The material and the symbolic in theorizing social strati cation: issues of gender, ethnicity and class ABSTRACT Within most approaches to strati cation gender and ethnicity are seen to pertain primarily to the symbolic or cultural realms, whilst class is regarded as pertaining to material inequality. This constructs gender and ethnic positioning as entailing honour, deference, worth, value and differential treatment (sometimes expressed through the notion of 'status'), but the social relations around these are themselves not seen as constitutive of social strati cation. In this paper I will rethink social strati cation away from the polarity between the material and the symbolic, and argue that material inequality, as a set of outcomes relating to life conditions, life chances and solidar y processes, is informed by claims and struggles over resources of different types, undertaken in terms of gender, ethnicity/race and class. This formulation allows us to include these categorial formations, alongside class, as important elements of social strati cation i.e. as determining the allocation of socially valued resources and social places/ locations.

Cet article revient sur une enquête réalisée dans une école militaire. L’enquêtrice, alors doctorante et fille d’un officier, avait alors particulièrement répondu aux attentes associées au statut de « fille de … » que les enquêtés lui avait reconnu. Cet article revient sur les conditions de l’enquête, sur les usages qui ont été faits de la filiation militaire et du genre de l’enquêtrice et plus particulièrement sur la façon dont les dominants du corps ont mobilisé les ressources tout à la fois familiales, scolaires et « militaires » de l’apprentie sociologue pour alimenter les stratégies de distinction et les hiérarchies implicites dans le corps des officiers.

Fort des acquis de l’historiographie sur le négoce des ports européens de la fin de l’époque médiévale au début de la période contemporaine, l’ambition de ce livre est de faire dialoguer des chercheuses et chercheurs en histoire portuaire et maritime avec celles et ceux qui travaillent sur l’histoire des femmes et du genre. La période étudiée permet d’interroger l’éventuel impact de la dilatation des horizons commerciaux des Européens et de l’essor du trafic colonial sur les rôles des femmes dans les  places portuaires. Si, en France, le terme de « négoce » est utilisé dans les sources pratiquement dès le début de l’époque moderne, le mot « négociant » apparaît à la fin du XVIIe siècle pour désigner la frange supérieure des marchands. Il s’agit par conséquent de mettre en lumière l’accès de certaines femmes au titre de « négociante ».
L’ouvrage regroupe douze textes, portant sur des espaces géographiques et des périodes différentes, répartis en deux grands axes. Le premier cherche à mettre en évidence la diversité du travail féminin dans les milieux portuaires européens sur la longue durée, de la marchande à la négociante. Le second s’intéresse aux structures commerciales (sociétés et maisons de commerce) et aux rôles des femmes dans les entreprises familiales, au regard du modèle économique des sociétés préindustrielles.
La finalité de cet ouvrage est de montrer des femmes en capacité d’agir à partir de l’exemple des milieux portuaires, en faisant émerger des figures oubliées de « femmes fortes » qui participent à l’économie française et européenne de la fin du Moyen Âge au XIXe siècle.

Cette recherche porte sur les processus, le fonctionnement et les enjeux de la médiatisation du sport féminin dans la presse écrite française. Process theories have been extremely influential in the evolution of L2 writing instruction. Responding to purely formal views of writing, proponents borrowed the techniques and theories of cognitive psychology and L1 composition to refine the ways we understand and teach writing. While remaining the dominant pedagogical orthodoxy for over 30 years, however, process models have for some time found themselves under siege from more socially-oriented views of writing which reject their inherent liberal individualism. Instead, genre approaches see ways of writing as purposeful, socially situated responses to particular contexts and communities. In this paper, I discuss the importance of genre approaches to teaching L2 writing and how they complement process views by emphasising the role of language in written communication. #

Eighteenth-century Britain saw the emergence of a new poetic genre, the “work” poem which took various forms of labor as its subject and was often written by laborers themselves. Several of these working class poets found their lives transformed due to the success of their verse (Stephen Duck most famously), but most faded into literary obscurity. However, a substantial body of “work” poems was produced by a diverse group of poets throughout the century, each manifesting divergent concerns and attitudes about the experience of work. This chapter assesses the formal connections uniting this poetic genre, particularly the frequent use of such literary devices as ironic distancing, litotes, and mock-georgic description. Instead of solely classifying “work” poems on the basis of their subject matter, this chapter demonstrates that such poetry (indeed the genre itself) lends itself to sophisticated literary techniques often associated with other poetic genres. In this fashion the full measure of eighteenth-century working class poetry can be evaluated more fairly, particularly by analyzing the formation of a new genre designed expressly by the poets themselves. The chapter ultimately seeks to demonstrate the connectedness, rather than the alienation, of working class poetry to the eighteenth-century British poetic tradition.

Using a neoformalist approach to the study of film and television, this paper analyzes the American Animated Cartoon, arguing that it shows particular traits and narrative strategies; and thus it can be considered a genre that deals with specific cultural dilemmas.

Fondé sur une enquête ethnographique et sur des données quantitatives, cet article traite de la construction sociale du rapport à l’emploi chez des mères seules allocataires du Revenu de solidarité active. Celles-ci peuvent avoir du mal à accéder à l’accompagnement professionnel, alors même que les travailleuses qui les accompagnent cherchent à leur inculquer une « féminité active ». Certaines allocataires voient ainsi leurs rapports à l’emploi disqualifiés : elles sont renvoyées vers un traitement familialiste tout en ayant conscience de ne pas satisfaire aux attendus de la féminité active. D’autres allocataires, souvent plus diplômées, parviennent malgré tout à accéder à l’accompagnement professionnel, ce qui leur permet de maintenir un rapport espéré à l’emploi et de s’approprier sélectivement la féminité active.

The greater emphasis on information books in elementary schools has led to an increased emphasis on informational writing as well. Although some have suggested utilizing mentor texts to engage children in informational writing, there has been little information about the developmental progression of children's ability to compose in this genre. What has been missing is advice on how to support children's approximations of the information report genre. This article aims to do precisely that by presenting a developmental framework of informational writing derived from a study of K–5 children's writing. We share the framework, provide examples of children's compositions at each developmental level, and demonstrate how teachers can use this continuum to support increasingly more mature forms of information text.

Depuis 2008, les circulaires de rentrée, qui fixent chaque année les priorités de la politique éducative, rappellent la nécessité de lutter à l'école " contre toutes les violences et toutes les discriminations, notamment l'homophobie ". Pourtant, face à la possible diffusion dans des classes de CM1 et de CM2 d'un court-métrage d'animation parlant d'homosexualité, Le Baiser de la lune, Monsieur Chatel a tenu à préciser les limites de cette mission : elle ne saurait concerner l'école primaire et commencerait au collège pour se poursuivre au lycée. Parler d'homosexualité à l'école maternelle et élémentaire serait selon lui prématuré et relèverait d'une initiative privée que ne saurait cautionner l'éducation nationale. L'actuel ministre se démarque donc des instructions données par son prédécesseur qui englobaient dans ce combat l'ensemble de l'Ecole, avec une majuscule, sans créer de distinction entre les niveaux d'enseignement. Il méconnaît également d'autres textes officiels qui, tels que celui publié au Bulletin officiel du 2 novembre 2000, inscrivaient la lutte contre l'homophobie " à l'école, au collège, et au lycée " dans le cadre de l'éducation à l'égalité des filles et des garçons par l'intermédiaire de la lutte contre les stéréotypes de sexes. Ces injonctions contradictoires nécessitent donc certains rappels : 1. La lutte contre l'homophobie, conformément aux instructions officielles de l'éducation nationale, concerne tous les niveaux d'enseignement et commence dès la petite section de l'école maternelle. Néanmoins, elle ne saurait prendre dans l'enseignement primaire la même forme qu'au collège et au lycée. Elle n'implique pas nécessairement de parler de sexualité mais nécessite de diversifier les modèles proposés aux élèves. Les agencements familiaux, sexuels et sentimentaux actuels sont beaucoup plus nombreux et complexes que ceux qui leurs sont communément proposés comme des horizons de vie souhaitables. 2. Interroger les stéréotypes de sexes comme le demande la "Convention interministérielle pour l'égalité entre les filles et les garçons, les femmes et les hommes dans le système éducatif" de 2006 ne peut se faire sans questionner l'injonction à l'hétérosexualité qu'ils véhiculent. Un petit garçon ne fera pas nécessairement sa vie d'adulte avec une femme, une petite fille n'est pas tenue d'espérer un prince charmant. Pourtant les histoires racontées en classe envisagent rarement d'autres possibles. Diversifier les représentations que l'on propose aux élèves est donc là aussi primordial. 3. La lutte contre l'homophobie dès les premiers niveaux d'enseignements est d'autant plus nécessaire qu'il y a potentiellement dans chaque classe des garçons ou des filles qui aimeront un jour de manière définitive ou occasionnelle quelqu'un de leur sexe. On évalue en général entre 5 % et 10 % le pourcentage d'homosexuels ou de lesbiennes dans une population donnée. A l'échelle d'une classe de trente élèves, cela représente entre un et trois enfants ou adolescent-e-s amenés un jour à se qualifier ainsi. La prévalence du suicide chez les jeunes homosexuel-le-s implique que l'homosexualité soit banalisée dès le plus jeune âge. Sinon, comment éviter qu'un adolescent attiré par une personne de son sexe ne se perçoive comme marginal ? 4. Il n'est pas nécessaire de comprendre le sens d'une insulte pour qu'elle soit efficace. Il arrive que des élèves d'élémentaire mais aussi de maternelle utilisent le terme "pédé" afin de blesser un camarade. Certes les enfants ne connaissent pas toujours la signification des mots qu'ils emploient mais ils saisissent très bien qu'ils désignent un comportement humiliant et répréhensible. Celui ou celle qui se découvre ou se découvrira homosexuel-le n'a pas besoin d'avoir été lui ou elle-même insulté-e pour intérioriser cette honte. 5. La lutte contre l'homophobie ne se limite pas à la condamnation des insultes ou des remarques homophobes. Réagir à des propos injurieux est une obligation de tout éducateur et de toute éducatrice mais ne saurait suffire. Il faut cesser de présenter l'hétérosexualité comme étant la seule sexualité normale, naturelle et légitime. Cela implique d'utiliser en classes des situations quotidiennes souvent nombreuses, comme lorsqu'un élève dit à un-e camarade qu'un garçon ne peut pas être amoureux d'un garçon ou une fille embrasser une fille. 6. Il n'est pas nécessaire de demander une autorisation aux parents d'élèves pour aborder ces sujets en classe. Il est toutefois possible de les informer qu'ils le seront au cours de l'année scolaire. Des parents ne sauraient soustraire leur enfant aux enseignements obligatoires : la lutte contre les discriminations racistes, antisémites, sexistes et homophobes fait partie des missions de l'école républicaine au même titre que l'apprentissage de la lecture et du calcul. 7. La lutte contre l'homophobie ne s'ajoute pas à l'ensemble d'un programme d'apprentissage déjà chargé mais s'intègre aux enseignements traditionnels. Un livre comme L'Heure des parents, de Christian Bruel, en montrant différentes formes de schémas familiaux, est un formidable support pour une séance de langage en petite section. Camélia et Capucine, d'Adela Turin, conte de fées atypique, se prête volontiers à une analyse littéraire en CM2. 8. Tout comme parler du fait religieux n'implique pas de faire la promotion du judaïsme, du christianisme ou de l'islam, évoquer l'homosexualité en classe ne peut s'apparenter à du prosélytisme et ne saurait influencer de manière néfaste le développement de l'enfant. Il s'agit simplement de proposer aux élèves des outils pour comprendre le monde qui les entoure, de leur apprendre la tolérance et le respect, valeurs constitutives de l'école républicaine, et de leur permettre de se projeter, d'une manière adaptée à leur âge, dans leur vie future.

With current constraints of public funding of research the question
of principal investigator (PI) success has gained prominence. Yet
understanding grant success remains problematic. While often
associated with peer acceptance of the proposal text, research
fundability in large part is informed by PI participation in the social
systems of research funding, knowledge making, and academic
work. This article reports on part of an in-depth longitudinal
exploration of how three expert science PIs in Canada navigate
and negotiate these contexts to achieve sustained grant funding
success. It focuses on how one of these scientists develops and
draws on collaborative research networks in creating fundable
front-line knowledge. The findings contribute towards an understanding
of the role experiential learning and individual agency
play in PI success. Practical implications for early-career researchers
are outlined. Further questions about the interconnectedness of PI
navigating and negotiating research funding and knowledge and
academic work are raised.

Instead of considering fi lm and television adaptations in the context of the source texts they are adapting, this essay proposes another context for their reception and analysis: the genre of adaptation itself. Focusing on the Hollywood traditions of masculine adventure and feminine romance associated respectively with adaptations of Alexandre Dumas père and fi ls, it identifi es four genre markers common to both traditions that make it more likely a given adaptation will be perceived as an adaptation even by an audience that does not know its source, and one antimarker associated with adaptations in the tradition of the younger Dumas but not the elder. The essay concludes by proposing adaptation as a model for all Hollywood genres.

Heritage language speakers constitute a unique cultural and linguistic resource in the United States while also presenting particular challenges for language educators and language programs. This paper examines the potential of systemic functional linguistics (SFL) in a curriculum for Spanish second language learners/heritage speakers, with particular emphasis on the meaning-making of language in the construal of discourse. Following SFL pedagogy, descriptive language teaching refers to ways of treating language in functional terms; productive language teaching involves students in using the resource of their language in powerful ways in light of the demands of particular social contexts. Many heritage speakers have developed their heritage language (Spanish) in the family context but want to be able to use it in the professional areas. SFL with its explicit focus on language allows for the development of advanced literacy in a heritage language in the educational context. Accordingly, the paper discusses explicit instruction of genre/register theory as a way of promoting students' awareness of discourse-semantics and lexicogrammatical features of academic language in courses for heritage speakers. Students' success in developing academic registers in Spanish is evident in their use of lexicogrammatical features (such as grammatical metaphor) that index academic writing.

Dans notre article, nous essayons de dégager les différentes conditions qui ont permis l'émergence d'une innovation sociale dans l'aide à domicile. Nous mobilisons plusieurs champs théoriques qui nous permettent d'en étudier à la fois les financements, les acteurs-trices et la place dans les activités socio-économiques aux principes non strictement marchands.

Drawing on British data from two annual sweeps of the ISSP eight years apart in 1994 and 2002, for modules focusing on 'Family and Changing Gender Roles', this paper examines the extent to which changes in women's labour market participation, changing ideologies/discourses of gender and changing forms of intimate relationships are affecting the ways in which couples organize household money, and the implications of such changes for recent theories of intimate relationships. The analysis indicates that by 2002, the type of relationship respondents had established, together with their social class position, were both independently related to the ways in which they managed money, after controlling for socioeconomic and cultural or discursive factors. Our findings also provide a degree of support for the thesis of a partial decline in the male breadwinner model of gender, as indicated by small declines in the use of the relatively inegalitarian female whole wage and housekeeping allowance systems which were most likely to be used by married couples and cohabiting fathers, expressing relatively traditional ideologies/discourses of breadwinning -and a slight increase in the use of the partial pool, which was most likely to be used by childless cohabiting couples in which male partners expressed less traditional ideologies of breadwinning and women were in middle-class jobs with incomes high enough to facilitate partially separate finances. We also suggest, however, that in so far as cohabiting couples earning different amounts define equality as contributing equally to household expenditure, it is possible that rather than being associated with shifts to greater equality in access to money for personal spending and saving, the partial pool may be associated with marked inequalities, because it may enable gender inequalities generated in the labour market to be more directly transposed into inequalities within households, despite the decline of traditional discourses of male breadwinning and the increasing importance of egalitarian ideologies of co-provisioning.

Studies show that family businesses need to manage conflict, but there has been little research on different conflict manifestations and their impact on families involved in businesses together. This article explores polyamorous women’s potential to enlarge the concept of sexual subjectivity through their engagement in nontraditional relationships and their attempts to reject sexual objectification. Polyamorous people openly engage in romantic, sexual, and/or affective relationships with multiple people simultaneously. Polyamory differs from swinging with its emphasis on long-term, emotionally intimate relationships and from adultery with its focus on honesty and (ideally) full disclosure of the network of sexual relationships to all who participate in or are affected by them. Both men and women have access to additional partners in polyamorous relationships, distinguishing them from polygamy. This ethnographic analysis expands sociological understanding of women’s sexuality by investigating this previously unexamined area of sexual subjectivity. This paper was written for the GSA annual conference in 2011. It offers a detailled analysis of the German-Italian war movie HIMMELFAHRTSKOMMANDO EL ALAMEIN (1968), which tells the same events from three different, conflicting perspectives: the Germans, the Americans, and the Italians. Doing so, the movie deconstructs generic conventions of war movies, highlighting their ideological aporias.

In this essay, I argue through analysis of the genre of campaign announcements that third-party presidential candidates have rhetorical norms of their own that address their unique challenges as political outsiders. Specifically, I contend that their announcements are a variant of the announcement genre and are warranted by the recurring situational barriers, perceived strategic constraints, and overall purposes for minor-party presidential campaigns. In addition to offering an alternative theory of third-party announcements based on analysis of over 40 such statements, I provide three case studies—including statements by Progressive Henry Wallace, Independent Eugene McCarthy, and Reform Party nominee Patrick Buchanan—to demonstrate this variant of the genre. Finally, I conclude by discussing the implications of this study for understanding third-party rhetoric.

With Malinkés of Guinea, home place lies both in the search of continuity over the time and a strong spatial anchorage.That explains why some locals from Guirlan village -in the north east of the country -say that household « never dies ». So ideally its members have to immortalize it for ever. But no matter how stable is their home, individuals move frequently. First married women -whose contribution is indispensable to the development of the household in patrilocal society-, womens' commercial migrations, young men « adventures » and then seasonal trips to gold mines. This feature article aims at capturing how spatial anchorage and mobility interact trough the necessary return journey. RESUME Chez les Malinkés de Guinée, la résidence repose à la fois sur la recherche d'une continuité temporelle et sur un fort ancrage spatial. C'est ce qui fait dire à certains habitants du village de Guirlan -au nord est du pays -que la concession « ne meurt jamais ». Aussi, ses membres se doivent de la perpétuer, dans l'idéal, indéfiniment. Mais à la stabilité spatiale de la résidence se confrontent les nombreux déplacements des individus. Mobilité matrimoniale des femmes d'abord -indispensable au développement de la concession en société patrilocale -, migrations commerciales féminines, « aventures » des jeunes hommes et déplacements saisonniers vers les mines d'or ensuite. Cet article vise donc à saisir les modalités d'interaction entre ancrage spatial et mobilités à travers la nécessité du retour.

Niniejsza praca ma na celu przedstawienie teorii mitotwórczej J. R. R. Tolkiena, z perspektywy jej wymiaru duchowego. Od czasów antycznych teorie, tudzież filozofie, opierały się na myśleniu abstrakcyjnym i miały za zadanie wyjaśnienie ówczesnemu człowiekowi otaczającej go rzeczywistości. Nie inaczej było z Tolkienowską teorią, na potrzebę której ukuł swój termin Mitopoeia. „Duchowy wymiar Tolkienowskiej Teorii Mitotwórczej” – tłumacząc tytuł tej pracy na język Polski – przekłada się na wiele sfer życia Tolkiena. Pierwsza z tych płaszczyzn, to przypisywany mu przez niektórych krytyków program filozoficzny. Na tym wymiarze skupia się pierwszy rozdział tej pracy: „The Philosophical Disenchantment.” Jednak jak sugeruje tytuł, stanowi on zaledwie tło wszelkich dalszych poszukiwań, gdyż oferuje badaczom Tolkienowskiej myśli jedynie jej racjonalizację i demitologizację. Życiowa pasja Tolkiena, filologia komparatywna, daje wystarczające zrozumienie jego fenomenu, a przynajmniej zdaniem kilku krytyków. Niezaprzeczalnie stanowiła ona inspirację, a zarazem była narzędziem, którego Tolkien użył podług swej ogromnej wiedzy z zakresu językoznawstwa. Pomimo, iż w tej pracy „Comparative Philology” jest omawiana w drugiej kolejności, to właśnie ta dyscyplina była źródłem znajomości filozofii u Tolkiena. Podążając krokami Tolkieniany nie można jednak na tym poprzestać. Trzeci wymiar, jakże metafizyczny i filozoficzny w swych założeniach i implikacjach to odkrycie Owena Barfielda, znajomego Tolkiena. Barfield odkrył Teorię „Jedności Semantycznej,” co Tolkienowi przyszło łatwo przyjąć do wiadomości: język jako narzędzie może również być transcendentny, ze względu na swe początki. Dla Tolkiena była to jedna z tych rzeczy, która pozwoliła mu uwierzyć w smoki. „Philological Philosophy: Let There Be Dragons” – jest zatem łącznikiem między dwoma światami. Jednakże Tolkien nie był byle fantastą, oderwanym od ziemi. Teoria Barfielda, obudziła w nim nadzieję. Pomimo to, tak jak każdy rozsądny i racjonalny człowiek Tolkien musiał dowiedzieć się, „czy to prawda.” Potrzebował czegoś, aby idee odnieść do nie tyle rzeczywistego doświadczenia, ile prawdy. Prawda, bowiem wyzwala. Mimo nieustannego negowania jego wiary, to właśnie ona umożliwiła mu dalsze rozważanie tych teorii. I nie da się inaczej wytłumaczyć jego mitotwórstwa, jak przez uznanie jego wiary. Miłości do Boga, która była tak głęboka, że aż sięgała wiedzy teologicznej. Tego, między innymi, tyczy ostatni rozdział tej pracy: „Myth Becomes Truth.”

The study is presenting some partial findings from the research on resilience in old age. Resilience is understood as effective dealing with adversities, encountered in old age; with regard to both the disposition and also to the process and its result. The study is based on narrative approach, according to which the experience, and thus also the experience of resilience, is narratively constructed. This means that we not only narrate the life", but also live the narration". Main assumption of narrative gerontology (Randall) is, that resilient shaping of life is possible thanks to the good, strong story" lived in spite of adversities. 50 older adults were studied using semi-structured interviews. From the total number of interviews a sub-group of 11 resilient participants (age 75-93) was selected on the basis of the set criteria of resilience. A narrative analysis was realized with the accent on genre, which is defined as a type of shaping the experience. Analysis shows, that several genres of construction of resilience can be understood as various ways, of how do participants resist in our culture the dominating narrative of decline". In the study three genres of narratively construed resilience are identified, described, illustrated and theoretically conceptualized: 1) heroic coping; 2) affirmation of lucky moments; 3) ironic stance.

Since publication use of the WHOQOL-Bre`f has rapidly risen. However, as yet no population norms have been published as a reference point against which researchers can interpret their findings. This study provides preliminary population norms for this purpose. Randomly sampled community residents from two studies were pooled and used to examine the properties of the WHOQOL-Bre`f by age group, gender and health status. The results showed that general norms for the WHOQOL-Bre`f domains were 73.5 (SD=18.1) for the Physical health domain, 70.6 (14.0) for Psychological wellbeing, 71.5 (18.2) for Social relationships and 75.1 (13.0) for the Environment domain. In general scores declined slightly by age group. For females scores were stable across the lifespan with an accelerated decline after the age of 60 years. Males exhibited a more consistent and even decline across the lifespan. There were significant differences in WHOQOL-Bre`f scores when reported by health status, with those in poor health obtaining scores that were up to 50% lower than those in excellent health. Effect sizes between different health status levels are reported. These preliminary norms and effect sizes may be used as reference points for interpreting WHOQOL-Bre`f scores. They provide additional information to the numerous national studies already reporting on the validity of the WHOQOL-Bre`f. An important challenge for communication scientists is to characterize and understand hybrid genres. Satirical news is such a hybrid genre and comprises a blend of the genres of comedy, news, and political opinion. This theoretical article aims to contribute to this discussion by further specifying the concept of discursive mode. Discursive modes designate certain communicative orientations toward a particular genre element. We make our argument concrete by introducing a typology of metaphorical humor in satirical news. Our humoristic metaphors in satirical news (HMSN) typology, demonstrates that satirists can realize and switch between 4 different discursive modes through metaphors. These discursive modes comprise different combinations of core rhetorical functions in satirical news (humor, education, and evaluation). We describe each type of metaphor in our typology and present a research agenda identifying key issues that require future research and empirical verification.

Work and Family Research in the First Decade of the 21st Century Scholarship on work and family topics expanded in scope and coverage during the 2000-2010 decade, spurred by an increased diversity of workplaces and of families, by methodological innovations, and by the growth of communities of scholars focused on the work-family nexus. We discuss these developments as the backdrop for emergent work-family research on six central topics: (a) gender, time, and the division of labor in the home; (b) paid work: too much or too little; (c) maternal employment and child outcomes; (d) work-family conflict; (e) work, family, stress, and health; and (f) work-family policy. We conclude with a discussion of trends important for research and suggestions about future directions in the work-family arena. As part of a larger project on media identities and roles, this paper presents a methodological framework for the investigation of editorials' genre(s), ''genre'' being primarily defined in terms of the purpose of the text type. The methodological framework follows the first steps of Askehave and Swales' ''text-driven procedure for genre analysis'' (2001) and combines different types of analysis: complex speech acts representing the general line of argumentation, delimitation of the public spheres through the definition of the directives' addressees, positive and negative ATTITUDE values, and types of professional roles in which editorialists present themselves. The application of this framework to a corpus of Le Monde's editorials uncovered how the general structure of the editorials serves their stated purpose and more. Indeed, it revealed the concept Le Monde has of its role in the national, European, and international public spheres. It showed very clearly that Le Monde as a media is not only a place where some public sphere's interactions can take place, but also that it is a full participant in various public spheres with its own values and positions. The application of the proposed framework unveiled fragments of Le Monde's identity, but for a fuller description of its role(s), an enrichment of the framework is needed. #

Zarówno próby typologizacji, jak i opisu gatunków dziennikarskich realizowano w Rosji w specyficzny, rzecz by można: wyjątkowy sposób. Specyfika owa wiąże się nie tyle z "wyjątkowością " rosyjskiej kultury (особый путь), której dynamika miałaby być trudna do eksplanacji czy porównywania, ile raczej z faktem, iż sama refleksja na temat charakteru tekstów dziennikarskich w przestrzeni rosyjskojęzycznej realizowana była autonomicznie, w oderwaniu od badań międzynarodowych. Najistotniejszą przyczynę owej izolacji stanowiła jednak nie tyle upośledzona korelacja rosyjskojęzycznego dyskursu naukowego z międzynarodowym dyskursem akademickim, nie izolacja rosyjskiego społeczeństwa, ale przede wszystkim autonomiczność samego przedmiotu badań, jakim było dziennikarstwo radzieckie. System produkcji radzieckich tekstów dziennikarskich pozostawał prawie całkowicie zamkniętym i samowystarczalnym, stanowiąc tym samym swoisty fenomen. Również rozwój dziennikarskiej struktury gatunkowej w niewielkim stopniu korespondował z tradycją i dynamiką, charakteryzującą inne kraje, w tym najbliższych sąsiadów z obozu socjalistycznego. Konsekwencje autonomicznie dokonującej się ewolucji (bądź stagnacji) gatunkowej są widoczne do tej pory. Stało się tak pomimo dwóch ostatnich dekad integracji rosyjskiego dziennikarstwa ze światowymi systemami medialnymi , a także pomimo współpracy rosyjskich medioznawców z zagranicznymi kolegami. Co więcej, proces przeszło dwudziestoletniej integracji, czy też globalizacji, mediów został w przypadku Rosji wyraźnie zahamowany, bądź nawet odwrócony.

This article examines the genre of syllabus in higher education. In particular, it focuses on the intertextuality and interdiscursivity of paper-based and web-mediated syllabi and the ways they are used to promote links between various academic e classroom and research e genres and discourse communities. The corpus consists of ten syllabi with different interactivity levels. To avoid discrepancy in content, only syllabi for introductory linguistics courses offered at several US universities have been selected. The study shows that the syllabus is not only a document, but also a site of intertextuality and interdiscursivity. It is also demonstrated that the syllabus is utilized by instructors both to manifest their membership in multiple discourse communities and to socialize students into (some of) them. Finally, it is suggested that even though the digital medium increases interactivity of the syllabus, web-mediated and paper-based syllabi can still be treated as instantiations of the same genre.
