This paper examines how people living apart together (LATs) maintain their relationships, and describes how they view this living arrangement. It draws on a 2011 survey on living apart together (LAT) in Britain, supplemented by qualitative interviewing. Most LATs in Britain live near to their partners, and have frequent contact with them. At the same time most see LAT in terms of a monogamous, committed couple, where marriage remains a strong normative reference point, and see living apart as not much different from co-residence in terms of risk, emotional security, or closeness. Many see themselves living together in the future. However, LAT does appear to make difference to patterns of care between partners. In addition, LATs report advantages in terms of autonomy and flexibility. The paper concludes that LAT allows individuals some freedom to manoeuvre in balancing the demands of life circumstances and personal needs with those of an intimate relationship, but that practices of living apart together do not, in general, represent a radical departure from the norms of contemporary coupledom, except for that which expects couples to cohabit.

This paper focuses on a proliferating narrative genre: videos where children are central, posted on the internet for public consumption. The video analyzed is of a pre-school U.S. Black girl resisting how her mother has combed her hair. It offers insights into family practices and display (Finch, 2007; Morgan, 2011) that would usually not be open to scrutiny and cannot be captured in the same way in interviews. The paper argues that the videoed narrative can only be understood if the sociocultural context of racism and contestation over the denigration of Black girls’ and women’s Afro hair is analyzed.

Popular discourse continues to equate 'good' motherhood with middle class, heterosexual coupledom and lone motherhood with dysfunctionality, despite ever-increasing diversity in family life. Drawing on interviews with lone mothers in two locations in the north of England, this article introduces the concept of 'good lone motherhood' to capture a process whereby women internalise nuclear family ideology while simultaneously resisting stigma and taking pride in their achievements in fulfilling practical and emotional demands of lone parenting. Application of a family practices framework is expanded through insights into what 'doing' good lone motherhood entails in everyday life and how it is 'displayed' to different audiences. Taking a comparative approach involving women in areas with contrasting socioeconomic profiles highlights the contextual nature of display. Analysis of agential reflexivity and structural constraints demonstrates ways in which gender and class disadvantages can undermine capacity to 'successfully' convey a positive maternal identity.

The family is increasingly a site of political intervention as a locus of pervasive social inequalities and a potential resource for resolving injustices. Contemporary political theory has engaged in extensive debate about what justice in the family requires, but rather less on how family is understood: ethicists have tended to use placeholder definitions which dismiss the need to engage with real-world practices. We show that this is problematic because it obscures morally important aspects of day to day family life and risks taking privileged positions as representative. The paper proposes that theorists could gain from adopting the sociological ‘family practice’ framework, which we argue can form the basis of a distinct and plausible ethical theory of family. This can provide a fruitful basis for further research and engagement in political debate because it better conceptualizes contemporary family life. Children living in geographically rural areas may have limited access to early, intensive evidence-based interventions suggesting children residing in these areas are less likely to experience positive outcomes than their urban-dwelling peers.  Telehealth offers an option to rural families seeking early intervention by using communication technologies where providers are able to consult and deliver services in real-time over geographical distances. To our knowledge, no other study has examined the implementation of P-ESDM in rural natural environments within the framework of the state’s early intervention program. Prvi nivo porodične dinamike, porodično polje, obuhvata pitanja odnosa između porodica različitog društvenog položaja, dok drugi nivo porodične dinamike, porodični prostor, obuhvata pitanja unutarporodičnih odnosa. Drawing on Morgan’s conceptualization of family practices, the paper investigates the relationship between joint child custody arrangements and everyday post-separation co-parenting activities and routines. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 40 separated mothers and fathers in Italy, 14 of whom are former partners. Interviewees are mainly dual-earner, heterosexual, and have children under 10 years old. From a life course perspective, post-separation practices highlight the relevance of ongoing everyday transformations and agency along post-separation life trajectories and events such as the presence of new partners or changes in working conditions. Post-separation co-parenting differ in two main dimensions: how activities and responsibilities for the child(ren) are shared, and co- parenting practices. On this basis, three main post-separation parenting styles can be identified: “parallel”, “cooperative” and “competitive” co-parenting. Though the three styles can be distinguished at the analytical level, they tend to lie along a continuum. They may change over time or even become more similar in long-lasting post-separation parenting practices. Gendered expectations around the meanings and sharing of parental responsibilities tend to persist and vary according to these co-parenting styles only to some extent. The results are of interest in a context such as Italy, with persistent gender asymmetries. These findings suggest theoretical implications for the creative role of the family practices framework in going beyond “good divorce” functionalist approaches.

Desde la Teoría de la Autodeterminación, el estudio tuvo como objetivo analizar la relación entre el estilo motivacional del docente percibido por el estudiante (apoyo a la autonomía y control), los tipos de motivación (autónoma y controlada), las emociones académicas (disfrute y ansiedad) y el rendimiento académico en matemáticas, en 269 estudiantes de 5to y 9no grado de dos escuelas privadas de Lima. También estudió las diferencias en el estilo motivacional, los tipos de motivación y las emociones académicas en ambos grados de estudio. Adicionalmente, se analizaron las propiedades psicométricas de los instrumentos y se halló evidencia adecuada de validez y confiabilidad. Over the past decades, the ways in which children’s care is arranged after parental separation have changed significantly in many societies. Dual residence, where children live across two households spending equal amounts of time with each parent, is particularly common in Sweden. Despite the dramatic increase in dual residence in Sweden, knowledge from children’s point of view is limited. This thesis aims, through children’s perspectives, to provide knowledge about everyday life when lived across two households, with a special focus on family practices, influence and personal relationships. The thesis draws on qualitative interviews with children and teenagers, whose stories, descriptions and reflections have been analysed using thematic analysis. El objetivo del estudio consistió en relacionar la motivación con el rendimiento académico en matemáticas en escolares del norte de Colombia, a través del uso del coeficiente de correlación de Pearson, aplicando el cuestionario de evaluación motivacional del proceso de aprendizaje (EMPA), para establecer los niveles de motivación extrínseca e intrínseca de los 65 estudiantes pertenecientes a la muestra. El rendimiento académico se obtuvo a través de información de segunda fuente, suministrada por la coordinación académica de la institución objeto de estudio, y se utilizó un enfoque cuantitativo y correlacional. Los resultados demuestran que existe una correlación significativa negativa en las dimensiones de la motivación intrínseca y extrínseca, con el rendimiento académico. Ante esto se proponen nuevas líneas de investigación, especialmente, el acompañamiento por parte de los padres y o acudientes, y las características socioeconómicas y su relación para con la motivación académica.

Fathering practices are changing. Many fathers are no longer simply providers but are also active caregivers. While women’s entry into the labour market spurred a need for men to engage with the ‘second shift’, research has showed that men’s engagement with childcare does not necessarily imply an equal division of labour. By examining the construction of father’s identity in a context where traditional scripts for ‘doing family’ cannot (easily) be applied, this article discusses how necessity affects practices of involved fathering and the sharing of responsibilities. François de Singly aborda os mecanismos pelos quais ocorre a apropriação da herança cultural, e, para isso, aproxima-se dos indivíduos, a fim de introduzir a noção de mobilização. Para o autor, o herdeiro tem de preencher duas demandas contraditórias da modernidade para reconhecer-se como herdeiro. Nesse sentido, os movimentos de desfiliação e de resgate da filiação são cruciais para que os filhos se tranquilizem na construção de uma identidade autônoma. Em relação ao gosto pela leitura, isso ocorre a partir de um distanciamento dos gostos da geração precedente e de uma crítica a eles, sobretudo em se tratando daqueles da mãe. Por fim, o autor demonstra que os herdeiros submetem-se a um duplo vínculo que oscila entre a obediência e a espontaneidade, em um movimento de transação entre gerações. Varios estudios han comprobado que la calidad del ambiente del hogar tiene efectos en el desempeño de niñas y niños. Por ejemplo, se ha reportado que los niños que más se involucran en actividades lúdicas con contenido numérico suelen tener mejor rendimiento en el área de las matemáticas. En este estudio participaron 37 díadas madre-hijo que asistían a un centro educativo de educación preescolar. Se recogieron datos sobre la frecuencia de realización de actividades numéricas en el hogar, nivel socioeconómico y expectativas y actitudes de los padres hacia la matemática. Se evaluaron las habilidades matemáticas de los/as niños/as y la capacidad de estimación no simbólica. Los resultados muestran una correlación positiva significativa entre la frecuencia de realización de actividades numéricas en el hogar y el desempeño matemático de los niños. Se discuten posibles influencias del nivel socioeconómico y de la capacidad de estimación de los niños.

The culture of a country may influence parental involvement in a student's learning, making it more or less adequate. To test this possibility, this study analyzes the cross-cultural validity of the learning-oriented Family Motivational Climate model (FMC) as an index of parental involvement in students' academic job and the FMC questionnaire (FMC-Q), as a way of operationalizing it. A total of 583 Spanish and 448 Cuban students filled in the FMC-Q and the questionnaire of perceived motivational changes resulting from parental practices. Confirmatory, cross-validation, and multi-group factor analyses revealed that the model showed a good fit to the data, both in the Spanish and in the Cuban samples. Besides, FMC predicted the 74% of the variance of students' motivational change. Esta investigación aporta datos sobre la motivación en edades tempranas y su impacto sobre el rendimiento matemático, incluyendo a la familia como agente educativo esencial. Se obtuvo una muestra de 127 alumnos de 1º de Educación Primaria y sus progenitores. Se evaluó el rendimiento de los estudiantes y sus diferentes tipos de motivación (intrínseca, identificada y controlada), las prácticas matemáticas formales e informales en el hogar y la importancia percibida respecto a ese contenido. Los datos sugieren que los alumnos distinguen especialmente las formas de motivación más autodeterminadas (intrínseca e identificada). La motivación identificada guarda una relación significativa con el rendimiento matemático. La importancia percibida de los padres respecto a las matemáticas predice el desarrollo de una motivación intrínseca hacia dicho contenido, mientras que la práctica formal predice el desarrollo de una preocupante motivación controlada. En cuanto al rendimiento, encontramos una relación significativa negativa con las prácticas informales del hogar.

The present study offers data on motivation at early ages and its impact on math achievement, including family as an essential educational agent. The sample consisted of 127 first grade students and their parents. Students’ achievement and their different types of motivation (intrinsic, identified, and controlled) were assessed, as well as math formal and informal practices at home and perceived importance of that content. Results suggest that students differentiate better the more self-determined types of motivation (intrinsic and identified). Identified motivation is significantly correlated to math achievement. Parents’ perceived importance towards math promotes the development of an intrinsic motivation for that content, while formal practices at home are related to the development of a controlled motivation. Finally, a significant negative relation is found between achievement and informal practices at home.

No presente trabalho, quisemos investigar que fatores mais contribuem para o sucesso escolar de pessoas que realizaram trajetos escolares longos, e cujos pais fizeram um percurso escolar muito mais curto, ou seja, pessoas que realizaram trajetos de contratendência ascendente. Com este objetivo, entrevistámos 10 pessoas que detêm um curso superior e cujos pais completaram uma escolaridade inferior ao 9º ano atual. Recolhemos dos entrevistados informações sobre fatores relacionados com o trajeto escolar, o contexto familiar e as redes de sociabilidade dos entrevistados. Concluímos que alguns dos fatores mais importantes são as relações positivas com professores, funcionários e colegas. Concluímos também que foram muito importantes as práticas familiares que favorecem o sucesso escolar, principalmente as práticas de leitura e escrita, e também o incentivo à leitura por parte dos pais. Tiveram igualmente importância a participação em atividades extracurriculares e as redes de sociabilidade dos estudantes, que incluíram pessoas de famílias mais favorecidas socialmente, desempenhando o papel de apoio ou de fontes de informação relevantes.

Neste artigo averigua-se a relação entre o desempenho dos alunos na disciplina de História e sua origem social familiar. Com base no conceito de capital cultural, analisa-se a desigualdade entre o desempenho escolar, relacionando “sucesso escolar” à distribuição do capital cultural entre as
classes. Com dados coletados por meio de questionários e entrevistas, e com base no desempenho dos alunos na disciplina História, o modo de transmissão desse capital
cultural familiar foi investigado com o objetivo de observar se, apesar de sua presença objetiva, ele está em condições de ser
transmitido pelos pais à criança, de modo que ela o reverta em práticas escolares positivas para um bom desempenho em História. A análise aponta para a existência de uma relação entre as práticas culturais familiares e o desempenho dos alunos na disciplina – entre os alunos que têm melhores notas,
observou-se a existência de estratégias familiares, maior acesso a bens culturais e uma maior proximidade com o texto escrito.

O mundo escolar encontra-se frequentemente associado a binarismos conceptuais, muitas vezes redutores. Tal é o caso da parelha de conceitos sucesso/insucesso escolar, estritamente associada ao cumprimento de requisitos institucionais de desempenho académico e comportamental. Esta abordagem é, a nosso ver, limitada, pois impede de captar outras dimensões que subjazem ao processo de construção da trajetória escolar enquanto elemento cada vez mais central da construção biográfica.
