Résumé : On sait qu’Homère constitue la principale référence intertextuelle de Chariton (Reardon, 2003:333: “The most frequent of all Chariton’s literary references are to Homer".). Malgré le nombre croissant d’études sur cette relation, il reste encore beaucoup à explorer. Le but de cette communication est d’examiner l’emploi d’une formule homérique dans Chairéas et Callirhoé, roman de Chariton, à savoir « [...] τῆς/τοῦ δ'αὐτοῦ λύτο γούνατα καὶ φίλον ἦτορ » (Iliade, XXI 114 e 425 ; Odyssée, IV 703, XXIII 205, XXIV 345). Cette formule, appliquée à Callirhoé, à Chéreas et à Dionysios, se répète trois fois au long du roman (C&C I.1.14 ; III.6.3, IV.5.9). J’ai l’intention de vérifier si l’auteur fait une utilisation purement générique de la citation, ne retenant que son sens plus général, dans le seul but de prêter à son œuvre le prestige du poète archaïque, ou s’il y a une intention d’évoquer un contexte spécifique du poème cité, de manière à créer une expectative parmi ses lecteurs concernant le développement de l’œuvre. Il reste encore une troisième possibilité, celle que son utilisation soit liée à un autre but, à savoir celui de légitimer une caractéristique stylistique du propre auteur, celle de créer ses propres formules, à travers l’émulation du barde ancien.

The Greek world was full of the divine, and the imagined world of the ancient novels was no different. 1 Divinity and its worship pervade the novels' narratives, helping to unite, drive apart, and then reunite their protagonists. In this paper, I explore the relationship between ancient religion and literature, the transformation of literary tradition, and the place of the marvelous in the novels' narratives by examining the role that one aspect of the human experience of the gods, epiphany, plays in the genre. Although the novelists describe very few scenes of actual epiphany, 2 they make abundant use of the epiphanic metaphor in what I will call "epiphanic situations," when an internal audience reacts to the hero or, most often, the heroine of the novel as if he or she were a god or goddess. These epiphanic situations transform the common metaphor of divine beauty into a reality, at least as experienced by the internal audience, 3 and they offer the novelists an alternative to ekphrasis for expressing ineffable beauty.

Achilles Tatius' Leukippe and Kleitophon quotes Homer less frequently than other Greek novels, but it often refers to the epic tradition in a subtle and sophisticated way. A few intertexts suggest that gender issues (such as role exchanges between men and women) and cultural mediations (other texts, literary genres, or figurative arts providing a bridge between epic and the novel) are important elements in the evolution of an epic hero into a novelistic character. Parallels with the Homeric scholia show that Achilles Tatius' writing style can combine learning and humour, two of the most important features of the 'heroism' of some of his characters.

Ancient readers were highly attuned to etymologically and allusively significant character names, which helped shape their experience and understanding of narratives in a variety of ways. Authors frequently exploited that fact in their compositions. This paper capitalizes on that state of affairs by utilizing a literarily attuned onomastic analysis to explore two themes in Xenophon’s Ephesiaca. Specifically, I argue that Xenophon deploys several character names in interpretively important and sometimes sophisticated ways to serve the construction of themes relating to erotic andreia and lasting beauty. Regarding erotic andreia, this study largely supplements and corroborates conclusions that have been emerging in recent scholarship and offers a few fresh proposals for consideration. Xenophon’s interest in lasting beauty has not received much attention in contemporary scholarship outside of David Konstan’s Sexual Symmetry. The results of this study suggest that the theme deserves further examination. I offer a brief sketch, informed by onomastic analysis, of where the theme occurs and why it matters in the story Xenophon is telling.

Όπως συχνά επισημαίνεται από την κριτική, η πιο δραστική καινοτομία του Θανάση Βαλτινού όσον αφορά την αφήγηση έγινε όταν άφησε πίσω του το ρεαλιστικό είδος της πρωτοπρόσωπης μαρτυρίας και πέρασε στο μυθιστόρημα-ντοκουμέντο ή μυθιστόρημα τεκμηρίων, 1 καταργώντας τον αφηγητή και την πλοκή και αναθέτοντας την αφήγηση σε ντοκουμέντα, πλασματικά ή μη (επιστολές, διαφημιστικά φυλλάδια, πρακτικά δίκης, αποκόμματα του τύπου κτλ.). Το πρώτο μυθιστόρημα τεκμηρίων του Βαλτινού, τα Τρία ελληνικά μονόπρακτα (1978), συντίθεται από τρεις φακέλους διαφορετικής κατηγορίας ντοκουμέντων. Ο πρώτος περιέχει τα πρακτικά μιας δίκης μεταξύ δύο δεξιών απόστρατων αξιωματικών, βετεράνων του εμφυλίου. Στο δεύτερο μέρος παρατίθενται επιστολές που έλαβε από συγγενείς του ένας κατάδικος ενώ εκτίει την ποινή του σε διάφορες φυλακές. Το τρίτο μέρος αποτελείται από ένα διαφημιστικό φυλλάδιο με οδηγίες χρήσης μιας συσκευής κουζίνας. Τα ντοκουμέντα παρατίθενται συμπιληματικά, χωρίς κανένα σχόλιο-συνδετικό ιστό, γεγονός που δίνει την αίσθηση της αντικειμενικότητας και αναδεικνύει την αποσπασματικότητα της πρώτης ύλης, τα χάσματα και τις σιωπές του λόγου. Τα φαινομενικά ασύνδετα τρία μέρη του έργου, ωστόσο, συνδέονται με ένα υπόγειο νήμα, καθώς αντανακλούν διαφορετικές κοινωνικές, πολιτικές και γλωσσικές αντιλήψεις της μετεμφυλιακής Ελλάδας. Συνδέοντας το μυθιστόρημα του Βαλτινού με την τάση για αντικειμενοποίηση της λογοτεχνίας στην Ευρώπη και στην Αμερική, μετά τη γόνιμη θεωρητικά δεκαετία του 60, η Κυριακή Χρυσομάλλη-Henrich το χαρακτηρίζει ως faction σε αντιδιαστολή προς το fiction, εφόσον την /570 αφήγηση αναλαμβάνουν τα τεκμήρια. 2 Η σύνθεση αυτή που αποτέλεσε μια αντικειμενική και αποστασιοποιημένη χαρτογράφηση της κοινωνικής παθολογίας της εποχής, αποκαθήλωσε τον αφηγητή, αποθεώνοντας την αμεσότητα του τεκμηρίου και εγκαινιάζοντας μια νέα τεχνική αδιαμεσολάβητης παρουσίασης αρχειακού υλικού, πεποιημένου ή πραγματικού, την οποία ο συγγραφέας τελειοποίησε με το επόμενο έργο του Στοιχεία για τη δεκαετία του 60 (1989). Most studies of the prologue to Apuleius’ Metamorphoses describe how it anticipates the rhetorical and narrative strategies of the novel. The prologue, however, also shapes the reaction of its audience to the narration, demanding the audience’s attention and their willingness to be surprised.
The first three books of the novel provide the reader with narrative examples of what is expected from him: several characters are introduced who listen to stories (Lucius among them) and react to them both emotionally and practically, acting and making decisions under the influence of those stories. This narrative strategy clearly encourages the identification of the reader with Lucius and other characters who listen to stories: the reader feels the same emotions they feel, looks at things with their eyes, and hears the same stories through their ears. Moreover, what the characters cannot see or hear is also invisible or inaudible to the reader, who consequently shares their hopes and expectations about future events; the reader also shares in the characters’ surprise and disappointment when their expectations are not met.
The reader is thus completely enveloped by the fictional world of the novel, enacting the “willing suspension of disbelief” that Coleridge deemed necessary to truly enjoy fiction.
This narrative strategy is also employed later in the novel, albeit less frequently; above all it leads the reader to share Lucius’ total abandon to Isiac faith and its wonders at the conclusion of the novel.

As this volume is the last in our series of discussions of the five major Apocryphnl Acts of the Apostles (AAA), it seems appropriate to conclude our study with a new discussion of the authors, time and place of composition, and the readership of the major AAA'. The following analysis hopes to demonstrate that such a discussion is especially fruitful when carried out in dialogue with students of the ancient novel. The idea is not totally new, since in 1932 Rosa Soder already pointed to a number of similarities between the ancient novel and the AAA'. However, later students of the novel have not displayed the same interest. Tomas Hagg and Niklas Holzberg pay some attention to the AAA in their well known introductions to the ancient novel, but they are clearly happy to pass on to more congenial sub-jects3. Η προπτυχιακή εργασία που ακολουθεί εξετάζει αν μέσα από την λογοτεχνική γραφή του μυθιστορήματος «κερένια κούκλα» ο Κωνσταντίνος Χρηστομάνος σκιαγραφεί την Αθήνα των αρχών του 20ού αιώνα και αν δίνει μία διαυγή εικόνα της πόλης και της ζωής της στο αναγνωστικό κοινό.
Η εργασία απαρτίζεται από επτά κεφάλαια. Αρχικά, γίνεται αναφορά στη ζωή του Κωνσταντίνου Χρηστομάνου, το γενικότερο έργο του και ιδιαίτερα στην ύστατη δημιουργία του το «αθηναϊκό μυθιστόρημα», όπως τιτλοφορεί ο ίδιος, «κερένια κούκλα». Στη συνέχεια, παρουσιάζεται ο τρόπος με τον οποίο διαγράφεται η Αθήνα στο εν λόγω λογοτεχνικό έργο με άξονα κάποιες χαρακτηριστικές κριτικές του. The existence and presence of lyrical forms presented like songs singed by protagonists and included in the story of the versified diegesis is one of the most original characteristics of the romance in Byzantium. The present contribution aims to answer some questions about the role of these images and compositions in the fiction, especially remarkable in the byzantine novels of the Palaiologan period (s. XIII-XIV), through the simultaneous analysis of Livistros and Rhodamne and Kallimachos and Chrysorroe.

La existencia y presencia de formas poéticas líricas, presentadas como canciones cantadas por personajes protagonistas e inseridas en las diégesis en verso, es una de las características quizás más definitorias y originales del género de la novela en Bizancio. La presente contribución se propone responder a algunos interrogantes sobre el papel en la ficción de estas imágenes y composiciones, especialmente destacables en las novelas bizantinas de época paleóloga (s. XIII-XIV) a partir de y mediante el análisis simultáneo de los textos de Libistro y Rodamne y de Calímaco y Crisórroe.

Were the Greek novels titled according to a consistent convention? This article confronts the view that the original titles were always historiographical in form (Assyriaka, Lesbiaka, Aithiopika, etc.) and that readers were thus steered to expect, in the first instance, realistic narrative. Examining the evidence in detail, it argues that the formula the novels were likeliest to have shared was ta kata + girl's name (or girl's + boy's names). On this basis, it is concluded that what the titles of the novels promised was primarily invasive narratives of private life. 4 Rohde 1914, 263-64 (with 263, n. 1, and Schmid's note pp. 616-18); Perry 1967, 167-68. Such titles are common in the third volume of FGrH. 5 See, e.g., Morgan 1993, 197-98, using historiographical elements in the titles (though he accepts more variation than Henrichs) to reinforce his argument that the novels aim at a quasi-historical form of realism. Julian Ep. 89b 301b Bidez is sometimes cited (e.g., by Morgan) for the view that the novels were §n flstor¤aw e ‡dei . . . plãsmata, but the passage does not in fact refer to novels (see appendix below).

Este trabajo describe el modo en que la noción de deseo queda impresa en la Historia Apollonii Regis Tyri, novela tardolatina inspirada en tema griego y de larga pervivencia en la cultura medieval europea. Por una parte, se describe el deseo erótico representado por el texto -el incesto de padre e hija-y, por otra, la manera en que la representación de este deseo determina la arquitectura de la novela, conformándola como un artefacto epicúreo destinado a la obtención de altas dosis de placer.

Musaios’ Hero and Leander (V-VI cent. AD) falls into the hybridism of genres common in Late Antiquity and has been considered an epyllion, i.e., a miniature epic. The influence of the Odyssey, the most important architext of the novel, the Argonautica and the Dionysiaca (Nonnus of Panopolis) is evident in unequivocal textual allusions and in the imitation of typical epic scenes, such as the ones of the bath (264-5) and of the tempest (309-30).
However, a detailed analysis of the formal structure and narratological composition of the work shows an intentional imitation of the novelistic patterns. Love and adventure pervade the narrative and explain each event or decision. The typical novelistic motifs, e.g. love at first sight, symmetry of the lovers’ passion and its development, the religious context, as well as the physical, emotional and social portrait of the two main characters, and also the language
and style (parallelism, hyperbole, among other evidences of the progymnasmata) are to be found in Hero and Leander. Furthermore, there are countless quotations from typical intertexts of the genre, as well as direct allusion to specific novels.
An attentive reading of the work’s conclusion, particularly of the last verse, reveals a happy ending: the death of the main characters as a definitive and public, and therefore happy, union. The usage of verse instead of prose separates admittedly the work from the five precedent novels, but is shared by eight of the nine subsequent Byzantine novels. The discursive brevity of Hero and Leander, if compared with the length of the (other) novels, allows nonetheless an exquisite usage of the fundamental patterns of the genre.
Hero and Leander, therefore, presents the compositional features of a poetic and purified novel. It should be recognised as the sixth extant novel available to us and a decisive work for the transition from Greek to Byzantine novel.

In part 1, I argue that in Roman Greece Panthea and Abradates’ novella from the Cyropaedia was so extraordinaraly famous that Xenophon of Ephesus must have borrowed and allusively adapted their names so as to give sprechende Namen to his novel’s heroes. In part 2 and 3, I explore the intertextual potential of such a reference. Echoes from the Cyropaedia prove an important ingredient of Xenophon’s novel, helping define its fictional status in and against the background of its classical model. In part 4 I turn to the names themselves, arguing that Xenophon felt the need to hellenise his character names, which suit very well his implicit ‘revision’ of Panthea’s novella.

On the occasion of the publication of the new edition by Marco Barbero of the testimonies and fragments of Iamblichus' Babyloniaca, it's time for a reassessment of the importance of this fragmentary work. Special attention is given to its Oriental background, its connection with folktale motifs and types, the importance of the leitmotif of blood, its Orientalist flavour and its penchant for the depiction of "irregular loves" (with some thoughts on possibile links with the Hemesene branch of the Severan dynasty).
