Two world wars, the end of empires, the rise and fall of ideologies, the development of international organisation and co-operation – these are but some of the momentous events and changes which have shaped the world and human society in ways unimaginable in 1896, when LSE Library was founded as the British Library of Political Science. In their wake the social sciences and related disciplines have taken new directions and developed new concerns, generating an ever increasing output of literature across the globe. Like no other Library, the collections at LSE record and reflect more than a century of political, social and economic change, offering student and researcher a unique resource for the study and interpretation of past and contemporary societies.

Benchmarking is a “performance comparison tool” aimed at achieving “measurably better performance than the rivals” (Codling, 1998) . In this particular study, benchmarking is interpreted as a collection comparison between a standard selection tool (also called list-checking) and a library’s holdings; and a comparison of holdings in a particular subject area between two libraries. This study aimed to determine how the Libraries recent book acquisitions (those acquired with publication dates 2013 to 2017) in psychology fare with the titles listed in Choice, as well as the holdings of selected ASEAN academic libraries, particularly the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Chulalongkorn University (CU). The two ASEAN libraries were chosen as benchmarks mainly because of the similarities of the programs they offer with that of DLSU. In assessing the quality of the psychology collection, check-listing/benchmarking was conducted. Check-listing involved the checking of Choice title entries in psychology (BF), particularly those published between years 2013 to 2017, against the DLSU Libraries’ holdings. This was done by extracting titles
from Choice and checking the availability of the entries against the DLSU Libraries’ WebOPAC. Similarly, benchmarking, was done by checking the DLSU Libraries’ holdings against the holdings of NTU and CU,
also through their respective WebOPACs. The data collected shows as far as Choice is concerned, the psychology book collection of the DLSU Libraries fell short in terms of quality, having missed out acquiring “essential” titles in the field. Considering that the average age of the psychology collection is now at 42, weeding of outdated books as
well as those that have not circulated in the last ten years should be carried out so the collection is kept fresh and relevant. While the results of the list-checking proved to be quite challenging, the outcomes of the benchmarking, on the contrary, were very encouraging. The fairly high instances of title matches both with NTU and CU confirmed that the selection of psychology titles was done judiciously. As the goal of benchmarking is to perform better than the peers/rivals, the Libraries should strive harder to surpass the collection of the two libraries both in terms of quality and quantity.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to present the current status of digital reference services (DRS) among selected academic libraries in the Philippines – the University Library of the University of the Philippines Diliman, the Rizal Library of the Ateneo de Manila University and the University Library of the De La Salle University Manila – by figuring out how information service is provided using instant messaging (IM) and social networking sites.Design/methodology/approachA survey was conducted to examine the nature, practice and impact of DRS and to ascertain users' preferences and level of awareness of the availability of Ask‐a‐Librarian – an information service offered through IM, and the Facebook fan page of the university libraries under study.FindingsInterestingly, the findings reveal that the full potential of Reference 2.0 has not yet been maximized. In the Philippines, only a few academic and /or research libraries have taken the lead in spearheading library automation. As one of the three leading educational institutions, De La Salle University took on the challenge of charting a strategic course towards a totally automated library environment. This case study attempts to make an assessment of the University Library's computerization planning process, through an analysis of the issues and concerns it had to face in developing an automation program, and concludes with a strategic plan for its implementation and future directions.

The paper examines digitization and preservation initiatives in selected academic and research libraries in the Philippines. It identifies the drivers for the projects, practices followed, and issues encountered. Most of the projects were initiated by the librarians in cooperation with information and communication technology personnel. The selection of the materials for digitization was based on demand, the condition of the print format, and importance of the materials for future use. Conversion into microfilm from digital format, use of Internet mirror sites, and off-site repositories of data on hard disks were some of the preservation methods practiced by libraries. Challenges faced by digital curation activities include the need to develop digital curation skills of information professionals and researchers, and to develop the information infrastructure of the institutions and the country.

This article presents an interesting case study in the development and growth of a Filipiniana Collection in one of the country 's leading academic institutions. The state of the art of De La Salle University Library s collection of Filipiniana, from its early beginnings in 1970 until school year 2000, speaks loudly of the commitment of this institution to contribute to the organization, preservation and use of our cultural heritage as embodied in this unique body of literature.

This study aimed to (1) know how DLSU Libraries is doing compared to its two Southeast Asian contemporaries, the National University of Singapore (NUS) and University of Malaya (UM), in terms of the quality of engineering collection using the recommended titles from Choice: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries (Choice) from 2015-2019; (2) find the status of the acquisition of the Choice recommended list of titles in the DLSU Libraries engineering collection and its two Southeast Asian contemporaries and; (3) trace the usage statistics of the Choice recommended titles acquired for the DLSU engineering collections. The study shows that the NUS ranked first to have the most hits from the Choice recommended list of titles in their collection with 1,084 or 66.34%. DLSU follows with 318 or 19.46% and then UM with 304 or 18.61% of titles. When comparing the top five subjects in Engineering where these libraries have the most collection or acquisition, it is surprising that the three universities share the same top five subjects from the Choice recommended list of titles. There's a pattern of the types of Choice recommended list of titles in all three universities when it comes to acquisition. The bulk of the Choice recommended list of titles of the three universities comes from the recommended titles (REC). The study also found that the three universities differ in the acquisition by publication year of the Choice recommended list of titles for engineering. Usage statistics have shown that the print titles got 1,949 usage or 1.34% from the total engineering book usage of 145,313. Titles from the Outstanding titles (OS) have the highest usage, while REC and Highly Recommended (HR) titles come second and third. Optional Titles (OT) and Essential (ESS) titles also have high usage despite DLSU not having enough purchased titles. Choice titles with the publication year of 2013 and below received high usage statistics, while titles published from the last five years got few.

The research aims to show the importance of the policy of developing and managing library collections in libraries and information centers, regardless of the type of library. The factors that are taken into consideration during the process and development of the collection and it's quality to serve the beneficiaries. These factors include the policies, principles, procedures, and problems associated with the community the library serves. Also, doing the collection evaluation process to find out the benefit of its use, in addition to developing the collections through electronic technologies. The research concluded that many libraries need to pay close attention to the growth and development of their library collections, which enhances the quality of the library and the quality of the services it provides to readers.

Library is defined in various ways based on the perception of the defining authority. To some people, it is a building that houses different collection of books carefully arranged in shelves made available for the target readers. It is seen to others as a medium whereby books and other information materials are systematically collected, arranged, preserved and made accessible to the information user either for free or at a specified cost. Library entails a systematically organized and coordinated platform that provides access to carefully collected, organized, preserved and disseminated information sources and materials available in varying formats and media to various individuals with information needs. The central focus of every library revolves around creating access to quality and relevant information sources to every library user. In order to achieve this, the library is strategically structured and organized in terms of human, material and information resources.

This paper aims to explore the cornucopia of special materials in the National Library of the Philippines’ (NLP) Filipiniana Division (FD) of which has an intrinsic value in the Philippine history and culture. This study employs a descriptive qualitative research design using a structured interview as the main research method, further supplemented by public documents and statistical data from various divisions and sections of the NLP. The diversity of special materials housed in the FD complements the varied needs of the public and mirrors the uniqueness of the Philippine culture. The strength of these materials lies beyond its immense quantity – it is an intellectual jewel of the nation, waiting to be rediscovered by its people. The NLP has a bulk of special materials and dealing with it requires devoted time, restructured knowledge and perseverance which again poses another challenge to be confronted. As what one of the informants said ‘… one lifetime is not enough to organise them all [pertaining to the Philippine Insurgent Records and the Manuel L. Quezon Collection],’ therefore, mechanisms and processes should be clearly defined, recreated, streamlined and implemented in a sustainable manner to resolve the issues.

Library automation stresses the application of Information and Communication Technology to library operations and services. The functions that may automate are cataloging, online public access catalog, circulation, and report generation. The study aimed to assess the library services of academic libraries using automation. This study sought to find out the status of the library automation; the different functions of the systems; and the problems encountered by the academic libraries. The study employed the descriptive survey method that involves the collection of detailed and factual information for catalogers and library clientele, with a researcher made survey questionnaires. Data were validated through the answers of the respondents and the available library records. The results showed that OPAC, Circulation, Cataloging, and Statistical reports are well functioning. In the same manner OPAC considered as the library directory. However, the Circulation maintained the smooth borrowing, and returning of resources. The Cataloging helped the catalogers processed and classified books and other library resources. Moreover, the Statistical records provided the detailed data on the utilization of the library. On the other hand, the study revealed the problems encountered by the academic libraries namely: automation is electricity dependent; regular training for the technical services librarian and staff; constant upgrading of the system; maintenance for the technical support. These contribute to the fast, effective, efficient, and adequate implementation of plans and programs, operations and services of the academic libraries.

Abstract
Using collection mapping and user-centered approach this paper attempts to
answer the following questions: (1) Determine if the IS Libraries’ book collection meets
the Philippine school standards set by the Board for Librarians (BFL) in terms of collection
and growth rate for school library media centers. (2) Know the level of utilization of the IS
Libraries’ book collection. (3) Identify the highly used LC classes and overused/underused
LC classes in the IS Libraries’ book collection. Findings showed that the DLSU IS
Libraries was able to meet the requirements of the Philippine Standard on School Library
and Media Centers in terms of the total number of the collection but needs to update the
collection in terms of books with publication date within the last five years. There is a
need to improve the collection of the following subjects which are below the target growth
rate set by the standard: philosophy, social sciences, applied sciences, geography, travel
and biography, fines arts and recreation, history and the Filipiniana. The number of
circulations for books proved to be high and the utilization is within the acceptable level.
There is a significant number of books with zero usage. There is a predominant subject
area with the most number of checked-out books which are subjects under P-Language,
Literature, and Fiction. Under the sciences, Pure Sciences has the most number of
checkouts. The subject areas with the highest number of titles with zero checkouts are
Pure Sciences, Literature, and Fiction. Usage of books published from the past 20 years
is high. The subject areas which are over-utilized are Fiction, literature and pure sciences
while the subject areas which are underutilized are Literature, Philosophy, and
Languages. Literature appears as the oddity in the study as it registers high circulation
rate, its checkout rate is low when benchmarked against its percentage of expected use
(PEU).

Library management system is a project which aims in developing a computerized
system to maintain all the daily work of library .This project has many features
which are generally not available in normal library management systems like
facility of user login and a facility of teachers login .It also has a facility of admin
login through which the admin can monitor the whole system .It also has facility of
an online notice board where teachers can student can put up information about
workshops or seminars being held in our colleges or nearby colleges and librarian
after proper verification from the concerned institution organizing the seminar can
add it to the notice board . It has also a facility where student after logging in their
accounts can see list of books issued and its issue date and return date and also the
students can request the librarian to add new books by filling the book request
form. The librarian after logging into his account i.e. admin account can generate
various reports such as student report, issue report, teacher report and book report .
Overall this project of ours is being developed to help the students as well as staff
of library to maintain the library in the best way possible and also reduce the
human efforts.

This paper describes the state of the Japanese studies program in the Philippines. The current state of Japanese studies in the Philippines is described in terms of -- institutions with Japanese Studies Program (JSP). Goals and Objectives, Curriculum and Program, Administrative Set-up, Research Areas and Outputs, Profile of Students and Faculty Members, and Library and Instructional Resources. The paper also discusses the issues and responses as well as prospects and visions.

This study compares the curriculum and instruction of the Master in Business Administration (MBA) program of New Era University, De La Salle University, University of the Philippines and Asian Institute of Management. Primarily, the researchers used face-to-face interview method in gathering data. Findings reveals that selected graduate schools of business have common MBA program objectives. The MBA program of New Era University is the youngest, only 20 years old followed by AIM 48 years old, De La Salle 56 years old and UP 100 years old. The inclination of MBA program of NEU and AIM is towards international setting or global studies. New Era University is the only the business school among the selected graduate schools that offers specialized MBA programs and the most affordable while its faculty is at par with the other business schools and utilizing the same mode of instruction. University of the Philippines in Diliman has no bridging or pre-MBA courses. UP has the most number of required core and electives courses and has the most variety of elective courses. De La Salle University has the most number of linkages with foreign-based academic institutions followed by the Asian Institute of Management. NEU may utilize the results of the study to review and strengthen its MBA program in the area of curriculum and instruction. This study only served as a starting point in benchmarking the MBA programs of New Era University with other business schools in the country. Further studies may include other areas for comparative analysis.

This paper provides an overview of Filipiniana rare books and Filipiniana rare books management. It discusses the nature and scope of Filipiniana rare books and by surveying their status in select libraries in the Philippines, this study attempts to draw the state of Filipiniana rare books management in the country. Accordingly, it posts recommendations on how the issues and concerns identified in this study may be addressed.
