French as a second language

Parental involvement is key to success in learning languages (CITE). A growing number of immigrant students, who speak neither French nor English upon arrival, attend French as a Second Language (FSL) programs in Canada (Canadian Parents for French, 2010). As English Language Learners (ELLs), these students must negotiate new ways of learning and sharing knowledge in the FSL classroom. What do we know about immigrant parents' parental involvement in their children's FSL education? How does parental involvement play out in their children's FSL education? This presentation answers these questions firstly by offering a systematic review of the literature on immigrant parental involvement in their children's language education, honing in on the FSL context, and reports data from two recently completed project in the GTA. After reviewing the literature, we will share data from one qualitative and one mixed-methods project, which show that immigrant parents are actively involved in their children's FSL learning, set high expectations, and see languages as a valuable resource. As a preliminary step to a broader investigation into the matter, we welcome insight from the audience and will open the floor for discussion to unpack the narratives that surround immigrant parental involvement in their children's language education. In closing, we will delve into the different ways in which parents can be involved in their children's language learning, with a particular focus on arts-based approaches to knowledge construction and sharing.

"Wortschatz verstehen, erklären, lernen": mit diesem Titel widmet sich dieses Heft einem Themenbereich, der zwar zu den traditionellen Handlungsfeldern der Französischdidaktik gehört, doch seit geraumer Zeit kaum neue Anregungen erfahren hat. Diese Vernach­ lässigung der Wortschatzdidaktik überrascht umso mehr, als der Wortschatz unbestritten die Grundlage für das Sprachlernen bildet. Deshalb befassen sich die Beiträge des vorliegenden Heftes mit innovativen und zukunftsweisenden Aspekten dieses Handlungs­ feldes: dem korpusbasierten Sprachlernen und der Vermittlung von phraseologischen Grundwortschätzen. Der erste Aufsatz stellt eine Untersuchung zur rezeptiven Wortschatzkompetenz von niedersächsischen Französischlernern in den Jahrgängen 8, 10 und 12 vor. Die Studie wurde im Rahmen des forschenden Lernens in der Fremdsprachenlehrerbildung von Christoph Bürgel und Dirk Siepmann betreut und von den Französischstudenten Henning Mittag und Oliver Wicher der Universität Osnabrück durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die rezeptiven Wortschatzkompetenzen der Mehrheit der Studienteilnehmerinnen und ­teilnehmer unzureichend sind, um grundlegende Anforderungen an das Lese­ und Hörverstehen angemessen zu erfüllen. Im zweiten Beitrag stellen Christoph Bürgel und Dirk Siepmann Listen der "unités phraséologiques fondamentales du français" vor. Mit diesen Listen ist es ca. ein halbes Jahrhundert nach der Erstellung des français fondamental gelungen, die existierenden Grundwortschätze um die zentralen Mehrworteinheiten des Französischen zu ergänzen. Diese Listen liegen zurzeit mit deutschen Übersetzungen und einer Klassifizierung nach Phrasemkategorien vor und werden in naher Zukunft ausdifferenziert (Gliederung nach Themengebieten und Sprachfunktionen), um sie für unterrichtliche Aktivitäten noch besser nutzbar zu machen. Welche Bedeutung Phraseme für die Entwicklung von Sprach­ kompetenzen haben, wird am Beispiel der Sprech­ und Schreibkompetenz aufgezeigt. Abschließend stellt Dirk Siepmann das korpusbasierte Sprachlernen (data-driven learning bzw. apprentissage sur corpus) vor. Dieser Ansatz stützt sich einerseits auf eine konstruktivistische Fremdsprachendidaktik, die dem entdeckenden Lernen eine zentrale Rolle einräumt, andererseits auf eine veränderte Sprachauffassung, die sich in den letz­ten 15 Jahren im britischen Kontextualismus und in der Konstruktionsgrammatik Bahn gebrochen hat: Der gewöhnliche Sprachgebrauch beruht vollständig auf verschiedenen Formen von idiomatischen Halbfertig­ oder Fertigprodukten, die sprachwissenschaftlich als "Konstruktionen" bezeichnet werden. Deshalb gilt es, Lerner für dieses konstruk­ tionelle Sprachverständnis mittels korpusbasierter Spracharbeit zu sensibilisieren. Wie sich das apprentissage sur corpus als sprachunterrichtliche Methodik gestaltet, wird an einschlägigen Werkzeugen und konkreten Übungen für den Französischunterricht aufge­ zeigt. Die genannten Beiträge machen zugleich die Stoßrichtung dieses Themenheftes deutlich. Ziel ist es, dem Wortschatz­ bzw. Sprachlernen im Französischunterricht neue Impulse zu geben, und zwar nicht nur durch ein verändertes -sprich "konstruktionelles"-Sprach­- verständnis -, sondern auch durch eine anders akzentuierte Methodik, welche der Förde­rung der Sprachbewusstheit durch entdeckendes Lernen mit Korpora die ihr gebührende Aufmerksamkeit schenkt.

Cette contribution analyse le lien entre la construction identitaire de jeunes étudiants plurilingues, leur pratiques langagières et littératiées, et leur parcours d'appropriation du français et de l'anglais en contexte universitaire. L'étude se base sur une analyse croisée de données discursives récoltées dans deux projets de recherche effectués l'un dans une université suisse francophone, l'autre canadienne anglophone. L'article relève la manière dont les conceptualisations complexes des identités, relatives notamment aux pratiques littératiées,  influencent l’appropriation langagière.

Set against the background of the rapid transformation of Russia into a major European power, the two volumes of French and Russian in Imperial Russia consider the functions of multilingualism and the use of French as a prestige language among the elite, as well as the benefits of Franco-Russian bilingualism and the anxieties to which it gave rise.
The first volume, Language Use among the Russian Elite, provides insight into the development of the practice of speaking and writing French at the Russian court and among the Russian nobility from the mid-eighteenth century to the mid-nineteenth century. It examines linguistic practice, the use of French in Russia in various spheres, domains and genres, as well as the interplay between the two languages. Including examples of French lexical influence on Russian, this volume takes a sociolinguistic interest in language choice, code-switching and the degree to which the language community being observed was bilingual or diglossic.
The second volume, Language Attitudes and Identity, explores the impact of French on Russian language attitudes, especially among the literary community. It examines the ways in which perceptions of Russian francophonie helped to shape social, political and cultural identity as Russia began to seek space of its own in the European cultural landscape. In the process, it investigates approaches to translation, journalistic debate about language, literary representation of devotees of French social practice and fashion, and manifestations of linguistic purism and patriotism.
A comprehensive and original contribution to the multidisciplinary study of language, the two volumes address, from a historical viewpoint, subjects of relevance to sociolinguists (especially bilingualism and multilingualism), social and cultural historians (social and national identity, linguistic and cultural borrowing), Slavists (the relationship of Russian and western culture) and students of the European Enlightenment, Neo-Classicism, Romanticism and cultural nationalism.

This exploratory article describes (1) the self-reported instructional practices of a group of 103 Kindergarten to Grade 12 French-as-a-second-language (FSL) teachers from school boards across Ontario, Canada before and after intensive and extensive professional learning about the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and (2) the areas of strength and opportunities for improvement in the FSL proficiency of 434 Grade 12 students from school boards across Ontario in their final year of study, as measured through their outcomes on the Diplôme d’études en langue française (the FSL proficiency exam aligned with the CEFR). In looking across the findings from these early-CEFR-adopter teachers and these highly-motivated students at the end of their FSL studies, the article offers a window onto how the CEFR is impacting the local landscape of FSL education in the province.

During the Ancien Régime but also in nineteenth-century Europe, the French language, which occupied a special position in international commerce and diplomacy, develops increasingly into the language of culture and education. The language of the Republic of Letters also serves as the language of contacts and self-expression within European elites. After a rapid survey of studies devoted to this phenomenon, we concentrate on the more specific use of French as a second language in the sphere of private life. All this on the basis of a corpus of partly unpublished material written by people from the Netherlands, Italy, Russia and Turkey. These personal documents (diaries, correspondence, autobiographical texts and alba amicorum) make interesting material enabling us to reach a better understanding of the controversial question of the genesis of expressing one's feelings in texts written in the first person singular. In this context we may distinguish several functions of French. It is not only the language used by the elites but also, due to the influence of French literature, that of the heart, the language of introspection, and paradoxically that of becoming aware of one's national identity.
