Commissioning studies of the CMS hadron calorimeter have identified sporadic uncharacteristic noise and a small number of malfunctioning calorimeter channels. This paper discusses the design and performance of the time measurement technique and of the synchronization systems of the CMS hadron calorimeter. Time measurement performance results are presented from test beam data taken in the years 2004 and 2006. For hadronic showers of energy greater than 100 GeV, the timing resolution is measured to be about 1.2 ns. Time synchronization and out-of-time background rejection results are presented from the Cosmic Run At Four Tesla and LHC beam runs taken in the Autumn of 2008. The inter-channel synchronization is measured to be within ±2 ns.

The use of dynamically generated Web content is gaining in popularity over traditional static HTML content. Dynamic Web content is generated on the fly according to the instructions embedded in HTML script files. Such instructions generate HTML by carrying out various forms of tasks such as session tracking, database queries and transactions, dynamic image generation, or even fetching information from remote servers. Popular portal and e-commerce Web pages contain a number of tasks that are executed in a serial manner by traditional multithreaded Web servers. In this ongoing work, we propose a parallel approach for dynamic content generation, and elaborate on how it affects the design and performance of Web servers. We have developed a prototype Web server that supports the parallel processing of tasks involved in the dynamic content generation with improved throughput and response time as compared to the classical (serial) approach.

Os atletas profissionais na nova legislação desportiva A Lei n. 14.597, de 14 de junho de 2023, após longa gestação, instituiu a Lei Geral do Esporte, sancionada com muitos vetos. Na parte trabalhista da novel legislação aparecem algumas novidades, mas manteve-se o arcabouço contido na Lei n. 9.615/98, a qual, inclusive, não foi revogada, ocasionando problemas para os intérpretes e aplicadores dessas leis. Current methods for the study of pigments involve freezing in liquid nitrogen and storage at-80°C or lyophilization until HPLC analysis. These requirements greatly restrict ecophysiological research in remote areas where such resources are hardly available. We aimed to overcome such limitations by developing several techniques not requiring freezing or lyophilization. Two species with contrasting foliar characteristics (Olea europaea and Taraxacum officinale) were chosen. Seven preservation methods were designed, optimized and tested in a field trial. These protocols were compared with a control immediately frozen after collection. Pigments and tocopherols were analysed by HPLC. Main artefacts were chlorophyll epimerization or phaeophytinization, carotenoid isomerization, altered de-epoxidation index and tocopherol degradation. Among all methods, sample desiccation in silica gel provides robust samples (pigment composition was unaffected by storage time or temperature) and almost unaltered pigment profiles, except for a shift in epoxidation state. Although liquid nitrogen freezing and subsequent lyophilization or freezer storage were preferred, when these facilities are either not available or not suitable for long-distance transport, desiccation with silica gel, passive extraction in acetone and/or storage of fresh samples in water vapour saturated atmospheres enable a complete pigment characterization. Silica gel is advisable for long-term sample conservation.

Jurnalisme merupakan sebuah kegiatan pengelolaan informasi yang memiliki rentang sejarah panjang berbarengan dengan perkembangan konsep ruang publik. Penelitian ini berupaya untuk mengkaji asal mula jurnalsme publik dengan menggunakan pandangan Jurgen Habermas mengenai ontologi ruang publik, sejarah pers, dan hubungan ruang publik dengan pers. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan studi kepustakaan yang berkaitan dengan objek penelitian. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa konsep publik yang melekat pada ruang publik memiliki pengertian berbeda dalam sejarah, hingga ditemukannya konsep ruang publik yang sejalan dengan pandangan kita saat ini. Ruang publik dalam pandangan Habermas memiliki dua bentuk; ruang publik politik dan ruang publik sastra. Melalui dua konsep ruang publik tersebut peneliti menemukan kerterkaitan ruang publik dengan perkembangan pers hingga munculnya konsep jurnalisme publik.

Em sistemas de cultivo orgânico, o manejo adequado da adubação orgânica e a ciclagem de nitrogênio são estratégias muito importantes, visando melhorar a fertilidade do solo e aumentar a produtividade. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o impacto de adubos verdes em pré-cultivo, associados a diferentes níveis de nitrogênio em compostos orgânicos, sobre o rendimento de repolho e milho-verde, em sucessão de cultivos no período de 2009 a 2012 e sobre os atributos químicos do solo. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, no esquema de parcelas subdivididas, em três repetições. As parcelas foram constituídas por dois tratamentos (presença e ausência de leguminosa) e nas subparcelas foram instalados cinco tratamentos com sistemas de adubação à base de compostos de distintos níveis de nitrogênio: 1) Ausência de adubação (testemunha); 2) Composto com 1,5% de N; 3) Composto com 2% de N; 4) Composto com 2,5% de N e 5) Composto com 3% de N. Objective: To develop a valid and reliable spinal cord injury (SCI) specific physical functioning (PF) scale for the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) version of the 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey. Design: A mixed qualitative and quantitative research design was used. In phase 1, a pool of SCI-specific PF items was generated based on focus groups with patients and health care providers. In phase 2, the psychometric properties of the SCIspecific PF scale were established. Setting: A VHA SCI center. Participants: The sample consisted of valid responses from 359 veterans with traumatic SCI who were seen at a VHA SCI center during the prior year (2002). Interventions: Not applicable. Main Outcome Measure: Physical functioning in people with SCI. Results: Exploratory factor analysis was conducted separately on respondents with lower neurologic-level injuries (paraplegia, 53% [nϭ190]) and those with higher neurologiclevel injuries (tetraplegia, 45% [nϭ163]) and identified 9 items loading on 1 factor in both groups. These 9 items were included in separate item response theory (IRT) model analyses for each subgroup. Based on the IRT analysis, 1 item was eliminated, resulting in an 8-item, SCI-specific PF scale. Conclusions: Although several of the items in the SCIspecific PF scale showed floor effects, particularly in people with tetraplegia, we found excellent reliability and strong support of convergent and divergent validity of the scale.

O trabalho investiga a intensa jornada de trabalho dos atletas profissionais de esportes eletrônicos, conhecidos como pro-players. O objetivo é  compreender as características distintas desta indústria em expansão, identificar as condições de trabalho dos trabalhadores em questão e analisar as implicações legais e de saúde decorrentes dessas condições. Adotou-se uma abordagem metodológica mista, o estudo inicia com a análise de conteúdo de entrevistas com depoimentos de pro-players no sítio YouTube, focando na avaliação qualitativa para desvendar a jornada laboral desses atletas. A pesquisa também emprega o método lógico-dedutivo para examinar a capacidade do ordenamento jurídico brasileiro em regular eficazmente a jornada de trabalho no esporte eletrônico. Os entrevistados foram selecionados com base na popularidade de suas transmissões ao vivo e podcasts em plataformas como YouTube e HLTV, com ênfase em jogadores de Counter-Strike: Global Offensive e Dota 2. Os resultados revelam jornadas de trabalho prolongadas e desafios na jornada de trabalho enfrentados pelos pro-players. A análise destaca a ambiguidade na aplicação da Lei Pelé (Lei nº 9.615/1998) aos pro-players, evidenciando a necessidade de regulamentações específicas para esta indústria. O estudo conclui enfatizando a urgência de reconhecimento aprimorado das condições de trabalho dos pro-players e a importância de desenvolver regulamentações específicas para a indústria de esportes eletrônicos. Destaca-se a necessidade de conscientização dos pro-players sobre seus direitos trabalhistas e a importância de uma abordagem multidisciplinar, envolvendo Educação Física e Direito Desportivo, para abordar essas questões complexas.

The interventions that are required for both the control and post-invasion restoration of native plant communities depends on several factors, including the efficacy of the measures that are used and how these interact with environmental factors. Here, we report on the results of an experiment on the effects of mechanical removal and herbicide application on the invasive plant Gunnera tinctoria and how an extreme weather event impacted on the invader and on the recovery of native coastal grassland communities. Both removal protocols were largely effective in eradicating mature plants, but the mechanical removal treatment resulted in a major increase in the number of G. tinctoria seedlings, which was exacerbated by the extreme event. Nine months after removal, the number of native species had recovered to c. 80% of that in uninvaded grasslands. This study presents the relationships between levels of toxicity, validation-seeking behavior, emotional affectivity, and desire to quit at higher ranks in the popular multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game, namely League of Legends. Analysis of data collected from Italian participants (N = 370) supports positive correlations between rank and toxicity, rank and validation-seeking behavior, and rank and positive emotion affectivity. In addition, higher ranks are associated with a reduced desire to quit the game caused by toxic behavior. These findings underline the importance of supporting positive interactions between players and intervention programmes to tackle toxic behavior in competitive gaming environments.

Attacks of bark-and wood-boring beetles on mechanically created high stumps of Norway spruce, Picea abies L. (Karst.), were studied in the provinces of Dalarna (Granga Èrde area) and Uppland (Fagero Èn) in central Sweden. The experiment included a total of 362 stumps in the Granga Èrde area as well as 48 stumps and 18 logs at Fagero Èn. Most inspections were conducted in the ®rst and second autumns following the cuttings made to create the stumps. All stumps were attacked by at least one species during the two-year period, and for almost all of them (95%) the initial attacks occurred in the ®rst summer. The most frequently encountered species on the stumps were the scolytids Ips typographus (L.), Pityogenes chalcographus (L.), Hylurgops palliatus (Gyll.), Orthotomicus spp., Trypodendron lineatum (Oliv.), Dryocoetes sp. and Polygraphus poligraphus (L.), and the cerambycids Tetropium spp. and Monochamus sutor (L.). Both the time of cutting and stump diameter in¯uenced beetle colonisation. I. typographus was not found in autumn-cut stumps, while Orthotomicus spp. was found more frequently in autumn-cut stumps than in spring-cut stumps. There was a positive relationship between I. typographus occupancy and stump diameter, while negative relationships were found between stump diameter and H. palliatus and T. lineatum occupancy. Most stumps (ca. 80%) were attacked by more than one bark-and wood-boring species in the ®rst summer. The proportion of stumps attacked was signi®cantly higher than the proportion of logs attacked for P. poligraphus, T. lineatum and Tetropium spp., whereas the opposite was true for I. typographus. The percentage of bark area utilised by I. typographus was signi®cantly higher in logs than in stumps.

Telah dilakukan penelitian mengenai pengaruh jenis serat alam yang berbeda yaitu serat ampas tebu, serat sabut kelapa dan serat buah bintaro terhadap koefisien absorpsi bunyi dengan menggunakan metode tabung impedansi. Sampel yang digunakan yaitu material akustik dengan massa serat 0,3 gr. Rentang frekuensi yang digunakan adalah 500, 1000, 2000 dan 4000 Hz. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa semakin kecil ukuran partikel serat maka semakin tinggi nilai koefisien absorbs bunyi dan semakin tinggi tingkat porositas permukaan sampel yang digunakan maka semakin tinggi nilai koefisien absorpsi bunyipada material komposit serat ampas tebu dengan massa 0,3 gr dan serat sabut buah kelapa dengan massa 0,3 gr frekuensi 500 Hz. Densitas material dengan kerapatan yang baik digunakan berkisar 0,4 gr/cm3 – 0,9 gr/cm3, penelitian ini menghasilkan nilai densitas yang tinggi =1,29 gr/cm3. Devido à carência de informações sobre adubação orgânica para alface e uma avaliação quanto à sua influência nos atributos biológicos do ambiente, este trabalho objetivou estudar o efeito de diferentes sistemas de manejo da mucuna preta e o uso de adubação orgânica sólida sobre a diversidade e biomassa microbiana do solo. Os tratamentos consistiram do manejo da mucuna preta, incorporada ou não ao solo, e aplicação de esterco bovino, composto, adubo orgânico comercial e testemunha sem adubação. Os atributos foram avaliados nas seguintes épocas: momento do manejo da mucuna e aos 15, 55 e 105 dias após esse manejo. O manejo e os tratamentos com adubo orgânico sólido não influenciaram de forma significativa na biomassa microbiana e na população bacteriana do solo. Houve aumento na população de fungo coma incorporação da mucuna preta. A incorporação da mucuna preta e o tratamento com composto foram favoráveis para o incremento de fungos micorrízicos. Os tratamentos consistiram do manejo da mucuna preta, incorporada ou não ao solo, e aplicação de esterco bovino, composto e adubo orgânico comercial. Mesin blow cleaning digunakan untuk membersihkan produk jadi untuk menjaga quality control. Mesin blow cleaning ini memiliki tingkat kebisingan yang sangat tinggi yaitu sebesar 91-110 Db. Tingkat kebisingan yang melewati ambang batas ini sangat berpengaruh pada kesehatan orang yang ada disekitarnya.Untuk meredam tingkat kebisingan tersebut digunakanlah silincer. Silincer adalah perangkat yang digunakan untuk mengurangi noise/ kebisingan suara yang muncul dari mesin blow cleaning. Penelitian ini menggunakan silincer dibagi tipe sound absorbment, yang terdiri dari beberapa bagian yaitu inner pipe, bahan peredam dan housing. Bahan peredam yang digunakan adalah styrofoam, kayu lapis, dan busa. Untuk mengukur tingkat kebisingan digunakan sound level meter. Untuk mengukur besarnya tekanan udara digunakan barometer.Dari hasil penelitian ini dapat di simpulkan bahwa kayu lapis memiliki peredaman yang paling baik sebesar 10,3% dari pengukuran awal. The analysis is based on a semiotic theoretical and methodological approach and focuses on the non-arbitrary choice of lexical/phonological/syntactic/semantic forms by the author as a means of achieving textual cohesion. Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451° is a lyrical anti-utopia portraying the massive attack of 'consumer civilization' standards on the traditional cultural values of society. The message is conveyed via an array of word systems: the phonological system based on the alliteration of [s] creating the impression of burning paper, the conceptual-associative field 'dark-cold-empty', the metaphoricmetonymic systems 'hands and body parts' and 'show-carnival', the use of internal dialogue and monologue, and such syntactic strategies as elliptical sentences, tagquestions, and more. The findings of this study obtained through a qualitative analysis show how the effect of Bradbury's work is created by the author's sophisticated use of multiple word systems at all levels of language structure.

Telah dihasilkan komposisi busa yang efektif sebagai bahan peredam suara berdasarkan nilai koefisien absorbsi suara. Metode yang dilakukan adalah eksperimen, dengan mencampurkan bahan utama (polyurethan) dan bahan pengembang (isocyanate). Terdapat lima variasi penelitian, dengan cairan pengembang sebagai variabel kontrol. Adapun hasil yang diperoleh dari variasi pertama hingga kelima berturut-turut adalah 0,152; 0,072; 0,042; 0,028 dan 0,056. Dari hasil temuan berupa busa bahan poliurethan dapat disimpulkan bahwa semakin sedikit polyurethan yang ditambahkan semakin besar nilai koefisien absorbsi sehingga kemampuan meredam suara busa menjadi lebih baik.

This paper is an attempt to analyze Ray Bradbury"s Fahrenheit 451(1953) under the light of Jean Baudrillard"s notions on the media and the influences it exerts on people"s daily lives, and with an eye to Michel Foucault"s surveillance as well. The titlementioned work, it is suggested, portrays a representative sample of a culture where different fields including books, education, and history fall under the influence of the media. Bradbury presents a society in which its inhabitants are bombarded with excessive data transmitted through television most of which is detrimental and not reliable. It is concluded that the presented culture in the novel is a microcosm of contemporary societies where authorities keep their subjects under control, engendering an atmosphere of anxiety, trepidation and apprehension for subversive forces and therefore preclude any disturbance on the part of them.

Commissioning studies of the CMS hadron calorimeter have identified sporadic uncharacteristic noise and a small number of malfunctioning calorimeter channels. Algorithms have been developed to identify and address these problems in the data. The methods have been tested on cosmic ray muon data, calorimeter noise data, and single beam data collected with CMS in 2008. The noise rejection algorithms can be applied to LHC collision data at the trigger level or in the offline analysis. The application of the algorithms at the trigger level is shown to remove 90% of noise events with fake missing transverse energy above 100 GeV, which is sufficient for the CMS physics trigger operation.

Resumo Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o desempenho agronômico de algumas cultivares e híbridos de repolho em sistema orgânico nas condições de verão do Distrito Federal. O experimento foi conduzido na Área de Pesquisa e Produção Orgânica de Hortaliças (APPOH) da Embrapa Hortaliças, DF. O delineamento experimental adotado foi o de blocos casualizados. Foram testadas quatro cultivares de polinização aberta (Louco de Verão, União, Coração de Boi, 60 dias) e nove híbridos de repolho (Fuyutoyo, Astrus, Saturno, Sekai, Sooshu, Savoy Ace, Bob Cat Shutoku, Kenzan), resultando em 13 tratamentos com quatro repetições. Foram avaliados a produção comercial e o peso médio de cabeças, estande final e produção de matéria seca. Os hibridos apresentaram as produtividades e massa média de cabeça mais elevadas com destaque para o grupo Fuyutoyo, Sekai, Astrus e Saturno. Louco de Verão e 60 dias foram os mais produtivos entre as cultivares de polinização aberta e apresentaram produção e peso médio de cabeças semelhante à da maioria dos híbridos. The white cachama (<em>Piaractus brachypomus</em>) and the black cachama (<em>Colossoma macropomum</em>), are species of fish belonging to the family of the Caracides. Both are native to the Amazon River and Orinoco basins, are part of river fishing and represent an abundant and desirable fishery product. In Venezuela, cachama has been cultivated since 1977 when induced reproduction was achieved at the Guanapito Hydrobiological Station, in Guárico State. For the cultivation of the species to be carried out successfully, the structure to be used and the density at which the crop is to be grown, the type of crop, the good management of the pond, the breeding stages must be taken into account and the possible diseases to which he may be subjected.
