Los principales esfuerzos de aproximación al tema datan de la primera mitad del siglo XX, a partir de los estudios bibliográficos sobre los impresos litúrgico-musicales novohispanos del siglo XVI, sacados a la luz primero, por los bibliófilos mexicanos desde inicios del siglo pasado, 3 y tiempo después, por el musicólogo americanista Robert Stevenson, en sus primeras publicaciones sobre la música colonial mexicana. 4 Fue Stevenson quien aportó una mirada más acuciosa y valorativa, enfatizando su importancia, entre otras razones, por contener un canto llano "menos corrupto" que el de otras fuentes y por mostrar vetas heterogéneas de diversas tradiciones litúrgicas. En adelante, los únicos estudios con un enfoque más específico, han sido el de Enid Patricia Housty, en su tesis sobre el Gradual Dominical postridentino impreso en 1576, corregido por Juan Hernández. Esta investigación aporta un estudio comparativo entre algunos ejemplares de este impreso, confrontados con otros graduales de diversas épocas y procedencias. 5 Para entonces, aun no se tenía ubicado ningún ejemplar pre-tridentino de este Gradual (c. 1568), circunstancia que ha cambiado al ser localizados e identificados varios de estos impresos, los cuales son incluidos entre los materiales de estudio de esta investigación. Por último, la tesis de Mary Elizabeth Duncan sobre el Salterio, Antifonario impreso por Pedro de Ocharte en 1584. 6 A nivel histórico documental se ubican los aportes de la historiadora Lourdes Turrent, quien ha estudiado aspectos corporativos y organizativos de la práctica litúrgico-musical en la 3

El presente trabajo de investigación ofrece la edición crítica y de uso de una de las obras cumbres de la polifonía vocal a cappella en nuestro país —prácticamente desconocida hasta la fecha—, como lo es la Misa Santa Efigenia (para cuatro voces mixtas solas) compuesta, en 1935, por Vicente Emilio Sojo —primera misa a cappella escrita en Venezuela—, tomando como fuente principal el manuscrito original autógrafo disponible, que reposa en el Archivo de la Escuela Superior de Música «José Ángel Lamas», (ahora ubicado en la Biblioteca Nacional de Venezuela).

Many years before he became recognised as the founder of the Czech-Moravian national opera, and long before the successful performance of Jenufa in Prague and Vienna strengthened his position in the canon of Czech music and established his lasting international reputation, Leoš Janáček presented himself as a composer, organist, church musician, music critic – and, first and foremost, as a choirmaster and conductor. Except for Helfert, earlier musicologists have been so anxious to comment on Janáček’s later works and to tell the story about “the unrecognized genius”, that they have not paid much attention to the reception of his early activities. And, therefore, they have not realized that Janáček came to be the Janáček – the recognized genius – when he was barely thirty years old. In Brno, Janáček enjoyed great favour from the critics and the public, at first almost entirely Czech, from his first attempts as a conductor, performer, and composer. The reception of all of his artistic activities was conditioned by their specific functions in the Czech bourgeoisie culture that was becoming emancipated in Brno in the early 1870s – a culture that was in many respects late revivalist (in terms of the National Revival), ideologically oriented by the Old Czech political movement and defined by a combination of Roman Catholicism, Moravian patriotism, and Czech nationalism.

El compositor Sebastián de Vivanco (ca.1551-1622) es considerado históricamente como uno de los maestros más admirados de la música española de la Edad Moderna, al haber disfrutado de una posición privilegiada dentro del canon histórico de su tiempo, junto a las más grandes figuras contemporáneas de la polifonía religiosa hispana de la segunda mitad del siglo XVI —Cristóbal de Morales, Juan Navarro, Francisco Guerrero, Felipe Rogier, Alonso Lobo y Tomás Luis de Victoria—. Aceptando, pues, la importante fama y reputación de Vivanco durante su vida, debe recordarse que después de su muerte continuó siendo un autor ampliamente reconocido para los teóricos musicales españoles de los siglos XVII y XVIII (Andrés Lorente: El por qué de la música (1672): ejemplo de “eminencia en el arte de la música”) e igualmente halagado por algunos de los músicos más destacados del siglo XIX español como Hilarión Eslava, Baltasar Saldoni o Felipe Pedrell. Sin embargo, salvo un reducido número de estudios muy puntuales, esta posición de extraordinaria referencia dentro del Olimpo de la música hispana ha pasado de la fama de siglos precedentes al olvido casi absoluto en la Historiografía del siglo XX. Todavía son muchas y variadas las cuestiones por resolver en torno a la vida y obra de este maestro de capilla renacentista debido a que la mayoría de su música permanece aún inédita y, por lo tanto, inaccesible para estudiosos, intérpretes y el público aficionado.

The article  delves  into  the  effects  of  censorship  on  artisticexpression,  drawing on the  insights  of  composer  Adrian  Pop.  In  commemoration of  the  35th anniversary  of  the  Romanian Revolution,  theconversation sheds  light  on how  censorship  influenced music  during theCommunist  era  and  how  composers  ingeniously  maneuvered through its  constraints.  Adrian Pop  highlights  that,  while  censorship enforced strictboundaries,  it  did  not  completely  suppress  creativity, which  persisted and thrived,  much  like  the  Danube carving  its    path through mountains.  The article  explores  the  dynamic  between  censorship and self-censorship, illustrating  how  propaganda often  acted  as  a counterpart  to  censorship. Additionally,  it  touches  on  the  significance of  folklore in  music  and  thegradual  shift  of  composers  toward  experimentalism,  despite the  regime’s restrictive environment.

Necil Kâzım Akses (1908-1999), Türk müziğinde modernist yaklaşımları uygulayan değerli bestecilerden biri olarak, eserlerinde, geleneksel müzik anlayışını Batı müziği teknikleriyle bir araya getirmiştir. Akses’in müzikal dili, özellikle armonik yapılarında yenilikçi bir tavır sergileyen ve çoğunlukla tonalitenin sınırlarını genişleten bir yaklaşıma sahiptir. Bu bağlamda; aynı anda birden fazla tonal merkezin kullanılması anlamına gelen ve dinleyiciye gerilim, çatışma gibi çok boyutlu müzikal deneyim sunan “politonalite”, Akses’in eserlerinde sıklıkla karşılaşılan önemli bir teknik olarak öne çıkmaktadır. Akses’in Allegro Feroce (1931) başlıklı eseri, bu yenilikçi yaklaşımın erken dönem güçlü bir örneğidir. Eserde; “salkım akor” ve “çoklu eksen kullanımı” ile “üçlü aralık serimi” gibi teknikler yoluyla politonalitenin dramatik etkileri ustalıkla işlenmiştir. Farklı olduğu derecede belli belirsiz tonal merkezlerin eş zamanlı olarak sergilenmesi dolayısıyla atonaliteden ziyade politonalite kavramına yakın konumlanan yapıtta; yaratılan gerilim, müzikal anlatımı derinleştirirken dinamik ve enerjik bir atmosferi de beraberinde getirmektedir. Akses’in Allegro Feroce’de tercih ettiği bu teknikler, eserin yalnızca armonik açıdan zenginleşmesini sağlamakla kalmamakta, “feroce” (vahşice) karakter ifadesinin gereği olan dramatik atmosferin inşasında da önemli rol oynamaktadır.

THE CONSTRUCTION OF DRAMATIC EXPRESSION IN MUSIC THROUGH POLYTONALITY: AKSES, ALLEGRO FEROCE

ABSTRACT
Necil Kazım Akses (1908-1999), as one of the prominent composers applying modernist approaches in Turkish music, brought together traditional musical understanding with Western music techniques in his works. Akses’ musical language displays an innovative attitude, particularly in its harmonic structures, and often pushes the boundaries of tonality. In this context, “polytonality,” which involves the simultaneous use of multiple tonal zones and offers the listener a multidimensional musical experience such as tension and conflict, stands out as an essential technique frequently encountered in Akses’ works. Akses’ piece Allegro Feroce (1931) is an early example of this innovative approach. In this work, the dramatic effects of polytonality are skillfully processed through techniques such as “cluster chord,” “polytonality,” and the “series of triadic intervals.” Due to the simultaneous presentation of vague tonal centers to varying degrees, the piece leans more toward the concept of polytonality rather than atonality, and the created tension deepens the musical narrative while bringing along a dynamic and energetic atmosphere. The techniques Akses chooses in Allegro Feroce enrich the work harmonically and play a significant role in constructing the dramatic atmosphere required by the “feroce” (fierce) character expression.

Émile Vuillermoz (1878Vuillermoz ( -1960) ) est un géant de la critique musicale française, et certainement le plus illustre représentant de l'« âge d'or » de la musicographie dans la presse. Extrêmement prolifique, il a rédigé près de 6 000 textes sur la musique, auxquels il faut ajouter des articles sur le cinéma et sur divers autres sujets pour un total d'environ 10 000. Sa carrière s'est étalée sur 61 années (de 1899 à 1960) et a comme particularité de s'être principalement déployée dans les journaux quotidiens et hebdomadaires et non dans la presse musicale. La production vuillermozienne incarne une forme de critique musicale « au quotidien », ainsi qu'une critique engagée conçue comme un outil stratégique pour influencer le développement de la musique de son temps. Cette thèse, au croisement de la musicologie, de l'histoire de la presse et des periodical studies, a comme objectif d'étudier, à travers le cas de Vuillermoz, les interactions entre presse et musique durant les six premières décennies du XX e siècle sous divers angles : la diversité des supports périodiques à la musicographie et l'évolution de sa présence dans l'espace médiatique, la structuration de la profession par le biais d'une constellation d'écrits métacritiques, la construction d'une carrière de critique au sein et en dehors de la presse musicale, la promotion d'idées esthétiques par un discours se déployant dans plusieurs organes de presse simultanément et dans le temps, et, enfin, l'utilisation de la musicographie « de masse » à des fins idéologiques. Vuillermoz est ainsi à la fois l'objet de cette thèse et le guide d'une exploration plus large. Il sert de « filtre » pour étudier le rôle de la musicographie dans le double écosystème de la presse et de la musique. Un des apports de cette thèse est aussi de couvrir une longue période qui transcende les deux guerres mondiales souvent utilisées comme balises temporelles aux corpus. Ce parcours permet notamment

In this study, instruments and music of the foundations and that in subsequent periods from the music on a large scale affecting instrumental Baroque period music, the main lines will be put forward, in particular the call violin / interpretation in considering the main elements of certain titles are grouped under. The aim in this article, the general features of the Baroque period music instrumental reveal the period's musical and to give information about the dynamics instrumental. In this way, for today the execution of works in the Baroque period to gain new perspectives is targeted.

Bu çalışma Romantik Dönem flüt repertuvarında yer alan Franz Doppler'in "Op.26 Fantaisie Pastorale Hongroise" eserinin icrası için bir kılavuz niteliğinde hazırlanmıştır. Flüt performansına yönelik müzikal yorum ve teknik bilgiler içermektedir. Bu araştırmada nitel araştırma yöntemi kullanılmış, imslp.org adlı müzik kütüphanesine yüklenen edisyondan faydalanılmıştır. Araştırmanın ilk kısmında 19. yüzyıla egemen olan Romantik Dönemin karakteristik müzik kültürü diğer sanat dallarıyla ilişkilendirilmiş, ardından Romantik dönemin müziğine ait temel unsurlar Klasik dönem müzik özellikleriyle karşılaştırılarak açıklanmıştır. Araştırmanın devamında Macar besteci ve aynı zamanda flüt icracısı olan Franz Doppler'in biyografisine yer verilmiş, bestecinin müzik dili ve flütlü yapıtları hakkında bilgi verilmiştir. Araştırmanın bulgular bölümünde Franz Doppler'in "Op.26 Fantaisie Pastorale Hongroise" (Pastoral Macar Fantazisi) adlı piyanolu flüt eserinin form yapısı incelenmiş, icra açısından yoruma fazlasıyla açık bir eser olduğundan icracıya bağlı kadanssal yorumun abartıdan kaçınarak ne şekilde icra edilmesi gerektiği sebepleriyle açıklanmıştır. Böylelikle bu yapıdaki eserlerle karşılaşıldığında ne şekilde çalışılması ve yorumlaması hakkında örnek oluşturmaktadır.

Bu makalenin amacı, yirminci yüzyılda yaşamış olan Avusturyalı müzisyen ve teorisyen Arnold Schönberg'in atonal müzik uygulaması üzerinde somutlaştırdığı müzik estetiği anlayışını tarihsel ve teorik koşulları içerisinde açıklamaktır. Bu bağlamda, öncelikle Schönberg'in müziğinin eleştirel bir şekilde eklemlendiği klasik üçlüsel armoni ve onun tarihsel önseli kabul edilen antik armoni kavrayışlarının ana uğraklarını kışça açıklayacağız. Söz konusu kapsamda, Antik Yunan dünyasından Pythagorasçıların ve Aristoxenus'un çalışmalarının önemi belirtilecek ve Avrupa Orta Çağ organum müziği, Musica Enchiriadis ve Scolia Enchiriadis gibi tonal dönem öncesi temel uğraklara değinilecektir. Ardından üçlüsel armoni fikrinin kısa bir yapısal analizi sunularak tonalite fikri açıklanacaktır. Son olarak, yukarıda verili olan arka plandan yola çıkarak Schönberg'in atonal müziğinin olanaklı bir yapısal analizini sunacak ve nihayet, onu müzik estetiği açısından klasik batı müziği geleneği içerisinde konumlandırmaya çalışacağız. Bu son bölüm konu ile ilgisinde 12 ton müziğinin dizi, matris, yansıtma, tersine çevirme ve yansıtıp tersine çevirme gibi temel kavramlarının kimi teknik analizlerini de içerecektir.

Four complete recordings P ublic familiarity with Enescu's music for piano solo was only possible in recent years, damaged as it was by the same frustrating problems that still hinder the focus on his whole oeuvre. Of course, one attributes to the immense wasting of violinist and conductor Enescu's energies-in demand, for half a century, just about everywhere in the Western world-this abundance of unfinished works and drafts. An added confusing factor was brought about by his own incurable perfectionism, over time manifested to an extent that many might label pathological; for Enescu thought it necessary to keep for himself or even withdraw a number of scores which he felt obligated to process through tireless reworkings, insistences, additions, but which, while still unable to reach the ultimate perfection their composer had dreamed for them, nevertheless fascinated, once performed posthumously, by their satisfying degree of coagulation. To these adverse consequences, caused by the performer's busy schedule and the composer's reserved nature, a series of historical vicissitudes were added: Enescu misplaced some complete scores which were only brought to light much later, after his death; and the recent resurfacing, in Romanian auctions taking place in doubtful conditions, of previously unknown Enescian documents (most of them, excerpts from his extensive correspondence, next to some odd drafts) is likely to keep-even today, in an already late stage of Enescian posterity-the eventuality of surprises turning up in private archives open.

In the last three decades, numerous literary works have been published by women writers with origins in Italy’s former colonies in the
Horn of Africa. These narratives have helped to create a belated
form of postcolonial consciousness in Italy. Ethiopian American
writer Maaza Mengiste adds to this body of work with her Booker
longlisted novel, The Shadow King, which depicts the Italian invasion of Ethiopia (1935–41). This article analyses her text through the
lens of intergenerational trauma theory. It applies Michael
Rothberg’s notion of “complex implication”, referring to how an
inheritance of victimhood may coexist with a position of implication, and Mihaela Mihai’s concept of “impure resistance”, which
allows space for the ambivalence that may be implicit in resistance.
It thus explores Mengiste’s portrayal of the enduring – and often
unconscious – legacy of past trauma on the present and examines
how subject positions such as “victim” and “perpetrator” fluctuate
over generations.

TR: Saygun’un Türk halk müziğinin modal yapısı üzerine kuramsal bilgiler verdiği çeşitli yayınlarının ve bu yayınları bağlamında düşünülmesi gereken Töresel Musıki başlıklı okuma kitabının içerikleri, bir budun müzikbilimci olarak kendisinin Türk halk müz- iğini ve bu müzik geleneğini içine yerleştirdiği “Akdeniz havzası” müziklerini modal bakımdan antik Yunan mod kuramıyla ilişkilendirdiğini göstermektedir. Bu yayın- larda yer verdiği ‘töre’ dizileri aynı zamanda modal açıdan bestecinin yapıtlarının da temelini oluşturur.

Saygun’un bu yayınların sadece birinde yer verdiği ‘Alaca Dor Terkibi’, yapıtlarının yatay boyutunun vazgeçilmez ve uzun erimli ses malzemelerinden biri, belki de en dikkat çekenidir. Bestecinin bu diziyi kullanma gerekçesinin salt bir müziksel tercihe veya beğeniye dayanmadığı, bazı budun müzikbilimsel ve kültürel olgulardan kay- naklandığı düşünülmektedir. Bu durum, bestecinin anılan diziyi bir armonik malzeme olarak da kullanmış olup olmadığı sorusunu akla getirir.

Karadeniz ve Berki, [3,5,3] şeklinde formülleştirdikleri akor yapısının ve türevlerinin, Saygun’un yapıtlarında sıklıkla bulunduğu saptamasını yaparken bir anekdota daya- narak bunun kaynağının Bestenigâr dizisi olduğunu belirtmiştir. Ancak bu akor ve türevleri, Saygun’un kullandığı ve yapısında eksilmiş sekizli veya büyük yedili bulu- nan başka dizilerden de elde edilebilmektedir. Bununla birlikte, eksilmiş sekizlinin artmış birlinin çevrimi olması, söz konusu akor yapılarının, alaca Dor töre dizisin- den de elde edilmiş olabileceği olasılığını akla getirmekte ve bu çalışma Saygun’un bir imzası olarak nitelendirilen [3,5,3]’ün altında bir başka ‘imza’nın bulunduğunu savlamaktadır.

The contents of Saygun’s various publications, in which he provides theoretical information on the modal structure of Turkish folk music, and the solmization book titled Töresel Musıki (Modal Music), which should be considered in the context of these publications, show that he has modally associated Turkish folk music with the ancient Greek musical system. The mode scales (töres) included in these publications also form the basis of the composer’s works from a modal point of view. One scale that Saygun included in only one of these publications, Alaca Dor Terkibi (Dorian scale in the chromatic genus), also possesses unique compositional sound material, for it is used frequently by the composer throughout his numerous works. This begs the question of whether the composer might have also used this scale as harmonic material.

Karadeniz and Berki determined that the chord structure they formulated as [3,5,3] and its derivatives are frequently found in Saygun’s works and stated that, in light of an anecdote they quoted, the source for this is the Bestenigâr scale. However, this chord and its derivatives can also be obtained from some other scales the composer also uses, including the chromatic Dorian mode, and this study asserts that the [3,5,3] chord, a signature of Saygun according to Karadeniz and Berki, may have emerged from another scale, which essentially seems the genuine underlying signature.

Sono lieto di ospitare nella nostra rivista on line gli Atti del primo dei due convegni di studi su Alberto Savinio che si sono svolti nel 2022 a Milano, in giugno, e a Parigi in dicembre. Essi sono stati il frutto di una stretta e fattiva collaborazione tra l'Università degli Studi di Bologna, l'Université Sorbonne Nouvelle di Parigi e l'Archivio dell'Arte Metafisica di Milano, e hanno coinvolto a vario titolo la Pinacoteca di Brera, l'Associazione Amici di Brera, la Fondazione Maison de l'Italie di Parigi e il Gabinetto "G.P. Vieusseux" di Firenze. Aver visto una così larga e sentita partecipazione di giovani studiose e studiosi ci fa pensare che questi Atti, e i successivi che saranno editi a Parigi, saranno un punto di riferimento importante per chiunque vorrà ora e in futuro guardare con spirito libero a un importante settore di ricerca-quello dell'arte musicale letteraria e pittorica che si definì metafisica-che è troppo spesso soffocato dai pregiudizi. Unter der Vielfalt von originellen Auffilhrungsangaben, die man in den Partituren von Gustav Mahler findet, stellt der enigmatische Hinweis «wie aus der Feme» eine besondere Schwierigkeit für die Interpretation dar. Offensichtlich hat der Hinweis wenig mit der gewöhnlichen räumlichen Feme zu tun , die man mit einem Fernorchester außerhalb der Bühne ausdrückt. Oft scheint es, daß Mahler eher eine Art imaginärer Feme im Sinne hatte, deren Vorhandensein von der Einbildungskraft des Spielers oder Hörers abhängt. Das kleine Wort «wie» genügt, um die genannte «Feme» von einer objektiven in eine subjektive Dimension zu transportieren. So kann man z.B. die Posthomstellen im 3. Satz von Mahlers 3. Symphonie verstehen, die sogar «wie aus weitester Feme» bezeichnet sind. Komplementär zur räumlichen Feme, die der Hörer im Näherkommen und Sich-Entfernen des Posthomklangs erlebt, entsteht im Laufe dieser Stellen eine unverkennbare Dimension der imaginären Feme der Erinnerung. Dieser Eindruck hängt damit zusammen, daß das Posthorn immer isoliert in seiner eigenen musikalischen Sphäre bleibt, getrennt vom sonstigen Lauf des symphonischen Satzes. Die immer leisere Dynamik und befreitere Fortschrittsweise der Melodie stellt sicher, daß das veraltete Instrument in einem abgesonderten, schwebenden Musikreich außerhalb der <wirklichem musikalischen Gegenwart gefangen bleibt. Der Ausdruck und die Wirkung der Posthomstellen sind mit einer spezifischen musiktechnischen Atmosphäre untrennbar verknüpft, die mehrmals im Mahlerschen Schaffen auftaucht, auch ohne den ausdrücklichen Hinweis auf die Feme. In der Tat: was verwandte Passagen wie die Einleitung der 1. Symphonie oder die Herdenglocken der 6. Symphonie mit den Posthomstellen gemeinsam haben, erweist sich als eine bestimmte Kompositionstechnik, die eine musikalische Parallele zu <Feme> bildet. Zum einen durch ihre desorientierende Wirkung auf die Zeiterfahrung des Hörers, zum anderen durch ihre starre Harmonik, verschwommene Metrik und verschleierte innere Form, schafft diese Kompositionstechnik ein schwebendes musikalisches Gebilde, das von der traditionellen Symphonik ziemlich entfernt erscheint. Statt dem <Beethovenschen Muß> nachzugehen, wie Adorno unter Bezug auf die fortfahrende Energie der tonalen Musik schön formulierte, repräsentiert Mahlers <Musik aus der Feme> ein Stehenbleiben, eine Kontinuität ohne Energie und ohne Ziel. Damit die besondere Ausdruckskraft dieser Musik erhalten bleibt, muß der Komponist die vom Hörer erwartete musikalische Syntax ständig venneiden, umformen oder sogar überschreiten. Auf diese Weise entsteht in vielen Mahlerschen Werken eine konturenlose, gleichsam zeitenthobene alternative Musikwelt, die als schroffer Gegensatz zum zeitgebundenen Drang der typischen tonalen Welt eine faszinierende Wechselwirkung mit ihr in Gang setzt. Indem Mahler diese alternative Musikwelt mehrmals formulierte und umformulierte, wurde sie im Laufe der Zeit eines der <Forschungsthemen> seiner Kunst. Es ist nicht zu bestreiten, daß eine wesentliche Facette von Mahlers <Forschung> die Entwicklung der kompositionstechnischen Basis dieser Musikwelt war. Eine zweite Facette war die Erfindung verschiedener Wechselwirkungen, die zwischen der alternativen und der üblichen Musikwelt stattfinden. Aber es gibt eine dritte und besonders vielsagende Facette von Mahlers Erforschung einer alternativen Musikwelt. Wenn man unter Zugrundelegung ihrer auffallenden musiktechnischen Mittel alle Erscheinungen dieser Welt im Mahlerschen Gesamtwerk zusammenträgt, entdeckt man unter ihnen eine überwiegende Zahl von Vokalwerken und programmatischen Instrumentalsätzen. Die Texte und Programme dieser Werke machen deutlich, daß die musikalische Besonderheit, nach der Mahler jahrelang strebte, in Texten über menschliche Begegnungen mit den verschiedenen Erscheinungen des Jenseits ihren Ursprung hat. Um die Konturen von Mahlers Begriff des Jenseits zu klären, ist der schon erwähnte Begriff von Feme wieder hilfreich. lm allgemeinsten Sinne enthält das Jenseits alles, was außerhalb des Alltagslebens steht. Dabei sind nicht nur nichtrnenschliche Wesen und andere Dimensionen der Existenz gemeint, sondern auch die verschiedenen Erscheinungen im Reiche der Phantasie. Gleichzeitig kann die Gestalt des Jenseits sowie die Form seiner Wechselwirkung mit der Menschenwelt verschiedene Formen annehmen. Die Text-und Notenbeispiele der folgenden Erörterung zeigen, daß Mahlers Jenseitsbegriff oft die imaginäre Feme der Phantasie mit der Existenzfeme anderer Wesen verbindet. Im Frühwerk Das klagende Lied ist das Jenseits die Welt des Übernatürlichen, aus der eine gespenstische Stimme in das Alltagsleben klagt. Das Jenseits des Orchesterliedes « O Mensch! Gib Acht! » ist psychologischer orientiert und erscheint als das Erklingen einer unbewußten Botschaft in den Träumen. In seiner Behandlung der inneren Selbstverfremdung, die das unbegreifliche Leiden im Leben katalysiert, erweitert das Rückert-Lied «Um Mitternacht» den Begriff des Jenseits auf das Göttliche sowie das Gebiet der Gefühle. Schließlich in der Gesamtwirkung des Endes von «Der Abschied» aus Das Lied von der Erde begegnen wir dem Jenseits des Todes und der Ewigkeit, wo das menschliche in ein übermenschliches Dasein aufgeht. Die subtilen Unterschiede zwischen Mahlers sich wandelnden Interpretationen des Begriffes und der Wirkung des Jenseits sind wichtig, weil jede Interpretation sehr unterschiedliche Wirkungen auf das musikalische Gebilde hat. César Franck established himself as one of the major composers of the 19th century, but what about his Belgianness, he who from a Dutch citizen born in Liège became Belgian before being naturalized French? Although he left his country of origin as a child, he found it again at the end of his life, thanks to Belgian musicians who became his friends and who worked to spread his music with passion. Eugène Ysaÿe is obviously one of them, as are his composition students Théo Ysaÿe and Guillaume Lekeu.

Il volume raccoglie i testi delle relazioni presentate al convegno internazionale organizzato a Saluzzo il 17 settembre 2021 dall'Istituto per i Beni Musicali in Piemonte, che conserva l'archivio di Rosario Scalero (1870-1954) presso il fondo "Monique de Ruette Arnoldi". Un'occasione per aggiungere particolari all'arco della sua biografia, a partire dagli anni di formazione: dai rapporti con l'ambiente musicale a Torino al decisivo soggiorno a Vienna e alla parentesi a Roma. Le nuove ricerche aggiornano le conoscenze su alcuni aspetti della creatività di Scalero per il violino, suo strumento prediletto, ma anche su altre pagine del suo catalogo, quali quelle pianistiche e orchestrali. Ne escono inoltre approfonditi i riferimenti-sempre ben presenti nella sua opera-ai modelli della grande tradizione classica, Bach e Brahms soprattutto, alla base del suo efficacissimo modo di insegnare la composizione. Ricevono così nuova luce i legami tra il maestro e i suoi allievi e le sue allieve dei corsi da lui tenuti a New York e a Filadelfia successivamente alla prima guerra mondiale-alcuni di essi destinati a luminose carriere: Nino Rota, Gian Carlo Menotti, Samuel Barber i principali. Fondamentale in quanto scenario di tutte queste vicende musicali la residenza estiva del maestro, il castello di Montestrutto nel Canavese, anch'esso oggetto dei recenti studi, così come l'archivio del musicista, ora riordinato e reso disponibile.

The article analyzes Beyond the Frame (Oltre i bordi, 2023), a film based on Simone Brioni's fortuitous discovery of a family archive: a box of photographs taken in Italian East Africa in the 1930s by a distant relative. Beyond the Frame discusses colonial photography and visuality, as well as the material legacies of that past, challenging the gaze through which they framed the subjective and collective idea of Africa in Italian society. The article is divided into two parts, each of which discusses colonial photography and how Beyond the Frame observes, interprets, and reflects on how the legacy of colonialism shapes our present. In the first part, Brioni traces the process that led to the construction of a narrative that interweaves personal reflections and collective history. In the second part, Gianmarco Mancosu draws upon Ann Laura Stoler's work to discuss how the colonial archive and the remains of empire fashion our present, with a particular emphasis on photography and on colonial traces in the Italian cityscape. The article shows how the film works with as well as against the archive: how it enacts a process of resignification, thus modifying the original meaning of colonial pictures.

In un articolo del 1932 sulla rivista «Nuova Antologia», Giuseppe Adami tratteggiava con efficacia i meccanismi della creatività di Puccini: un «sistema di ricerca continua del soggetto attraverso il teatro di prosa», in cui le «impressioni dirette» (atmosfera, colore, suspense) costituivano il fulcro del riadattamento operistico. Il compositore «vede il libretto» fantasticando su un’esperienza vissuta; egli è prim’ancora uno spettatore, che desidera prolungare l’effetto della scena, il timbro soggettivo della propria emozione.
Il processo che da "La Houppelande" conduce a "Il tabarro" è un caso affascinante in tal senso, e merita di essere esplorato a partire da una semplice domanda: che cosa ha visto e sentito Puccini in quel maggio 1912 al Théâtre Marigny? Si tratta di ritornare sulla pièce di Didier Gold, inquadrandola nel contesto e svelandone il potenziale di attrazione. Nel mio intervento, propongo un’analisi delle testimonianze riguardanti La Houppelande (recensioni, interviste), da cui traspare la portata di un progetto non riducibile all’etichetta grandguignolesca. Si voleva innestare nel teatro di varietà un «rilievo drammatico» inatteso per il pubblico: l’atto unico di Gold nasceva come «tentativo di rinnovare il music-hall» («Le Figaro», 17 agosto 1910). Di qui il richiamo di un attore del calibro di Édouard de Max, già Scarpia ne "La Tosca" di Sardou, e la cura per «una scenografia tra le più impressionanti, di cui si apprezza allo stesso tempo il pittoresco e la verità» (ivi, 31 agosto 1910). Approfondirò questi indirizzi di poetica privilegiando un aspetto sinora trascurato, ossia l’utilizzo della musica diegetica come tocco di realismo che stimola l’immaginazione: oltre ai rumori della città, cinque chansons affiorano dallo sfondo, canticchiate da personaggi comprimari o intonate da organetti e fisarmoniche nei pressi di un bal-musette. La funzione di commento e di amplificazione lirica raggiunge esiti talora toccanti, come quando "Fascination" (valse chanté di Marchetti) accompagna in sordina la confessione d’amore di Michel, interrompendosi nel punto esatto in cui viene evocato il figlio morto, la fine del sogno. 
Mi pongo quindi il problema della ricezione di queste strategie teatrali, esaminando la genesi del "Tabarro" attraverso documenti inediti, conservati nell’Archivio di Torre del Lago: l’opuscolo della pièce di Gold, costellato di appunti, e il libretto dell’opera (con revisioni manoscritte), nelle due stesure del 1915 e del novembre 1916. In quest’ultima copia, che include abbozzi di motivi musicali, Puccini scrive ancora: «Non so se metterò il bal musette». È solo una delle tracce di un dialogo con la fonte francese, che coinvolge compositore e librettista nella creazione di un codice personale. Il venditore di canzonette, con la profezia agrodolce di Mimì, sostituirà la musica della "Petite Tonkinoise", che inebriava Georgette da lontano. In altri casi, basterà l’orchestra di Puccini a rendere eloquenti i silenzi del dramma.

Who controls our "sonorous knowledge?" Who fixes our musical truth? Are they musicians, the state, the church, philosophers, mathematicians, or scientists? In the context of the years between the defeat of Napoleon and the start of the First World War, the British cultural historian and technologist Edward J. Gillin probes these questions in his book "Sound Authorities: Scientific and Musical Knowledge in Nineteenth-Century Britain.

Rot , “azione coreografica” di Domenico Guaccero (musica) e Amedeo Amodio (coreografia), puo ritenersi lavoro emblematico delle sperimentazioni teatral-musicali ferventi nel contesto romano degli anni ’60-’70, anche per il coinvolgimento, quale scenografo della premiere realizzata al Teatro dell’Opera nel giugno 1973, di un esponente di punta della neo-avanguardia astrattista, il milanese Agostino Bonalumi. La genesi, l’impianto drammaturgico e il duplice orizzonte di senso del lavoro saranno indagati anche attraverso i non esigui schizzi compositivi di Guaccero e la documentazione conservata presso vari archivi con l’obiettivo di mettere in risalto i seguenti elementi: la concezione complessa e analitico-polifonica nella gestione di tutte le componenti in gioco (azione, scenografie e luci, elementi sonori strumentali, vocali o elettronici); il pensiero compositivo essenzialmente ‘informale’, ma non privo di richiami a quello generativo-seriale, di Guaccero; la scelta e la costruzio...

Gypsy Songs Op.55 lied series by one of the Romantic Period composers Antonin Dvořák (1841-1904) was analysed in this study. Antonin Dvořák, who was born in the Czech Republic, had created his own style by blending traditional Western European composition style with the Czech national music by using bohemian rhythms and national instruments. Written by the composer in 1880, "Gypsy Songs Op.55" is the most essential composition of Dvořák in the area of lied. Dvořák composed his lied series on seven poems of the Bohemian romantic poet Adolf Heyduk for the well-known former tenor in Vienna Gustav Walter to vocalize it. The lied series, which does not include the real gypsy melodies, effectively expresses the soul of Czech national music and the independent lifestyle of the Gypsies with its passionate and cheerful dance rhythms, vibrant vocal lines, and lively piano accompaniment. Firstly, the Romantic Period in which Dvořák lived is outlined, his life and music are explained, and the lied formations in the Romantic Period are conveyed in this study. Each song in the series was examined in terms of its meaning, and musical features with interpretative significance. Translations of the poems originally in German are included, and their connections with accompaniment and musical expressions are reviewed. In the research conducted with a descriptive method, the data obtained through scanning are presented and discussed in a wide range, including the text analysis of the works and vocalization features. This study aims to facilitate students and artists who want to study and learn A. Dvořák's "Gypsy Songs Op.55" Lied Series by revealing specific details that can contribute to their works as well as the literature.

A. C. Debussy (1862-1918), who is undoubtedly one of the most influential and impressive names of impressionism in the history of music, transformed poems into music as a result of his interaction with symbolist poets and blended his music with impressionist techniques. Debussy, who has numerous works composed for instruments and vocal music, composed many works especially influenced by the poems of the symbolist poet Paul Marie Verlaine (1844-1896). The unique harmony between the melodies he composed for vocal music and the poems has left a deep impression on both the performers and the listeners.

Halle als Auftragswerk des Salzburger Landestheaters zur Uraufführung. Sie reflektieren unterschiedliche Perspektiven der Konfrontation menschlicher Befindlichkeit mit den Schrecken von Krieg, Unterdrückung und Inhumanität. "Pierre et Luce", die 1989 nach einer Novelle von Romain Rolland und einem Libretto von Attila Böcs komponierte Kammeroper, stellt die kürzeste und zugleich konzentrierteste Ausformung des oben erwähnten Konfliktpotentials dar. Skizzenhaft, gleichsam nur in Andeutungen entfaltet sich ein subtiles Drama der Aporie von Sehnsucht nach Friede, Geborgenheit, Liebe und der Gewißheit tödlicher Bedrohung. Paris in der Zeit des Ersten Weltkrieges bildet den szenischen Rahmen für ein Geschehen, in dem menschliches Fühlen, Ahnungen, Realität und Traumbilder in eins fließen und gerade dadurch die Unmöglichkeit der Erfüllung von Glück angesichts der über alle Menschlichkeit hinweggehenden historischen Ereignisse evident wird. Im Vergleich zu den übrigen Teilen des Triptychons bilden in "Pierre et Luce" tonale Klangfelder einen bedeutenden Teil der kompositorischen Gestaltung sowie eine entscheidende Voraussetzung für den "satt-schwelgerischen Ton" dieser lyrischen Oper.

Karl Kraus und die Zweite Wiener Schule Einleitung Dieser Beitrag greift ein Thema auf, das in meiner Dissertation I schon am Rande gestreift wurde: die interdisziplinäre Verbreitung bestimmter ästhetischer Anschauungen im Wien des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts. Zu dieser Zeit war Wien das kulturelle Zentrum im deutschsprachigen Raum. Künstler aller Disziplinen stellten die Avantgarde; so z. B. in der Literatur Werfe!, Altenberg, Hofmannsthal und Kraus, in der Musik Mahler und die sogenannte Zweite Wiener Schule-Schönberg, Berg und Webernund in der Kunst bzw. Architektur Kandinsky und Loos. Der Kontakt zwischen den Künstlern fand nicht nur innerhalb ihrer jeweiligen Disziplin statt, sondern auch interdisziplinär. Dies kann anhand von Festschriften, Geburtstagsgratulationen und Widmungen leicht erkannt werden:
