Islamic Heresiography

This article addresses the present debate regarding the study of Islam and modernity by highlighting conceptions of mediation, both implicit and explicit, predominant in the contemporary anthropology of Islam. The essay comprises two parts. The first explainss the historical, conceptual significance of mediation to the subfield from its roots in 19th century anthropology and comparative religion through its consolidation on Talal Asad'sconception of Islam as a "discursive tradition" in The Idea of an Anthropology of Islam. Specifically, it proposes that Asad's critical intervention consisted in defining Islam as a tradition of mediation, that is, a tradition of reiterative individual and collective self-making encompassing the distinct media of text, ritual, and institution, compatible with but never determined by the material, mediating conditions of Muslims' particular cultural and historical contexts. The second part of the article, a response to Aaron Rock-Singer's insightful and timely provocation, argues that Asad's genealogical critiques of religion and secularism presented a very different reading of Islam as a tradition of mediation vis-à-vis the material conditions of modernity. Specifically, I suggest that, in reframing global capital and modern states as material instantiations of modern Euro-American secular mediation, Asad now opposed Islam's traditions to their to material contexts. The result, no doubt unintended, was a new and powerful emphasis on Islam's opposition and Muslims' resistances not simply to secular modernism, but to modernity as such, and with it an inability to theorize Islam's historical resonances and complicities with capital and the international state system. Yet this is precisely what scholars need if we are to grasp Islam's capacities for renewal and revival in and beyond the current epoch.

It is known that al-Bāqillānī and his followers, especially in the western region, formed a different vein within Ashʿarism. Through the line of Abū
Bakr al-Bāqillānī (d. 403/1013), Abū Dharr al-Harawī (d. 434/1043), Abū
Ja‘far al-Simnānī (d. 444/1052), and Abū al-Walīd al-Bājī (d. 474/1081), it
is determined that early western Ashʿarism exhibited a different attitude
compared to the eastern Ashʿarites. Considering the fact that sects can be divided into different schools/groups within themselves, the focus is on the way and method of portraying other sects by the approach centred on al-Bāqillānī, who is distant from philosophy and has a more inclusive view of Ahl al-Sunnah. This study, which aims to portray the view of these
names towards sects other than Mu‘tazila and Shī‘a, takes into account the views of these scholars on Ahl al-Sunna and, their evaluations of sects
such as the Khawārij, Murji’ah, and Baqriyya. Having centred on al-
Bāqillānī and al-Simnānī, it is possible to say that the study aims to reveal the perception of the 5th/11th century western Ash‘arite perception of sects such as Khawārij, Murji’ah, Jahmiyya/Jabriyya, and Baqriyya by
using the method of social historiography by focusing on the effects of geography and time. Despite the difference in the intensity of the coverage of other sects between al-Bāqillānī and al-Simnānī and their different opinions on some issues, it has been concluded that there is a great deal of similarity between the two names in their determinations regarding other sects.

XVIII. ve XIX. asırlar Osmanlı toplumu için pek çok fikrî ve siyasî buhranın yaşandığı çalkantılı bir dönemdir. Hiç kuşkusuz bunların en önemlilerinden biri Vehhâbî hareketin ortaya çıkmasıdır. Vehhâbîlik ortaya çıktığı andan günümüze kadar İslam dünyasında önemli yankılar uyandırmış bir harekettir. Tevhidi bütün yönleriyle hâkim kılma söylemi ile yola çıkan bir topluluğun Müslümanlar için kutsal kabul edilen değerleri ve mekanları hedef alması İslam ulemasının tepkisini beraberinde getirmiştir. Kolektif bir bilincin ürünü olan bu tepkiler sonucunda Vehhâbîlik Reddiyeleri olarak ifade edebileceğimiz hatırı sayılır bir literatür ortaya çıkmıştır. Vehhâbîlik Reddiyeleri Muhammed b. Abdülvehhâb’ın görüşlerini ortaya koyduğu ilk andan günümüze dek yazılmaya devam etmiştir. Mezhep aidiyetlerinden bağımsız olarak Vehhâbî görüşleri eleştiren/reddeden pek çok âlim tarafından kimisi küçük bir risale, kimisi de hacimli bir eser hüviyetinde pek çok reddiye kaleme alınmıştır. Reddiye yazan âlimlerin öncelikli hedefleri dinî ve kültürel değerlerin korunması ile halkın bilinçlendirilmesi olmuştur. Hanefî-muhaddis kimliği ile bilinen Muhammed et-Trabzonî el-Medenî’nin (ö. 1200-1786) Sârimü’l-Vâridât fî’r-Reddi alâ Ehli Hevâ adlı risalesi de Muhammed b. Abdülvehhâb’ın görüşlerine karşı Hanefî bir âlim tarafından erken dönemde yazılmış reddiyelerden bir tanesidir. Muhammed et-Trabzonî el-Medenî’nin eseri dönemin toplumsal hafızasına ışık tutması ve gerek halkın gerekse ulemanın zihinlerini meşgul eden tartışma konularını ortaya koyması bakımından önem arz etmektedir. Zira bu konular Muhammed et-Trabzonî’nin yaşadığı yüzyılın bir öncesinde ve bir sonrasında İslam dünyasında tartışılagelip toplumsal kutuplaşmanın ana ekseninde yer almıştır. Öyle ki söz konusu edilen mevzular XVI ve XVII. yüzyıl Osmanlı toplumunda Kadızadelî-Sivasî çekişmesinin parçası XVIII ve XIX. yüzyıllarda ise Vehhâbîler ile Ehl-i Sünnet uleması arasındaki tartışmaların içeriğini oluşturmuştur. Bu itibarla makalede Muhammed et-Trabzonî el-Medenî’nin reddiyesinin metinsel analizi yapılarak, Vehhâbîlik Reddiyeleri arasındaki konumu ve önemi irdelenmiştir. Reddiye mecmuasının içerisinde yer alan konuyla ilgili diğer risalelerin de analizi yapılmış, makale söz konusu çalışmalarla sınırlandırılmıştır. Bununla beraber makalede metinler ve şahıslar üzerinde derinleşme yöntemi kullanılarak Muhammed et-Trabzonî’nin Vehhâbilik ile ilgili yaklaşımlarına ve reddiye verdiği konulara ulaşılmıştır. Diğer yandan söz konusu reddiye mecmuasının Kadızâdeli ulemaya hitaben yazılmadığının, Vehhâbîliği doğrudan hedef aldığının tespit edilmesi ise makalenin diğer kazanımı olmuştur.

Islamic heresiography has a long history whose roots go back to the second century of Hegira. The development process, which started with individual articles (maqālah), continued with encyclopedic works. As far as we know, the alphabetical classification of firqahs is the first attempt at Islamic heresiography. This classification, which was written by Muṣṭafá ibn Ibrāhīm in the late period of the Ottomans and reached the present day as a single copy, is remarkable in terms of both the author's environment and the subjects it contains. This article suggests that the author lived in the 18 th century and belonged to the Qāḍīzādelī environment. First, the identification of the author is clarified, and then the content of the heresiographical treatise is analyzed. Finally, the Arabic version of the text with the developed text structure is presented as an appendix.

Josef van Ess’s latest work is a monumental study of the Islamic heresiographic tradition in Arabic and in Persian literatures. In the style of his colossal history of early Islamic theology, the six-volume Theologie und Gesellschaft (Berlin & New York: Walter de Gruyter, 1991-1997), van Ess surveys in this book writings about religious divi-sions within Islam. We have come to call these works heresiographies, although that word, which has its origins in Christian literature, does not fully apply. There are not in Islam heresies like there are in Christianity. Where there is no center of orthodoxy there can be no heresies, van Ess argues, and in Islam orthodoxy has always been in the eye of the beholder, meaning the author of whatever heresiography one is looking at (II, 1298-1308).

Abdulkader Tayob in his Religion in Modern Islamic Discourse undertook a careful study of how ‘religion,’ as a key variable in ‘religious studies’ in general and ‘Islamic studies’ in particular, has been employed and discussed by Muslim intellectuals at the end of the 19th century and throughout the 20th century. Tayob discussed engagingly about the status of ‘Religion in Modern Islam’ (pp. 1-22) and argued about its relevance as a distinctive variable; and like many other social scientists he made reference to how and why scholars such as Max Weber defined/explained religion in modern society. Instead of depending upon their interpretations, Tayob brought Wilfred Cantwell Smith and Armando Salvatore’s ideas on board; for him they offered useful insights as to how it should be applied to present-day Muslim societies. Since their respective understandings were appropriate, Tayob employed their theoretical conceptualization throughout his study

At first sight, what could be more foreign to Islam than the doctrine of metempsychosis? Designated by various terms (tanāsukh, naskh, burūz, intiqāl, maskh), it appears in Islamic literature to be exposed and refuted as an intellectual error and/or a religious fault. According to the consensus of theologians (both Sunni and Shiʿ), it is contrary to Islam in that it contradicts Qur’anic eschatology, resurrection, the Last Judgment, and the retribution of deeds in the afterlife, in Paradise or Hell. However, we are faced with a paradox: this doctrine, which seems to be unanimously rejected, returns constantly like a haunting spectre in theological and heresiographical works; its designation as a “blamable innovation” (bidʿa) and its attribution to “misguided” sects of Islam suggest we are dealing with a “heresy”, that is to say an unacceptable difference within religion. The importance that the rejection of metempsychosis seems to bear in the formation of the great Islamic orthodoxies thus raises a series of questions: if this doctrine is fundamentally foreign to Islam, why return constantly to its refutation and condemnation? Does the “party of metempsychosis” denote a social and historical reality or is it a mere theoretical scarecrow? Do we find texts of Muslim authors or currents supporting such a doctrine and if so, at what times and in what contexts? In short, could metempsychosis belong to the religious, intellectual and spiritual culture of Islam?
In the classical period (3rd/9th-7th/13th centuries), metempsychosis was known to Muslim scholars as a characteristic of non-Islamic religions and traditions. In his famous book on India, al-Bīrūnī (d. 440/1048) treats it as a doctrine peculiar to Hinduism. It is also attributed to ancient Greek philosophers whose teachings had passed into the intellectual world of Islam, such as the Pythagoreans; al-Bīrūnī ascribed it to Socrates by quoting Plato’s Phaedo, while (pseudo-) al-Fārābī attempted to exonerate Plato by arguing for a metaphorical interpretation of the myth of Er in the Republic. The Hellenistic philosophers will thus have to defend their masters, and sometimes themselves, against the suspicion of transmigrationism.
But the doctrine of metempsychosis seems to have also have been adopted by certain Islamic currents (firaq) of the 2nd/8th and 3rd/9th centuries, notably certain Shiʿi sects designated under the generic term ghulāt or ghāliya (“exaggerators”), which hold a prominent place in major heresiographical treatises such as al-Shahrastānī’s Kitāb al-Milal wa-l-niḥal. Beyond the groups mentioned in these sources – whose historical reality is debatable, at least as it is described –, the doctrine of metempsychosis does seem to have been perpetuated, in various forms and to varying degrees, within a wide range of Islamic currents considered by their opponents to be heterodox, even heretical (Nuṣayrism, Ismailism, Druzism, Bektashism, etc.). In Twelver Shi'ism as it fixatedfrom the 4th/10th century onwards, theologians dissociate themselves from this “exaggerating belief” (ghuluww) and its supporters. This theme nonetheless survives in a sparse and allusive manner in the body of traditions attributed to the Imāms. Reincarnation or animal metamorphosis (maskh), which Qur'anic verses (2:65, 5:60) seem to promise to the Jews, is thus associated with a divine punishment reserved for opponents of the Prophet and the Imāms.
A double phenomenon emerges here: on the one hand, it seems that the construction of Islamic orthodoxies (whether Sunni or Shiʿi) has largely used metempsychosis as a deterrent. Considered heretical, even irreligious, and in contradiction with the foundations of Islam, this doctrine became an extremely strong cultural and intellectual marker in the Islamic world, making it possible to distinguish good doctrine from sectarian wanderings. In other words, a large part of Islam was defined in part against the possibility of transmigration of souls. This has contributed to orienting the vision carried by later societies (modern and contemporary), but also by Orientalists and scholars specializing in the study of Islam, on the communities and thinkers who adopted and theorized the doctrine of metempsychosis, to the point of considering them as outside Islam.
On the other hand, the persistence of transmigrationist beliefs under various forms in several Islamic groups testifies to a resistance to the ideological hegemony of the majority currents. This is a matter for questioning the modalities – esoteric or exoteric – of the expression of this doctrine as well as the reasons – social, cultural and/or intellectual – for such “obstinacy” in a hostile context, when it would surely have been easier to give it up. One can also wonder about what the proponents of metempsychosis within Islam would risk as such, not only from the point of view of theological-legal theory, but also and above all on the practical political level.
Even after the formation of the orthodoxies and the stabilization of the minority currents in the margins of the global Islamic society, the notion of metempsychosis, expressed in different terms, continued to be discussed and interpreted by a great number of Muslim philosophers, either to refute it substantially or, more unexpectedly, to support it with subtle nuances. In the philosophy and speculative Sufism, particularly in the school of Ibn ʿArabī, the refutation of metempsychosis thus recurs as a leitmotif in the elaboration of the “correct” doctrine of the soul and its relation to the body. Thus Avicenna makes the refutation of metempsychosis an essential chapter of his theory of the soul (psychology) to demonstrate the temporal advent (ḥudūth) of the soul and its exclusive relationship to its body, thus seemingly conforming to the doctrine commonly accepted in Islam. This refutation, handed down by Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī (d. 672/1274), became a commonplace in Imāmite rational theology. Several authors, however, adopt certain theories of metempsychosis, either openly or allusively: let us mention Jābir b. Ḥayyān (2nd/8th-3rd/9th c.), the Ikhwān al-Ṣafāʾ (3rd/9th-4th/10th c.), Abū Bakr b. Zakariyyā al-Rāzī (d. 311/923 or 320/932), Abū Ya'qūb al-Sijistānī (d. after 361/971), Shihāb al-Dīn Yaḥyā Suhrawardī (d. 587/1191), Shams al-Dīn al-Shahrazūrī (d. ca. 699/1300), Ibn Abī Jumhūr al-Aḥsā'ī (d. after 904/1499 or 906/1501). Finally, among later thinkers such as Shaykh Lāhījī (d. 912/1506-7) (of the Shi'itized Sufi brotherhood of the Nūrbakhshiyya), Shaykh Bahā'ī (d. 1030/1621) and Mullā Ṣadrā (d. 1045/1636), the refutation of metempsychosis in the primary (pseudo-Hindu) sense allows for original conceptions of the powers of the soul and resurrection while defending against the charge of heresy. Thus, it is as if once the major doctrinal currents were established, philosophy took over from the speculations of the so-called “heterodox” groups and became the privileged place for a discussion of metempsychosis in Islam. But it seems that beyond the dialectic of orthodoxy and heterodoxy, this question is of philosophical interest to many thinkers in Islam.
The objective of this international project is to fill a gap in Islamic studies by proposing a historical, philological and philosophical examination of the doctrines of metempsychosis in all the cultural, social and intellectual diversity (theological, philosophical, mystical...) of Islam. Participants are invited to take part in one or more of the following angles of analysis:
Doctrines, definitions and refutations. Describe, from the founding texts, the elaboration of the doctrine of metempsychosis within certain Muslim communities and/or by scholars (theologians, philosophers...). The confrontation of the different doctrines, definitions and refutations of the notion of metempsychosis will make it possible to highlight the plurality of the doctrine in the medieval and modern Muslim world, as well as the divergences and common influences.
Orthodoxies and heterodoxies. Study the discussions around metempsychosis from the perspective of the construction of orthodoxies and heterodoxies, that is, doctrines that are either consecrated as official Islam or stigmatized as foreign or impious. We will question the ideological biases, the accusatory or defensive strategies and their stakes, the influence of which we will be able to follow in scholarly studies. The historical reality of groups stigmatized as transmigrationists can also be questioned.
Social and cultural dimensions. To question the causes of the adoption and establishment, within a community or a school of thought, of a transmigrationist doctrine in a given form. What are the contextual (social, communal and religious) particularities of this presence? Can the goal of representing an esoteric minority community as the elite of the Muslim world justify the adoption of this doctrine? Or is it a matter of cultural heritage and local beliefs, or a purely spiritual choice? 
Interactions and parallels. To examine the question of the Islamic appropriation of doctrines of metempsychosis from previous or external religions and schools of thought. On the one hand, the influence of ancient knowledge, especially Hellenistic, can be observed through teachings translated, enriched or transformed by scholars who served as knowledge transmitters. On the other hand, attention will be given to the traditions and communities of contact (Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism...) that interacted with Islamic thought, based on exchanges between the elites or communities of both sides.

This paper explores the approach to the issue of religious tolerance in the transcultural environment of Oman through statements and positions of the current religious leader of the Ibāḍīs, the Muftī Sheikh Aḥmad al-Khalīlī. The result shows his interaction with other religions and his ideas in relation to the modernisation developments of the nation state of Oman. His theological roots and most preferred religious predecessors are included and reactions from supporters and opponents of his model in relation to his statements and actions are discussed.

The history of Islamic thought are embroidered on to the doctrines of Islam is of sufficient interest to the general student of the world's intellectual effort to authorise the attempt to do for al-Baghdadi what has already been done for Ibn Hazm al-Qurtubi and al-Sharastani and to render his work accessible  those who cannot read the Arabic original.

O, hicrî IV. asırdaki hem akla hem de nakle dayanan bütün ilimlerin geliştiği ve olgunlaştığı bir dönemde yaşamıştır. Arap dili ve edebiyatı açısından önemli olan Ebû Hâtim'in yaşadığı bu dönemdeki dilsel çalışmalar, aynı zamanda felsefî bir içerik kazanmıştır. Çalışmada Ebû Hâtim'in hayatı ve eserlerinden bahsedilmiştir. Onun bilimsel kişiliği ve siyasî mezhebi hakkındaki görüşler de zikredilmiştir. This paper examines recent deployments of Wittgenstein’s thought, by Mustafa (2018) and Asad (2020), in defense of the Islamic “traditionalism” of Ibn Taymiyyah and the Hanbali school. I will briefly summarize the key features of Wittgenstein’s thought crucial to this, and then examine their ramifications. I argue that Wittgenstein’s position actually undermines any claim to interpretive authority, whether of the “rationalist” or salafi “traditionalist” sort. Secondly, the approach to religious language most commonly associated with Wittgenstein—so-called “Wittgensteinian Fideism” may pose bigger problems for traditionalists than the influence of classical philosophy or “rationalist” theological responses to modern skeptical challenges.

If modernity is ambiguous, the relationship of Islam to modernity is still more ambiguous. This essay reviews the scope of change that has occurred in the Muslim world since the onset of the Age of Globalization. Marshall Hodgson coined the phrase 'the Great Western Transmutation', decentering the West and accenting the cluster of traits that make moderns modern wherever they are. Hodgson's analysis is amplified by current Muslim voices, such as Ziauddin Sardar, Chandra Muzaffar, Omid Safi, and Ebrahim Moosa. The premise, as also the outcome, of this essay is to project modern day Muslims as global citizens who can, and do, promote innovation, openness and pluralism as legitimate, natural dimensions of Islamic loyalty. Globalization, like modernity, becomes not the enemy of Islam but its ally.

Abu Shakur al-Salimi is a theologian of Hanafi-Maturidi from Samarkand, who lived in the second half of the 5th hegira era and known for his works called al-Tamhid fi Bayan al-Tawhid and Kitab al-Miraj. In his book Kitab al-Miraj, which we haven't reached yet, but we have information about its content, al-Salimi discussed the miraj and the wisdom of the miraj. In his work al-Tamhid, which has come until today, al-Salimi includes Islamic sects in terms of being right and bidat in addition to the subjects related to Kalam, he also evaluated non-Islamic religions in terms of blasphemy and shirk. Al-Salimi considers the concept of sevad-i azam, which is based on the creation of the vast majority of rights, and has met with the Ahl al-Sunnah and sevad-i azam. Al-Salimi, who accepts being right as creating the vast majority, has sensitively focused on the concept of sevad-i-azam, and has accepted sevad-i-azam with Ahl al-Sunnah as the one. Although it was determined that he had benefited greatly from Maturidi, he did not mention Maturidi explicitly, and used his Hanafi upper identity basing on his ideas to Abu Hanifa and his students. He clearly regarded the Ash'ariyye, one of the branches of the Ahl al-Sunnah, as a opponent. The method of classifying sects confirms the Hanafi-Maturidi tradition, which he is a follower, reflecting the eastern Hanafi tradition. In addition, it is the first of the well-known sources in terms of constructing the names of six bidat sects that are attributed to Abu Hanifa and the evaluation of non-Islamic religions after sects. It was determined that the mentioned style affected some scholars who came after him. He emphasized the opinions of the sects that considered as bidat and the non-Islamic religions that caused as shirk or blasphemy.

Abu Nu‛aym al-Iṣfahānī (d. 430/1038), a celebrated scholar and author of many works, famed for his Ḥilya, and mostly remembered as a Sufi advocate, historiographer, and hadith traditionist. Despite his renowned reputation, one struggles to find much research concerning his life and works. Classical Arabic literature presents some information about him in scattered short biographical entries. Modern scholarship has even less to offer in this regard. None of the existent sources presents a biography that delivers a precise examination of Abu Nu‛aym's life, journeys, teachers, students and works, all in one place. This paper is a sequel to my previously published piece entitled "Abu Nu‛aym al-Iṣfahānī (d. 430/1038): Conflicting Opinions" which evaluates the opinions of Abu Nu‛aym's supporters and critics. Published by "Teosofia" in December 2021, the article examines the praise Abu Nu‛aym had received from his proponents as well as the criticism from his opponents. In this current paper the focus is on Abu Nu‛aym's professional life. It includes lists of all his teachers, students, and works, along a detailed presentation of which of Abu Nu‛aym's works have been published, which survived in only manuscript form and which are considered lost. This paper is meant to complement the previous one and together present a concise biography that treats all the details of Abu Nu‛aym's life. This paper is the result of many years of search for information about Abu Nu‛aym in primarily classical sources, but also modern literature, as well manuscript and library catalogues for details on the available manuscript copies and printed editions of his works.

Ebu Hanife'nin Osman el-Batti'ye gonderdigi rivayet edilen bu ikinci risale ise, zikredildigi uzere, birincisi gibi arastirmalarda pek dikkat cekmemistir. O, su ana kadar basilmis olmayip, el yazmasi olarak da dikkate alinmamistir.1 Bu risale, kisa sure once Van Ess'in ilk donem Islam Kelam Tarihi'ne dair yazdigi eserdeki bir tanitimi ve ona dair ilk analizi gerceklestirmesiyle bir belge olarak ilgi gormustur.2 Ancak Van Ess bu baglamda bu ikinci risalenin guvenilirlik derecesinin birinciye nazaran oldukca dusuk olduguna isaret etmistir. Muellif hakkindaki acik ve net degerlendirmelere sahip olmadigimizdan risalenin bu haliyle gercekten Ebu Hanife'ye ait olup olmadigi konusundaki tartisma sonucsuz kalmaktadir.

Arap anlambilimi alanında çalışmalar yapan Ebû Hâtim Ahmed b. Hamdân er-Râzî (ö. 322/934), meşhur Arap dilbilimcilerinden birisi olarak bilinir. O, hicrî IV. asırdaki hem akla hem de nakle dayanan bütün ilimlerin geliştiği ve olgunlaştığı bir dönemde yaşamıştır. Arap dili ve edebiyatı açısından önemli olan Ebû Hâtim'in yaşadığı bu dönemdeki dilsel çalışmalar, aynı zamanda felsefî bir içerik kazanmıştır. Çalışmada Ebû Hâtim'in hayatı ve eserlerinden bahsedilmiştir. Onun bilimsel kişiliği ve siyasî mezhebi hakkındaki görüşler de zikredilmiştir. O, İsmâiliyye mezhebi hakkında bazı bilgilere yer verilmiştir. Ayrıca müellifin yaşadığı dönemin siyasi ve sosyo-kültürel çevresi hakkındaki bilgilere de değinilmiştir. Böylece bu çalışma, günümüz araştırmacılarına ışık tutacak bu değerli dilbilimcinin tanınmasına vesile olacaktır.

Orientalists such as Schacht claimed, without sound evidence, that Islamic legal writings as a whole represent politics. Others such as Humphreys followed their lead and looked almost obsessively for any divergences across classical writings in various disciplines including Islamic law with an eye to taking the changes in the narrative structure across classical writings as an indication of an allegedly surreptitious political agenda of classical Muslim scholars. Is Islamic legal literature really a manifestation of politics? In an effort to provide an answer to this question against this background, this paper deals with the narrative change seen in the scope of application of istitāba between the 8th and the 11th century legal writings of al-Šāfiʿī and al-Ghazālī on istitāba, a legal institution that refers to calling on an apostate (murtadd) to repent in cases of apostasy (irtidāt). It particularly examines the alleged impact which the narrative change across classical jurists' writings on the notion of istitāba had upon the formation of Sunnism as purported by some. In fact, some Western scholars claim that in the 11th century al-Ghazālī deviated from the norm set in the 8th century by al-Šāfiʿī when the former limited the scope of istitāba only to common people, removing that right from dāʿīs (the propagandists), an apparent divergence which was then linked to another earlier apparent divergence between al-Baghdādī and al-Ašʿarī. Looking at these divergences, they argue that al-Baghdādī and al-Ghazālī served as state apparatuses to protect the Sunnī identity of the Seljukid state against her enemies, a claim which has been skillfully used to make it appear that contemporary intolerant applications of the institution of istitāba is rooted in Islamic law and the "Sunni orthodoxy." Providing a close comparative reading of the relevant classical works by al-Ašʿarī and al-Baghdādī as well as al-Šāfiʿī and al-Ghazālī along with others such as Abū Yūsuf and al-Sarakhsī, this work argues that such divergences are more apparent than real, while also showing that these Western scholars have done much disingenuity to make it appear the otherwise, in an effort to form a myth about Islamic law and Sunnism. This seems to represent, this paper further argues, what seems to be quite a common tendency among some western scholars to link narrative changes across classical sources to politics especially when it serves to compromise the strength of unity of practice and belief of the people of Turkish Republic. Finally, on the basis of the analysis on istitāba and relevant matters, this paper rebuts the idea that Islamic law is a manifestation of politics.

Schacht gibi oryantalistler, sağlam delillere dayanmaksızın, İslam hukuk metinlerinin, siyasetin bir tezâhürü olduğunu iddia ettiler. Klasik eserlerdeki anlatı değişimlerinin, alimlerin sözümona gizli siyasi ajandalarının bir tezâhürü olduğunu ispat etmek amacıyla, Humphreys gibileri ise, önceki oryantalistleri takip ederek, neredeyse takıntılı bir şekilde İslam hukuku dahil farklı disiplinlerde yazılmış klasik eserlerin anlatılarında değişiklikler bulmaya koyuldular. İslam hukuk literatürü gerçekten siyasetin bir tezâhürü müdür? İşte bu tarihi arkaplan içerisinde bu soruya cevap bulmaya çalışan bu makale, irtidāt (dinden çıkma) durumlarında, mürtedi tövbeye davet etme anlamına gelen istitâbenin uygulama kapsamına dair 8.yy. ile 11.yy.’larda yaşamış olan Şâfiʿî ve Gazâlî tarafından yazılan fıkıh metinlerinde görülen anlatı değişimini konu edinmektedir. Bu çalışma, Bağdâdî ile Eşʿarî ve Şâfiʿî ile Gazâlî’ye ek olarak, Ebû Yûsuf ve Serahsî gibi alimlerin de eserlerini karşılaştırmalı olarak incelemek suretiyle, bu sapmaların yüzeysel olduğunu iddia etmektedir. Maqālāt and fıraq type works have an important place among the sources of the History of Islamic Sects. One of the most important features of these works is that they are shaped according to the sect or mentality. Among these, the works written by the authors belonging to the line of Ashāb al-Hadith have been called a Maqālāt tradition as they contain some unique features. One of the most important features of the Maqālāt authors in this tradition is the fact that they bring the hadith "73 sects", which is claimed to belong to the Prophet, to the fore in their work classification. The hadith is mentioned, which has many versions in terms of both its content and its authenticity has been used in the context of sect classification by many Maqālāt authors belonging to various sects. In our study aimed to evaluate the epistle attributed to Abū al-Qāsim Abd al-Wāhid b. Ahmad al-Kirmānī who belongs to the line of Ashāb al-Hadith views the sects according to the hadith "73 sects", from various aspects such as form, style, and content. Information about al-Kirmānī’s life and works is very limited. It is estimated that he lived in Hamadan, Iran, before 525 AH. One of the important points here is that al-Kirmānī lived after two important heresiography authors, Abu al-Hasen al-Ash'ari (d. 324/935-36) and Abu al-Huseyn Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Malatī (d. 377/987). When the epistle attributed to the author is examined, it is possible to see that he was significantly influenced by Ash'ari, and most of the information he gave overlaps with the information in Ash'ari's Maqālāt. As far as we can determine, there are three publications of al-Kirmānī’s epistle, which we have discussed in our study: Sven Dedering, Iranian researcher Mohammad Taki Dānishpejuh (1911-1996), and Ahmad Farid al-Mezīdī. When the studies are examined, it has been determined that the manuscript copy of the text, which is the source of all three publications, is Sulaimaniya Library Ragıp Pasha No. 1463 in Istanbul between 66a-69a. The fact that the reference to alKirmānī is written in red at the top of the text and that this information is not supported by other sources suggests that the epistle may have been attributed to al-Kirmānī by the scribe. As a matter of fact, apart from this copy, we have identified another manuscript copy of the epistle. Afterwards, we discussed the classification system of the epistle and made comparative evaluations with the works of the previous and subsequent periods. In addition to this, we have mentioned the method and content of the epistle in detail and added its Turkish translation and manuscript versions at the end of the text.

وقد تابَعَت هذه الورقة البحثية بعد ذلك الانتقال من المذهبية إلى التمذهب، والذي قد يعني في صورة منه التعصب والتقوقع حول الفكر الواحد باعتباره الدين الحق وما عداه هو الباطل، أو بمعنى آخر حدوث العودة للوراء من المذهب إلى الدين لشدة ارتباط  كل منهما بالآخر ضمن تصورات الأتباع.

This is a beautifully written and judiciously argued book on how Muslims have historically negotiated identity and difference (or in the author's words: 'a genealogy of Muslim difference-a narrative of how Muslims have defined the line between themselves and others' [p. 4]). Youshaa Patel traces the interpretive history of the hadith, 'Whoever imitates a people becomes one of them', across fourteen centuries of conversation among traditionists, Sufis, and jurists. His aim is to demonstrate that Muslims have understood and embodied identity in different styles that reflect a profound understanding of 'imitation' (tashabbuh), especially on the part of the learned elite (ulema). I highlight below some key aspects of this book: its astute argument, its creative use of sources, and its nimble attention to questions of materiality and historical context. I shall also discuss the epilogue wherein Patel departs from his descriptive-analytical voice to offer some constructive advice to contemporary Muslims, especially his coreligionists in the United States. Finally, I wish to register my 'small difference' from Patel's argument and approach, particularly concerning his deployment of a mixture of psychoanalysis and ego psychology. But before all this, a summary of this rich volume is in order.

al-Jama'ahthe Community of Tradition and Congregation) is a concept which the present powerful and sovereign group invented and employed to validate their presence, to support, to justify, namely to legitimatize their religious, social and political reality. So, from 73 sect stated in a hadith does it come out that the Community of Tradition and Congregation, the Saved Sect (Firqatun-Najiyah) was created or produced as an instrument of legitimacy. This study tries to investigate the meaning contents of production of the Ahl as-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah as an instrument of legitimacy from the social, political and cultural viewpoint. In the study, the matter is considered in its sociological dimensions and an understanding approach, and with determinations, descriptions and interpretations. GİRİŞ "Ehlu's-Sunne ve'l-Cemâ'a" kavramsallaştırmasının siyasal, itikâdî, tarihsel, sosyal ve kültürel temelleri bilinmektedir. The Salimiyya, ascetics and non-Sufi mystical theologians of Basra active in the third and fourth Hijri centuries, left contradictory traces in Muslim biographical, mystical, and polemical literature. Most sources quoting those who were identified as "Salimiyya" characterize them as mystics at one with the emerging Sufi tradition. One key Hanbali text, al-Mu‘tamad fi usul al-din of Ibn al-Farra’ (d. 458 AH/1066 CE), preserves a polemic against the Salimiyya and refutes eighteen theses attributed to them. Contemporary scholarship has not given a satisfactory explanation of Ibn al-Farra’s refutation of the Salimiyya, treating it as a theological controversy while ignoring the political dimension that is always present in polemics. This paper argues that Ibn al-Farra’ uses the Salimiyya theses to indirectly criticize his rationalist and esotericist opponents and to deflect the charge of anthropomorphism away from the Hanbali school of theology. The Salimiyya serve as a “pseudo-Other” in the manner that Gnostic Christians were of rhetorical use to emergent Orthodox Christianity in late antiquity.

Bu çalışma İmam Mâturîdî'nin Fikirlerinde Ebû Hanîfe'nin Etkisi adlı Metin Avcı'nın doktora tezinden kitaplaştırılan eseri konu edinmektedir. Avcı, Ebû Hanîfe ve Mâtürîdî'nin tevhid ve ulûhiyet, imanın mahiyeti, iman amel ilişkisi, büyük günah işleyen kişinin durumu, nübüvvet ve âhiret ve son olarak da kader ve kulların fiilleri gibi meselelerde görüşlerini ele almıştır. Avcı, Ebû Hanîfe'nin Mâtürîdî'nin fikirlerinin oluşmasında bir temel teşkil ettiğini ve Mâtürîdî'nin Ebû Hanîfe'nin görüşlerini detaylandırıp geliştirdiğini savunur.

The Abbasid period lasted for several centuries and was centered in Baghdad. It witnessed the flowering of Islamic civilization. Arabic culture, the arts, and knowledge were much promoted. The peak of Abbasid glory occurred under Caliph Harun al-Rashid (786-809) and his son Al-Ma’moon (813-833). During this period Baghdad was a magnificent urban center.
The history and details of recent conflicts and the birth of the State of Israel are described in Chapter 9. We are given a concise account of the tortuous history of the period between 1948 and the beginning of the Third Millennium. At the conclusion of Parts 1 & 2, the authors comment:

Günümüz Nijerya topraklarında 19. yüzyılda yetişmiş önemli bir ıslahatçı, davetçi
ve sûfî olan Osman b. Fûdî’nin (öl. 1232/1817) öne çıkan yönü, kendi döneminde
ortaya çıkan bid´atlara karşı verdiği mücadelesi olmuştur. Bu mücadele kapsamında kaleme aldığı İhyâu’s-Sunne ve ihmâdu’l-bid´a adlı eseri ile Sünnet çizgisinden
uzaklaştığını düşündüğü topluma karşı, ilim ehli olarak vazifesini yerine getirmeye
çalışmıştır. Bu çalışmada müellifin eserinin kısmen de olsa tenkitli takdimi yapılmıştır. Müellifin konu çerçevesinde oluşmuş literatüre hâkim olduğu ve eserde sıklıkla

kalmamıştır. Bu açıdan eserde kimi zaman çelişkili durumlar söz konusu olmuştur.
Müellif, dini bir motif giymiş kimi uygulamaların İslam toplumu için uzun vadede
ne tür zararlı sonuçlar doğurabileceğine dair değerlendirmelerde bulunmuştur. Çalışmada bu kabilden yorumlar üzerinde özellikle durulmuş ve eserin günümüz İslam
toplumlarına verebileceği bid´at karşıtı duruş bilinci berraklaştırılmaya çalışılmıştır.

Ut̲h̲mān b. Fūdī an important reformer, preacher and sūfī who grew up in the territory of present-day Nigeria in the 18th century. Fūdī’s prominent aspect was his
struggle against the innovations that emerged in his time. With his work Ihyā al-Sunna
and Ihmād al-bidaʿ which he wrote within the scope of this struggle, he tried to fulfill
his duty as a scholar towards the society that he thought of them had moved away
from the prophet’s sunna. In this study, a critical presentation of the author’s work
has been made, at least partially. It has been seen that the author has mastered the
literature formed within the framework of the subject and references to previous
studies are often made in the work. In the foreword, he emphasized that the decision maker and the intervening authority on whether a religious practice is a bidʿa
should be scholars, not the common people. He was afraid that the struggle with
bidʿas would cause a social turmoil. He warned that the labeling of bidʿa should
be avoided in controversial matters, but in the later stages of the work, he did not
hesitate to consider makrūh bidʿa on many controversial issues. From this point of
view, there were sometimes contradictory situations in the work. The author has
made evaluations about what kind of harmful consequences some practices dressed
in a religious motif may have for the Islamic society in the long run. In the study,
such interpretations were especially emphasized and the awareness of the anti-bidʿa
stance that the work could give to today’s Islamic societies was tried to be clarified

Abū ʿAlī al-Jubbāʾī (d. 303/915-16) was a theologian and early leader of the Basran school of the Muʿtazila. His doxography, the Kitāb al-Maqālāt, is the only surviving work attributed to him.  Unlike many other doxographies, al-Jubbāʾī’s work aims not only to describe the beliefs of various sects, but to refute the opponents of his own school. Moreover, the work is highly polemical in tone, as the theologian repeatedly subjects the opposing groups to harsh invective. Yet, what is most notable about the work is that al-Jubbāʾī’s refutations of the early Sunnis traditionalists—whom he designates as “Murjiʿa” and “Ḥashawiyya”—are, as I will show, primarily scriptural and textual rather than rationalistic. He repeatedly accuses them of opposing the plain text of the Qur’an on the basis of hadiths and exegetical reports, and thereby inverts the traditionalist accusation that it is the Muʿtazila who oppose the plain sense of scripture. Moreover, I will show that he usually employs a more strict and literalistic approach to the text of the Qur’an than the early Sunni traditionalists, one that allows for very little hermeneutical flexibility or tolerance for diversity of interpretation. In each of these ways, al-Jubbāʾī confutes the enduring stereotypes of the early Sunni traditionalists as the rigid, literalistic textualists and the Muʿtazila as the rationalists who prioritize their metaphysical postulates over the plain sense of scripture.

Özet Faysalu't-tefrika İmam Gazzâlî'nin (ö. 505/1111) mezhep taassubunun çok yoğun olduğu ve tekfîrin dışlayıcı bir silah olarak kullanıldığı bir dönemde tekfîre bir ölçü getirmek, daha doğrusu sınırlarını önemli ölçüde daraltmak üzere kaleme aldığı bir eserdir. Bu eserinde naslara dair yapılan te'villerin tekfîre konu olup olmadığını veyahut hangi durumlarda tekfîre başvurulabileceğini tartıştığı bir bağlamda kendisine kadar gelen süreçte çoğu zaman diğer grupları dışlamak, hatta tekfîr etmek ve hakikati yalnızca kendi grubuna inhisar etmek üzere kullanılan 73 fırka hadisine yeni bir yaklaşım getirmektedir. Gazzâlî burada hadisi daha önce örneği bulunmayan bir şekilde ele alır ve itikadi İslam fırkalarının birbirlerini tekfîr ederken temel aldıkları bir hadisin bu kullanıma müsait olmadığını ve kendi ifadesiyle 'Allah'ın geniş rahmetini daraltmadığı'nı ispatlamaya girişir. İşte bu makale Gazzâlî'nin söz konusu hadis karşısında ilmî noktada haklı eleştirilere maruz kalabileceği farklı yaklaşımını, arkasındaki muhtemel saikleri ve hadis vesilesiyle çizdiği çerçeveyi tartışarak tahlil etmeye çalışmakta ve bu yaklaşımının kendisinden sonraki döneme tesirinin olup olmadığını sorgulamaktadır.

Belirli olaylara bağlı olarak ortaya çıkan muhtelif itikadî görüşler, siyasî-itikadî fırkalaşmaların teşekkülündeki belirgin unsurlar olmakla kalmayarak, söz konusu mezhebin üzerinde bir etiket halini almaktadır. Hâricîlik mezhebi söz konusu olduğunda akla gelen ilk çağrışım, tekfir olgusudur. Mezhepler hakkında diğer bir önemli nokta da, görüşlerin sabit halde kalmayıp, süreç içerisinde değişerek ve dönüşerek birtakım kırılmalar yaşamasıdır. Bu bağlamda mezhepler üzerine yapışmış ve etiket haline gelmiş genel ve yaygın algıdan arınarak ve süreç takibi yaparak bu görüşlerin analiz edilmesi, söz konusu mezheplerin ve bunları oluşturan görüşlerin sağlıklı bir şekilde anlaşılması adına kaçınılmaz bir gerekliliktir. Bilindiği üzere Hâricîlik, kökenleri Hz. Osman dönemine dayanmakla birlikte esas itibariyle Hz. Ali ile Muâviye ve taraftarları arasında vuku bulan Sıffîn savaşı esnasında tahkim olayıyla ortaya çıkan, tahkime razı olan Müslümanları tekfir ederek Hz. Ali’nin ordusundan ayrılan topluluğu ifade etmektedir. Tahkimi kabul etmesinden ötürü Hz. Ali’den ayrılan Hâricîler, Harûrâ’da birleşerek Abdullah b. Vehb er-Râsıbî’ye emir olarak biat etmişler, sonrasında ise Nehrevân’da Hz. Ali ve taraftarlarına karşı savaşmışlardır. Böylelikle kendileri dışındaki Müslümanlardan teberrî ederek ilk siyasî-itikadî fırkalaşmayı oluşturmuşlardır. İlerleyen süreçte ise Nâfî b. Ezrâk’ın, kendisiyle birlikte cihat etmek üzere hicret etmeyen -diğer Hâricîler dahil olmak üzere- herkesi kâfir ve müşrik olmakla itham etmesiyle Ezârika alt fırkası oluşmuş; buna karşın Nâfî’nin aşırı tavrına karşı çıkan Necde b. Âmir ve Abdullah b. İbâz gibi isimlerle beraber Hâricîliğin diğer alt fırkaları oluşmaya başlamıştır. Bu süreç, Hâricî iman anlayışının teorik zemine oturması ve tartışılması açısından da önemli olmakla birlikte, bizim esas odaklanacağımız husus, bu süreçten önce oluşan ilk Hâricîliğin, “büyük günah işleyenleri tekfir edenler” şeklinde bir genellemeciliğe tabi tutulması problemidir. Bu sorun, makâlât yazarlarının genel olarak mezhepleri sırf kelâmî boyutuyla ele almasından ve Hâricîliği tekfir üzerinden okurken konuya doğrudan iman-amel ilişkisi bağlamında yaklaşılmasından kaynaklanmaktadır. Halbuki ilk aşamada henüz bu konudaki tartışmaların başladığını söylemek mümkün değildir. Dolayısıyla ilk Hâricîlerin, diğer adıyla Muhakkime-i Ûlâ’nın tutumunu böyle bir bakış açısıyla değerlendirmek, anakronizme yol açmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Hâricîliği “büyük günah işleyenleri tekfir edenler” şeklinde resmeden yaygın etiketleştirici ithamın sorunlu oluşuna dikkat çekerek, ilk Hâricîlerin tekfirci tutumunu bu yaygın algıdan arınmış olarak değerlendirmeye tabi tutmaktır. Bu bağlamda diğer Hâricî alt fırkalardan önce teşekkül etmiş ilk Hâricîlerdeki tekfirin, büyük günah-tekfir ilişkisi ya da amel-iman ilişkisi gibi salt kelâmî tartışmalar üzerinden anlaşılması yerine, kendi tarihsel zemininde gerçekleşen olaylarla irtibat kurularak analiz edilmesine önem verilmiştir. Bu husus, Hâricîlikteki tekfir olgusunun tekdüze bir mahiyet arz etmekten ziyade, tarihsel süreçte evrilerek dönüşüme uğradığını göstermek bakımından önemlidir. Ayrıca bu çalışmada dikkat çekilen hususlar, Müslümanlar arasında ilk defa vuku bulan tekfir olgusunun anlaşılması açısından olduğu kadar, söz konusu gerilimlerin ve doğurduğu sonuçların doğru bir şekilde anlaşılıp yorumlanması adına da önemli ip uçları sunmaktadır. Bu noktadaki tespitlerimizden birisi, bu aşamadaki tekfirciliğin, doğrudan büyük günah meselesine dayanmadığı, aksine büyük ölçüde din-siyaset iç içeliğinden kaynaklı bir durum olduğu hususudur. Nitekim Muhakkime, bir taraftan “Müslümanların emîrine muhalefet” sebebiyle Muâviye ve taraftarlarını tekfir ederken, diğer taraftan, “Müslümanların kanını dökmeyi helal sayan” bu kesime karşı savaşmayı durdurması ve bunların hükmüne razı olması sebebiyle Hz. Ali ve taraftarlarını tekfir etmişlerdir. Dolayısıyla buradaki tekfirin büyük günah tartışmasından bağımsız, siyasî boyutu ağır basan bir olgu olduğu görülmektedir. Araştırmamızda dikkat çekilen diğer bir önemli tespit de, küfür kavramının içerdiği geniş anlam ağının yanı sıra, belirli şahısları küfürle itham eden bir tutumun Hâricîlerden önce de vaki olmasıdır. Bu iki husustan hareketle, ilk Hâricîlerdeki küfür ve tekfir ithamlarının mutlak manada bir irtidat manasında anlaşılmayabileceği ihtimali söz konusudur. Bu doğrultuda, küfür ve kâfirlik ithamları, kesinlik bulunmamakla beraber, “nimet küfrü” anlamında değerlendirilmeye müsaittir. Makalemizde makâlât ve milel-nihal türü eserlerin yanı sıra, tarih eserlerinden yararlanılarak, ilk Hâricîlerin tahkim olayına karşı tepkilerinin sebepleri ele alınmış, küfür ithamlarının bulunduğu rivayetler karşılaştırmalı olarak değerlendirmeye tabi tutulmuştur. İslâm mezhepleri Tarihi’nin yöntemi çerçevesinde yürütülen çalışmamız, fikirlerin hadiselerle irtibatı kurularak, fikirler üzerinde derinleşme ve süreç takibi gibi ilkelerle yürütülmüştür.

Eylül 2020 Cumartesi günü akşam vakitlerinde aramızdan ayrılan kıymetli Hocam Prof. Dr. Hasan Onat'ın ardından "ardından" kelimesini kullanarak bir şeyler yazmak çok ama çok üzücü. Ölüm, hepimiz için mukadder; nerede, ne zaman ve nasıl bizi bulacağını öngörebilmek mümkün değil, amenna! Ama hocamızın vefatı gerçekten ani oldu; geride bıraktığımız zaman diliminde de zihin ve gönül dünyamızda büyük bir boşluk oluşturdu. Vefatının bizlere bu kadar zor gelmesinin en büyük nedeni, yıllar boyunca hep şahit olduğumuz yaşama istenciydi. Yakından tanıyanların çok iyi bileceği ve "iyi olmamak için bahane aramıyorum" şeklinde sıklıkla söze döktüğü bu istenci, yıllar boyunca içinde taşıdı. Bu, bir hayatta kalma isteğinden çok fazlasıydı; daha çok, hayatı başta kendisi olmak üzere yetiştirdiği çok sayıda öğrenci, hitap ettiği/edebildiği insanlar aracılığıyla da anlamlandırabilmeye odaklanan varoluşsal bir kaygıydı.

Arap anlambilimi alanında çalışmalar yapan Ebû Hâtim Ahmed b. Hamdân er-Râzî (ö. 322/934), meşhur Arap dilbilimcilerinden birisi olarak bilinir. O, hicrî IV. asırdaki hem akla hem de nakle dayanan bütün ilimlerin geliştiği ve olgunlaştığı bir dönemde yaşamıştır. Arap dili ve edebiyatı açısından önemli olan Ebû Hâtim'in yaşadığı bu dönemdeki dilsel çalışmalar, aynı zamanda felsefî bir içerik kazanmıştır. Çalışmada Ebû Hâtim'in hayatı ve eserlerinden bahsedilmiştir. Onun bilimsel kişiliği ve siyasî mezhebi hakkındaki görüşler de zikredilmiştir. O, İsmâiliyye mezhebi hakkında bazı bilgilere yer verilmiştir. Ayrıca müellifin yaşadığı dönemin siyasi ve sosyo-kültürel çevresi hakkındaki bilgilere de değinilmiştir. This article reassesses the "Khārijite" rebellion of Muṭarrif b. al-Mughīra b. Shuʿba al-Thaqafī in 77/696-97 and recontextualizes it within a different "category" of revolt. Analyzing both the history and the historiography of this uprising, the article argues that Muṭarrif's rebellion is best understood not within a Khārijite framework, but rather as part of a series of revolts carried out by other Iraqi tribal notables (ashrāf) in the same period. This reevaluation is based, for example, on the composition of Muṭarrif's following, which shows clear connections with other important Iraqi/eastern leaders, such as Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr, Ibn al-Ashʿath, and Yazīd b. al-Muhallab. These connections, observable in other structural patterns common to Marwānid-era rebellions as well, point to a similarity of grievances, reactions, and aims whose salience far exceeded the context of individual revolts. More broadly, this article also seeks to challenge the received scholarly understanding of Khārijism and to question its usefulness as a category of historical analysis, suggesting instead different approaches to a renewed engagement with this phenomenon.

Müteahhir dönem İslâm düşüncesi Gazâlî sonrasıyla ilgili gerileme söylemi dolayısıyla uzunca bir süre ihmal edilmiş olsa bile, söz konusu dönemle ilgili çalışmalar yakın zamanda nispi bir artış göstermiştir. Bununla birlikte Gazâlî sonrası İslâm düşünce geleneğine etki eden önemli isimlerle ilgili kuşatıcı monografik çalışmalar neredeyse yok denecek kadar azdır. Ömer Türker ve Osman Demir'in editörlüğünü yaptığı, Türkiye Diyanet Vakfı İslâm Araştırmaları Merkezi'nin "İkinci Klasik Dönem" projesi etrafında neşredilen İslâm Düşüncesinin Dönüşüm Çağında Fahreddin er-Râzî başlıklı kitap, alandaki bu boşluğu doldurma yönünde önemli bir adımdır.

Scholars of medieval and early modern science have long been indebted to the editors of Micrologus and the Micrologus Library for a series of volumes that broaden the boundaries of the field and deepen our understanding of its contexts. This latest contribution to the Micrologus Library offers a wide view of medieval thinking about prophecy. As Palazzo and Rodolfi point out in their introduction to this collection of essays, while numerous scholars have written about prophecies and their various uses by medieval people, there has been far less attention given to philosophical and theological teachings about prophecy. Şehristâni'de Hâricilik kavramini tanimlarken tarafsiz olamamistir. Bu sebeple tarihi olaylar karsisinda tutarsizliga dusmustur. Firkalar beseri kurumlar olmasina karsilik o firkalari seytan tarafindan ortaya atilan ilk fitne ile izah etmistir. Insan ile seytanin farkli ontolojik duzlemlere sahip oldugunu gozden kacirmistir. Bunun yaninda gerek tasniflerde gerekse yaptigi genelle-melerde yeterince tutarli olamamistir.

The most distinctive feature that distinguishes human being from other living creatures is his/her deep and broad love ability. However, as in all abilities, the ability of love can be disabled with ifrat and tafrit. (exaggeration/understatement). The Islamic tradition, which teach the measure under the guidance of the Qur'an and the Sunnah for almost every human behavior and reaction, also made ifrat/tafrit warnings to keep ability of "love" in "mediocre". One of the attempts to present these warnings in a tidy manner belongs to Ibn al-Jawzī, who was a name of the source of pride of the Ḥanbalī school in the sixth century (d. 597/1201) Ibn al-Jawzī took lessons from many scholars of Ḥanbalī school who were active in Baghdad. Contrary to the transmitting and anti-kalām tendency of the Ḥanbalī school, some of the scholars who took the lessons tended to rational interpretations and kalām. Ibn al-Jawzī must also have been influenced by this fact that he has not approached the phenomenon of love only with the harsh prohibitive attitude of the Ḥanbalī school. He tried to make deep examination by gooing to the background of the feeling from time to time and tried to make deep analyzes and analysed the root causes to deal with the problem. As a matter of fact, it is known that moral degeneration was common in the Islamic society during the Abbasid period. Apparently, the "love" also got its share from this degeneration and the measureless love that will end with worldly-destructive currents has gnawed the Muslim body. Ibn al-Jawzī tried to cope with one of the bleeding wounds of the society. In his work Dham al-Hawā, the purpose of the work was clearly stated by the author himself. Someone came to Ibn al-Jawzī and stated that he suffered from love and that he could not get rid off this pain. The patheticness of the person seeking a cure for his troubles provoked his patronage with the words of Ibn al-Jawzī, so the author wrote a selection of advice that would sprinkle the hearts of both that person and those who lived the same spirit. In his work, Ibn al-Jawzī, talked about the worldly and destructive consequences of the person's compliance with the "hawa", which means whim that does not think about the fate. By drawing attention to these facts, he aimed to strengthen reason and will and to enable the Muslim person to perform individual and social duties more efficiently. While doing this, he often conveyed the verses and hadiths without interpretation with the effect of the sectarian view based on narration and surrender, and also benefited from the influence of literature by using the poetry, which was the diwan of the Arabs, very effectively. Although the author seems to be approaching the phenomenon of "love" as a whole negatively, it is remarkable that the quotations he made from the ghazal poems and the idea he shared that love without overdo has maturing effect on individual. The work is composed of fifty chapters and chapters, each of which has no specific standard in itself.
