Marina Caffiero, The Religious Problem The link between politics and religion during the revolutionary phase has played a central role in Italy but has somehow escaped much scrutiny. The article aims at analyzing this relationship following two research options : first, by examining Catholic reactionary reorganisation in the face of revolutionary rupture ; second, by reviewing the construction of a new civic religion and political theology which offers a key to better understanding the discourse and practice of republican political culture. It is here that the sacred nature and legitimacy of secular power acquire a dimension in which the echo of religious tradition still resounds. In the construction of this new civic religion the political usage of ancient Rome is also at play.

Öz: Lu Xun, Modern Çin edebiyatının önemli yazarlarından birisidir. Bireysel özgürlük, modernleşme ve toplumsal eleştiri gibi konular üzerinden geleneksel toplum yapısıyla modernleşme arasındaki çatışmaları ele almıştır. Edebiyat kariyerinin yanı sıra fikir insanı olarak ta Çin toplumu üzerinde büyük bir etki bırakan Lu Xun, Batı medeniyetini tanımasıyla birlikte Çin toplumunun geri kaldığını anlamıştır. Lu Xun geri kalmışlığa farkındalık oluşturmak için eserlerinde birçok eleştiriler yapmıştır. Yazar feodal toplum yapısının ve ataerkil aile yapısının bireyler üzerinde yaptığı etkiyi eleştirir ve Çin'inin modernleşmesi gerektiğini söyler. Çin toplumunun bozulduğunu gören yazar tıp eğitimini yarıda bırakıp edebiyat okumaya karar vermiştir. Toplumda çürümüşlük varsa bedenlerden önce zihinlerin tedavi edilmesi gerektiğini vurgulamıştır. Lu Xu'nun eserleri İdeolojik ilişkilerin ve Kültür devriminin entelektüel kısmını meydana getirdiği için Mao'yu etkilemiştir. Kültür devriminin altını doldurması, devrimcilik duygusunu aşılaması ve zihinlerin bağımsızlaşmasına neden olduğu için Lu Xun eserleri Çin toplumunu etkilemiştir. Lu Xun bu açıdan edebiyatçıları etkilemekle kalmamış aynı zamanda politikacıları da etkilemiştir. Yazar Notlar Lambanın Altında ve Yabani Otlar eserleriyle bireylerin toplumsal baskılarını, modernleşme sürecini ve içsel çatışmalarını derinlemesine işlemiştir. Bu iki eserde Lu Xun, bireylerin kimlik arayışlarını ve geleneksel toplum normlarıyla olan mücadelesini ele alır. "Notlar Lambanın Altında" ve "Yaban Otları" eserleri üzerinden birey-toplum ilişkilerindeki gerilimler analiz edilip Lu Xun'un modernleşme sürecindeki önemi incelenecektir.

Nos últimos 30 anos, a historiografia se deu conta do fato que as ordens militares eram também instituições religiosas, cujos membros estavam vinculados a uma forma de vida regular, sendo os vetores de uma espiritualidade original. Mas uma abordagem internalista destas instituições ainda não foi verdadeiramente superada, no sentido em que os historiadores continuam procurando discernir uma identidade religiosa que seria própria a cada ordem, considerando, por exemplo, a liturgia ou o culto dos santos. Entretanto, pouca atenção tem sido dada ao fato de que esta forma especial de vida regular era amplamente aberta à sociedade e ao mundo laico. De fato, as ordens militares ofereceram, aos fiéis, horizontes adaptados a suas expectativas espirituais, ao lado do clero secular e das ordens mendicantes, que elas, em certo sentido, têm antecipado. É na cidade, verdadeiro laboratório do “policentrismo religioso”, que os frades das ordens militares desenvolveram práticas piedosas e dimensões apropriadas à atração dos fiéis. A partir de exemplos tomados principalmente do Midi da França e da Itália, nós analisaremos, de início, o papel desempenhado pelas comendadorias na integração dos fiéis através das estruturas confraternais e da difusão da piedade testamentaria.  Nós abordaremos, em seguida, a confluência destas casas na “religião cívica”, ou seja, questionaremos a capacidade dos frades a promover ou a manter devoções apoiadas pelas autoridades municipais e pelas diferentes componentes do corpo cívico. Notadamente, isso incluía a veneração dos santos, a manutenção de lugares de culto frequentados pela população e a participação nas grandes festas cívicas, assim como nas procissões. Enfim, os frades contribuíram ao bem comum de múltiplas maneiras, das quais nós somente mencionaremos as obras de caridade. Embora evoquemos brevemente certas confrarias militarizadas que visavam impor uma ordem moral a certas sociedades urbanas, nós nos limitamos principalmente às três grandes ordens ditas universais: o Templo, o Hospital e, mais pontualmente, a ordem Teutônica. A cronologia adotada pretendia ser ampla, porém ela depende, na realidade, das fontes locais. Se certas práticas de enquadramento são bem documentadas para os séculos XIII-XIV, é necessário, com frequência, esperar o fim da Idade Média para ver como as comendadorias participaram na manutenção de cultos cívicos ou de outras devoções locais.

Son yüzyılda dünya genelinde giderek yaygınlaşan Yeni Dinî Hareketler, toplumsal ve bireysel ihtiyaçların değişimi ile şekillenmektedir. Özellikle modernleşme süreçleri, bireylerin manevi ve ruhsal tatmin arayışlarına yanıt verme çabasında olan alternatif inanç sistemlerinin gelişmesine zemin hazırlamıştır. Bu bağlamda, Yeni Dinî Hareketler "akılcılık öncesi, " "akılcı" ve "akılcılık-ötesi" gibi kategoriler altında incelenmektedir. Bu kategoriler, Yeni Dinî Hareketlerin rasyonel temellerinin ve toplumsal işlevlerinin anlaşılmasına katkı sağlamaktadır. Örneğin, "akılcılık öncesi" dönem, geleneksel inançların yaygın olduğu; "akılcı" dönem, mantıklı ve eleştirel düşünmenin ön plana çıktığı; "akılcılık-ötesi" ise manevi deneyimlerin ve bireysel arayışların önem kazandığı bir süreç olarak tanımlanabilir. 2 Yeni Dinî Hareketlerin, geleneksel inanç sistemlerinin yeterli gelmediği durumlarda ortaya çıktığı kabul edilmektedir. This essay argues that baseball is the civic religion of the US and the Americas. I much the same way that the civitas is gathered for ritual in ancient civilizations, essentially humanistic (i.e., secular), the Americans (and increasingly the world) gather in spaces set aside and possessed of a time that moves according to virtualized rules that follow narratives of heroic drama, mythic structures enacted in repetition with slight contingencies in outcome. The asymmetries and quirks of given parks and team histories contribute to the atmosphere of the sacred.

La présence des ordres du Temple et de l'Hôpital-à partir du milieu du XII e siècle-et des Antonins-quatre décennies plus tard-prouve le caractère pleinement urbain de la ville neuve de Montferrand. Les ordres militaires et hospitaliers durent se faire une place dans un paysage religieux fortement concurrentiel. Aussi, la normalisation des relations avec les congrégations bénédictines anciennement implantées sur le territoire passa par une série d'arbitrages de l'épiscopat et de la papauté. Les frères répondaient parfaitement aux attentes spirituelles des élites bourgeoises, tout en partageant des intérêts communs dans le marché de la terre et la circulation monétaire. Par leur action charitable et l'aura de sacralité qui les liait à la Terre sainte, Antonins, Hospitaliers et Templiers contribuèrent encore au bien commun et à la religion civique. Montferrand s'imposa encore comme un lieu central dans l'organisation administrative et territoriale des ordres eux-mêmes. Quant aux dominations supérieures, les relations furent cordiales avec les seigneurs successifs de la ville, alors que la monarchie veilla surtout à intégrer ces institutions religieuses à l'ordre du royaume.

The imperial proclamation carried out by Decius in the middle of the 3rd c. AD represents a fundamental turning point when it comes to understanding the changes that occurred in late Antiquity in religious matters. The imposition from government agencies that all citizens of the Empire had to make sacrifices to the gods broke with the characteristic religious 'freedom' of the Greco-Roman world. Due to this, all those individuals who, for reasons of faith, did not comply with the ordinances were left out of the law, highlighting the case of Christians for the use they made of the event to build their history. Consequently, the sources on this subject are scarce and, most of the time, manipulated by their authors. However, there is reliable evidence about the historical fact, which will be the main axis of this chapter, the so-called libelli, papyrus certificates that ratified the fulfillment of the sacrifices demanded and that allow us to reconstruct how events unfolded in this regard during the years 249 and 250 AD.

La religion ocupaba un lugar mas bien secundario en las relaciones de sucesos, tal como se puede comprobar en el caso de la prensa catalana. Sin embargo, las relaciones de sucesos eran una pieza esencial de la denominada por algunos religion civica, a saber: una serie recurrente de manifestaciones religiosas de caracter publico (procesiones, translaciones de reliquias, te deums, etc.) auspiciadas o bendecidas por las autoridades urbanas y cuya finalidad mas o menos confesa era la de reforzar tanto la cohesion social como el consenso politico local. Las relaciones de sucesos, pues, no eran unicamente una forma de dejar constancia de los eventos de este genero, sino que formaban parte del mismo, siquiera fuera a posteriori, cuando el acontecimiento se transformaba en una narracion articulada y llena de sentido para la posteridad. Por ello, constituian asimismo un genero de propaganda tanto religiosa como politica; aunque no siempre tan eficaz como a veces se presupone.

Chapeau à venir Un panneau inédit de Domenico Ghirlandaio peint pour Pise par Nicoletta Pons xv e sièCle U n panneau récemment acquis par le musée du Louvre représente L'Apparition du Christ à la Vierge après la Résurrection (fig. 1, 2, 3) 1 , un épisode absent du Nouveau Testament comme des Évangiles apocryphes. On en trouve la source dans les Cent Méditations de saint Bonaventure sur la Vie de Jésus Christ du Pseudo-Bonaventure (chapitre LXXIX : De la Résurrection de notre Seigneur Jésus Christ comment il apparut d'abord à sa mère le dimanche), un ouvrage composé à la fin du xiii e siècle. L'auteur y rapporte que le jour de la Résurrection, le Christ est apparu à sa mère en larmes afin de la réconforter en lui parlant affectueusement 2. C'est ce dialogue que Domenico Ghirlandaio (Florence 1448-Florence 1494) a figuré dans le panneau : le fils s'adresse à sa mère en la saluant d'une phrase que l'artiste a rapportée en lettres capitales rouges se détachant sur le fond d'or : SALVE SANCTA PARENS, ce à quoi la mère répond : SALVE.FILI.MI.IHS.R / EX.INCLITE.REDEMP/ TOR.MUNDI 3. Le Christ porte ici les signes manifestes de son sacrifice : on distingue ses plaies sur les pieds, les mains et le flanc droit. La Vierge est pour sa part représentée à un âge avancé, la tête voilée, vêtue d'un costume similaire à celui que porte sainte Élisabeth dans La Visitation de Domenico Ghirlandaio (musée du Louvre, voir fig. 6). Elle est agenouillée dans une sorte de petite cour fermée sur les côtés par des murets de marbre feint, allusion à l'hortus conclusus. Ce type d'espace est analogue à celui qui apparaît dans certains tondi florentins figurant L'Adoration de l'Enfant (Botticini, La Vierge adorant l'Enfant avec saint Jean Baptiste et cinq Anges, Florence, Galleria Palatina, Palazzo Pitti), même si le peintre a ici évacué toute référence florale 4 .

Contribution of Alfonso V the Magnanimous to the Popularization of Catalan Culinary Customs in the Kingdom of Napl es in the 15th century The wars for Naples ended in 1442 with the victory of Alfonso V the Magnanimous, the ruler of the Crown of Aragon (1416–1458). The emergence of foreign authority in southern Italy entailed the transfer of the Catalan culture, language and customs to the area of Italian Mezzogiorno. In this process, Catalan culinary traditions which developed at the end of the fourteenth century also occupied an important place. L’enjeu de cette contribution est de dégager l’apport des manuscrits juridiques dans le renouveau de l’iconographie des vertus dans l’art italien du xive siècle. Les programmes décoratifs de ces manuscrits, trop souvent mésestimés, sont doublement intéressants car ils permettent, d’une part, de dégager la dynamique des processus de circulation et de transfert iconographiques, particulièrement fertiles au Trecento, et, d’autre part, de reconstituer la richesse de la culture visuelle des juristes italiens au xive siècle qui repose autant sur la théologie scolastique que sur la littérature antique. W szadkowskich zapiskach radzieckich i wójtowsko-ławniczych znaj­dują się 42 akty ostatniej woli (z lat 1446–1502), co jest znaczącą liczbą, m.in. w po­równaniu z sąsiednimi miastami. W artykule wykorzystane zostały również informacje o czterech pojedynczych legatach pobożnych, nie mających charakteru testamentów, ale pokazujących istotne rysy pobożności mieszczańskiej. W sumie analizowany materiał badawczy obejmuje dyspozycje wydane przez 61 mieszczan (część zapisów była sporzą­dzona wspólnie przez małżeństwa). Wyniki kwerendy przeprowadzonej w aktach miej­skich potwierdzają wcześniejsze ustalenia dotyczące relatywnie wysokiego poziomu kultury pisma mieszkańców późnośredniowiecznego Szadku, a także pozwalają lepiej poznać procedury spisywania testamentów i rolę władz miejskich jako organu nadzo­rującego tego rodzaju działania. RESUMEN. La interpretación de la obra de Rousseau desde las categorías propias de la teoría sociológica da lugar a una reconstrucción de las propuestas del autor basada en aquellos conceptos fundamentales de la disciplina que serían asentados después por los sociólogos clásicos del siglo XIX. Obviamente, estos conceptos no se encuentran en los escritos de Rousseau en los términos de una teoría formalizada, pero sí como nociones o ideas de gran valor intelectual. En el presente trabajo procedemos a mostrar las grandes líneas de la teoría social de Rousseau. Se expone de este modo nuestra reconstrucción de la visión rousseauniana de la historia humana, de la condición del hombre, de la acción social y de la sociedad como totalidad, teorías que conforman una ontología claramente atravesada por la creencia en la alienación y negatividad consustanciales a los fenómenos sociales. ABSTRACT. The interpretation of Rousseau's writings from categorical fields of sociological theory make way for a reconstruction of the author's proposals based on fundamental sociological concepts that would later be laid out by classic 19* century sociologists. Obviously, these concepts are not found in Rousseau's work in terms of a formal theory as so much as notions or ideas of great intellectual valué. In this paper we proceed to draw out the social theory lines from Rousseau's work. Henee we put forth our reconstruction of a rousseaunian visión of human history, mankind's condition, social action and society as a whole. Dans l'Italie de la Renaissance, ce sont les vêtements qui sont le plus couramment mis en gage par ceux qui cherchent à obtenir des prêts auprès des banquiers juifs et du Monte di Pietà. Des robes, des chemises et même des chaussures sont mis en gage, et les vêtements féminins le sont plus souvent que les vêtements masculins. Cet article examine les divers types de vêtements que les emprunteurs-hommes et femmes-offraient de mettre en gage, dans le but de déterminer leur qualité et leur valeur, et de cerner ainsi l'identité de ces clients. En prenant appui sur cette thématique, cet article montre comment l'analyse des changements de types de vêtements mis en gage à la fin du XV e et au XVI e siècle peut nous aider à mieux comprendre les changements de motivations et d'identités des emprunteurs de cette époque.

Although city dwellers lived together in a clearly defined urban space3 they remained a heterogeneous group, making it unclear whether or not they can legitimately be considered 'an urban community'. Many inhabitants had not been born in town but migrated there in search of work or in the hope of being able to benefit from the social services. Mobility between towns was also considerable. Citizenship {poorterschap) was not available for everyone, nor was it aspired to by everyone. Social oppositions and political tensions-much as the previous chapters have shown-did not always make integration into urban society easy for either the poor or the rich. Nevertheless3 historians frequently present the medieval town as a communej a community in which collective rituals represented or even effected unity. In that narrative, religion is seen as a binding agent. The Reformation, on the contrary, supposedly functioned as a divisive force. For the Low Countries, this split even seems to be literal: the Dutch Revolt (1568-1648) provided for a de facto partitioning of the Burgundian-Habsburg Netherlands into a Catholic South and a Protestant North. Few will deny that the Reformation was in essence 'an urban event'.1 Conceiving of this urban Reformation properly from a medieval perspective is not as obvious, however. A nuanced use of the concept 'civic religion', whereby in effect town and religion are firmly linked to each other, can resolve this matter. In the 1990s AndréVauchez defined 'civic religion' as a conscious form of appropriating religious institutions, practices and values on the part of civic authorrties, with the intention of giving the urban community a sacral status as well as legitimising civic authority. The purpose of this research is to analyze the dynamic processes of collective identity by examining the relationship between New Orleans and its professional football team, the Saints, after Hurricane Katrina. Much of the discourse written on American professional sports focuses on economic transactions between player and franchise or franchise and city. This study explores sports from a cultural perspective to understand the perceived social values provided to the host community. This case study spans the years from 2006 to 2013 and discusses several major events, including the Hurricane Katrina disaster, the reopening of the Superdome, the Saints winning a league championship and subsequent cheating scandal, and the city's hosting of Super Bowl XLVII. Using a mixed-method approach of content analysis, in-person interviews, and participant observation, this research demonstrates how post-Hurricane Katrina events altered the collective identity in New Orleans. Additionally, it explores how the interaction of sports, identity, and ritual served to create a civic religion in New Orleans. Finally, the research examines the impact of this religious devotion on New Orleans' tourist economy.

The present article commences analyzing the origins and influences of the religious discourse on the configuration of the modern constitutional discourse and the contributions of the jus-positivism in the consolidation of this sacred-civil language. The second issue is the definition of the U.S. Constitution as a mixed and not as a democratic constitution, with regard to the influences of Plato, Aristotle, Cicero and Polybius to the Drafters of the first modern constitutional text; stability and equilibrium took preference over democracy in a wide sense. I also analyze how the Drafter's decision has conditioned the modern constitutional system up to the present. Keywords Modern and ancient constitutionalism. The role of God. Torah. Sosyolojik fenomenoloji yöntemine dayanan bu araştırmanın temel amacı Türkiye Sosyalist Solunun anlam sistemindeki temel unsurları ve anlam sistemlerini nasıl inşa ettiklerini betimlemektir. Bu betimleme üzerinden sosyalist anlam sistemi ile geleneksel dinsel anlam sistemleri arasındaki benzerlikler keşfedilmekte ve çözümlenmektedir. Böylelikle dinsel deneyimin modern kültürel dönüşümle farklı formlarda kendini gösterdiğini ortaya koymak ve moderniteyle birlikte dinin toplumsal hayatta etkisinin azaldığı yönündeki klasik sekülerleşme kuramına yönelik kritiklere katkı sunmak çalışmanın amaçları arasındadır.
Tarihsel bir aktarımla Türkiye Sosyalist Solunda beş akımın belirgin olduğu iddia edilmektedir. Araştırma boyunca çift yönlü bir kodlama, kategorileştirme ve tematik betimleme yürütülmüştür. Bir taraftan din kuramları ve dinler tarihi üzerine yürütülen okumalar diğer taraftan saha araştırması ve kaynak taraması sonucunda belirlenen şu yedi tema altında sosyalist anlam sisteminin dinsel niteliği gösterilmektedir: Ontolojik Güvenlik Kaynağı Olarak Sosyalist Anlam Sistemi, Kolektif Belleğin Kurulması, Ölüm Fikriyle Mücadele, Kişilik Kültünün Oluşturulması, Mekânın ve Zamanın Kutsallaşması, Zorunlu Kutsal Şiddet Olarak Devrim Fikri ve Sosyalist Ahlak ve Topluluk.
Türkiye Sosyalist Solu örneğinde sosyalist anlam sisteminin geleneksel dinsel anlam sistemleri gibi üç temel özelliğe sahip olduğu söylenebilmektedir: maddi ve sosyal gerçekliği bütünsel bir biçimde anlama ihtiyacını cevaplayarak insanı belirsizlik tehdidinden korumak, kutsal bir ontolojik statüye yerleşerek kültürel kurumsallaşmaların sorgulanmaksızın sürekliliğini sağlamak ve topluluk yoluyla ahlaki kontrolü gerçekleştirmek. Bu üç özellikle dinin din olmayandan ayrılarak tanımlanması sağlanmakta ve bu tanımlama ışığında araştırmanın sonuç bölümünde güncel din sosyolojisi çalışmalarına bir dizi öneride bulunulmaktadır.

The purpose of this research is to analyze the dynamic processes of collective identity by examining the relationship between New Orleans and its professional football team, the Saints, after Hurricane Katrina. Much of the discourse written on American professional sports focuses on economic transactions between player and franchise or franchise and city. This study explores sports from a cultural perspective to understand the perceived social values provided to the host community. This case study spans the years from 2006 to 2013 and discusses several major events, including the Hurricane Katrina disaster, the reopening of the Superdome, the Saints winning a league championship and subsequent cheating scandal, and the city's hosting of Super Bowl XLVII. Using a mixed-method approach of content analysis, in-person interviews, and participant observation, this research demonstrates how post-Hurricane Katrina events altered the collective identity in New Orleans. Additionally, it explores how the interaction of sports, identity, and ritual served to create a civic religion in New Orleans. Finally, the research examines the impact of this religious devotion on New Orleans' tourist economy.

Représentation et participation politiques sont au coeur de la vie démocratique. Si l'on trouve trace de ces deux notions à l'aube de XVIII e siècle et plus généralement aux XIX e et XX e siècles que la représentation et la participation politiques, avec l'instauration progressive et la consolidation de la démocratie libérale, prennent le sens que nous leur connaissons aujourd'hui. Néanmoins, au cours de ces quelque 200 ans d'histoire, la vie démocratique moderne a connu une grande évolution et un renouvellement des pratiques et des concepts. En ce début du XXI e siècle, le monde occidental fait face, selon certains observateurs, à une double crise politique : crise de la représentation, d'une part, crise de la participation, d'autre part. Si, en tant que chercheurs en sciences sociales, le vocable de « crise » ne nous satisfait guère puisqu'il est intrinsèquement porteur d'une connotation négative -et donc d'un jugement normatif -, on ne peut toutefois pas éviter ce double questionnement

HUMAN RIGHTS – CIVIC RELIGION OF THE WEST: PERSPECTIVE OF THE EUROPEAN NEW RIGHT

The topic of the article are human rights in the perspective of the European New Right (ENR). Alain de Benoist (main ideologist of the movement) thinks that human rights became the civic religion of the West that replaced Christianity in the public sphere, becoming the main ideological reference point of the West. The article outlines the Christian genesis of human rights and the critique of human rights, from the standpoint of ENR ideology. Alain de Benoist argues that human rights are in fact an ideological weapon of the West whose aim is to dominate non-Western countries through symbolic power.

[PL] Tematem artykułu są prawa człowieka w perspektywie Europejskiej Nowej Prawicy (ENP). Alain de Benoist (główny ideolog) uważa, że prawa człowieka stały się religią obywatelską Zachodu, która zastąpiła chrześcijaństwo w zlaicyzowanej przestrzeni publicznej, stając się głównym, ideologicznych punktem odniesienia Zachodu. Artykuł omawia chrześcijańską genezę praw człowieka i krytykę praw człowieka z punktu widzenia ENP. A. de Benoist argumentuje, iż prawa człowieka są de facto bronią ideologiczną Zachodu, służącą do symbolicznego zdominowania niezachodnich państw.

This article explores the civic-liturgical context of three sermons by the friar Preacher Giordano da Pisa, delivered during a same week of 1304 in Florence (two on Sunday and one on Thursday), all of them from the verse of Matthew 9, 1 (Venit in civitatem suam). Based on considerations regarding the choice of the biblical verse, as well as the exami- nation of other documents of the Do- minican Order and two liturgical books of the Florentine cathedral, I argue that the friar deliberately chose not to follow the liturgical customs of sermon com- position in these preachings. Thus, it is concluded that this procedure was made to establish a reflection on the city (the quintessential human environment, both on Earth and in Heaven) in view of the civic-religious feast of Saint Repara- ta, Florence’s patroness saint, which took place on Thursday.

Quand vient l’été 1544 à Besançon, saison favorable aux épisodes de peste les plus sévères, voilà déjà plusieurs années que la maladie y règne, sans que les mesures prises par les gouverneurs n’y fassent rien. Ils décident alors de vouer la cité au Saint-Suaire de Besançon, empreinte du corps du Christ dans un linge, révéré dans la cathédrale Saint-Étienne. Pour matérialiser ce contrat votif, ils fondent une confrérie du Saint-Suaire et commandent une image ; un tableau en cire figurant le plan de la cité, déposé devant la relique avec laquelle s’amorce le dialogue votif. La cire, traditionnellement utilisée par les fidèles souffrant pour se vouer aux reliques, attribue à la ville une corporéité ; c’est le portrait efficace du corps social de la cité, mais aussi son corps topographique, que dressent les gouverneurs pour traiter la contagion. Cet article s’intéresse à cet acte d’image, engageant la communauté dans un tableau de cire, ainsi qu’aux effets politiques d’une telle représentation, par laquelle la ville apparaît à elle-même comme un corps solidaire.

When summer 1544 comes in Besançon, propitious season to the plague, the disease is spreading for several years and the gouvernors’ rulings are without effect. They decide to devote the city to the Holy Shroud of Besançon, a cloth with the Christ’s body printed on it, revered in St. Stephen’s Cathedral. So as to materialize this votive contract, they found a confraternity of the Holy Shroud and order an image: a wax picture representing the Besançon’s map, deposit it in front of the relic, with which the votive dialogue begins. Wax, traditionally used by unwell faithful to devote themselves to holy bodies, imputes a corporality to the city: it is an efficient portrait of the social body, but also of the topographic body, erected by the gouvernors against the infection. This paper aims to study this image’s act, engaging the community in a wax picture, and the politic effects of this representation, by which the city appears to herself as an aggregated body.
