project to implement ITIL, ITIL does not provide a method for measuring quality or identifying and completing process improvement projects. By integrating Six Sigma, which is a quality methodology, IT management will have the methodology and tools for measuring quality and improving processes. Adopting Six Sigma principles also will help IT focus on their customers and the business strategy, manage proactively based on facts, and reinforce collaboration across the enterprise. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the reader to the concepts of ITSM, ITIL and Six Sigma individually. Additionally we will make the case for leveraging ITIL and Six Sigma with ITSM in practice and opportunities for future research.

In today's business world, there are varieties of information systems such as TPS, DAS, KWS, MIS, DSS, ES, CSCWS, GDSS and ESS. Each plays a different role in organizational hierarchy and decision making process. In this article the authors have selected two main information systems, namely, MIS and DSS. After discussing the decision making process based on each concept, its characteristics, relations, connections of each concept to decision-making process have been determined. At the same time, different models and figures are presented to enrich the discussion and to highlight precisely the status of each MIS and DSS information system in organizational decision making.
