P ARMI LES CONCEPTS FONDATEURS de la sociologie rurale, en France mais aussi dans beaucoup d'autres pays, figurent en bonne place ceux de « paysan », de « paysannerie » et de « sociétés paysannes ». Toutefois ces concepts n'appartiennent pas en propre à la sociologie rurale car, à côté d'elle, on peut identifier plusieurs courants -en sociologie, en anthropologie et en histoire -qui en ont fait leur objet central d'analyse, courants que l'on peut qualifier d'« études paysannes » ou de « peasant studies » (en témoigne par exemple The Journal of Peasant Studies). Et, comme on va le voir avec Robert Redfield, il n'y a pas de superposition stricte entre ces courants et ceux de la sociologie rurale, même si, d'évidence, des passerelles existent entre eux. Schématiquement, la sociologie rurale s'attache prioritairement à décrire les spécificités des sociétés rurales et considère la paysannerie comme une catégorie historique destinée à disparaître avec la modernité. Everett C. Hughes, de 1927 à 1938, a mené une étude sociologique pionnière de la société québécoise « en transition » par des recherches empiriques. Son analyse sociologique « à la Chicago » implique une réflexion sur les relations ethniques entre deux groupes (tensions et interrelation) et, plus spécifiquement, sur la frontière ethnique où se rencontrent ces groupes. Cet article vise à décrire la « socialisation adulte » (adult socialization) du sociologue de terrain, qui entraîne la transformation du « soi » (self), quand ce dernier découvre une communauté « autre » que celle où il a vécu sa socialisation primaire et s'en imprègne, à la source d'un enrichissement mutuel de longue durée entre Hughes et le Québec.

Cet article se propose de décrire les conditions d'enquête de terrain d'Everett Hughes et Helen Hughes MacGill à Drummondville pour la préparation de l'ouvrage French Canada in Transition (1943). Celles-ci ont peu été décrites ou commentées alors que la description des conditions d'enquête, notamment de la durée précise de celle-ci, serait aujourd'hui considérée comme fondamentale pour garantir la validité d'une telle enquête. L'ouvrage précité a fait l'objet, de la part d'Everett Hughes, d'une « histoire naturelle » (natural history) de sa recherche de longue durée sur le Canada français, mais il ne s'agissait pas d'une histoire du travail de terrain qui a conduit à l'ouvrage. Ce terrain est décrit ici à partir d'archives inédites éclairant en particulier l'entrée sur le terrain (getting in), les « ficelles » du terrain permettant la prise de contact avec les informateurs privilégiés, la définition de rôles précis pour les observateurs permettant aux habitants d'une communauté de « définir la situation » à leur égard, et le « marché » passé avec certains informateurs du monde industriel local en échange de la confidentialité sur le nom de la ville. « L'oeil » sociologique acéré du couple Hughes est également étudié dans la routine des observations et l'observation des routines locales. Thomas and Znaniecki's The Polish Peasant in Europe and America emphasises the importance of people representing their own lives, in written autobiographical life histories and more particularly in letter-writing and correspondences. Some of the canonical and disciplining processes that led to this book 'disappearing' from the key texts of sociology are outlined. However, the emphasis is on Thomas and Znaniecki's conceptualisation of the self around ideas about 'social becoming' as revealed by the relational and sequential nature of writing, over time, in letters and correspondences. Life writing, and in particular epistolarity, is central to their project, because the new ways in which people represent themselves and their lives in circumstances of social change and mass migration provide an index to the times and so make available in representational form what 'self' is and becomes under such conditions. Thomas and Znaniecki's notion of self is not inner-reflecting, but rather a sociallyembedded, relational, situational and temporally-located self which reflects on the outer world of happenings and situations so as to re-engage with these. For them, it is less that people 'construct a self', in the sense of self-making, and more that a self is constructed and eventuates in situational, relational and responsive ways, with the representational forms of life writing providing the key to analysing this. Dans ce chapitre, nous pointons d'abord les discontinuités évidentes entre les catégories spatiales des sociologues de Chicago des années 1920-1930, et celles d'Erving Goffman, parfois présenté comme le principal représentant, avec Becker et Strauss, d'une « seconde école de Chicago » des années 1950-1960. On peut reconstituer au fil de l'oeuvre de Goffman une petite théorie de l'espace de l'interaction, saisi tantôt :-sous l'aspect de sa différenciation en régions ;-pour sa clôture en tant que cellule séparée de son environnement par une « membrane » ;-en tant que cadre ou dispositif cognitivo-pratique accueillant et sous-tendant l'interaction ;-enfin comme sphère personnelle d'action, de perception et d'attention. Or ces notions spatiales doivent finalement peu aux travaux de Park, Burgess ou McKenzie. Quatre autres inspirations directes sont alors présentées, par ordre d'apparition dans l'oeuvre de Goffman : la psycho-sociologie fonctionnaliste des systèmes d'interaction de George Homans et Robert F. Bales, l'anthropologie cognitive de Gregory Bateson, la psychologie écologique de Roger Barker et Robert Sommer, et la biosémiotique de Jakob von Uexküll. À l'examen de ces références hétéroclites, on découvre une combinaison d'inspirations topologiques et écologiques. Urban anthropology is a discipline that emerged only with great difficulty. Its origin in the Chicago school of sociology made the discipline dependent upon urban sociology. The ethnographic focus of the Chicago school was short-lived, overtaken by a statistical, quantitative sociology that came to long dominate the field. For their part, anthropologists were late in dealing with cities, arriving only in the 1960s. Since then, they have vacillated between doing anthropology in the city and doing urban anthropology. Given this problem, the urban philosopher Henri Lefebvre may provide us with some fresh insights. In this article, I propose an anthropological rereading of some Lefebvrian concepts, such as “lived space” and “everyday life,” emphasizing their socially transformative character. I offer a series of epistemological reflections relevant to our discipline and, by drawing on examples from my ethnographic research, seek to contribute to the methodological formulation of a critical perspective on urban ethnography.

Introduction to The Chicago Pragmatists and American Progressivism (Cornell University Press, 1993), a contextual study of the emergence of Chicago or Deweyan pragmatism from the intellectual and social conflicts of late 19th- and early 20th-century America.

The paper presents two distinct theoretical imaginations of relationships between man and society from the perspective of space, rooted in the western and Chinese sociological thoughts. The connection between space and personality in Simmel’s writings constitutes one of the most important foundations in Western sociological thoughts. The concept of “marginal man”, crafted by Chicago School sociologists and built on Simmel’s theoretical insights, becomes the prototype of the modern personality in western context. Equally importantly, the “marginal man” also becomes the image of an ideal modern man projected by early Chinese sociologists trained and influenced by western sociological thoughts. One prominent sociologist in Republican period, Ching chao Wu understands migration in China as a journey of marginal man, and envisions a personality freed from rural village life and enriched by diversified cultures in urban society. Wu further prescribes nationalism as a cure to the inner turmoil of the marginal man caused by conflicts between cultures, a typical challenge in American urban life. The writings of another prominent sociologist, Quentin Pan, presents a different understanding of special relationship between man and society. He identifies the unit of migration as the “bloodline” instead of an individual. By migrating, “the migrant ancestor” avoids adverse selection caused by extreme familism and rigid class structure, consequently cultivates a wholesome bloodline, which produces descendants with a keen sense of empathy and social justice, as carriers of the Confucian ideal personality who changed the local mores for the better. The migrant ancestor’s withdrawal from society presents a striking contrast to the marginal man’s invasion into space. The paper concludes that “the migrant ancestor” constitutes another prototype of personality parallel to “the marginal man” in understanding social processes including but not limited to urbanization, and deeply rooted in Chinese sociological thoughts.

Focusing on the concept of social space in the writings of three sociologists, Georg Simmel, Robert E. Park, and Erving Goffman, this article examines the classic theoretical formulations of social spaces in the tradition of the Chicago School of Sociology. For Simmel and the Chicago School, the foundation of social spaces lies in the social interactions among actors, and social entities and structures emerge from these interaction processes. This theoretical tradition emphasizes the interdependence of physical space and social space, highlighting two featured assumptions about social space: endogeneity and temporality. It also focuses on the relationship between spaces and human emotions.

One of the biggest complaints from university students in the humanities is that instructors are too "one sided." Urban research has long recognized that neighbourhoods are dynamic and relational. However, lack of data, methodologies, and computer processing power have hampered a formal quantitative examination of neighbourhood relational dynamics. To make progress on this issue, this study proposes a graph neural network (GNN) approach that permits combining and evaluating multiple sources of information about internal characteristics of neighbourhoods, their past characteristics, and flows of groups among them, potentially providing greater expressive power in predictive models. By exploring a public large-scale dataset from Yelp, we show the potential of our approach for considering structural connectedness in predicting neighbourhood attributes, specifically to predict local culture. Results are promising from a substantive and methodologically point of view. Substantively, we find that either local area information (e.g. area demographics) or group profiles (tastes of Yelp reviewers) give the best results in predicting local culture, and they are nearly equivalent in all studied cases. Methodologically, exploring group profiles could be a helpful alternative where finding local information for specific areas is challenging, since they can be extracted automatically from many forms of online data. Thus, our approach could empower researchers and policy-makers to use a range of data sources when other local area information is lacking.

This article rescues the social thought of Jane Addams; introduces the social center who led, Hull House, and its contributions to the labor movement; and recovers the forgotten history of the Chicago Women's School through their publications in the American Journal of Sociology on different areas of the sociology of work. From the intersection of gender and knowledge policies in social sciences, we argue that male/stream history has not only lost the previous contributions, but also a particular epistemological proposal: an epistemology of neighborhood from the everyday, relational and cooperative, from a radical pragmatism that merges research, reform, activism and social theory.

Reunis autour d’une meme methode - l’ethnographie reflexive - et autour d’une problematique construite sur la prise en charge familiale, medico-sociale et sanitaire des personnes decrites comme relevant du soin psychiatrique, dix ethnographes et un photographe ont mis en place une demarche conjointe originale aux accents artistiques et scientifiques. Apres avoir restitue les conditions de possibilite d’une telle cooperation, l’article insiste sur les benefices que l’equipe en a retires, depuis la construction des objets - scientifiques et artistiques - jusqu’a la diffusion « mixte » des resultats, en passant par la necessaire objectivation des methodes d’enquete. Il retrace la facon dont, entre 2011 et 2015, une telle alliance a pu se nouer et ce qu’elle a produit d’une part, sur l’apprehension d’un objet commun - les consequences quotidiennes des troubles psychiques invalidants - et d’autre part, sur la reflexivite d’enqueteurs aux outils et pratiques apparemment eloignes.

Les effectifs de la Police nationale française rencontrent fréquemment des situations inattendues qui imposent des prises de décisions rapides (Godé et Vazquez, 2017). Les environnements big data sont susceptibles d'affecter le processus de prise de décision des policiers. La question que nous posons ici est la suivante : Comment les experts de la sécurité publique prennent-ils des décisions en environnement big data ?. Cette recherche s'intéresse à un évènement en particulier : l'étape de contre-la-montre du Tour de France 2017. La ville de Marseille a accueilli le 21 juillet 2017 les coureurs du Tour de France pour une étape de contrela-montre : jusqu'à 300 000 personnes étaient attendues pour l'évènement. Afin de coordonner les patrouilles de police et les différentes compagnies de C.R.S. sur le terrain, les équipes du Centre d'Information et de Commandement (C.I.C.) de la Police de Marseille ont pu s'appuyer sur de nombreuses technologies qui constituaient leur environnement big data. Cet environnement big data permet aux décideurs de repérer des situations en contexte changeant, de réévaluer des situations non familières et d'envisager des solutions de retrait pour sécuriser les actions des équipes sur le terrain.

Epidemiology of mental disorders emerged in the post-1945 era at the intersections of different areas of knowledge. Given its ambitions, the Stirling County Study provides an instructive case study. It is also a good example of how the epidemiology applied methodological skills from social sciences. This paper aims, first, to reconstruct one of the first episodes in the development of psychiatric epidemiology. Its second purpose is to provide a detailed description of interdisciplinarity at work, and to examine its effects. After explaining some of the major features of the Stirling County Study, I emphasize the links between some of the first results, particularly regarding young people as a population at risk, and the job market after the Great Depression.

This report examines the Chicago Area Project (CAP), the first community-based delinquency prevention program, from both a historical and a contemporary perspective. The analysis is in three parts. The first part describes CAP's founding in the 1330s and analyzes the process through which it was established and t'le operation of its prevention programs. The second part examines the operation of the CAP program in South Chicago in 1980, in light of assumptions derived from the historical analysis of the salient features of CAI, philosophy and practice. Both parts focus on the ways CAP was implemented and the implications these ways may have had for its success, or lack of success, in preventing delinquency. The third part of the analysis combines census data with data on delinquency rates and data on program participation and operations to develop a rudimentary quantitative method to enlarge upon and with which to make a preliminary validation of earlier analyses. Just to view de homeland England, in de streets of London walk, An' to see de famous sights dem 'bouten which dere's so much talk, An' to watch de fact'ry chimneys pourin' smoke up to de sky, An' to see de matches-children, dat I hear 'bout, passin' by. 1 These stanzas from McKay's poem-'Old England'-express the conventional, British Caribbean and colonial view of the mother country. It was published in 1912. His opinions, however, were to change radically, especially after he visited the metropolis seven years later. He ended his days hating England and the civilisation it represented. Unlike the other Caribbean intellectuals represented in this volume (barring only Padmore) McKay's journey to England was indirect: he journeyed not from the Caribbean, but from New York after an absence of more than seven years from his native Jamaica. For most of the time in the US he was part of America's black proletariat, earning his living, as his friend Max Eastman put it, 'in every one of the ways that northern Negroes do, from "pot-wrestling" in a boarding-house kitchen to dining-car service on the New York and Philadelphia Express'. McKay regarded himself as 'not only a Negro but also a worker', and we might add for greater precision, a manual worker, one of Afro-America's menials. 2

This article addresses the sociological approach and political engagements of the early twentieth century sociologist, Herbert Adolphus Miller (1875-1951). He is now largely forgotten, but he had deep connections within the Chicago milieu of pragmatist sociology and social reform activities through both the Settlement movement and the Survey movement. In 1914 he wrote a volume in the Cleveland Survey on Immigrant children in the school system and in 1918 was appointed to head the division on Immigrant Contributions in the Carnegie Corporation's project on 'Methods of Americanization', in which Robert E. Park was head of the division on Immigrant Press and Theater (Park in The Immigrant Press, 1922). If Miller's name is recognized at all it is as author with Park of Old World Traits Transplanted (1921), a work subsequently attributed to W. I. Thomas. We examine the nature of Miller's research on immigrant populations from subject nationalities in Europe, undertaken in Cleveland and as part of the Carnegie project. He left the latter project midway through to become part of a small group that drafted the Czechoslovakian Declaration of Independence in November 1918. We show how Miller developed a distinctive approach to 'Americanization' through his idea of 'proportional patriotism' that challenged the dominant discourse of assimilation that became entrenched in the years after the end of the first world war and which was largely accepted by Park and by Thomas. He was dismissed in 1932 from Ohio State University because of his views on race mixing and his criticisms of the British and Japanese empires. Enduring Themes of Qualitative Family Research Contemporary qualitative family research has a rich intellectual heritage that provides researchers with ideas and language that guide them in the procedures of their work and helps them to explain to themselves and to others the traditions on which their work is based. The characteristics of qualitative research that I discuss in this article are understanding experiences in context, immersion, interpretations grounded in accounts that individuals provide of their experiences, and research as action oriented. These characteristics have a strong philosophical base that extends from 19th century German philosophy to American pragmatism and interactionism to contemporary research. This article examines this heritage and shows that today's qualitative family researchers stand on the shoulders of giants. Qualitative family researchers build on a rich intellectual tradition. Although many of today's qualitative family researchers feel isolated in the midst of other scholars who do not share their perspectives, qualitative family researchers actually have a heritage that not only affirms our identities as researchers but also provides us with ideas and language that guide us in the procedures of our work and help us explain to ourselves and to others what we do, why we do it, and why what we do is important (

Az Egyesült Államokban és az Európai Unióban megfigyelhető városi hanyatlás szerkezetével, dinamikájával és tapasztalatával foglalkozó összehasonlító szociológia a marginalitás új rezsimjének kibontakozását jelzi. Ez az új rezsim a szegénység olyan formáit termeli ki, amelyek nem pusztán egyéb folyamatok következményei, nem ciklikusak vagy átmeneti jellegűek, hanem kódolva vannak társadalmunk jövőjébe, amennyiben e formákat épp a rendszer belső jellemzői tartják fenn: a bérmunkaviszony folyamatos repedezése, a kisemmizett városrészek funkcionális elszakadása a nemzeti, illetve globális gazdaságoktól, valamint a jóléti államnak a polarizálódó városokban lezajló átrendeződése. Jelen tanulmány a „fejlett marginalitás” három kifejezetten térbeli jellegzetességét mutatja be az amerikai fekete gettó és a francia munkás banlieue századfordulós összehasonlító elemzése alapján. E három sajátosság – a lakóhelyi röghöz kötöttség és megbélyegzés, a térbeli elidegenedés és a „hely” eltűnése, valamint a hátország elvesztése – megvilágítása mellett a tanulmány bemutatja, hogy ezek a jellegzetességek a posztindusztriális társadalmakban milyen hatással vannak a prekariátus kialakulására.
