Одно из центральных мест в предлагаемом сборнике отводится фигуре Генриха фон Фика (1678-1750) и его деятельности по сбору документов в Швеции. В аспекте истории идей петровские преобразования сопоставляются с учением и практикой хорошо управляемого государства раннего Нового временикамеральными и полицейскими науками северной Европы. Сборник адресован историкам, юристам, экономистам, а также всем, кто интересуется историей петровских преобразований.

Passionate in politics, history, literature and the arts, Catherine the Great ruled Russia with an iron fist. When taking into account the depth of her reign, historians must be able to examine the many factors
that come into play with her role as a ruler; the socio-political atmosphere of her time, the conditions in which she inherited Russia, etc. Despite Catherine’s numerous achievements during her reign, much of the knowledge surrounding her as a ruler points towards her personal affairs and private matters of her sexual health. It is this hyper-fixation of Catherine’s sexuality that taints the gravity of her position and undermines her long-term contributions to Russia both throughout history and the present day. The
treatment of Catherine the Great is a recurring pattern throughout history of the portrayal of great female rulers.

At the end of the 18th — the beginning of the 19th centuries, the statue and the sculptural group by F.I. Shubin and P. Triscornia depicting Catherine the Great added an important semantic and ideological accent to the decor of the Ostankino Theatre-Palace, the residence of Count N.P. Sheremetev near Moscow. Created during the lifetime of the Empress, those statues expressed one of the characteristic features of the era, which was the glorification of the head of state. The history of the existence of the statue and the sculptural group is remarkable and is associated with changes and relocation: between estates and houses at the will of the Sheremetev counts, as well as due to the tragic events of Russian history. Made by outstanding sculptors, Russian and Italian, they were carefully preserved by their owners. In this article, the statue and the sculptural group depicting Catherine the Great are for the first time considered together. The author’s long-term study of the Sheremetev sculpture collection, including inventory materials and archival documents, made it possible to highlight issues related to the artistic features, attribution and provenance of the sculptures under consideration. / В конце XVIII — начале XIX века статуя и скульптурная группа с изображением Екатерины II авторства Ф.И. Шубина и П. Трискорни вносили важный смысловой идейный акцент в обстановку Останкинского театра-дворца, подмосковной увеселительной резиденции графа Н.П. Шереметева. Относясь к числу прижизненных изваяний императрицы, они выражали одну из характерных черт эпохи, заключавшуюся в прославлении главы государства. История бытования статуи и скульптурной группы примечательна и связана со многими перемещениями: между имениями и домами по воле графов Шереметевых, а также вследствие трагических событий российской истории. Выполненные выдающимися русским и итальянским скульпторами, они были бережно хранимы своими владельцами. В рамках данной статьи статуя и скульптурная группа с изображением Екатерины Великой впервые рассмотрены вместе. Многолетнее изучение автором собрания скульптуры Шереметевых, в том числе материалов описей и архивных документов, позволило осветить вопросы, связанные с художественными особенностями, атрибуцией и провенансом указанных скульптур.

The article examines the visual feminine personifications of Russia in the 18th century and their symbolic meaning, which is revealed in the analysis of the correlation of the figures of Russia and Russian empresses in the allegorical images of the post-Petrine era (in firework display scenes, medals, engravings, book and calendar frontispieces, illustrations, etc.). The characteristic features and attributes of the allegory of Russia, whose canons started in the 1730s, are important for interpreting the role of imperial power and the ruler’s personality in the post-Petrine culture. The personification of the state in the same visual sources manifested the ideas about the image of the Empire and Fatherland, significant for the Enlightenment. The author focuses her attention on the possible interpretations of the pair ‘Russia — Monarch’ and the motives for its implementation (the motive of Russia kneeling before the Empress, blessing her reign in front of the altar and glorifying her at the foot of the pyramid/obelisk). The distinctive features of the feminine allegory of Russia in the image of a ‘majestic wife’ with a complex of attributes are also shown. It is suggested that the symbolic relationship between the ruler / Empress and Russia embodied in visual texts should not be interpreted either as corresponding to the established metaphor of the Mother Empress (Catherine the Great), which became formulaic for the second half of the 18th century, or as the image of Mother Russia, characteristic of the 19th century. / В статье рассмотрены визуальные персонификации России XVIII века в феминной ипостаси и их символическое значение, которое выявляется из анализа соотношения фигур России и российских правительниц в аллегорических визуальных изображениях послепетровского времени (в «картинах» фейерверков, медалях, гравюрах, фронтисписах книг и календарей, иллюстрациях и др.). Характерные особенности и атрибуты аллегории России, каноны которой складывались начиная с 1730-х годов, важны для понимания трактовки роли императорской власти и личности императора в послепетровской культуре XVIII века, в то время как персонификации государства в тех же визуальных источниках манифестируют значимые для эпохи Просвещения представления об образе державы-империи и Отечества. В центре внимания — возможные интерпретации пары «Россия — монарх» и мотивы ее воплощения (мотив коленопреклонения России перед императрицей, благословения ее правления перед жертвенником и прославления ее у подножия пирамиды/ обелиска). Показаны также отличительные черты феминной аллегории России в образе «величественной жены» с комплексом атрибутов. Высказывается предположение о том, что смысл отношений правителя и России, воплотившийся в визуальных текстах, не следует трактовать ни как соответствующий сложившейся метафоре Матушки-императрицы, ставшей формульной для второй половины XVIII века, ни как образ России-матушки, характерный для XIX века.

Considering the issue of prestige-building in the analysis of Catherine IIʼs imperial policy towards the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 1760s and 1770s allows for a better understanding and description of this policy. An example of the influence of prestige politics on political action is the issue of political and religious equality of dissenters in Poland-Lithuania, pushed by Russia. Between 1764 and 1768, Russia's involvement in this issue was motivated by a combination of political factors (the intention to build a pro-Russian party in the Commonwealth composed of dissenters) and the prestige ones (the desire to create an image of Catherine II as a defender of dissenters). Aft er the collapse of the system of Russian domination (1768–1772), prestige considerations remained the only factor that pushed Russia to uphold equality enforced on the Commonwealth in 1768. Catherine IIʼs firmness hardened Russiaʼs policy by jeopardising an agreement with the Polish side, which consequently contributed to the decision on partition.

The article deals with a story first mentioned in historiography by Moisei Alperovich. On February 13 (2), 1787, the Polish Count Ignacy Potocki (1750–1809) at a dinner party in Kiev told a former colonel of the Spanish army, the Venezuelan Francisco de Miranda (1750–1816) that the best monument of Rome seemed to him the image of kings with their hands bound (Reyes ligados pr. las manos). This phrase reached Grigory Potemkin, King Stanislaus Augustus and his entourage and received a republican interpretation which fits well with the life story of the interlocutors: Ignacy Potocki would become a co-author of the Polish Constitution of May 3, 1791, in 1792 would serve as an acting War Minister, and during the Tadeusz Kosciuszko Uprising of 1794 would become the Minister of Foreign Affairs; from 1783 Francisco de Miranda was preparing a revolution in Spanish America, and in 1812 he would lead independent Venezuela. The article for the first time attributes
the “kings bound” as statues of defeated barbarian rulers (from 1720 in the Palazzo dei Conservatori). From the mid-sixteenth to the mid-nineteenth centuries these “kings bound” were exhibited on both sides of the female statue of Ceres remade as an image of victorious, triumphant Rome (Roma victrix, Roma triumphans) symbolizing the victory of the Eternal City. My hypothesis is that Ignacy Potocki implied a “double” meaning: both a political declaration of the radical Enlightenment and a hidden panegyric to Catherine II.

Ce mémoire explore les contraintes pesant sur le processus décisionnel du Conseil des Finances et les influences extérieures qui l'affectaient durant la première moitié du XVIIIe siècle. Pour comprendre la politique économique de ce Conseil, il est essentiel de ne pas se limiter aux décisions prises, mais de les replacer dans leur contexte administratif et humain. L'étude des sources issues de la pratique quotidienne révèle que le conseiller en charge des droits d’entrée était surchargé de travail et manquait de sources d’informations fiables et actualisées sur l’économie, l’industrie et la législation en vigueur. Incapable de traiter les requêtes de manière autonome, il dépendait largement des informations fournies par les particuliers et des avis des autres membres de l’administration, notamment les douaniers. Cette situation le rendait facilement influençable par les particuliers et les lobbyistes, qui pouvaient corrompre les membres de l’administration, un phénomène exacerbé par la crise économique qui retardait le paiement des gages des commis.

части эпистолярного наследия известного русского писателя последней трети XVIII в. М.Н. Муравьева. В данной работе в научный оборот введено 71 письмо поэта к отцу Н.А. Муравьеву и сестре Ф.Н. Муравьевой, которые были отправлены в 1776 г. и которые хранились в Отделе письменных источников Государственного исторического музея (Москва). Данные материалы позволяют реконструировать многие подробности биографии Муравьева. Так, например, по ним восстанавливается история его вступления в Вольное российской собрание, литературное и научное общество при Московском университете; выявлены связи начинающего поэта в академической среде, он был близко знаком с директором Академии наук С.Г. Домашневым, известными учеными В.Е. Адодуровым, А.А. Барсовым и др. Кроме того, данные письма позволяют описать отношения Муравьева с крупнейшими писателями эпохи — с В.И. Майковым, М.М. Херасковым и др. Помимо этого эти материалы помогают понять специфику службы Муравьева в Измайловском полку. Наконец, письма 1776 г. — важнейший источник наших знаний о круге чтения Муравьева и о его художественных замыслах

Sibirya, Asya'da kurulan ilk Türk devletlerinden itibaren Türklerin daimî ikametgâhları arasında yer almıştır. Bu nedenle Sibirya, Türk tarihi için eşsiz bir ehemmiyete sahiptir. Ancak Sibirya'ya ait kaynaklar genel itibariyle Rus menşelidir. En eski kaynaklar Sibir Kronikleri ve Rusların çertej ismini verdiği atlas/harita çalışmalarıdır. Bu çalışmaların öncü isimlerinden biri Semen Ulyanoviç Remezov'dur. Remezov oğulları İvan, Leonte ve Semen'le birlikte Tobolsk şehrinde Sibirya tarihi ve coğrafyası üzerine uzun yıllara yayılmış birçok önemli çalışma ortaya koymuştur. Ce prince du Saint Empire romain, né à Bruxelles, était à la fois écrivain, militaire, amateur de jardins et, par-dessus tout, l'une des figures les plus cosmopolites de la fin du XVIII ème siècle 2. Dans sa lettre, Ligne associe l'esprit de salon, typique du XVIII ème siècle, à une introspection sentimentale naissante accompagnée d'un état d'esprit mélancolique qui annonce la conception romantique et moderne de l'histoire en tant que perte. C'est précisément ce statut de la Lettre de Parthenizza en tant que témoignage littéraire du passage à la modernité, qui constituera le thème central de la lecture que nous en proposerons. Abstract: Willam James Stillman happened to be witness to the liberation movement uprisings against the Ottoman Empire in the period between 1866-1876. In the first case it was the uprising of Christian population on the island of Crete which tried to join independent Greek state in 1866. Stillman served as the United States Consul on Crete at the time. His country's foreign policy was not directed against Ottoman Empire so
Stillman was practically left to his own devices on the island. His pro-rebellion attitude cost him his diplomatic service and turned him into a permanent friend of the Greek community. Since that time, he wished for the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. When there was an unrest in Herzegovina in summer of 1875, he was on the scene as the correspondent of the London Times within a month. Due to the language barrier he was not familiar with political relations between the insurgents and the Montenegro, and he believed that the solution for the rebellious province was the change of masters, that is, for it to belong to Austria-Hungary. Cretan uprising in the book The Cretan Insurrection of 1866-7-8, New York 1874 and about the Herzegovina uprising in the book Herzegovina and the Late Uprising: The Causes of the Latter and the Remedies, London 1879. In this paper, Stillman's observations presented in the mentioned works are analyzed.

The author takes up the topic of the annexation of the starosty of Spisz (Zips) and three starosties of the foothills (Czorsztyn, Sącz and Nowy Targ) by the Habsburg monarchy in the years 1769–1772 in the light of Stanislaus Augustus correspondence with Luigi Canale, minister of the Kingdom of Sardinia‑Piedmont in Vienna. At the request of the Polish king, the Sardinian diplomat repeatedly entered into discussions on the subject with Austrian Chancellor Kaunitz and Empress Maria Theresa, and also delivered them official letters of protest from the Warsaw court. In the light of sources from the Turin archives and the findings of recent historiography, the author places the events surrounding Spisz and three starosties of the foothills in the broader context of the negotiations between Russia, Prussia and Austria on the eve of the First Partition. A re‑examination of Austrian usurpations reveals, as if through a lens, the enduring annexation tendency in the actions of the Viennese Burg towards the Polish Commonwealth.

Genesis and content of the declaration of the partitioning powers of September 18 and 26, 1772

In September 1772, diplomats of the neighbouring states (Russians and Prussians on the 18th, Austrians on the 26th) notified the Polish ministry of the partition and provided a declaration outlining the rationale behind it. The first draft was prepared in early March 1772 at Frederick II’s chancellery, and another by the head of Russian foreign policy, Nikita I. Panin. Ultimately, the text drafted by Austrian Chancellor Wenzel Anton Kaunitz was adopted as the common position of the three courts. Using unpublished materials from the Berlin and Vienna archives, the author reconstructs the process of conciliation of the partitioning powers’ positions on this issue.

The "afterimage" of Catherine II ("The Great") in modern cultural memory has come to include, among other things, a historical anecdote about the eighteenth-century, German-born, Russian empress' alleged fondness for sex with horses-a case of hippophilia so extreme that, according to one popular variant, it resulted in her accidental death during an act of bestiality. 1 The reasons for the accident may vary (from ordinary human error to major mechanical malfunction), but the punchline of the "horse story" is always the same: with each retelling, "[u]nder the guise of a 'joke,' the libertine woman celebrity" is "crushed to death again and again." 2 Demonstrating the "neatness and economy of a fable," 3 this sexist and highly sexualized piece of historical fiction has appeared in numerous books, plays, TV shows, and movies created since 1908. Julian Platt, wydając w 1959 roku tom korespondencji autora Historii narodu polskiego, wskazał znacznie więcej takich miejsc 1. Mimo licznych kwerend przeprowadzonych w bibliotekach i archiwach oraz pokaźnego, liczącego blisko pół tysiąca zespołu zgromadzonych listów, gdańskiemu badaczowi nieustannie towarzyszyła świadomość niekompletności przygotowanej edycji 2. Wydaje się, że jej przyczyną było przede wszystkim rozproszenie listów, zwykle w takich przypadkach stanowiące największe wyzwanie dla wydawcy. Julian Platt zmierzył się z nim, przygotowując doskonałą edycję, z której badacze i znawcy twórczości Adama Naruszewicza korzystają na co dzień w swojej pracy. Nie mylił się jednak, gdy podkreślając dążenie do oddania w ręce czytelników "najbardziej kompletnego zespołu korespondencji Adama Naruszewicza" 3 , dostrzegał zarazem konieczność kontynuacji poszukiwań. Zostały one podjęte blisko sześćdziesiąt lat po ukazaniu się Korespondencji Adama Naruszewicza i zaowocowały odnalezieniem siedmiu autografów niepublikowanych listów biskupa łuckiego. Korespondencja odkryta w Archiwum Głównym Akt Dawnych w Warszawie obejmuje sześć listów i znajduje się w dwóch różnych zespołach archiwalnych. Pierwszy z nich to Zbiór Muzeum Narodowego, w którym zachowały się pisma do Antoniego Brochockiego, Kazimierza Naruszewicza oraz Mierzejewskiego. W dru-Sztuka Edycji 2/2018 Magdalena Bober-Jankowska gim zespole archiwaliów, czyli Zbiorze Michała Marczaka, pomieszczono jeden list adresowany do Stanisława Augusta. Ostatni z odnalezionych rękopisów skrywały dotychczas mury Archiwum Zamku Królewskiego-Muzeum. W zbiorze korespondencji Michała Kleofasa Ogińskiego jest przechowywany jeden list biskupa do głównego adresata 4. Odnaleziona korespondencja pochodzi z lat 1792-1795. Dotyczy zatem okresu janowskiego, czyli najmniej rozpoznanego etapu życia autora Głosu umarłych. W listach do Kazimierza Naruszewicza czy Michała Kleofasa Ogińskiego podejmowany jest temat wyświadczania sobie wzajemnych przysług. W osobistym tonie został napisany list do króla. Nadawca użalał się w nim na przykre dla niego konsekwencje związane z prowadzonym rozwodem Kazimierza Nestora i Anny z Cetnerów Sapiehów. Jednak przynajmniej z dwóch powodów najbardziej interesujące w tej grupie wydają się listy dotyczące prywatnych, gospodarskich zatrudnień biskupa. Mają one charakter osobisty. Werbalizują się w nich rozmaite stany emocjonalne Naruszewicza, co nie jest częstym zjawiskiem w biskupiej korespondencji. Jednocześnie to właśnie wyzwolenie emocji sprawia, że opis wydarzeń, dotyczący zwykłych czynności gospodarskich, staje się niezwykle ekspresyjny, zaś narracja przedstawionej historii niecnych postępków komisarzy i ekonomów, przez stopniowe odsłanianie prawdy, potęgujące stan silnego wzburzenia, nabiera dynamiki jak w dobrej powieści kryminalnej. Ale listy Naruszewicza do Brochockiego i komisarza nie tylko pokazują prywatne, codzienne życie Adama Naruszewicza. Można dzięki nim dokonać sprostowań kilku nieścisłości, które wkradły się do Plattowego wydania korespondencji. Dają bowiem możliwość poprawnej rekonstrukcji pewnych wydarzeń... z beczką soli, zachudzoną krową i gorzałką w roli głównej. Początek tej historii to wrzesień 1792 roku. Dwa lata wcześniej, w czerwcu 1790 roku, Stanisław August mianował Naruszewicza biskupem łuckim, choć nominację ze Stolicy Apostolskiej otrzymał dopiero 29 listopada. Od tego momentu autor Historii narodu polskiego stał się gospodarzem niezwykle rozległej diecezji, która w XVIII wieku obejmowała województwo wołyńskie, brzesko-litewskie, podlaskie i bracławskie, czyli dzisiejszy Wołyń, zachodnie Polesie oraz południowe i środkowe Podlasie. Sprawne prowadzenie tak dużych dóbr wymagało gospodarskich umiejętności, doskonałej organizacji, ale przede wszystkim znalezienia zaufanych ludzi, którym można powierzyć zarządzanie biskupimi włościami. Ta ostatnia kwestia okazała się najtrudniejsza, bowiem w ciągu kilku lat Naruszewicz niejednokrotnie zwalniał pracowników, niewłaściwie-lub częściej nieuczciwie-wywiązujących się z powierzonych obowiązków. Jedną z trudniejszych pod tym względem sytuacji poznajemy dzięki opublikowanej już korespondencji. Jednak dopiero w świetle nowo odnalezionych listów można odkryć właściwy przebieg wydarzeń. Jej bohaterami byli nadawca listów, czyli Adam Naruszewicz, oraz adresaci: Antoni Brochocki, mąż Brygidy Mierzejewskiej, siostrzenicy biskupa, i komisarz łuckich dóbr, niejaki Mierzejewski. W 1790 roku Naruszewicz osiadł w biskupiej rezydencji w Janowie Podlaskim. Jednak rozmaite obowiązki wzywały go często do stolicy. W tych ważnych dla kraju chwilach między 1790 a 1792 rokiem był zazwyczaj przy królu. Dozór nad dobrami biskupimi powierzył Antoniemu Brochockiemu, do którego miał bezgraniczne zaufanie. The main methods and forms of updating the historical memory of the events of 1812-1814 in legislative acts, periodicals, brochures, and books are presented. The complex of historical sources on this issue includes manifestos, rescripts, appeals, and letters of Alexander I, citing which contemporaries demonstrated the similarities between the Patriotic War of 1812 and the Eastern (Crimean) War of 1853-1856; a set of issues of the newspaper Severnaya Pchela (Northern Post) (March 1854); and book editions The General Militia of Russia for the Faith, the Tsar, and the Fatherland and The 40th Anniversary of the Russians' Entry into Paris on March 19, 1814, directly devoted to the comparison of the events of 1812 and 1853-1856. As a result of a comparative contextual analysis of texts of different origins and genre and stylistic features, three content blocks were identified through which the historical memory of the Patriotic War of 1812 and the foreign campaigns of the Russian army was updated in the public space of the Russian Empire during the Crimean War. The first problem-thematic block is represented by texts the authors of which, using historical analogies, showed the contradictory nature of the alliance of England, France, and Turkey against Russia; the disparity between the figures of Napoleon Bonaparte and Napoleon III; and the "true" goals of the Allies' participation in the war. The content of the texts conditionally grouped into the second problem-thematic block clearly demonstrates the variety of genres and rhetorical techniques used to justify Russia's intentions and actions in the comparative retrospective of the two wars. The third problem-thematic block of texts has made it possible to identify the main ways of updating the memory of the conflict that had happened forty years before to show the reader the continuity of generations and the readiness of the entire society to sacrifice themselves to achieve common goals.

Federico Cristiano Torelli, born in Dresden in 1743, was the grandnephew of the baroque master Giuseppe Torelli and a major composer of the late Bolognese school whose career developed between Dresden, Bologna and Saint Petersburg. The present paper is the first attempt at a biography of this hitherto almost unknown composer, inspired by his highly original version of Metastasio's Passione, performed at Bologna in 1786 and 1787 with extraordinary success. The autograph score of La Passione, preserved at the Biblioteca Internazionale della Musica, was digitalized for this paper and proves the originality, expressivity and peculiar stylistic position of a composer between three nations.

In the spring of 1743, Samuel von Brukenthal began his educational journey in German academia. Halle was not his first destination, however, he traveled to Vienna, Pressburg (Bratislava) and Prague. He studied law, philosophy, political and administrative sciences at the universities of Vienna, Halle / Saale (political science, law) and Jena. During the period when von Brukenthal was in Vienna, the Papal Bull of April 28, 1738 condemning Freemasonry was read in the Catholic Churches by the Apostolic Nuncio, Cardinal Camillo Paulucci Merlini. 5 However, on March 2, 1743, when no was still 22 years old, Samuel von Brukenthal was initiated into the Freemasonic Lodge Aux Trois Canons (At the Three Cannons) in Vienna. Традиция почитания бурятскими буддистами российской императрицы Екатерины II как земного воплощения просветленной буддийской богини Белой Тары рассматривается исследователями как бесспорный исторический факт и не ставится ими под сомнение. Однако внимательный анализ бурятских письменных источников и российских исторических документов проблематизирует это утверждение. Цель исследования-на основе сопоставления и анализа документальных, нарративных и фольклорных источников на бурятском, русском и тибетском языках внести ясность в вопрос о реальных взаимоотношениях между бурятскими буддистами и Екатериной Великой. Результаты. В статье установлено, что утверждение о признании Екатериной II в 1767 г. титула Бандидо Хамбо-ламы восходит лишь к бурятоязычным письменным источникам и не находит подтверждений в российских исторических документах. Анализ русскоязычных источников, среди которых письма и сочинения самой Екатерины, позволяют сделать вывод, что отношение императрицы к подданным «ламаитам» диктовалось ее внешнеполитическими планами в Азии и характерным для европейского Просвещения пренебрежением к архаичным культурам «сибирских идолопоклонников», к которым, наряду с анимистами и шаманистами, ученые XVIII в. относили и буддистов. Анализ сохранившихся бурятских источников, среди которых исторические летописи и биографии, также не подтверждает мнение о существовании развитого культа почитания Екатерины II как воплощения богини Белой Тары. Такие свидетельства, тем не менее, сохранились в песенном фольклоре и религиозной поэзии бурят, но следует учитывать, что речь, по всей видимости, идет о поздних образцах, датирующихся концом XIX-началом XX в. Именно этот период характеризуется широким распространением идеи о святости дома Романовых в глазах буддистов, за которым могут стоять видные лидеры мнений российского истеблишмента, продвигавшие идею экспансии российских интересов вглубь буддийской Азии.

Публикуемое ниже письмо Антуана-Николя де Ле(с?)пина де Морамбера (Lespine de Morembert), французского актера, шпиона и литератора при русском дворе , адресованное актрисе М.-Ж.Б. Фавар в 1764 г., позволяет уточнить хронологию событий, связанных с приездом набранной Клервалем труппы в Петербург, а также сформулировать некоторые соображения касательно качества ее состава. Этот документ и восстановленный в преамбуле и комментариях к публикации контекст его появления позволяют сместить акценты в привычном описании механизмов русско-французских театральных связей, а именно: соотнести деятельность Клерваля по поиску актеров с ситуацией на театральном рынке Франции и Европы.

The relationship between ruler and consort, analysed in great depth in the rest of this book, became particularly complicated if the sovereign was a woman. In England this 'anomalous' case occurred for the first time in 1553 when Mary 1 ascended the throne. In order to prevent her husband Philip II of Spain from interfering with English politics, in 1554 Parliament issued the Act declaring that the Regal Power of this Realm is in the Queen i Majesty as fully and absolutely as ever it was in any of her most noble Progenitors, Kings of this Realm, thereby enabling Mary to 'use and enjoy the Crown and Sovereignty over her Dominions and Subjects' without the assistance of her male consort.1 The idea that the queen held the same powers as a king was more fully developed during the reign of Mary's successor Elizabeth I. Shortly after Elizabeth's coronation in 1559 the future Bishop of London John Aylmer published a treatise in which he defended the queen 'agaynst the late blown Blaste, conceminge the Government of Women'.2 His argument was based on the theory of the king's two bodies that had been current in England since the Middle Ages. According to this theory the person of the king consisted of a mortal 'body natural' and an immortal 'body politic'. During Elizabeth's reign the London lawyers referred to that view repeatedly, stating that 'the Body politic wipes away every Imperfection of the other Body, with which it is consolidated, and makes it to be another Degree than it should be if it were alone by itself'.3 In applying this theory to the queen, Aylmer suggested that the 'weakness' of the female 'body natural' was checked and outweighed by the inviolable power of Elizabeth's 'body politic'. The queen herself expressed a similar conviction: 'I am but one Bodye naturally Considered though by his permission [i.e. God's] a Bodye Politique to Goveme'.4 The queen's 'body politic' was construed as a strong, masculine body. Elizabeth I famously said that 'I know I have the body but of a weak and feeble woman, but I have the heart and stomach of a king'.5 Marriage posed a threat to the queen's autonomy as it brought the traditional hierarchy of the sexes into play. John Aylmer was at pains to stress that marriage concerned only the queen's 'body natural' and concluded: 'she is subiecte to man, in that she is his wife, not

В статье публикуется текст анонимного стихотворения из рукописного сборника середины XVIII в.; анализируются его жанровая природа и особенности языка. Сопоставление с публикациями описаний фейерверков последних лет правления Елизаветы Петровны позволяет сделать предположение о наиболее вероятной дате создания этого произведения и возможном круге лиц, с которыми был связан анонимный автор. Лексические особенности произведения позволяют предположить, что автор был связан с кругом И. И. Шувалова, П. И. Шувалова и М. В. Il presente studio intende analizzare l'influenza che la figura del filosofo francese Denis Diderot (1713-1784) ha avuto sulla Russia e sulla zarina Caterina II (1762-1796), con particolare attenzione alle implicazioni culturali e sociali nell'epoca dell'Illuminismo. Partendo da un'analisi generale del periodo preso in esame e facendo riferimento ai diversi intellettuali europei presenti in Russia all'epoca, il focus della ricerca si concentra sull'opera "Plan d'une Université pour le gouvernement de Russie" (1775-1776). Il volume, scritto dal filosofo di ritorno dal suo soggiorno in Russia, è volto a promuovere nuove proposte per una più efficiente organizzazione dell'università in Russia, in particolar modo a San Pietroburgo, dal momento che a partire dal regno di Pietro I il Grande (1682-1721), fondatore della città, il processo di civilizzazione legato all'educazione divenne di notevole importanza per i vari sovrani, in particolar modo sotto il regno della zarina Caterina II.

Brandenburg-Polish-Saxon Negotiations during Augustus II's Visit to Gdańsk in the Spring of 1698 Polish King Augustus II's stay in Gdańsk in 1698 provided an excellent opportunity to strengthen his existing friendly relations with Elector Frederick III. To this end, representatives of the Elector of Brandenburg, Gottfried Werner and Adam Bogislav Rubach, the former staying in Gdańsk temporarily and the latter residing there permanently, established a network with key members of the Saxon-Polish court. During the talks, a number of issues were addressed, not only those that arose in Brandenburg-Prussian-Polish, but also Brandenburg-Saxon relations. These included the Courland issue, the sale of Saxon estates, issues with postal organization, and above all, arranging the meeting of the two aforementioned rulers. Although the latter was not successfully concluded (something that Augustus II particularly cared about), intensified contacts between the monarchs resulted in a meeting in June 1698 in Pisz. In addition, the Elector's representatives took to Berlin information relating to matters of internal importance to August II at the time, such as the campaign against the Ottoman state and the conflict in Lithuania, as well as the course of action in the Sejmiks before the April Sejm. A detailed insight into the negotiations between the diplomats is possible thanks to a careful analysis of the correspondence between the deputies and Frede rick III, which is kept at the Geheimes Staatsarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin-Dahlem.

C. R. Mackintosh and the “Four” made the Glasgow style popular in Europe. Its imprescriptible part was an appeal to mysticism and symbolism. The use of enigmatic signs was not only distinguishing feature but also their individual language of communication with the world. The work’s structure suggests recourse to the system of ancient Egyptian knowledge of the East and Asia, as well as religious sacraments druids. It’s impossible to decipher the meaning of all the symbols
found in the Mackintosh. The inherent symbolism innuendo and ambiguity of interpretations makes it impossible to put an end to this process.

Szczegółowo omówiono czas, miejsce i sposób powstania tego źródła oraz zestawiono je z obejmującym ten sam okres fragmentem "Mémoirs" ostatniego króla. "Entretiens" stanowiły szkielet chronologiczny i faktografi czny, na którym król bazował, pisząc "Mémoirs", dlatego mogą być one wykorzystane do oceny wiarygodności królewskich pamiętników. Odkrycie nieznanego dotychczas czystopisu "Entretiens" wśród materiałów rewindykowanych z Rosji skłania do poszukiwań w archiwach rosyjskich kolejnych roczników "Entretiens", które król musiał mieć w Petersburgu, pracując nad kolejnymi tomami swoich wspomnień.

В работе рассмотрен слабо изученный период существования Персидской казачьей бригады от её создания до смерти Насреддин-шаха. На основе архивных материалов и опубликованных источников реконструированы процесс создания бригады, особенности её положения и развития при пяти командирах. Исправлено множество неточностей и ошибок, содержащихся в работах, посвящённых истории бригады. Скорректированы выводы предыдущих работ автора.

The article is dedicated to the question of filling secretary vacancies at provincial courts in the 1780-1790-ies. Eighteenth-century legislation had imposed high demands on candidates aspiring to such key positions. In spite of this in times of huge expansion in the civil service as during the implementation of the provincial reforms of Catherine II local administrators had to rely on less qualified clerks. The author shows by the example of the Perm vicegerency (1781-1797) the strategies of manpower recruitment chosen to staff secretary posts at district level courts. The article outlines, that nearly all secretary vacancies could be officially filled owing to such promotion methods as accelerated career advancement and frequent reshuffle. Due to the lack of staff cases of malpractice were rarely pursued, and most delinquents, continued exercising their functions without hindrance. The fact that C.F. Moderach, Pavel I's newly appointed representative in the Central Urals, decided in 1797 to cut a third of the staff in civil service can be regarded as a clear indication for the government's disapproval with the low professional standards in local state institutions. This, however, was not considered a strong enough reason to dismiss the mentioned above recruitment methods of and initiate fundamental changes.
