Borderland

The sustainability of rural areas is considered to be most threatened in peripheral, hardly accessible microregions with insufficient economical sources. The paper analyses one such rural area in the eastern part of Moravia from the viewpoint of individual economic, social, and environmental sustainability pillars. The area under study is the mountain territory on the border with Slovakia, which is under large-scale landscape protection. The area with very limited economic sources has been impacted with a change to the geopolitical situation after 1993 (from the centre of Czechoslovakia to the fringe of Czechia). W pierwszej części wskazano sposoby prezentowania wschodniego pogranicza Polski w dwudziestoleciu międzywojennym. Następnie przedstawiono, jak przestrzeń ta jest ukazywana we wskazanych powieściach. Obszary przygraniczne opisywane są jako inne, egzotyczne, gorzej rozwinięte, ale jednocześnie fascynujące i przyciągające. Główni bohaterowie wymienionych utworów to pisarze będący w stanie kryzysu. La traducción de la literatura chicana es un proceso complejo, pues los textos originales presentan una pluralidad textual y contextual difícil de trasladar. Esto comporta una relación especial entre el texto original, que es híbrido, y su traducción, lo cual nos obliga a adoptar un posicionamiento diferente en relación con el sujeto/objeto de la traducción, pues, al encararse al original, el lector se ve, en última instancia, implicado en un desplazamiento. El propósito de este artículo es analizar un caso concreto de "talking back" en las traducciones realizadas por Liliana Valenzuela de las obras de Sandra Cisneros. El objetivo, sin embargo, no es tanto el estudio en profundidad de los logros de Liliana Valenzuela como traductora, sino más bien analizar su discurso sobre la traducción y examinar cómo enfoca la traducción de las obras de Cisneros. Nuestro interés aquí está en ilustrar un aspecto del pensamiento contemporáneo sobre la traducción de la mano de las reflexiones de Liliana Valenzuela, mostrando cómo su enfoque sobre el tema evidencia una respuesta a los retos interculturales a los que nos enfrentamos en la actualidad. Abstract "'A mitad de camino entre aquí y allá, en medio de quién sabe dónde': Translating the/ from the Borderland" Translating Chicano literature is undoubtedly a complex procedure since the original texts are already loaded with a textual and contextual plurality that is difficult to transfer. This multiplicity involves a special relationship between the hybrid original text and the translation. It obliges us to adopt a different positioning with respect to the subject/object of the translation, because in approaching the original the reader is ultimately involved in a shifting experience. The aim of this paper is to analyse a specific instance of "talking back" in the translations by Liliana Valenzuela of Sandra Cisneros' books. The purpose, however, is not so much to study in depth the accomplishments of Liliana Valenzuela as a translator, but rather to analyse her discourse on translation and examine how she approaches the translation of Cisneros' works. Therefore, our interest lies in using Liliana Valenzuela' s reflections to illustrate one area of contemporary thought on translation, and show how her approach is a response to the intercultural challenges facing us today.

Strontium, oxygen, and carbon isotopes were measured in human tooth enamel from 66 burials in 9L-22 and 9L-23 residential groups at the Classic Maya site of Copan in western Honduras. These results are discussed in relation to earlier studies at Copan and baseline measurements from the surrounding region and the Maya area in general. Nearly 50% of the individuals are identified as non-local based on combinations of strontium, oxygen, and carbon isotope ratios. They came from a variety of places in the Maya area. This migratory pattern at the 9L-22 & 9L-23 residential complex from the Early to Late Classic (ca. 400-800 CE) is compared with 10J-45 sector from the mainly Early Classic occupation (ca. 400-650 CE) and an interesting change is noted. The social privileges observed among the Early Classic immigrants from the north Maya Lowlands were apparently revoked in the Late Classic. New immigrants, probably from the "non-Maya" regions of Western/Central Honduras, appear to have gained those social privileges. High-status Honduran individuals in the urban core suggests a strategy by the Copan dynasty in the Late Classic that incorporated the emerging "non-Maya" elites from Western/Central Honduras.

This article examines literary representations of Central Europe and its image in the works of Milan Kundera, Ingeborg Bachmann and others. At the same time the paper is devoted to the problems of territoriality, "feeling of border", specificity of Central European multicultural society, and processes of culture interaction. Central Europe is the space of different and special kind of tolerance. The case of Central European tolerance is a key to understanding spiritual and artistic life in the 20th century. When we try to find more special character of Central European spiritual life and narration, the feelings of nostalgia and innumerable flashbacks in time are more typical. The author offers to look at the Central European literary nostalgia as a possibility to situate Central European culture and spirituality geographically and territorially.

This article is an attempt to give an answer to the question: what are the consequences of the weakening factor of territorial belonging and how it in fact realizes in the Lithuanian-Polish-Belarusian borderland? In such a small territory as Lithuanian-Polish-Belarusian borderland it is possible to investigate two opposite, reciprocal processes: disappearances (the Lithuanian-Polish borderland) and strengthening of borders (the Lithuanian-Belarusian and Polish-Belarusian borderland). Borders as markers of division have different functions. Using a "boundary narrative" we will analyse such functions as "border-door", "borderwall", and "barrier". A method of a free narration about a life on border will allow to create the generalized image of the inhabitant of a border zone, its way of life and to reveal its peculiar features. These peculiar features we will analyse in the case of Lithuanian-Polish-Belarusian borderland.

The another history of balagulas from Berdicher The paper is an attempt to reread the history of Volyn balagulas. In Polish tradition these groups of young gentry decadents flirting with peasants culture are the symbol of lost generation. I would like to remind the forgotten discussion held by 19th century conservative writers who described balagulas movement as the threat to Polish identity.

Borderland identity and traditional community autonomy affect the practice of 'illegal' logging and the impact of regional autonomy among the Iban along the upper Kapuas borderland in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. We examine these issues with attention to the historical development of the Kalimantan Iban as a border people, their struggle to maintain control over their traditional forest resources under the fluctuating power of the Indonesian state and their approaches in dealing with regional and cross-border interests in the harvesting of their forests.

The author reviews the past and present examples of the diffusion of values in the Christian Churches, i.e., of the Eastern (Orthodox and Unite) and West (Roman Catholic and Protestant). They are portrayed through mutual conversion of temples, incorporation of traditional orthodox iconography in contemporary Roman Catholic churches as well as by adaptation of historic temples for their mutual ecumenical use. The values give testimony to the synthesis of art of both Christian Churches as well as to the return to their ecclesial unity. Apart from a retrospective look at contemporary, post-war buildings of this type the authors’ realizations are also introduced. These examples are representative for the architecture of cultural borderland which attempts to synthesize both the Western and Eastern Christian art. The contemporary scene of Polish social life is the field of occurring dynamic processes of change. In spite of the fact that the origins of a lot of them starts in the event of collapsing of the communist system it is just not enough to analise this reality by the prism of this occurrence but there is a lot of conditions, which indicate the need of engaging the more differentiated terms and conceptions, characteristic for the reality of societies of the perpetual, dynamic changes. Between different situations included in the changing processes important field belongs to the educational sphere. The paper deals with the literary representation of the expulsion of Germans from Czechoslovakia after World War II as it is portrayed in Jiří Kratochvil's novel Singing in the Middle of the Night, published in samizdat before 1989 and by Atlantis publishing house after 1989. On the one hand, the study views the novel in its broader context by considering discussions in the dissident and exile sphere which were triggered by the controversial theses formulated by Danubius (Ján Mlynárik) in 1978. On the other, it examines Kratochvil's specific literary language as it critically recalls the expulsion of Germans and its justification by the idea of collective guilt. Kratochvil both challenges the concept of collective identity, on which collective guilt is based, by using hybrid figures and questions the role of the German perpetrator by using the figure of the female victim (ethnos is "turned off" by female gender). The paper further argues that female authors commemorating the end of World War II and the expulsion of Germans four generations later (Radka Denemarková, Kateřina Tučková etc.) employ the same or very similar literary language, thus continuing Kratochvil's tradition. There is, however, a distinct difference between them and Kratochvil. Kratochvil's self-critical essayistic and literary commemoration of the expulsion was highly controversial for readers of the late 1980s and the early 1990s, whereas 20 years later, a text using the same language can become a mainstream collective text with widespread readership. The tradition of self-critical remembrance of the expulsion could, of course, be seen on a continuum, extending beyond official literature before 1989.

Argentina and Chile share the third world's longest international land boundary (5,150 km) delineated by the mountains of the southern section of The Andes. Complex relationships, migratory and commercial exchanges, as well as imaginaries/representations and policies concerning nature conservation and cultural heritage preservation have either divided or brought both countries together, throughout their history as Nation States and neighbors. Argentine and Chilean academics have studied regional borderlands as rather watertight compartments. This tendency to reproduce in the scientific research field the social construction of borders as a limit or division has been modified over the last two decades. Critical and binational studies, from multiple disciplinary perspectives and scales, have explored the transformation of this space shared throughout history. This article collects and systematizes background studies on the Araucanía (Chile) and North Patagonia (Argentina) frontier to identify the main theoretical contributions from Geography and other Social Sciences which have improved debates on space in this borderland. This descriptive research is based on a theoretical and thematic analysis of both recent academic production and activities. Some of the conclusions are: (1) Currently, studies focus on the subjective dimensions of borders. (2) The notion of region as a living space enables us to give center stage to the treatment of border subnational areas. (3) The notion of scale permits us to connect power relations to the dialectics nationalism/ internationalization, at interregional and intraregional level. (4) The concept of landscape unveils the importance of imaginaries/ representations in the processes of territorialization and frontierization.

The purpose of this research was to develop a model for estimating roundabout delay as a function of the influencing traffic and geometric factors. Nine roundabouts were selected from different areas in Khulna Metropolitan City (KMC). Circulating volume, entry volume, and entry delay were measured during peak and off-peak periods using video cameras. Data on geometric design elements including circulating width, entry width, and roundabout diameter were measured through field survey. An empirical approach was used to develop a delay model as a function of the influencing factors based on a time interval of 15 min. The analysis indicated that geometric variables have significant effects on the roundabout entry delay. Diameter of the roundabout island has the greatest influence, whereas the subject approach volume has the least influence. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie ram teoretycznych, użytych do przygotowania i realizacji badań w ramach dwóch edycji projektu Odświętne tworzenie i propagowanie marek (narodowej, lokalnej, regionalnej) w społecznościach lokalnych. Z perspektywy zamieszczonych w niniejszym tomie badań, obok kluczowych dla całości projektu zagadnień marki terytorialnej i społeczności lokalnych, najważniejsze kategorie teoretyczne to zróżnicowanie kulturowe, wielokulturowość i pogranicze. Przedstawione tu rozważania starają się przede wszystkim ukazać, w jakim zakresie wielokulturowość może być traktowana jako istotny kontekst tworzenia marek terytorialnych w społecznościach pogranicza. Ten cel nakazuje krytyczne spojrzenie na socjologiczne i społeczne użycia owej kategorii. Wielokulturowość kojarzona jest w Polsce dość powszechnie z relacjami społecznymi na pograniczach narodowych, ale niektórzy badacze wskazują, że jest to związek nieoczywisty [por. What has been applied in the characterization of the Polish national minority inhabiting the Polish-Czech borderland in Cieszyn Silesia and in the description and explanation of various signs of this minority’s activity are elements of Tadeusz Lewowicki’s theory of identity behaviours. They are introduced in the distinguished fields to specify some selected basic determinants: (a) historical (presenting history of the minority, its identification with the territory and social group, as well as its nationality structure); (b) socio-cultural (marking the separateness of culture, language, and religion in the borderland, as well as its school education and institutions or organizations supporting culture); (c) cultural-personal (constituting the images of “dissimilarity”, the group’s specific features, and the description of functioning stereotypes); and (d) industrial-economic (which describe living standards of minority and majority groups in the borderland, their civilization rank, ...

The article aims to identify the shortcomings of the statistics describing the size and structure of passenger car parc in Poland, and to formulate the consequences of these limitations for geographical research. Analysed in detail, the shortcomings are divided into three groups: (1) ‘dead souls’, i.e. an overestimation of the number of vehicles which have not been on the road for a long time but remain on the register; (2) ‘cars with a grid’ (cars registered as trucks in which the cargo part is separated from passenger seats by a metal grid), i.e. an underestimation of the number of passenger cars and overestimation of the number of trucks related to the mass phenomenon of registering passenger cars as large goods vehicles (LGV-approved cars); and (3) company cars, i.e. an overestimation of the number of vehicles in cities where leasing companies and large enterprises owning those cars have their headquarters. Searching for metaphors that allow us to understand the linguistic picture of Cieszyn Silesia and their residents, I refer to the anthology of conversations experienced by people with authority. The conversations influence the change and development of Cieszyn’s microcommunity and borderland (microworld). I analyse the language (common words, terms, names, and especially metaphors). The work includes three parts: the picture of space in metaphors, man in the space of Cieszyn Silesia (truths and myths) and names and brand names in the local microworld. I reach the conclusion that the metaphors describing the local community, one the one hand, grow it on tradition, culture and history and, on the other hand, express the current observations, for example about Cieszyn Silesia and its esotericism. The article explores the issues of the acculturation stress experienced by the children living in Gubin (in the Polish-German borderland), whose parents decided to educate and fulfill their children’s obligatory school duty in the German cultural environment in the neighbouring Guben. It has been assumed that Polish children’s systematic education (regularly living with their parents in their homeland) in German school: (a) contributes to their applying different acculturation strategies in various areas of life, (b) becomes the source of a constant and/or recurrent acculturation stress, which the child at early school age (with no support from the family and the environment of the admitting culture) is not prepared to manage both in the psycho-physical (individual) and social aspects

In the presented work, an attempt is made to specify the theory-cognitive significance of J. Reykowski's concept of multidimensional moral development for intercultural studies. This proposal seems to be particularly useful in pedagogical analyses dealing with moral reasoning of children. The presented research results and their interpretation confirm the presence of intercultural differentiation in the development of evaluation standards of learners in late childhood. Therefore, this concept may have broader application in intercultural studies in education.

Eastern Poland as the Borderland of the European Union The purpose of the present paper is to characterise the socio-economic potentials of the regions situated on both sides of the Polish-Russian, Polish-Belarusian and Polish-Ukrainian boundaries (against the background of historical conditions), as well as the economic interactions taking place within these regions. Jedna z najbardziej rozpoznawalnych reportażystek Polskiego Radia Białystok, Anna Bogdanowicz, twierdzi, że reportaż radiowy to "film dla niewidzących" 1. Definicja ta wyraźnie wskazuje na sposób, w jaki reportaż wywołuje wrażenia estetyczne czy emocjonalne-to dźwięk ma być podstawowym narzędziem wpływu na odbiorcę. Co więcej, taka definicja zdecydowanie rozdziela tożsame jeszcze niedawno role reportera i reportażysty. O ile współczesny reporter, zanurzony w ciągłym strumieniu wydarzeń, opisuje otaczającą go rzeczywistość według żelaznej reguły five-why 2 , stosując uogólnienia i uproszczenia, o tyle reportażysta tworzy swoiste "studium przypadku", wybierając na bohatera swego dzieła konkretne wydarzenie, osobę czy zjawisko (społeczne), a ostateczny efekt osiąga za pomocą zabiegów fonicznych. Poniższy artykuł jest próbą ujęcia reportażu radiowego w ramy definicyjne oraz ukazania jego szczególnego znaczenia wśród współczesnych gatunków medialnych. Fonosfera-wyjątkowy świat dźwiękowy Z racji swej długoletniej obecności w życiu społeczno-kulturalnym, radio, z upływem czasu, a zwłaszcza w ostatnich dziesięcioleciach, musiało stawiać czoła coraz to nowym wyzwaniom i tendencjom medialnym, wynikającym z szeroko pojętych przemian społeczno-gospodarczych, czy-ogólnie mówiąc-cywilizacyjnych. Dodatkowo, konkurencyjne wobec radia media: prasa, telewizja, Internet, operujące innymi technikami i środkami przekazu, wymuszają elastyczność działań i strategii radiowych.

Táto diplomová práca je venovaná štúdii vplyvov česko-nemeckej reliktnej hranice na religiozitu a sakrálnu krajinu územia mesta Manětín, reprezentujúceho kontinuálne české územie a obce Nečtiny s nemeckým historickým pôvodom. V teoretických východiskách tejto práce bol z toho dôvodu venovaný priestor vstupu do hraničnej problematiky s obecným predstavením jednotlivých typov podoby hraníc so zvýšeným dôrazom na predstavenie reliktnej a etnickej hranice pre potreby nadväzujúceho výskumu. RESUMEN:
En este ensayo explico la importancia histórica del libro Don Nadie y otros cuentos, de la escritora y periodista mexicana Lola Vidrio, publicado en 1952 y que en la actualidad es muy poco conocido. Mi argumento es que, para Vidrio, escribir tales relatos implicó realizar estudios, reflexiones y ponerse al tanto sobre discusiones literarias, filosóficas y políticas, aspectos que quedaron registrados en textos previos suyos, publicados en la prensa a lo largo de los años cuarenta, en particular en su columna “Prisma”. Por otra parte, haber logrado la publicación de su libro supuso importantes esfuerzos como madre trabajadora, especialmente por dificultades económicas y prejuicios de género.

ABSTRACT:
In this essay, I explain the historical importance of the book Don Nadie y otros cuentos by the mexican writer and journalist Lola Vidrio, published in 1952, which is currently not well known. I argue that, for Vidrio, writing that book involved carrying out research and reflections and getting up to date on literary, philosophical and political discussions. These influences are found printed in her previous texts, published in the press throughout the 1940s, particularly in her column "Prisma". On the other hand, having achieved the publication of her book required important efforts as a working mother, especially due to economic difficulties and gender prejudices.

Este capítulo analiza la función de la escritura epistolar en relación con la noción de
borderland, de Gloria Anzaldúa, en la novela La Genara de Rosina Conde. El
planteamiento es que la introspección que exige la escritura de la carta detona los
