Podemos hablar de las artes como una expresión territorial que responde a
preceptos que se inscriben tanto en la tradición de una geografía regional
como de una geografía cultural, aunque ambas posean una tradición diferente, a veces conflictiva e incluso en algunos puntos pareciera que irreconciliables.
En este sentido, para comprender el territorio, como espacio de la razón, la emoción y como creación, todas las artes son y pueden formar parte integrante del proceso de conocimiento geográfico. El presente
artículo tiene dos objetivos centrales: abordar la literatura como fuente de
información en estudios que analizan el paisaje y el territorio, y mostrar
que la novela policiaca tiene una visión espacial amplia, en la cual los conceptos de paisaje, territorio y lugar encuentran una expresión ventajosa.

La narrativa de Chandler, especialmente su novela The Little Sister, proporciona una visión distópica acerca de Hollywood durante el periodo de “sistema de estudios” de la industria cinematográfica norteamericana. Esta imagen desfavorable está en consonancia con los parámetros del género literario que cultivó el escritor: el género negro, que se caracteriza por el sórdido realismo, la presencia de villanos que rompen el orden establecido y la crítica social. Este artículo indaga en las diversas situaciones criminales y en los tipos de personajes que aparecen en esta serie detectivesca: estrellas de cine, dobles, productores, agentes, extras, una infinidad de glamurosas starlets…, de los que el narrador autodiegético (es decir, el detective protagonista) proyecta una imagen nada idealizada.This article examines some characteristics of the series about Dan Turner written Robert Leslie Bellem.In these short stories, crime, intrigue, detective investigation, sexual content and satire are mixed with a colorful and colloquial linguistic style. This chapter was written for a collected volume aiming to expand our understanding of the 1920s – a decade mainly associated with works like "Ulysses" and "The Waste Land" – by exploring literary texts published in 1922 that do not belong to the modernist canon (and are therefore rarely discussed). I offer a reading of A. A. Milne’s only mystery novel, "The Red House Mystery," arguing that it presents an interesting take on the detective genre – one that is paradoxically both highly conventional and highly idiosyncratic. On the one hand, the novel harkens back to the Victorian roots of detective fiction, blending motifs from Arthur Conan Doyle's work with the country-house setting that would later define the Golden Age of detective fiction. On the other hand, Milne’s background in drama influences the novel’s lighthearted and comedic approach to crime writing. With its heavy emphasis on dialogue, "The Red House Mystery" presents detection as "glorious fun," a "profession" performed self-consciously and theatrically by its two amateur detectives. As a result, the novel functions not only as a mystery but also as a meta-mystery, full of intertextual references to earlier detective stories and to the comedy of manners traditions of the nineteenth century.

In the December, 1944, issue of The Atlantic Monthly, Raymond Chandler published “The Simple Art of Murder,” in an attempt to transform critical and public opinion of his work. Chandler was desperate for his work to be considered Literature by the Literati, who regarded detective fiction as boring and unsophisticated fodder for people who move their lips when they read. “The Simple Art of Murder” was hailed as a benchmark in literary criticism, but by criticizing every detective story writer of any sort of note not named Raymond Chandler, and claiming his writing was unlike anything that had preceded it—it was, but not in the way Chandler perceived it—Chandler created his own legend that has arguably become the dominant narrative about the genre. In doing so, Chandler revealed far more about himself and his attitudes than he did about the genre of detective fiction or what was being portrayed in his own detective fiction. He just never understood that his alter-ego, or avatar, Philip Marlowe, is not a heroic latter-day knight errant. Unlike Dashiell Hammett’s Hard-Boiled detective, Sam Spade, Philip Marlowe is a sap, and he plays the sap for the established social, political, economic, and moral order of Los Angeles.

Many argue that Edgar Allan Poe invented the modern detective story or detective fiction as we know it today with his character C. Auguste Dupin. His contribution to this type of story has modelled many works after him, including those of Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie. The primary interest of the detective story lies in uncovering a mystery, arriving at its resolution through a thorough and rational process of investigation. Poe created a plot in which a character external to the police solved a crime that the police could not solve. By using the process of ratiocination, following clues, and pulling loose threads, this external agent or consultant is capable of solving any crime, although it tends to be a murder. The aim of this paper is to analyse to what extent this schema formed in “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” parallels that of many popular TV crime shows, mainly focusing on Castle, specifically on one case. The analysis will focus on the development of the story, the process of ratiocination that allows them to reach a conclusion and point to the murderer, and similarities and differences between the main characters. Additionally, this essay will look for references to Poe’s work in this type of shows, either direct allusions or similar plotlines. Finally, it will draw a conclusion which tackles to which extent modern detective stories are based on Poe’s models and structure.

El mundo del delito y de la conspiración han sido una constante en las ficciones de Roberto Arlt desde sus novelas y primeras intervenciones periodísticas, pero puede decirse que en su producción final se reformulan sus modos de representación. A fines de la década del treinta y en los primeros años de la década siguiente, Arlt publica en las revistas El Hogar y Mundo Argentino cuentos de criminales y de espías, cercanos al policial y a la literatura de espionaje desde el punto de vista de los modos de narrar y de los rasgos genéricos, del todo inéditos en su obra anterior, que ponen en juego nuevas formas del relato en su prosa narrativa. RESUMO

O artigo é dedicado à ligação entre a produção narrativa de Pessoa, em particular os contos policiais, e o cinema; o objeto central de análise são alguns fragmentos de um guião escrito por Luísa Costa Comes no âmbito de uma adaptação televisiva da série Quaresma, Decifrador. O objetivo é identificar as fontes e refletir sobre o processo de tradução intersemiótica levado a cabo pela autora.

ABSTRACT

The article is dedicated to the connection between Pessoa’s narrative production, particularly the detective stories, and cinema. The central object of analysis consists of some fragments from a script written by Luísa Costa Gomes as part of a television adaptation of the series Quaresma, Decifrador. The aim is to identify the sources and reflect on the process of intersemiotic translation undertaken by the author.

Detective stories belong to one of the most popular genres within the field of children’s literature. Through presenting the reader with a mystery, suspects and clues, detectives invite readers to participate with the in-text detectives to solve the crime depicted. It is this ludic nature that makes the detective genre particularly appealing to child-readers. Through playful approaches to form, children’s texts tend to stress interactivity in ways that other texts do not: children’s texts are frequently as physical and kinetic as they are cognitive and emotional. This interactivity is further foregrounded in children’s detective fiction, which has inherent interactivity that challenges the reader to engage in detective behaviour (e.g. considering a witness statement’s validity, or discerning which clues are relevant or red herrings). The genre’s immersive potential may be intensified through children’s literature’s own unique affordances. Higher levels of interactivity in turn correspond to increased demands on child-readers, who must participate actively to create meaning with the text.
The detective genre builds suspense by raising suspicions about the information provided by a text, and causes high-level cognitive engagement. Picturebooks, due to their visual element, have an additional layer which readers are to investigate. This visual layer co-creates meaning with the text, and must therefore also be treated with high-cognitive engagement and, in the case of detective fiction, suspicion. This is also, however, a layer where the presumed cognitive abilities of the audience have to be catered to so the doctrine of fair play, according to which readers have access to the same information as the detective, can be adhered to, and the reader positively challenged by the game of detection.
In this paper, I will analyse the cognitive impact of the interactive nature of different forms within the detective genre and its links to interactivity, ranging from Iain Smyth’s pop-up whodunit picturebooks, to the Kugelblitz interactive books, to the Sam Schoffel readalongs. Each form has different methods of playing with multimodality and materiality in order to encourage detecting behaviour, and through that, has different manners of crafting detecting storyworlds. Because the detective formula pushes the reader to engage with the narrative in a ludic manner, the children’s detective book is an inherently co-creative form. Through engaging with and manipulating these detective texts, readers both co-create the story and are co-created as detectives by the narrative through participation in detective behaviours. In my analyses I focus primarily on those elements of the texts which arouse readerly suspicion, enable fair play, and increase (detective) genre literacy, thereby building little detectives.

The Ambivalent Detective in Victorian Sensation Novels studies how the detective as a literary character evolved through the mid-nineteenth century in England, as seen in sensation novels. In contrast to most assumptions about the English detective, Yoon argues that the detective was more often tolerated than admired following the establishment of professional detectives in the London Metropolitan Police Force in 1842. Through studying the historical and literary contexts between the 1840’s to the 1860’s, Yoon argues that the detective was seen as a suspicious, even mistrusted and disdained, figure who was nonetheless viewed as necessary to combat rising levels of crime. The detective as a literary character responded to the often contradictory values and aspirations of the middle class, representing an independent masculinity and laying claim to scientific authority. This study surveys novels by Charles Dickens, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, and Wilkie Collins, alongside lesser-known writers like William Russell, James Redding Ware (pseudonym Andrew Forrester), and William Stephens Hayward. This book contributes to the study of mid-nineteenth-century Victorian culture and connects with broader studies of the detective fiction genre.

El trabajo reflexiona sobre un grupo de crónicas de Roberto Arlt y Enrique González Tuñón publicadas a fines de la década del treinta y en los primeros años de la del cuarenta en las que aparecen distintos procedimientos para pensar la cuestión de los escritores periodistas y sus intervenciones en diarios masivos como El Mundo. Textos vinculados temáticamente (la guerra europea es la constante incisiva en el corpus y algunos temas de actualidad o curiosidades) y con procedimientos similares ("glosa" de la noticia, literaturización del dato de la realidad, expansión del cable), los artículos de la prensa permiten reflexionar sobre el cruce entre ficción y crónica o "el relato de los hechos" en un momento en el que estos escritores tienen un lugar ganado tanto en el campo de las letras como también en el ámbito del periodismo.

Este artigo tem por objetivo apresentar o levantamento completo de todos os volumes publicados pela Coleção Amarela, da Livraria do Globo de Porto Alegre, ao longo de seus quase 26 anos de existência. It is not widely known nowadays that T.S. Eliot had a passion for detective stories. He held Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie in particularly high regard, and kept up with the evolving contemporary genre, frequently reviewing new tales of mystery and detection in The Criterion, the literary magazine he both created and edited. He even reviewed a couple of ‘True Crime’ books. Mystery and detective novels had grown out of Victorian sensation fiction and were still a relatively new form in the heyday of The Criterion in the interwar years, and Eliot’s endorsement certainly helped authors and publishers, adding literary gravitas to what was essentially still a guilty pleasure. Eliot did, however, draw the line at what were becoming known as ‘thrillers’, for example the Bulldog Drummond stories of ‘Sapper’ (H. C. McNeile), Sax Rohmer’s Fu Manchu series, and The Mind of Mr. J. G. Reeder by Edgar Wallace. Once described by George Orwell as ‘for pure snootiness it beats anything I have ever seen,’ The Criterion was never going to get behind popular fiction. Eliot viewed these pulp novels as contrived and inelegant, relying on shocks and plot twists over the more sober reasoning and character development of the masters of the form like the ‘Queen of Crime’, Agatha Christie. But for Eliot, the pinnacle of English detective fiction, the text against which all others must be weighed, measured, and counted, was not by Christie, or Dorothy L. Sayers, or even Conan Doyle. Instead, it was a novel that by the early 20th century had largely been forgotten – The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins...

This article is an in-depth analysis of the short story “Angelica farfalla” by Primo Levi, developed by investigating four hints scattered in the narration. Related to biology, poetry, myth and anthropology, these hints help constructing an argument in favour of a monogenetic origin of humankind. At the same time, they bring to the fore new elements that define Levi’s anthropological background and its role in his science fiction.

In this study, I make audible a conversation in Alf Layla wa-Layla (The Thousand and One Nights) on the meaning and application of justice. Without assuming that Alf Layla constituted an organized whole, the study identifies, in the frame narrative and the first two chains of stories—all three understood to belong to the earliest bundle—a debate on the coincidence of successful interpretation and just rulership. By the end of these tales, i.e., by the twenty-seventh night, a complete tale is told. In these stories, I propose, Alf Layla adopts an attitude that privileges multiplicity over singular interpretation, in a fashion that affirms thecontingency of ethical questions.  The popularity of Alf Layla and the afterlives it enjoyed up to our present times—in the Arab world and the West—need not eclipse or substitute the Arabo-Islamic character the work came to exhibit, and the ethical questions it set out to address. El ilustrador contemporáneo Benjamin Lacombe ilustró la década pasada una selección de relatos de E. A. Poe (1809-1849). De entre todas las obras pictóricas que elaboró, este trabajo selecciona las ilustraciones de "Ligeia" y "Morella", dos de los cuentos más aclamados del norteamericano, donde las protagonistas son vistas por el artista como seres monstruosos y malignos. Lacombe decide aplicar una lectura que sugiere que la perversidad y lo macabro proceden de las figuras femeninas. Las mujeres de las historias son representadas como criaturas perversas y quiméricas, fruto tanto de la herencia artística surrealista de Lacombe como del imaginario gótico de E. A. Poe, que ofrecen la posibilidad de entender la figura femenina como amenazante y teratológica.

Domestic television series constitute one of the most remarkable products of Turkish television programming industry. Over the forty years of television drama production in Turkey, adaptations from historical or literary sources, and from foreign television series become a significant part of total production output of domestic programming. Adapted versions of television dramas from foreign television series differ in certain aspects from the original show. The differences mainly arise from cultural factors. The findings of comparative analysis of television series adapted from a foreign original are often quite interesting and seminal in seeing the ways how culture defines its own boundaries, peculiarities, sacred values, and taboos. Television producers who make the domestic version of a foreign television series, are expected to take into account the controversial cultural and moral references such as compatibility with the "national family structure," the shared values and so on. The paper briefly details the experience of Turkish television with adaptations within a historical perspective, and it analyses the Turkish adaptation of Danish television series Forbrydelsen. The mentioned Danish series which is a sample of police procedural genre was also remade for American cable network AMC in 2011. The paper aims to comparatively examine five episodes from each first seasons of these three television series that based on the same story. The analysis explains how the adaptation processes participate in construction of culture, and in the perception of crime and justice by effectively using the narrative, generic and cultural differences.

Yerli televizyon draması Türkiye televizyonlarının en dikkat çekici üretimleri arasındadır. Türkiye’de, televizyon drama üretiminin kırk yılı aşkın tarihinde, tarihsel ya da edebi kaynaklardan ve yabancı televizyon dizilerinden yapılan uyarlamalar ve yeniden yapımlar yerli programcılığın toplam üretiminin kayda değer bir kısmını oluşturur. Yabancı televizyon dizilerinden yapılan uyarlamalar ya da yeniden yapımlar orijinal programdan çeşitli bakımlardan farklılık gösterir. Bu farklılıklar önemli ölçüde kültürel boyuttan kaynaklanır. Uyarlamaların ya da yeniden yapımların karşılaştırmalı analizi genellikle kültürün kendi sınırlarını, özgüllüklerini, kutsallaştırdığı değerlerini ve tabularını görebilmek bakımından oldukça ilginç ve ufuk açıcıdır. Yabancı bir televizyon programının yerli versiyonunu yeniden üreten yapımcıların, örneğin “Türk aile yapısına uygunluk” gibi ya da “paylaşılan değerler” gibi tartışmalı kültürel ve ahlaki referansları dikkate almaları beklenir. Bu makale, Türkiye televizyonlarının uyarlama ve yeniden yapım tecrübesini tarihsel bir perspektifle kısaca ele alıyor ve Danimarka televizyon dizisi Forbrydelsen’in (The Killing/Cinayet) Türkiye uyarlamasını analiz ediyor. Sözü geçen Danimarka dizisi, “polis işlemleri” adı verilen bir alt türün örneği olup, 2011 yılında Amerikan kablo şebekesi AMC için de The Killing adıyla yeniden üretilen bir dizidir. Bu çalışma aynı televizyon hikâyesinin sözü edilen Danimarka, ABD ve Türkiye örneklerinin ilk sezonlarından beşer bölümü karşılaştırmalı olarak inceliyor. Analiz uyarlama süreçlerinin Cinayet’i eve getirirken, anlatısal, türsel ve kültürel kodları kullanarak, suç ve adalet algısının ve kültürün inşasına nasıl katıldığını açıklamaya çalışıyor.

American fiction since 2000 has successfully resisted neat classification by displaying hybridity and versatility that move beyond the postmodern paradigm. This paper starts from Irmtraud Huber's claim that a turn from deconstruction to reconstruction in recent American fiction has been achieved through the use of the fantastic mode, and from Andrew Hoberek's statement that popular genres have been conferred full literary status in American fiction after postmodernism. It then focuses on the peculiar blend of alternative history, political thriller and noir detective story in Michael Chabon's The Yiddish Policemen's Union (2007), and on Chabon's use of genre to explore the ways in which the shifting of geopolitical boundaries turns individuals and groups into victims or winners of territorial rearrangements.

In this paper, I raise a problem for the widely accepted view that knowledge is degettierized justified true belief. The problem is that one can acquire degettierized justified true beliefs even if one is unable to apply those beliefs in practice or use them in the formation of further justified beliefs. Such beliefs, even though degettierized, justified and true, hardly amount to knowledge. So a fifth part of the definition of knowledge is called for. As a solution, I suggest that beliefs count as knowledge only when they are structured in such a way that they can be employed in the process of belief-or knowledge-formation. This required structure can be explicated in terms of Wiśniewski"s logic of questions. In order for a belief to count as knowledge, I will argue, it is necessary for it to be liable to figure in an erotetic argument.

This study examines the existence of crimes committed by the protagonists of Edgar Allan Poe's short stories "Berenice" and "The Tell-Tale Heart". This study aims to describe the crimes committed by the main character of both short stories. The data sources used are short stories, books, and website. In this study, we categorize the data into subchapters and analyze them. The authors use the theory of Maguire et al., 2012. Crime description. When analyzing research data using descriptive qualitative methods. According to research results, some of the acts included in the two short stories that fall under the category of crime are horrific.

Our 2022 Framing (Serial) Killing: Changing Narratives conference demonstrated that the turns in the (serial) killing narratives, including the decline of the celebrity-like status the perpetrators enjoyed in the 1980s and 1990s, growing popularity of police professionals, more pronounced female characters, or victim-oriented discourse, are a work in progress. Continuing our attempts at re-framing the academic discourses of (serial) killer fictions so that the focus is shifted away from the killer as an anti-hero and directed towards other characters and audiences of these fictions, their contexts and their current cultural impact, this time we would like to focus on the figure of the detective.

This article focuses on the theme of the family, and more particularly on the figure of the orphan, in the first volumes of Jerome Charyn's detective series (the Isaac Sidel cycle). All of Charyn's work explores his own family origins, which allows him to write a vast autobiographical fresco that he superimposes on the history of New York since the beginning of the twentieth century, revisiting the great period of Jewish immigration from Eastern Europe, the construction of modern New York and the establishment of multiple social and criminal systems. In his police saga, Charyn develops several networks of links bringing together his characters, the common thread being Commissioner Sidel himself, a pathetic and ogre-like paternal figure who reigns over his family as well as over his men or his recurring enemies like a hallucinated Saturn obsessed with an orphan whom he once broke. The figure of the lonely orphan still embodies the Melvillian dream of new human relationships, fraternal ones, a dream which Isaac Sidel, faithful to his contradictions, both pursues and annihilates. Hay que agradecer una vez más a la profesora Rosa Marta Gómez Pato la labor que está llevando a cabo para incrementar la, hasta hace bien poco, escasísima nómina de autores alemanes traducidos a la lengua gallega, que recientemente incluye el relato emblemático de Theodor Storm, Der Schimmelreiter (O xinete do cabalo branco, Santiago de Compostela: Hugin e Munin, 2015), traducción ya reseñada en esta misma publicación.

Desde su consolidacion como genero, la novela negra se ha caracterizado por el desarrollo de sagas literarias protagonizadas por un mismo personaje. Este articulo expone las razones por las que la serialidad se ha convertido en una de las constantes del genero negro y estudia como influye en la creacion y en la relacion entre los autores y su publico. Ademas, traza un recorrido por las principales series novelescas de la literatura negra espanola contemporanea, analizando sus caracteristicas.

El propósito de este estudio es el de realizar una cartografía sintetizada (pero crítica) de la representación de temáticas ecotecnológicas en ficciones solarpunk estadounidenses, principalmente a través de las compilaciones de historias cortas disponibles en el mercado editorial. Así, el texto analiza la evolución del género desde su conceptualización original como ciencia ficción blanda hasta vertientes actuales en las que predomina un interés renacido en la ciencia ficción dura. Estas últimas muestran un interés en visualizar herramientas tecnológicas potencialmente implementables para paliar los efectos del cambio climático, así como para solventar otros aspectos de la degradación ambiental de corte antropogénico. El texto se inicia con una breve exploración de la historia del género para posteriormente abordar tanto los comentarios de los editores de los compendios de relato breve publicados enmarcados en estas ficciones como algunas de las historias que lo componen. El texto, adicionalmente, explora la forma en la que el solarpunk, claramente en sintonía con la filosofía poshumanista, ha modelado su estética, mensaje y ethos político a lo largo de la última década con el objeto de visibilizar posibles futuros optimistas en los que la industrialización ha podido sobrevivir y coexistir con un planeta autosostenible en el Antropoceno.

Sherlock Holmes es un personaje emblemático del género policial. Su popularidad lo ha convertido en uno de los mitos más perdurables que engendró la Modernidad. Como en innumerables regiones, Sudamérica no escapó a su magnetismo. Luego de la publicación de los primeros relatos de Arthur Conan Doyle, a comienzos del siglo XX, proliferaron, en esta parte del continente, parodias, pastiches y apócrifos que retomaban el personaje del detective inglés para nuevas aventuras. En Argentina, la aparición de la revista Sherlock Holmes sirvió como catalizador de este fenómeno. En sus páginas, se publicaron diversas
narraciones vinculadas al personaje, que funcionaron como verdaderos experimentos para el relato policial. De entre estas producciones, destacan los cuentos de Julián J. Bernat y Jack Lumen. Estos apelan al modelo holmesiano para ensayar nuevas fórmulas narrativas, al tiempo que dejan entrever algunas de las cuestiones que preocuparon a los escritores del género en las primeras décadas del siglo.

La revista Sherlock Holmes, semanario que se editó entre 1911 y 1913, se caracterizó por ser la primera publicación, editada en Buenos Aires, dedicada exclusivamente a la crónica y el relato policial. Este rasgo la convierte en un material privilegiado para estudiar cómo se conforma el campo del género a comienzos del siglo XX. En este artículo, nos proponemos analizar de qué manera la revista contribuyó al proceso de conformación de un público lector aficionado a las ficciones criminales. En este sentido, consideramos que Sherlock Holmes construyó, a partir del despliegue de una serie de estrategias, un lector modelo que, basado en la matriz perceptiva del policial clásico, promovió sus modos de leer.
