Much scholarship has recently been done on the Satanology (Satan-concept) of New Testament books or writers. This study attends to the Satanology of early "non-canonical" Christian writings, which have been comparatively under-researched. The literature examined includes the so-called Apostolic Fathers and other texts that can be reliably dated to c. 100-150 C.E., namely Ascension of Isaiah, Apocalypse of Peter, Odes of Solomon, Gospel of Truth, Ptolemy's Letter to Flora and Justin Martyr's writings. Over 160 certain or probable references to Satan, under various designations, are identified. Analysis of this data set proceeds in two directions. The first looks at the concept's explanatory power: for what kinds of evil did Satanology help to account? The discussion traverses various loci of perceived satanic activity, from the human heart to community boundaries to earthly political authorities to a dualistic cosmos to the abstract realm of ideas. The second analytical section explores ways that Christian writers and communities incorporated Satanology into their religious life through liturgical forms, hermeneutics for reading the Jewish Scriptures, and theological debates about the nature of God and evil. Satanology is found to have been a pervasive and distinctive feature of Christianity in the early subapostolic period.

Summary

The paper examines the restoration of the church network in the Strandzha Mountains region around the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, tracing the interaction between builders and icon painters from the vicinity of Gabrovo and Tryavna within the context of this process. The study is based on fieldwork and archival research under the project entitled Comprehensive and Innovative Methods for Identification and Study of the Tangible and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Central and Eastern Strandzha against the Backdrop of Migration and Demographic Decline, funded by the National Science Fund of Bulgaria. Here, published for the first time, are the inscriptions on the altar tables of the churches in that area. The historical records available testify to a large-scale, targeted policy aimed at reviving and fostering local church/religious life in the decades following the Russo-Turkish Liberation War of 1877-1878 in the territory of the Municipality of Sredets (as opposed to the Municipality of Malko Turnovo, which remained within the borders of the Ottoman Empire up until 1912). Under the authority and supervision of Seraphim, Metropolitan of Sliven, and his Vicar Bishop and successor Gervasius of Leuke, the local church municipalities attracted builder teams from the vicinity of Gabrovo, which over time renovated the war-damaged temples in the town of Sredets and the village of Svetlina and built new churches in the villages of Gorno and Dolno Yabalkovo, Bistrets, Momina Tsarkva and, most probably also the churches in the villages of Fakia, Valchanovo and Varovnik. Active participants in this process were Dimitar Minev and Georgi Dimitrov, master icon painters from the town of Tryavna who painted icons for most of the abovementioned churches.

Význam chrámových inventářů tkví především v tom, že nám dávají představu o zaniklém bohatství středověkých pokladnic. Valná většina děl, která jsou v nich popsána už neexistuje. Zanikla kvůli drahocennosti svého materiálu použitého pro ražbu mincí či výrobu nových uměleckořemeslných prací. Svatovítské inventáře z lucemburského období jsou hlavním pramenem pro poznání tehdejší podoby, významu a funkce chrámového pokladu u sv. Víta. Bohatý informační potenciál inventářů se pokusíme ukázat na několika příkladech. Nejdříve se budu zabývat strukturou jednotlivých inventářů. Dále se zaměřím na inventární údaje týkající se vybavení kaple sv.Václava a jeho hrobu a záznamy související s kultem sv. Zikmunda. Pro dokreslení uvedu několik příkladů různorodých informací, které vyplývají z inventárních záznamů. Příspěvek vychází z diplomové práce "Zlatnické přírůstky svatovítského chrámového pokladu v lucemburské době", kterou píši pod vedením dr. Karla Otavského. 1 Jejím cílem je zmapovat změny, jimiž chrámový poklad prošel během vlády Lucemburků. Je založena na analýze sedmi dochovaných inventářů Svatovítského pokladu z let 1354, 1355, ca. 1365, 1368, 1374, 1387 a 1396. Téma svatovítského pokladu bylo vyčerpávajícím způsobem zpracováno Antonínem Podlahou a Eduardem Šittlerem v knize "Chrámový poklad u sv.Víta. Jeho dějiny a popis" vydaném roku 1903. V ní shromáždili vedle množství listinného materiálu i hlavní inventáře z let 1354, 1355 a 1387. Ze zbývajících inventářů otiskli pouze ty části, kde se tyto seznamy odlišují od inventáře z roku 1355, z něhož vycházely. 2 Toto bezesporu záslužné a komplexní dílo ale vyžaduje po stu letech od svého vytištění revizi a pokud jde o inventáře i jejich nové čtení. Důvodem je, že se Podlaha a Šittler soustředili především na vlastní výčet předmětů a nevěnovali větší pozornost množství detailů zajímavých z uměleckohistorického či historického hlediska. Například se nezabývali záznamy o poškození jednotlivých děl, doklady o jejich úpravách a přepracováních, poznámkami o vyjmutí částí relikvií, o výměnách relikviářů nebo údaji o použitých klenotnických technikách. Z recentní literatury se tématu věnuje článek Karla Otavského "Der Prager Domschatz im Lichte der Quellen: Ein Sonderfall unter spätmittelalterlichen Kirchenschätzen" z roku 2010. Z něj také vychází následující rozdělení inventářů do tří skupin podle formálního 1 Předmětem zájmu zůstávají pouze zlatnická díla, textilie nejsou do rámce práce zahrnuty. 2 PODLAHA/ŠITTLER 1903, I-LX. zpracování. 3 Sedm dochovaných inventářů svatovítského pokladu, z nichž některé existují ve více opisech, můžeme rozdělit do tří různých redakcí z nichž každá vykazuje jiné uspořádání jednotlivých položek. První zachovaný inventář byl užíván zhruba do podzimu 1354. Zaznamenává období, kdy se Karel IV. snažil katedrální poklad rozšířit, aby odpovídal politicko-církevnímu významu pražského arcibiskupství. Není strukturován standardně, což souvisí s tím, že v dané době došlo k velkému příbytku jednotlivých položek. První část inventáře obsahuje 28 významných relikvií a zlatnických prací darovaných Karlem od počátku jeho vlády do léta 1353. V následující části je vložen starší inventář přemyslovského pokladu nadepsaný Ista que sequntur fuerunt prius in ecclesia Pragensi se zhruba 80ti položkami (kromě mešních rouch). Dále obsahuje další tři seznamy, které dohromady čítají 72 darovaných relikvií, které Karel získal mezi srpnem 1353 a létem 1354 na svých cestách po Švábsku, Porýní, Elsasku, Lotrinsku, a Švýcarsku. 4

Scholars have traditionally read John Chrysostom's baptismal instructions, preached in Antioch, as examples of a new, post-Constantinian paradigm in liturgical theology: the Romans 6 notion of baptism as death and resurrection with Christ. This article argues that the metaphor of "putting on Christ" from Galatians 3:27 is the more dominant metaphor for Chrysostom. He connected the "putting on" of Christ in baptism to the martyrs' imitation of Christ in death. To reinforce this connection, he brought the newly-baptized to the tombs of martyrs on the outskirts of Antioch, where he preached some of the baptismal instructions. He kept their memory of martyrdom alive by allowing martyred bodies to "speak" to a new generation of Christians.

Auch in der heutigen Zeit bleibt der liturgische Bereich der Kirche weiter hin einer der wichtigsten und bedeutungsvollsten. Die christliche Gemeinde, die zum Gottesdienst zusammenkommt, gilt als eine gegliederte Versammlung mit verschiedenen liturgischen Diensten. Diese Dienste haben eine sowohl systematische als auch praktisch-theologische
Bedeutung und stellen den tiefen Sinn des christlichen Glaubenslebens dar. Da es zahlreiche und vielfältige liturgische Ämter und Dienste gibt, wird in dieser Arbeit der Versuch unternommen, die Entstehung und Entwicklung, sowie die aktuelle Bedeutung des Akolythen darzustellen, sowie seine Rolle und Aufgabe in der Liturgie zu reflektieren. Im ersten Teil dieser Arbeit wird auf das Wesen der Kirche in ihrer gemeinschaftlichen Dimension, sowie auf den Aspekt der Versammlung und der gemeinsamen Feier eingegangen, um so ein grundlegendes Verständnis für den Dienst des Akolythen zu schaffen. Ein zweiter Teil wird in einem eher allgemein gehaltenen Grundriss die Entstehung und Entwicklung des liturgischen Dienstes des Akolythen aus der Sicht der Kirchengeschichte darlegen. In diesem Kontext ist es aber unbedingt notwendig, die aktuelle Situation und die m glichen Herausforderungen für diesen Dienst in der heutigen Kirche immer wieder im Blick zu haben, um so ein rein historische Bearbeitung dieser Thematik zu vermeiden. Ein kurzer allgemeiner Exkurs in den Bereich der Jugendliturgie als ein bedeutsamer Bestandteil der pastoralen Arbeit und möglicher Bereich einer besseren Integration der Jugendlichen in das Leben ihrer kirchlichen Gemeinden wird den Abschluss der vorliegenden Arbeit bilden.

Exegesegeschichtlich ist die Erklärung von Ps 140 (141) 2 ein methodisches Musterbeispiel patristischer Schriftauslegung: Nach der Vergewisserung über den auszulegenden Text einschließlich textkritischer Varianten bietet Chrysostomus eine historische Sacherklärung des alttestamentlichen Phänomens, auch wenn er dieses nicht nur im Lichte allgemeiner Kultterminologie, sondern auch der neutestamentlichen Rezeption vor allem im Hebräerbrief, aber auch zum Beispiel in 1 Petr 2,5 erschließt und somit zumindest für biblisch informierte Ohren bereits in der historisch-sachlichen Interpretation auch metaphorische Resonanzen anklingen läßt. Im dritten Schritt folgt die paränetische Aktualisierung für das Auditorium in Form jener anthropologischen Allegorese, die schon im biblischen Vergleich des Gebets mit Weihrauch und des Erhebens der Hände mit dem Abendopfer angelegt ist und im vierten Schritt in den direkten Imperativ mündet; 1 Petr 2,5 mit seiner kultmetaphorischen Ekklesiologie und die paulinische Rede von den Christen als Tempel und Leib Christi sind wichtige Intertexte dieser abschließenden Anwendung.
Liturgiehistorisch bezeugt schon die Einleitung zur ganzen Homilie die auch sonst breit belegte Verwendung von Ps 140 (141) als Abend- und Ps 62 (63) als Morgenpsalm der Tagzeitenliturgie in Antiochien; bemerkenswert ist der Hinweis darauf, daß die ganze Gemeinde psalliert und sich nicht etwa nur durch einen Kehrvers an der Psalmodie beteiligt.
Theologisch bedeutsam ist die Erklärung, durch den Gesang dieser Psalmen würden die Sünden des Tages getilgt; es handelt sich um eine Auffassung, die umso klarer der Überzeugung des Chrysostomus entspringt, als sie nicht wirklich aus dem biblischen Text zu gewinnen ist. Der Tagzeitenliturgie Bußcharakter zuzuschreiben, lag im Zug der Zeit und war wohl auch ein Grund für die seit dieser Epoche – wenn auch nicht im Antiochien des Chrysostomus – bezeugte Verbreitung von Ps 50 (51) als Morgenpsalm; auch die Dimension der Versöhnung wird gelegentlich angesprochen. Der Psalmodie selbst wird freilich nirgends so deutlich die sakramentliche Wirkung der Sündenvergebung zugeschrieben wie in der vorliegenden Homilie zum täglichen Abendpsalm 140 (141), welcher nach Johannes Chrysostomus von den Vätern angeordnet wurde, damit er „als ein Heilmittel gesagt werde, das rettet und von Sünden reinigt“ (PG 55, 427) – ein Höhepunkt der altkirchlichen Auffassung von der Wirksamkeit des Wortes Gottes.

La cristología ha tratado de pensar nuevamente el misterio de la Encamación del Señor, ha redescubierto su trascendencia y las consecuencias enormes que de ella se siguen para unaWeltanschauungque pretenda ser verdaderamente cristiana, o sea, en y desde Cristo. Así ha experimentado nuevamente la profunda relación en el único misterio de Cristo, Dios encarnado, de la Irrupción de lo divino en el mundo y la redención del mismo. Es esto y no otra cosa el objeto central de la cristología, inteligencia de Cristo. En ella hay un lazo Indestructible entre el esse y el operari, entre cristología (en sentido ontológico) y soteriología. No es posible llegar a una recta comprensión del misterio desde una acentuación unilateral.

This article examines the practice of fasting on the Sabbath found among Roman Christians and Marcionites alike. Whereas it has been suggested that Roman practice is derived from that of Marcion, this is seen as unlikely as Roman Christian fasting was uninterrupted from Friday to Saturday, whereas Marcionites kept a cena pura. The conclusion is that Roman Christian fasting is derived from the historic practice of Roman Jewish circles (where fasting on the Sabbath was an established custom). The origin of Marcionite practice is uncertain, although the practice of Jews or Christians in Pontus is a possible source.
Sommaire Cet article examine la pratique du jeûne le jour du sabbat trouvé parmi les chrétiens romains et marcionites semblables. Considérant qu'il a été suggéré que la pratique romaine est dérivée de celle de Marcion, cela est considéré comme peu probable que le jeûne chrétien romain était ininterrompue de vendredi à samedi, alors que les Marcionites gardait un pura cena. La conclusion est que le jeûne romain chrétien est dérivé de la pratique historique de cercles juifs romains (où le jeûne le jour du sabbat était une coutume établie). L'origine de la pratique marcionite est incertaine, bien que la pratique des juifs ou des chrétiens de Pontus est une source possible.

For centuries, Christian theology has understood the Eucharist in terms of metaphysics or in protest against it. Today an opening has been made to imagine the sacrament through the method of phenomenology, bringing about new theological life and meaning. In Dialectical Anatomy of the Eucharist, Donald Wallenfang conducts a sustained analysis of the Eucharist through the aperture of phenomenology, yet concludes the study with poetic and metaphysical twists. Engaging the work of Jean-Luc Marion, Paul Ricoeur, and Emmanuel Levinas, Wallenfang proposes pioneering ideas for contemporary sacramental theology that have vast implications for interfaith and interreligious dialogue. By tapping into the various currents within the Judeo-Christian tradition--Jewish, Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant--a radical argument is developed that leverages the tension among them all. Several new frontiers are explored: dialectical theology, a fourth phenomenological reduction, the phenomenology of human personhood, the poetics of the Eucharist, and a reinterpretation of the concept of gift as conversation. On the whole, Wallenfang advances recent debates surrounding the relationship between phenomenology and theology by claiming an uncanny way out of emerging dead ends in philosophical theology: return to the fray.

Предметом исследования данной статьи является структура последования пятой субботы Великого поста (Субботы акафиста). Это богослужение уникально тем, что именно на нем исполняется акафист - древний гимн в честь Пресвятой Богородицы, связанный с праздником Благовещения. Объектом для исследования послужил ряд рукописей славянских Триодей XII-XIV вв. В работе представлены и проанализированы сведения из девяти рукописных источников. При этом восемь из них изучены de visu; один - в факсимильном издании. Основной метод, примененный в исследовании, - метод типологического анализа, позволивший определить сходство последования богослужения Субботы акафиста с аналогичным последованием зафиксированным в памятниках греческого византийского богослужения. Исследование показало, что богослужение Субботы акафиста несколько раз компилировалось под одну из известных западновизантийских литургических моделей. При чем на компиляцию указывают не только типологические, но и текстологические характеристики. Подобный вывод дает направление к новому пониманию составления и развития триодного сборника на славянской почве

The Influences of the Dominican Order in the Middle Ages

This interdisciplinary conference will explore the influences of the Dominican Order on all aspects of medieval life, encompassing the large-scale influences of the Order and the legacy of its prominent figures, as well as the impact that the Order had on those that came into contact with it.

The keynote paper will be delivered by Mary Rouse, on ‘The Vital Impact of the Dominicans on Books at the University of Paris, 1217-1350’.  The program will feature papers on the Dominican influence in England, Northern Europe, Italy, Eastern Europe, and the Byzantine world; the influence of Friars on other movements and communities; Dominican influence on architecture, art, books, music and liturgy; and influential Dominican philosophers and theologians.

Confirmed speakers are from the UK, the USA, Canada, Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.  In addition, the conference will include a walking tour of medieval Oxford, and a concert of music that can be associated with the Dominican Order.

he author of the book of Hebrews (hereater Auctor ad Hebraeos) is widely recognized as a talented theologian. his is largely because he, like the authors of Matthew and Romans, knows how to draw abundantly on Holy Scripture and is skilled at weaving the many references smoothly into his sophisticated train of thought. One may rightly ask, however, just why this is so, and also why he incorporates as many as thirty-four explicit quotations identiiable by means of their formulaic introduction. he same question pertains to his insertion of two-thirds of these quotations into the irst third of the text, with more than half of these from the Psalms. Why does he reiterate certain quotes and not others? Further, since the two longest are among those repeated, Ps 95 (lxx 94):7b-11 and Jer 31 (lxx 38):31-34, does a correlation perhaps exist between them? Finally, what kind of function does the irst quotation from Ps 2:7 fulill? Many other questions could be added to these, all considering the author's use of Scripture. his subject already has a substantial history of research, 1 including study of the following subject areas: (1) the research * I am sincerely grateful to the editors of this ine book project, Eric F. Przypadek posoborowej modyfikacji w obrzędach Święceń i święceń niższych W numerze 25. konstytucji Sacrosanctum Concilium, uchwalonej przez Sobór Watykański II i promulgowanej przez papieża Pawła VI w grudniu 1963, znajduje się dyrektywa o następującym brzmieniu: "Księgi liturgiczne niech zostaną jak najrychlej zrewidowane z udziałem znawców i po konsultacji z biskupami z różnych stron świata" 1 .

L’idea che sottende a questo scritto è contribuire alla presa di consapevolezza di un ritardo nella comprensione pastorale del linguaggio musicale come pragmatica epistemologica fondamentale per l’efficacia sacramentale del momento celebrativo, nel tessuto delle dinamiche dialogiche tra l’uomo e Dio che il rito dischiude. Tra i linguaggi estetici, sin dall’antichità quello musicale è quello ritenuto come il più connaturale al comunicarsi del divino, per l’intrinseca qualità liminale delle sue dinamiche e dei rapporti che lo costituiscono come linguaggio dell’eccedenza e, per questo, come forma espressiva privilegiata per aprire l’accesso a ciò che trascende l’essere umano. Tuttavia, nelle nostre comunità come nelle commissioni di musica sacra, si discute ancora troppo su quali canti fare, più che su quali dinamiche una certa musica mette in campo nella celebrazione liturgica. Il disorientamento nasce dalla difficoltà di individuare uno statuto definitivo per l’arte musicale del rito, che rispetti gli equilibri fra tradizione e adattamento, contenuto teologico e cultura, oggettività della rivelazione e soggettività della percezione (dell’oggetto della rivelazione), mediazione e immediatezza nel sentimento del sacro. Il Concilio Vaticano II apre una strada che incide fortemente sulla necessità di rivedere le forme dell’annuncio, soprattutto rituali, della fede, e dunque i linguaggi e le coordinate di una espressione del rapporto col divino quanto mai ricca e variegata, quanto ricca è la tavolozza dei colori dell’esperienza umana. Così dagli anni ‘70 nel contesto ordinario delle nostre celebrazioni si può trovare di tutto nello stesso tempo, dal brano classico alla canzoncina pop, dal canto gregoriano a cappella alla musica con accompagnamento elettronico, all’assenza del musicale, avvertito come accessorio. Se la varietà delle scelte è opportuna e giustificata dalla necessità di venire incontro alle esigenze di un’assemblea liturgica sempre  differente (talvolta disgregata in specifici gruppi e fasce di età di fanciulli, di giovani, di anziani, di famiglie, di scout...), e dunque dal compito della regia celebrativa di tenere presente la concretezza del popolo di Dio, occorre tuttavia ricercare (e una volta trovate salvaguardare) quelle che sono le conditiones sine qua non di una autentica efficacia (espressiva e quindi sacramentale) rituale. La presente ricerca si propone di mostrare come la musica sia parte integrante del rito al punto tale da essere identificata attraverso l’esperienza del ritmo (esperienza connaturale sia alla musica che al rito). Essa non è un elemento secondario della celebrazione che si possa tralasciare, ma la sua presenza imprescindibile nel rito è legata alla sua efficacia teologale, per la sua capacità di incidere, con le sue dinamiche, nel profondo del sentimento originario del sacro, rendendo il rito gioioso e desiderabile, vitale ed efficace. L’ambito di questo studio è la musica del rito e per il rito, per indagare quale musica sia quella realmente liturgica. Una volta precisata la musica nel contesto performativo del rito delineando alcuni tratti per una essenziale fenomenologia del rito in riferimento alla musica, verranno delineati gli scenari aperti dalla musica rituale per il suo decisivo valore simbolico. Fondamentale è riconoscere le condizioni imprescindibili della musica come rito. Essa mette infatti in campo un tipo di comunicazione che è quella di cui vive l’azione rituale, dal momento che chiama in causa il sacro, per rispettarne lo statuto non può essere tradotta in parole e concetti. La dinamica di rivelazione si gioca sempre all’interno dello spazio personale di chi partecipa al rito, in maniera mai anticipabile. La dia-logica del rito non è la logica dell’utile e del calcolo, ma lo spazio in cui può farsi strada la luce dell’inatteso. Proprio questa capacità, che il musicale custodisce, di condurre l’uomo a una sorta di ‘svuotamento’ contenutistico che lascia spazio all’emozione, permette l’apertura a una dimensione liminale e fa sì che la musica possa essere una modalità dell’accadere dell’esperienza originaria del sacro. È  qui che diventa possibile parlare dell’efficacia sacramentale della musica per il rito.

Die Tagzeitenliturgie ist der tägliche Gottesdienst der Kirche, auch wenn sie in Praxis und Bewusstsein der meisten Gemeinden gegenüber einem zunehmend inflationären Messwesen und Resten sekundärer Andachtspraxis in den Hintergrund getreten ist und faktisch häufig nur mehr als Sonderübung religiöser Spezialisten wahrgenommen wird. Das liegt auch daran, dass ihre überkommene Gestalt stark von monastischer Spiritualität geprägt ist; speziell im Westen ist eine gemeindegerechte Form des täglichen Gottesdienstes zur Ausnahme geworden, wenngleich in jüngerer Zeit bemerkenswerte Neuaufbrüche festzustellen sind.

gued that reformed vernacular religion was not in fact new but on a continuum with the writings of early church fathers. The Apologie was published in both Latin and English in 1562,15 thereby aiming to reach a broad readership throughout Europe and within England, and was quicldy followed by a revised translation by Lady Anne Bacon (mother of Francis Bacon) in 1564. Bacon's 1564 translation occasioned a vigorous response by the Catholic apologist Thomas Harding, who, in the process of chastizing Jewel for misunderstanding Justinian, misreading scripture, and debasing the sacred languages of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew, raised the knotty issue of word choice: "The third lie is, in that they saie, we do whisper al our Seruice, so is the Latine, albeit this good Lady liketh better the terme of mumblinge."16 This particular "terme" comes from a vernacular idiom that Harding sees as distant from the "mystical tongue" of church Latin and the learned tongue of Justinian's Latin. He associates it with the "common prophane tongue" "moste vsed of the vulgare sorte," perhaps implicitly (through the "good Lady" translator) the gendered mother tongue (5I5). Bacon's translation was fully sanctioned by Jewel, and thus Harding's pejorative "good Lady" aims at two birds with one stone: it challenges Bacon's lexicon but also Jewel's defense of the vernacular's authority over the Word. Harding, in other words, turns the non-Latinate "mumblinge" against itself to encapsulate the distance between Jewel's vernacular theology and early Christian precedents, emphasizing that mumbling is a matter of English, not "the Latine."

La caridad cristiana viene de la conciencia de que Dios es Padre, nos ama, y nosotros somos realmente hermanos, y debemos atender como tales a los más necesitados. En este artículo se trata de como las aportaciones caritativas hechas siempre en el momento del Ofertorio de la Santa Misa se fueron integrando en la liturgia de la misma a través de los tiempos, dejando algunos curiosos vestigios.
Posiblemente el vestigio litúrgico más destacado que une  liturgia y caridad sea la presencia de los dos papeles principales de los celebrantes de la Santa Misa, nos referimos al presbítero como ministro de la predicación y Consagración Eucaristica junto con su auxiliar el diácono como encargado de la asistencia y las obras de caridad a los más necesitados de la comunidad (diaconía). Dos figuras clericales que se unen en la celebración litúrgica de la Santa Misa, como imprescindible en la visión evangelica es la "unión de culto y caridad" que forma parte esencial del cristianismo y que se ha manifestado desde la Iglesia primitiva .
Se pone de manifiesto también como desde principios del siglo VI cuando se comienza con la entrega anual del diezmo en especies , aunque fuera de la celebración de la misa como un tributo obligado para la Iglesia, desde entonces el vinculo de las ofrendas como una “forma litúrgica” de ejercer la caridad cristiana se debilita. A ello contribuyó también la introducción del pan ácimo en las hostias consagradas en las misas, eliminando la presencia del pan común fermentado apto para ser entregado en cantidades notables a los pobres.
Esa evolución culmina en la  configuración de la misa tradicional que pervivió desde el s. XVI hasta mediados del s. XX y conservó algunas rúbricas que recordaban la entrega de las ofrendas en especies del pan y del vino por parte del pueblo. Es decir desde las constituciones del Concilio de Trento hasta que los principios del Movimiento Litúrgico encuentran eco en el papa Pío XII. Así  en la misa tridentina en el ritual del Ofertorio disocia de manera definitiva la ofrenda eucarística que ocurre en el altar, de la entrega de bienes correspondiente a la exigencia cristiana de compartir en caridad con el pobre que se materializó definitivamente en una cuestación monetaria sin ninguna vinculación con lo que pasa en el altar. Mientras en el altar se ofrecen los dones eucarísticos (oblatas) simplemente de manera simultánea en la nave de los fieles ocurre el acto sin trasfondo litúrgico de recoger el dinero en el cestillo o cepillo que es directamente llevado a la sacristía.
Las indicaciones del el Concilio Vaticano II, fueron interpretadas como que de alguna manera había de restaurar el sentido litúrgico de la participación del pueblo en el Ofertorio. Se recuperó por ello para las misas solemnes una ceremonia del Ofertorio que podía recordar los usos de la Iglesia primitiva. De esta manera los fieles  llegan en procesión a través de la nave  presentando unas “ofrendas simbólicas” consistentes en diversos elementos necesarios para la celebración de la misa sacrificial tales como el pan y el vino, los vasos sagrados etc, ; elementos que el celebrante recoge para subirlos al altar y proceder posteriormente a su ministerio sacerdotal de celebrar el Santo Sacrificio actuando In Persona Christi con la materia de los dones presentados.

INTRODUZIONE L'elaborazione del Lezionario della Messa è stata una delle ope-razioni più complesse di tutta la Riforma Liturgica. Numerosi sono stati i progetti, le sperimentazioni, le proposte, gli studi elaborati dal Coetus XI prima di giungere all'attuale Lezionario. È ben noto come il nuovo Lezionario tragga la sua origine dal desiderio del Concilio-nonostante le resistenze di alcuni Padri che reputavano i fedeli non sufficientemente pronti ad accogliere in abbondanza la Parola di Dio-di aprire i tesori della Sacra Scrittura al popolo di Dio 1. In questa sede prenderemo in esame l'attività del Coetus XI dal 1964 al 1965, le sue diverse fasi e i progetti di tale lavoro così lungo e significativo 2. 1. Gesänge tragen besonders zur charakteristischen Spiritualität einer liturgischen Tradition bei; sie prägen sich tiefer ein als Lesungen oder Gebete. Was die römische Liturgie gegenüber anderen Riten des Ostens und Westens besonders auszeichnet, ist ihr Biblizismus: Selbst um das Innerste christlicher Feste auszudrücken, bedienen sich die gregorianischen Gesänge praktisch ausschließlich der Bibel, vornehmlich der Psalmen. Dabei greift die liturgische Psalmenverwendung einerseits auf Inhalte und Methoden der Deutung zurück, die schon zum Grundbestand neutestamentlicher Theologien gehören; andererseits setzt sie eine Vertrautheit mit dem kanonischen Text voraus, die nur durch ständige Rezitation hergestellt werden kann.

Liturgie- und predigtgeschichtliche Bedeutung gewinnt der vorgestellte Text vor allem durch seine mutmaßliche Datierung nicht nur vor allen anderen erhaltenen Homilien auf das Epiphaniefest, sondern unter die ältesten Predigten über die Geburt Christi überhaupt, sowie durch seine Herkunft nicht aus einem „stilbildenden Zentrum“ altkirchlicher Liturgiegeschichte, sondern aus der Provinz; die Etablierung von Epiphanie als Geburtsfest im Einflußbereich von Jerusalem ist damit möglicherweise früher belegt als bislang generell angenommen. Das letzte Wort über die Titus-Fragmente De Epiphania hat freilich schon am Beginn des letzten Jahrhunderts Joseph Sickenberger „einem Orientalisten von Fach überlassen.“ Die Festgabe für einen der prominentesten Orientalisten unter den heutigen Liturgiewissenschaftlern sei der Anlaß, an diese noch immer ausstehende Aufgabe zu erinnern.
