Early Modern Popular Culture

The variants of the song analyzed in this paper have persisted in Hungarian popular poetry (manuscript songbooks) and folklore from the 1710s to the present day. The song, composed after the fall of Ferenc Rákóczi II’s War of Independence (1703–1711), expresses the grievances of soldiers regarding public order. Despite their heroism and victories, they were not appropriately honored by their noble officers, which facilitated the Habsburgs’ ability to suppress the revolt. Nearly all variants of the song criticize the arrogant Hungarian nobility for their delusions. Later versions of the song transcend the Kuruc era, addressing soldiers’ experiences more broadly across different historical periods. It was sung by Hungarian soldiers fighting against Napoleon and other adversaries, as well as in the context of conflicts with outlaws. Starting in the mid-19th century, the rise of “Kuruc romanticism” imbued this popular song type with renewed significance, leading new written versions to be perceived by the public as “original.” The Tyukodi Song (Te vagy a legény, Tyukodi pajtás – ‘You are the guy, our pal Tyukodi’) stands as one of the most renowned examples. It can be regarded both as an authentic relic and as a counterfeit, reflecting its dual role in Hungary’s cultural memory.

Badke is a performance which combines the dance forms of dabke; a traditional Palestinian folk dance with the diverse urban styles. Beyond of any arguments about Palestinian culture and western audience's Eurocentral perception which may cause a complex issue in the representation or else, the mixed style which is pretended to be 'just a feel-good performance', Badke reveals many layers as it is unfolded on the stage. The aim of this article is to analyse how Badke manages an ethnography of Palestinian culture, specifically the festivities with the dance medium. While that mixed dance style is constructed to transfer not simply the structure but also the emotions of the festivities; joy and madness, it prevents to fall from an ethnographic dance into the commodification of a Palestinian culture. Moreover, the performance catches an intersection of heterotopia between its content; the festivities and its format; the stage. Finally, while it associates the ethnic elements with modern dance, hip hop, circus and capoeira that the westerner spectator is familiar, it creates a dialogue between the stranger (other) and familiar (common).

En 1971, Natalie Zemon Davis publicó un artículo crucial en las páginas de Past and Present, titulado "The Reasons of Misrule: Youth Groups and Charivaris in Sixteenth-Century France" 1. Siendo este un estudio de los rituales carnavalescos de burla, a través de los cuales las comunidades manifestaban su desaprobación ante infracciones sociales y morales, el ensayo abrió un umbral revelador sobre las costumbres festivas mediante las cuales los hombres jóvenes y solteros humillaban y regulaban públicamente el comportamiento sexual y marital de sus vecinos. Asimismo, esto demostraba la transmutación de aquellos ritos lúdicos, desarrollados en ambientes urbanos, en vehículos para la protesta social y política. Un año después, un escrito sobre la contraparte inglesa del charivari, comúnmente conocida como rough music 2 o skimmington ride 3 , apareció en las páginas de Annales. 4 Escrito por Edward Thompson, el historiador líder del ala izquierda y miembro fundador de esta revista, también examinaba la función social de la práctica del desfile de transgresores acompañado por el golpeteo cacofónico de cacerolas y sartenes. Así se iluminaba el rol de este tipo de teatro callejero de plebeyos que operaba, conforme a las normas aceptadas, como una forma de dar a conocer escándalos y criticar a las figuras de autoridad poco populares, haciendo hincapié en el carácter casi judicial del ritual.

Książka oceniana jest jako jedna z najlepszych prac na tytułowy temat, a wagę publikacji dodaje fakt, że na polskim rynku dostępnych książek poruszających podobne zagadnienia jest naprawdę niewiele (jak podaje w posłowiu B. Dziemidok, praca Kulki jest piątą monografią w Polsce obok publikacji takich osób, jak: A. Banach, P. Beylin, A. Moles, H. Broch). Wydaje się, że jest to specyfika tego tematu. Sam autor zauważa, że kiczem zajmowali się dotąd raczej historycy, socjologowie, pisarze czy krytycy sztuki, a nie estetycy. Anonsowana publikacja, wypełniająca istniejącą lukę, przełożona została do tej pory na 17 języków. Jej autor jest aktualnie profesorem i wykładowcą w Katedrze Estetyki Uniwersytetu Karola w Pradze i pozostaje czołową postacią współczesnej myśli estetycznej. Omawiając myśl tego kręgu kulturowego, nie sposób nie odwołać się na początku do dorobku M. Kundery. Lektura pokazuje, że trop taki okazuje się w pełni zasadny -nazwisko pisarza przywołane jest przez Kulkę kilkakrotnie, także na samym wstępie publikacji: "...jak nas ostrzega (...) M. Kundera -nikt z nas nie jest całkowicie odporny na kicz" 1 . Pozornie błaha, jednozdaniowa uwaga nadaje rozważaniom praskiego profesora właściwą im perspektywę. Kwestią wyjściową nie będzie tu więc zdroworozsądkowo narzucająca się kwestia powinowactwa kiczu i domniemanego złego gustu "artysty" bądź użytkowników, lecz raczej nasza fundamentalna podatność na to zjawisko, a co za tym idzie -powszechność kiczu. IN 1633 FRANCIS QUARLES published a disdainful epigram
about the connection between ‘Players’ and ‘Ballad-Mungers’ –
traders of ballads – and their products. ‘Our merry Ballads, and
lascivious Playes / Are much alike’, he maintained; ‘T’one sings;
the other sayes; / And both are Fripp’ries of anothers Froth’.
According to Quarles, then, not only are plays and ballads
closely connected: each is the flourish on the other.1 Plays and
ballads, implies Quarles, at the least require one another; and
perhaps even, sometimes, bring one another about.
This lecture is about interrelationships between ballads and
plays; frippery and froth. It is in three parts. The first considers
ballads used, and sometimes authored, by two representative
playwrights, Ben Jonson and William Shakespeare.
The second part is on the ballad-jigs and ballad-‘themes’ performed
when plays were over, promoted and maybe authored
by clowns. The third concerns the place where theatre ballads
were sold and by whom: outside playhouses and by ‘outsiders’
from society. And, as the ballads ‘outside’ plays seem to have
consisted of the ‘within’- and ‘after’-play ballads, this lecture
asks where conceptually, physically, and geographically plays
stop and ballads start; to what extent ballads are crucial paratexts
to performed plays and vice versa; and what play-ballads
can contribute to our understanding of authorship, on the one
hand, and genre on the other.

This paper explores how the lower classes voice discontent or political dissent in an acceptable balance between insubordination and formal respect of authority in three early modern texts written between the 1590s and the first decade of the 17 th century. The plays under analysis are The Life of Jack Straw and Thomas of Woodstock (both anonymous) and Shakespeare's Richard II, which all deal with the same sovereign and his reign, characterised by three main crises. Despite their distinct approaches, they all address political grievances and present their own interpretations of monarchy, political power and the role of kingship. The comparison shows interesting shifts in the vision of the commonwealth and in the perception of power in a clear progression towards radicalisation in the criticism of the king, which leads to the later Civil War.

W tekście omawiana jest historia niemieckiego teatru Thalia w Łodzi oraz jego miejsce w szerszym kontekście przemysłu operetkowego początku XX wieku. Autorka zwraca uwagę na wyzwania, z jakimi musiała zmierzyć się Thalia jako teatr działający na prowincji, w którym chciano grywać ten sam nowoczesny repertuar, co w europejskich metropoliach. Spełnienie tych ambicji było trudne między innymi ze względu na spadającą frekwencję i problem z dłuższym utrzymaniem tytułów w repertuarze a w konsekwencji także trudności finansowe. Teatrowi nie pomagał także sceptycyzm recenzentów – ci postrzegali modne na europejskich scenach operetki jedynie jako chwilową sensację. Tymczasem operetki nie tylko oferowały ucieczkę od rzeczywistości, ale także subtelnie komentowały problemy społeczne i polityczne, co sprawiało, że były nośnikiem polityki kulturowej epoki. Mimo swojej komercyjnej natury, nowoczesna operetka miała głębszy wpływ na kształtowanie się społeczeństw i była wyrazem masowej tożsamości. W tym sensie mogła wpływać na rozwój nowoczesnych społeczeństw także społeczeństwa Łodzi, które w przededniu I wojny światowej próbowało naśladować styl życia w zachodnich metropoliach.

This article discusses the history of the German Thalia theatre in Łódź and its place in the wider context of the operetta industry of the early 20th century. The author draws attention to the challenges the Thalia had to face as a theatre operating in the provinces, which wanted to play the same modern repertoire as in European metropolises. It was difficult to fulfil these ambitions, among other things, due to falling attendance and the problem of keeping titles in the repertoire for longer and, consequently, financial difficulties. The theatre was also not helped by the scepticism of reviewers, who saw the operettas fashionable on European stages only as a temporary sensation. Meanwhile, operettas

not only offered an escape from reality, but also subtly commented on social and political problems, making them a vehicle for the cultural politics of the era. Despite its commercial nature, the modern operetta had a deeper impact on the formation of societies and was an expression of mass identity. In this sense, it may have influenced the development of modern societies, including that of Lodz, which, on the eve of the First World War, tried to emulate the lifestyle of Western metropolises.

The paper presents information about a reissue of Postępek prawa czartowskiego (The Trial of the Devil’s Law), an anonymous early printed book attributed to Sebastian Sternacki’s printing shop, dated approximately 1619, and omitted from scholarly editing until now. Due to physical damage to the unique copy of editio princeps (Brest-Litovsk 1570), the existing state of art is incomplete, and reference to the early 17th c. full-text edition allows to fill the missing gaps. As based on the latter copy, an edition of fragments unknown to this day was prepared, namely the beginning of chapter I, a part of chapter II, prefatory verse Przedmowa do czytelnika łaskawego (Foreword to the Gentle Reader), and Dialog abo Rozmowa o Sprawiedliwości Świeckiej (Dialogue or Conversation on Secular Justice), a piece appended to the reissue of The Trial.

The aim of this study is to uncover a neoplatonic discourse in the Swedish writer Birgitta Trotzigs novel Dykungens dotter (1985) (The Mud King's Daughter). This discourse is often interpreted as being an expression of Trotzigs catholic mysticism, but few of the earlier researchers have mentioned the strictly platonic influences in her work. Firstly; by analyzing the system of metaphors and the underlying philosophical premises in the text I aim to show that these are part of a hierarchical world view where life emanates from a single and undivided God. Secondly; I aim to show how this discourse can't be separated from a Marxist political view on the modern society and its capitalistic materialism.

W drugiej połowie XIX wieku wzrosło zainteresowanie Polaków Ameryką, co znalazło odzwierciedlenie w liczbie artykułów publikowanych na ten temat na łamach gazet i czasopism. Najwięcej uwagi temu krajowi poświęciła prasa warszawska. Bardzo wiele interesujących informacji o USA można było też znaleźć na łamach prasy śląskiej. Korespondencje ze Stanów Zjednoczonych zamieszczane w czasopismach ukazujących się na Śląsku zebrała i opublikowała w 1980 roku Danuta Piątkowska 1. Jak podawał Mirosław Frančić, zainteresowanie prasy poznańskiego i Galicji tą zamorska krainą było o wiele mniejsze 2 , mimo to ruch emigracyjny rozwijał się w tych regionach bardzo dynamicznie. Należy pamiętać, że Stany Zjednoczone, które po wojnie secesyjnej przechodziły okres intensywnej industrializacji, a dodatkowo wzmożonej kolonizacji Zachodu, przyciągały do siebie masy cudzoziemców, a także żądnych przygód podróżników zafascynowanych tym odległym krajem. Stany Zjednoczone jawiły się jako miejsce nieograniczonych możliwości szczególnie dla biednej ludności wiejskiej, która w emigracji upatrywała sposobu na poprawę losu. Może trochę dziwić, tak duże zainteresowanie prasy warszawskiej tematyką amerykańską, mimo iż w zaborze rosyjskim masowy ruch emigracyjny rozwinął się dopiero w latach 80. XIX wieku. Wprawdzie doniesień z USA nie napływało aż tak dużo jak z Paryża, Londynu czy innych stolic europejskich, to i tak ich liczba, jak na tak odległy kraj, była bardzo znacząca. Okazję do przekazania swoich wrażeń z podróży do Ameryki mieli:

Warszawa jest tak płocha jak kobieta i jak kobieta wrażliwa. Jest, niby pogoda majowa, zmienna i kapryśna. […] Z właściwą sobie a zadziwiającą łatwością przerzuca się od entuzjazmu do apatii, od gorącego uznania do obojętności nieczułej, od miłości wybuchowej aż do nienawiści. Wiecznie głodna i nienasycona, pożąda bez ustanku świeżych wrażeń, świeżych efektów życia, świeżego pokarmu dla wyobraźni zapalnej i świeżych ofiar dla czułego serca. Kryguje się i mizdrzy, niby zalotnica, wabi i nęci w zdradliwe ramiona, miłuje wiele, lecz przelotnie, wytrwale zaś hołduje snobizmowi tylko i modzie. Nie na próżno syrenę nosi w swym godle 1. W prasie z przełomu XIX i XX w. można znaleźć nader liczne emocjonalne opinie i komentarze na temat Warszawy, Łodzi i innych ośrodków miejskich Królestwa Polskiego. Widoczna w powyższym cytacie animizacja, czyli nadawanie opisywanym zjawiskom swoistych cech charakteru, typowych dla ludzi, zdają się świadczyć o głębokiej więzi emocjonalnej, łączącej piszących te słowa z opisywanymi przez nich miastami. Również i literatura piękna dostarcza nam emblematycznych postaci, takich jak subiekt Rzecki z Lalki czy Halpern z Ziemi obiecanej. Nie budzi zatem wątpliwości, że w epoce tej żyli z prawdziwego zdarzenia patrioci lokalni. Niektóre inicjatywy podejmowane przez rozmaitych działaczy społecznych w drugiej połowie XIX w. przywodzą u współczesnych autorów skojarzenia z tak zwanymi ruchami miejskimi 2. Głównym tematem książki jest kino modernistyczne, rozumiane w sposób możliwie szeroki jako część rozległego paradygmatu kulturowo-artystycznego, będącego reakcją na doświadczenie powojennej nowoczesności. Jego przejawy możemy odnaleźć w sposobie realizacji poszczególnych utworów (eksponującym subiektywizm, autorefleksyjność i stronę formalną dzieła), ale także instytucjonalno-ekonomicznych uwarunkowaniach kina artystycznego tego okresu oraz jego pozycji w światowym obiegu treści kulturowych.

Centralne miejsce w książce zajmuje temat późnego modernizmu, definiowanego jako schyłkowa faza opisywanej formacji. Przypadając głównie na lata 70. i 80. XX wieku obejmuje on przede wszystkim późne dzieła takich filmowców jak Tadeusz Konwicki i Wojciech Jerzy Has, jak też filmy debiutujących w tym okresie Andrzeja Żuławskiego, Grzegorza Królikiewicza czy Piotra Szulkina. Cechy właściwe dla filmowego modernizmu w ogóle uzupełniają oni tropy uwidaczniające się w schyłkowym okresie formacji – zainteresowanie tematami przemijania, końca czy apokalipsy oraz manierystyczne z ducha przestylizowanie. Często niedoceniane i niezrozumiane w momencie premiery, stanowią one istotny wkład do światowej kinematografii, świadcząc o transnarodowej wyobraźni polskich twórców późnomodernistycznych, kształtujących własną niepowtarzalną poetykę.

Resumen. Nos proponemos avanzar sobre el estudio del baile flamenco en la actualidad desde la perspectiva de género, teniendo en cuenta el cuerpo como medio de expresión a partir del cual se observan los fenómenos de hibridación, diversidad y transgresión presentes en los artistas de la era de la globalización. Por tanto, se investigará así sobre las características de "lo femenino" y "lo masculino" en el baile flamenco "tradicional" y su posterior desarrollo. Y para ello, analizaremos al bailaor Manuel Liñán por ser un ejemplo claro de todo esto, abarcando así su último espectáculo, Baile de autor, como la culminación, hasta el momento, de su desarrollo artístico y estético.

his article investigates the presence of a concealed and previously undetected numerical symbolism in a Stuart-era emblem book, Henry Peacham's Minerva Britanna (1611). Although alien to modern conceptions of art, emblem books constitute one of the most widely published and popular genres in early modern book production. Drawing from an eclectic tradition of literary, religious, and iconological traditions, the emblem book combined words and images into complex patterns of signification, often of a markedly didactic character. Popular in all the European vernaculars, it appealed to a wide range of Renaissance readers, from the nearly illiterate (by virtue of its illustrated nature) to the most erudite (by virtue of its reputation for dazzling displays of intellectual and aesthetic virtuosity). By convention the emblem was divided into three parts: superscriptio, pictura, and subscriptio: the superscriptio was the short legend or motto that typically appeared at the top of the page; below it appeared the pictura-the emblem per se-followed by the subscriptio, a longer responsive analysis, usually written in verse, which completed the design. While emblem book scholars still debate the exact relationship between the three parts-and no doubt individual emblem writers themselves sometimes conceived of it in different ways, Deitrich Walter Jöns' definition constitutes a useful and standard point of departure: "Between the motto and the picture there existed a more or less hidden relationship in meaning which the epigram illuminated." 2 This definition may readily be illustrated by Figure One, where the subscript of Peacham's emblem #24 (E4r) explains the connection between the superscript, Merenti-"to the one meriting"-and the pictura, remarking that in Peacham's day, unlike the romanticized past "Age of Justice," "Mome and Midas

My paper will deal with the semiotic problem of the interpretation of a multi-coded message in which a verbal statement is combined with an iconic statement. In particular, I will examine some Seventeenth Century texts belonging to the English "Emblem Book" tradition 1. In this context the verbal element, or "motto", was usually termed the "soul" and the pictorial element was called "the body". This particular "neoplatonic" terminology reflects some of the connotations often attributed to the emblematic form in the Renaissance, and helps to explain why the emblem was used both as a cognitive and epistemic tool, expressing intuitive knowledge of metaphysical truths, and as an important pedagogical form, teaching (through) the gradual aquisition of special interpretative skills. Emblems became significant didactic tools in Renaissance education since it was assumed that, in this "genre", the verbal and pictorial elements clarified and reinforced each other, and that pictures and words would communicate unequivocal meanings. However, both the reciprocity of the verbal and pictorial levels, and their immediate intellegibility can, to some extent, be questioned, as will, I hope, become evident in the following pages. In fact, I will examine here some emblems that actually dispay a significant complexity in the internal relationship of verbal and iconic meanings. These texts were first published in 1612 by Henry Peacham Jr., and are generally praised for the "unanimity of aim" that "picture and verse" have in them (Horden 1969). However, I believe that this aspect, which I would call "semantic integration" of the two codes, is not a constant feature of Peacham's emblems, where we find instead several instances of semantic diversion and even of dissonance. Habiéndose decidido por el segundo, aquél le ofreció un empleo en la tienda de don Ángel González. De este modo comenzó a trabajar en el "Bazar de la sorpresa", en la calle Real. Veamos como sigue el relato: La tienda de don Ángel González era, en muy [reducida escala], una especie de Bon Marché, [con] una sección de artículos para caballeros, y una tercera de artículos para señoras. Puesto a escoger, no vacilé un instante y me decidí por la última. Una instintiva voluptuosidad hacíame de antemano grato el manejo de los atavíos femeninos. Lo que luego he sentido con un goce casi enfermizo en mis visitas frecuentes a los paraísos mujeriles de París, lo experimenté desde el primer día en aquella tienda americana. No había allá, sin embargo, nada digno de tentar a una dama lujosa. El genio del gusto, con sus mil complicaciones encantadoras, con sus mil reflejos cambiantes, con sus suavidades tibias, no había aún penetrado en los trópicos (78-79).

After an extensive tour throughout Europe, including venues such as Amsterdam, London and Brussels, the French entrepreneur and magician Henri Robin arrived in Paris in 1862, where he opened a new theatre on the legendary Boulevard du Temple. His arrival remarkably coincided with the destruction of this renowned hub of popular visual culture as it was cleared to make way for Hausmann's far-reaching program of urban modernisation. Nonetheless, Robin started providing scientific entertainment for audiences to be both beguiled and informed, and managed to do so very successfully throughout the following five years. His evening shows consisted of a mix of astronomical sciences, magic and the evocation of ghosts. This article addresses Robin's career in relation to the changing ideas of theatricality and his remarkable persistence in commingling astronomy and magic within a theatrical context. It will show that Robin's initial concept of theatricality is concretized in his explicit demonstration to the spectator that they were at the theatre, and that this was indeed the place where the wonders of the heavens could pry open the matter of their own understanding. Correspondingly, Robin's career fizzled out during the Second Empire, when scientific activities were dispersing rapidly across different public sites, altering and reshaping the appeal of the physiques amusantes. The rise of professional conférences alongside the waning appeal of what the critic Théophile Gaultier termed 'ocular spectacle,' eventually forced theatre and astronomy into fixed and discreet domains. As such, the story of Henri Robin and his science-based spectacles articulates major shifts in the various relationships between art and science, and theatre and astronomy. He is currently a Principle Investigator in the project 'A Million Pictures: Magic Lantern Slide Heritage as Artefacts in the Common European History of Learning', funded by the Joint Programming Initiative on Cultural Heritage of the European Commission. Nele Wynants is a postdoctoral researcher at the Université libre de Bruxelles (THEA Joint Research Group) and the University of Antwerp (Research Centre for Visual Poetics). Her current research focuses on the interplay of performance, media history and science. She is editor in chief of FORUM+ for Research and Arts (www.forum-online.be), and is preparing a volume on media archaeology and theatre.

This article discusses the lantern at the nineteenth-century fairground as a mobile but hidden technology and elucidates the role of this optical medium in the transnational circulation of visual culture by focussing on one particular but exemplary case: the Théâtre Courtois and the Théâtre Grandsart-Courtois. This Belgian fairground family travelled during five generations around European fairgrounds from the early nineteenth until the beginning of the twentieth century. Their programmes were very diverse, combining magic with science and technology, music, dance and acrobatics. On their travels they picked up new technological developments and ideas that were particularly suited for show business and introduced them in their shows: from projection with lanterns, through the use of electric light to the introduction of the cinematograph at Belgian and French fairs. Relying on international fairground networks, they thus contributed to the circulation of visual culture between European cities and at annual fairs in smaller towns and villages. By considering these family theatres as actors of cultural transfer, and the lantern as a transcultural mediator, this article illustrates the variety and complexity of their mediating roles.

Mythologizing Busking: Discourse, Self-Narration, and Self-Creation The article deals with the phenomenon of mythologizing the activity of buskers. The purpose of the paper is to demonstrate that street performers, despite their rich and varied history, both diachronically and synchronically, continue to be represented in a simplistic, stereotypical way. The intention of the authors was to show the real, more complex image and identity of buskers. The research problem concerns the mythologization of street performances in terms of discourse, self-narration, and self-creation. The article relates to three research questions: (1) How are the activity of buskers and the performers themselves being described? (2) How do buskers create and explain their own stories in terms of performing in the street? (3) How do they create and interpret their image? Monografia, którą oddajemy w ręce Czytelnika, stanowi kontynuację i rozszerzenie tematyki przedstawionej w publikacji Literackie wizerunki przestrzeni domowych. Podobnie jak w przypadku wspomnianej wyżej antologii, Kulturowe wizerunki... skupiają się na motywie domu, z tą różnicą, że trzymana przez Czytelnika książka podejmuje tę tematykę z perspektywy znacznie szerszej, bo kulturowej. O ile zatem w poprzedniej publikacji dom traktowany był przede wszystkim jako motyw literacki, o tyle w niniejszej występuje w najróżniejszych rolach, od metafory i symbolu po namacalny obiekt-budynek mieszkalny. Nauka o kulturze, mimo iż stanowi domenę osobnej dyscypliny-kulturoznawstwa, bardzo często ma charakter interdyscyplinarny. W artykule poruszono kwestię obecności kobiet w mieście, zgodnie z koncepcją Heideggera „bycia w świecie”. Pokazano kobiecą formę poznawania kultury, literatury poprzez pisanie i malowanie. A ponadto autorka artykułu przedstawia doświadczenia kobiet, ich czytanie miasta. Do tej analizy i interpretacji wybrano kobiece zapiski z XIX w. – Dziennik Marii Baszkircew, rosyjskiej artystki, która mieszkała i pracowała we Francji, w Paryżu. Maria pisała o stolicy Francji, odwiedzając to miasto, o podróżach po całym tym państwie lub o podróżach do wielu innych krajów. Pokazała Paryż z perspektywy rezydenta, turystki i spacerowiczki.

Artykuł dotyczy wczesnego kina na Dolnym Śląsku, w szczególności pierwszych pokazów filmowych w 1896 r., działalności kin objazdowych, powstawania kin stałych i przełomu metrażowego, tj. przejścia od programów numerowych (złożonych z wielu filmów jednoaktowych) do programów opartych na filmie wieloaktowym z programem towarzyszącym. W centrum uwagi znajdują się małe miejscowości Dolnego Śląska, ponieważ metropolia, jaką był Wrocław, stanowiła temat innych opracowań. Z artykułu wynika m.in., że kinematografia na Dolnym Śląsku szybko upowszechniała się w małych miejscowościach – już w 1896 r. filmy były pokazywane w kilku miastach, a sześciotysięczny Namysłów, w którym kino otwarto w 1912 r., w tym samym roku przeszedł na projekcje filmów wieloaktowych.

The main task of the present article is to characterize the changing perspectives in the description and definition of modernism and modernity in a reciprocal relationship of these two categories. The creation of definitions is described here as a processes of fictionalization with a generational viewpoint of scholars. Moreover, the article indicates the difference between a nominal and a relational mode of defining and the question of institutionalization of knowledge within the framework of definition projects. Such research perspectives lead to the conclusion about dialogical and at the same time contradictory character of historical formations of phenomena to which the studied terms allude.

El propósito de este trabajo es reflexionar sobre la construcción de la escritora como personaje público a partir del caso de Lucie Delarue-Mardrus y su proyección en España, situándola en el marco de las tensiones que rodean a la condición femenina a principios del siglo XX. Si bien su obra es traducida y reseñada, es su propia figura el elemento que focaliza la atención de la crítica como lo constatan las diversas referencias de cronistas destacados (Enrique Gómez Carrillo, Isabel Oyarzábal, María Luz Morales o Teresa de Escoriaza, entre otros). Este fenómeno permite ver los elementos clave de la construcción autorial femenina, como la incorporación de estrategias propias de la nueva idea de celebridad y su uso como mecanismo esencial para lidiar con la dificultad de ser mujer en la esfera pública. Résumé Ce travail vise à réfléchir sur la construction de l'écrivaine comme personnage public à partir du cas de Lucie Delarue-Mardrus et de sa projection en Espagne en la situant dans le cadre des tensions autour de la condition féminine au début du XX e siècle. Bien que son oeuvre soit traduite et fasse l'objet de comptes rendus, c'est sa personne qui attire l'attention des critiques : Enrique Gómez Carrillo, Isabel Oyarzábal, María Luz Morales ou Teresa de Escoriaza. Ce phénomène nous permet de voir les éléments clés de la construction de la figure d'auteur féminin, ainsi que l'incorporation de stratégies liées au nouveau concept de célébrité qui voit le jour et leur utilisation comme principal mécanisme essentiel pour faire face à la difficulté qu'implique, pour une femme, d'être présente dans la sphère publique. The educational achievements of early modern Malta must be set against a background of the widespread illiteracy in "Europe at the time. It is probable that half the men and a much higher percentage of women were illiterate, even in the more advanced states of Europe.1 Nonetheless, there is evidence that literacy was far more widespread than is often thought, especially if one takes into account the number of persons accused of owning or perusing prohibited books in various parts of Catholic Europe.2 By the middle of the 16th century, the printed book had been produced in sufficient quantities that made it accessible to anyone who could read.3

After an extensive tour throughout Europe, including venues such as Amsterdam, London and Brussels, the French entrepreneur and magician Henri Robin arrived in Paris in 1862, where he opened a new theatre on the legendary Boulevard du Temple. His arrival remarkably coincided with the destruction of this renowned hub of popular visual culture as it was cleared to make way for Hausmann's far-reaching program of urban modernisation. Nonetheless, Robin started providing scientific entertainment for audiences to be both beguiled and informed, and managed to do so very successfully throughout the following five years. His evening shows consisted of a mix of astronomical sciences, magic and the evocation of ghosts. This article addresses Robin's career in relation to the changing ideas of theatricality and his remarkable persistence in commingling astronomy and magic within a theatrical context. It will show that Robin's initial concept of theatricality is concretized in his explicit demonstration to the spectator that they were at the theatre, and that this was indeed the place where the wonders of the heavens could pry open the matter of their own understanding. Correspondingly, Robin's career fizzled out during the Second Empire, when scientific activities were dispersing rapidly across different public sites, altering and reshaping the appeal of the physiques amusantes. The rise of professional conférences alongside the waning appeal of what the critic Théophile Gaultier termed 'ocular spectacle,' eventually forced theatre and astronomy into fixed and discreet domains. As such, the story of Henri Robin and his science-based spectacles articulates major shifts in the various relationships between art and science, and theatre and astronomy.
