For numerous spin crossover complexes, the anisotropic distortion of the first coordination shell around the transition metal center governs the dynamics of the high-spin/lowspin interconversion. However, this structural parameter remains elusive for samples that cannot be investigated with crystallography. The present work demonstrates how picosecond X-ray absorption spectroscopy is able to capture this specific deformation in the photoinduced high-spin state of solvated [Fe(terpy) 2 ] 2+ , a complex which belongs to the prominent family of spin crossover building blocks with nonequivalent metal-ligand bonds. The correlated changes in Fe-N Axial , Fe-N Distal , and bite angle N Distal -Fe-N Axial extracted from the measurements are in very good agreement with those predicted by DFT calculations in D 2d symmetry. The outlined methodology is generally applicable to the characterization of ultrafast nuclear rearrangements around metal centers in photoactive molecular complexes and nanomaterials, including those that do not display long-range order.

In photodynamic therapy (PDT), a noninvasive anticancer treatment, visible light, is used as a magic bullet selectively destroying cancer cells by a photosensitizer that is nontoxic in the dark. Protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) is a natural photosensitizer synthesized in the cell, which is also a chelating agent that if bonded to Fe 2+ forms heme, a central component of hemoglobin. Therefore, xenobiotic iron chelators can disturb iron homeostasis, increasing the accumulation of PpIX, obstructing the last step of heme biosynthesis, and enhancing PDT efficiency. However, the attempts to use this promising idea have not proved to be hugely successful. Herein, we revisited this issue by analyzing the application of iron chelators highly toxic in the dark, which should have higher Fe 2+ affinity than the nontoxic chelators used so far. We have designed and prepared thiosemicarbazones (TSC) with the highest dark cellular cytotoxicity among TSCs ever reported. We demonstrate that compound 2 exerts powerful PDT enhancement when used in combination with 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), a precursor of PpIX.

El presente trabajo plantea la necesidad de volver a la clásica distinción de conocimiento teórico y conocimiento práctico y repensar el lugar de la voluntad y la libertad humanas en el proceso cognoscitivo en general. Desde la consideración de la noción de conciencia, del valor dado a la dimensión cognoscitiva en el ámbito moral, la índole del conocer como relación con lo real y la idea de verdad, llegamos a la conclusión de que el planteamiento racionalista que excluye a la fe como ajena al conocimiento lo hace por el mismo motivo por el que excluye a la voluntad: para evitar la necesidad de tener que decidir.

A set of structural mimics of the [Fe]-hydrogenase active site comprising all the group VIII metals, viz., [M(2-NHC(O)C5H4N)(CO)2(2-S-C5H4N)], has been synthesized. They exist as a mixture of isomers in solution, and the relative stability of the isomers depends on the nature of the metal and the substituent at the 6-position of the pyridine ligand.

Transparent Fe1-xNixOOH overlayers (~2 nm thick) were deposited photoelectrochemically on (001) oriented heteroepitaxial Sn-and Zn-doped hematite (α-Fe2O3) thin film photoanodes. In both cases, the water photo-oxidation performance was improved by the co-catalyst overlayers. Intensity modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS) was applied to study the changes in the hole current and recombination current induced by the overlayers. For the Sn-doped hematite photoanode, the improvement in performance after deposition of the Fe1-xNixOOH overlayer was entirely due to reduction in the recombination current, leading to a cathodic shift in the onset potential. For the Zn-doped hematite photoanode, in addition to a reduction in recombination current, an increase in the hole current to the surface was also observed after the overlayer deposition, leading to a cathodic shift in the onset potential as well as an enhancement in the plateau photocurrent. These results demonstrate that Fe1-xNixOOH cocatalysts can play different roles depending on the underlying hematite photoanode. The effect of the cocatalyst is not always limited to changes in the surface properties, but also to an increase in hole current from the bulk to the surface that indicates a possible crosslink between surface and bulk processes.

La 0.7 K x Ca 0.3−x MnO 3 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1) perovskites were prepared by sol-gel method. The K-doped effect was determined by the structural, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties of the compounds. In the crystal structure of K-doped La 0.7 Ca 0.3 MnO 3 , Mn-O-Mn bond angle slightly increases with K addition. The transition shifts the range of 270-320 K when the K is added in La 0.7 Ca 0.3 MnO 3. The Curie temperature increases from 251 to 288 K with increasing K amount. The maximum magnetic entropy change was found to be 2.7 J kg −1 K −1 at 283 K under a magnetic field change of 2 T for the La 0.7 K 0.05 Ca 0.25 MnO 3. The relative cooling powers (RCPs) in the La 0.7 K x Ca 0.3−x MnO 3 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1) samples were calculated to be 103, 133 and 88 J kg −1 , respectively.

Deactivation was investigated in Fe 2 O 3-CeO 2 oxygen storage materials during repeated H 2reduction and CO 2-reoxidation. In situ XRD, XAS and TEM were used to identify phases, crystallite sizes and morphological changes upon cycling operation. The effect of redox cycling was investigated both in Fe-rich (80wt% Fe 2 O 3-CeO 2) and Ce-rich (10wt%Fe 2 O 3-CeO 2) materials. The former consisted of 100nm Fe 2 O 3 particles decorated with 5-10nm Ce 1-x Fe x O 2-x. The latter presented CeO 2 with incorporated Fe, i.e. a solid solution of Ce 1-x Fe x O 2-x , as main Page 1 of 40 ACS Paragon Plus Environment Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research 2 oxygen carrier. By modelling the EXAFS Ce-K signal for as prepared 10wt%Fe 2 O 3-CeO 2 , the amount of Fe in CeO 2 was determined as 21mol%, corresponding to 86% of the total iron content. Sintering and solid-solid transformations, the latter including both new phase formation and element segregation, were identified as deactivation pathways upon redox cycling. In Cerich material, perovskite (CeFeO 3) was identified by XRD. This phase remained inert during reduction and reoxidation, resulting in an overall lower oxygen storage capacity. Further, Fe segregated from the solid solution, thereby decreasing its reducibility. In addition, an increase in crystallite size occurred for all phases. In Fe-rich material, sintering is the main deactivation pathway, although Fe segregation from the solid solution and perovskite formation cannot be excluded.

We propose a new method to solve the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations for weakly bound nuclei whose purpose is to improve the treatment of the continuum when a finite range two-body interaction is used. We replace the traditional expansion on a discrete harmonic oscillator basis by a mixed eigenfunction expansion associated with a potential that explicitely includes a continuous spectrum. We overcome the problem of continuous spectrum discretization by using a resonance expansion.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) nanoparticles with narrow size distribution were prepared in organic dispersant media in the presence of both iron(III) dodecylbenzenesulfonate {Fe(DBS)3}-acting as both an oxidant and a stabilizer-and ω-functionalized polyisoprenes (ω-R-PI) as costabilizers. The effects of the solvent nature and concentration of Fe(DBS)3 on the size and morphology of the PEDOT particles were first studied in the absence of costabilizer. Second, the effects of the molar mass, concentration, and nature of the functional end group of the polyisoprene costabilizer were investigated. PEDOT nano-objects were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and conductivity measurements.

The crystallographic and magnetic properties of Mn0.98Fe0.02CoGe have been investigated by X-ray diffraction, dc magnetization and neutron diffraction over the temperature range 20-450 K. The temperature dependence of the phase fractions of the orthorhombic and hexagonal phases is described well by a Gaussian distribution. The Mn0.98Fe0.02CoGe sample exhibits a first-order magneto-structural transition centred at TMS ∼ 297 K of FWHM ∼37 K with a magnetic entropy change of -ΔSM = 24(1) J kg-1 K-1 for ΔB = 0-5 T. Neutron diffraction indicates a ferromagnetic orthorhombic structure below TMS with only the Mn carrying magnetic moment (3.98( ) µB) at 20 K. The sample is paramagnetic in the hexagonal phase above TMS.

This study suggests a micromechanical approach to scrutinize the glass fiber reinforced polyester (GFRP) composite tribological behavior. A single indenter scratch test (SST) using spherical tip conical indenter was adopted. The 3D finite element (FE) model was developed into ABAQUS/Explicit commercial code. Both material behavior and damage of polyester matrix and glass fiber was modeled using the Johnson Cook behavior law. Nevertheless, the fiber/matrix interface behavior is described using the cohesive zone approach via the cohesive elements. The effects of Aldrich humic acids (HA) on the removal of Zero-valent iron (ZVI) was investigated in laboratory systems. In batch, the removal rate of Zn and Ni (5 mg l À1) was, respectively, 2.8 and 2.4 times lower in the presence of HA (20 mg l À1) than in the absence of HA, presumably due to the formation of HA-heavy metal complexes which prevented the removal reactions at the ZVI surface. Chromate removal was not affected. In a column test, two parallel systems were supplemented with a continuous input of simulated groundwater containing a mixture of the heavy metals Zn, Ni and Cr(VI) (5 mg l À1 each), with or without HA (at 20 mg l À1). Initially, the two column systems efficiently (490%) removed the heavy metals from the simulated groundwater. When the input heavy metal concentration was increased to 8-10 mg l À1 , a significant breakthrough of Ni and Zn, up to 80%, occurred in the column system fed with HA. Chromate and HA did not significantly break through. After 60 weeks, the effect of HA on leaching of the accumulated metals (approx. 2 mg g À1) was investigated. No significant leaching was observed. The results of this study suggest that the impact of dissolved organic matter on the efficiency and lifetime of a ZVI barrier for in situ removal of heavy metals should be considered in the design of the barrier.

The reaction of HOR' (OR' = di-t-butyl-(3,5-diphenylphenyl)methoxide) with an iron(II) amide precursor forms the iron(II) bis(alkoxide) complex Fe(OR')(THF) (2). 2 (5-10 mol %) serves as a catalyst for the conversion of aryl azides into the corresponding azoarenes. The highest yields are observed for aryl azides featuring two ortho substituents; other substitution patterns in the aryl azide precursor lead to moderate or low yields. The reaction of 2 with stoichiometric amounts (2 equiv) of the corresponding aryl azide shows the formation of azoarenes as the only organic products for the bulkier aryl azides (Ar = mesityl, 2,6-diethylphenyl). In contrast, formation of tetrazene complexes Fe(OR')(ArNNNNAr) (3-6) is observed for the less bulky aryl azides (Ar = phenyl, 4-methylphenyl, 4-methoxyphenyl, 3,5-dimethylphenyl). The electronic and magnetic properties of different kinds of adsorbates on thin magnetized Fe(100) films have been investigated by means of spin resolving photoelectron spectroscopy. The study has been carried out with atomically physisorbed xenon, the molecule carbon monoxide, and metallic gold. The spin splitting of the Xe 5p signal can be explained by magnetic interactions with the final ionic hole state. By spin analysis, it could be shown that at room temperature for low exposures the adsorption of CO is dissociative and with increasing exposure additionally molecular. The Au related features for the monolayer show different line shapes in both spin channels but no splittings due to an sp-like behavior of this interface state being dominated by minority character.

Investigations of the electronic and magnetic properties of oxygen adsorbed on magnetized iron films have been carried out by means of angle and spin resolving photoelectron spectroscopy. Iron, epitaxially grown on W(100) and W(ll0) crystals, served as the ferromagnetic substrate. Exchange splittings of the O 2p~ derived level have been detected, demonstrating a magnetic coupling between the chemisorbate and the iron layer. Variations of the exchange splitting have occurred as a function of the oxygen coverage, photon energy, and emission angle. High oxygen exposures have lead to a FeO overlayer at the surface.

The grains of the oxide-metal composite particles are uniformly covered by a weblike network of carbon nanotube bundles, several tens of micrometers long, made up of single-wall nanotubes with a diameter close to 4 nm. Only the smallest metal particles (, 5 nm) are involved in the formation of the nanotubes. A macroscopic characterization method involving surface area measurements and chemical analysis has been developed in order to compare the different nanotube specimens. An increase in the transition metal content of the catalyst yields more carbon nanotubes (up to a metal content of 10.0 wt% or x 0.3), but causes a decrease in carbon quality. The best compromise is to use 6.7 wt% of metal (x 0.2) in the catalyst. Co gives superior results with respect to both the quantity and quality of the nanotubes. In the case of Fe, the quality is notably hampered by the formation of Fe 3 C particles.

With the goal to produce molecules with high electron accepting capacity and low reorganization energy upon gaining one or more electrons, a synthesis procedure leading to the formation of a B-N(aromatic) bond in a cluster has been developed. The research was focused on the development of a molecular structure able to accept and release a specific number of electrons without decomposing or change in its structural arrangement. The synthetic procedure consists of a parallel decomposition reaction to generate a reactive electrophile and a synthesis reaction to generate the B-N(aromatic) bond. This procedure has paved the way to produce the metallacarboranylviologen [M(CBH)(CBH)-NCH-CHN-M'(CBH)(CBH)] (M = M' = Co, Fe and M = Co and M' = Fe) and semi(metallacarboranyl)viologen [3,3'-M(8-(NCH-CHN-1,2-CBH)(1',2'-CBH)] (M = Co, Fe) electron cumulative molecules. Being neither commutative nor associative, Einstein velocity addition of relativistically admissible velocities gives rise to gyrations. Gyrations, in turn, measure the extent to which Einstein addition deviates from commutativity and from associativity. Gyrations are geometric automorphisms abstracted from the relativistic mechanical effect known as Thomas precession. Thomas precession is a peculiar special relativistic space rotation that stems from Einstein velocity addition so that, in turn, Einstein velocity addition is algebraically and geometrically regulated by Thomas precession. Gyrations give rise to gyroalgebra and gyrogeometry, elegant nonassociative algebra and geometry in which groups and vector spaces become gyrogroups and gyrovector spaces and Euclidean geometry becomes hyperbolic geometry. Indeed, gyrovector spaces form the algebraic setting for the hyperbolic geometry of Bolyai and Lobachevsky just as vector spaces form the algebraic setting for Euclidean geometry. As such, gyrations provide the missing link between Einstein's special theory of relativity and the hyperbolic geometry of Bolyai and Lobachevsky.

Many heme-containing proteins with a histidine in the distal E7 (HisE7) position can form sulfheme in the presence of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and a reactive oxygen species such as hydrogen peroxide. For reasons unknown, sulfheme derivatives are formed specifically on the solvent-excluded heme pyrrole B. Sulfhemes severely decrease oxygen binding affinity in hemoglobin (Hb) and myoglobin (Mb). Here, use of hybrid Quantum Mechanical/Molecular Mechanical (QM/MM) methods has permitted characterization of the entire process of sulfheme formation in the HisE7 mutant of hemoglobin I (HbI) from Lucina pectinata. This process includes a mechanism for H2S to enter the solvent excluded active site through a hydrophobic channel to ultimately form a hydrogen bond with H2O2 bound to Fe(III). In an attempt to improve the properties, lightweight aggregates were produced from clay with the addition of Na 2 CO 3 , SiO 2 , Fe 2 O 3 , and Fe in quantities between 2 and 10 wt% and examined with respect to strength, density and expansion behaviour. The additives were mixed into dry clay powder, water was added and pellets were formed by hand and fired at 1120°C in a chamber furnace. Particle densities of the products ranged from 0.31-0.57 g/cm 3 , porosities from 78-89% and the solid strength from 0,54-1,58 MPa. The addition of Na 2 CO 3 proved to decrease the viscosity of the glass phase at the surface of the pellets but resulted in a reduced expansion, irregular shape and pellets sticking together. SiO 2 addition did not give any major change in properties. The addition of Fe 2 O 3 increased the pore size in the centre of the pellets, however with insignificant change in strength and density. Adding 5 wt% metallic iron powder led to LWA pellets with increased porosity, reduced density, larger pores and low mechanical strength and could be an useful additive in applications where low density is more important than strength.

We have employed density functional theory calculations to analyze the possible tautomerization of phenol mediated by three diff erent Lewis acid sites at the external (10) surface of zeolite MFI. A silicon atom of the silanol group was substituted by Sc, Fe, and Ga metal atoms, which adopted a formal charge of 3+. This substituted silanol was dehydrated in order to form three-coordinated Lewis acid sites. The tautomerization of phenol involves the adsorption of the molecule on the Lewis site, the dissociation of the phenolic O−H bond and the transfer of the proton to the zeolite framework. This proton is transferred from the zeolite to the C atom at ortho positions to the phenolic O atom, thus generating the tautomer. The acidity of the substituted Lewis sites follows a strength order of Ga < Fe < Sc, where the Sc substitution provides the lowest energy barriers: 33 kJ/mol for the dissociation of the O−H bond, and 32 kJ/mol for the formation of the C−H bond, calculated with the GGA functional PBE including Grimme's dispersion corrections. We observed that the GGA functional PBE produces binding energies and energy barriers with a diff erence of less than 13 kJ/mol compared to the meta-GGA TPSS and rev-TPSS and the hybrid-GGA HSE06.

A method for discriminating between α-chiral primary amine enantiomers is reported. The method utilizes circular dichroism spectroscopy and a sensing ensemble composed of 2-formyl-3-hydroxyl pyridine (4) and Fe(II)(TfO) 2 . Aldehyde 4 reacts rapidly with chiral amines to form chiral imines, which complex Fe(II) to form a series of diastereomeric octahedral complexes that are CD active in both the UV and visible spectrum. NMR studies showed that, for enantiomerically pure imine complexes, the Δ-fac isomer is preferred. A statistical analysis of the distribution of stereoisomers accurately models the calibration curves for enantiomeric excess. CD signals appearing in the UV region were bisignate, and the null of the CD signals were coincident with maxima in the UV spectrum, consistent with exciton coupling. TTDFT and semi-empirical calculations confirmed that the CD signals in the UV region arise from coupling of the π-π* transitions in the imine chromophores, and can be used to accurately describe the sign and magnitudes of the curves. The CD signals in the visible region arise from metal-to-ligand charge transfer bands, and these signals can be used to determine the ee values of chiral amines with an average absolute error of ±5%. Overall, the strategy presented herein represents a facile in situ assembly that uses commercially available simple reagents to create large optical signals indicative of ee values.

Malaria-induced acute kidney injury (MAKI) is a life-threatening complication of severe malaria. Here, we investigated the potential role of the angiotensin II (Ang II)/AT1 receptor pathway in the development of MAKI. We used C57BL/6 mice infected by Plasmodium berghei ANKA (PbA-infected mice), a well-known murine model of severe malaria. The animals were treated with 20 mg/kg/day losartan, an antagonist of AT1 receptor, or captopril, an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor. We observed an increase in the levels of plasma creatinine and blood urea nitrogen associated with a significant decrease in creatinine clearance, a marker of glomerular flow rate, and glomerular hypercellularity, indicating glomerular injury.
