« L'esprit humain a toujours été fasciné par les baleines. Le sujet n'a toutefois guère captivé les historiens canadiens, sans doute parce qu'au Canada la pêche à la baleine a presque toujours été pratiquée par des étrangers », Mario Lalancette en 1988.

Cet essai est un état de la question résumant cinquante années de travaux sur la question de la pêche à la baleine sur les territoires de la Nouvelle-France au 16ème et 17ème siècle. Nous verrons que les études dans ce domaine sont pratiquement inexistantes jusque dans les années 1970, contrairement aux recherches sur les pêcheries en Nouvelle-Angleterre, elles, très foisonnantes. Nous remarquerons également que les sources à exploiter seront tout autant archivistiques (et européennes) qu’archéologiques (et canadiennes), regroupant des efforts de part en part de l’Atlantique. Enfin, nous noterons que cette branche encore si peu étudiée bénéficierait certainement de plus d’attention, car trop de questions demeurent encore à ce jour.

The 18th century water-powered ironworks at Agoreggi, in the Basque country, was reconstructed based on contemporary historical records and archaeological investigations. In 1994-1999 three campaigns of experiments were carried out with the aim of reproducing the scale and technology of the iron production. This paper is a fully illustrated description of the experiments and, in particular, of the practical problems of the air delivery system and the use of the copper tobera (tuyere). In 1999 six agoas (blooms) were made of varying quality and size, the largest being a 30kg ferritic agoa smelted from 140kg of ore, but this is only about half the scale of the 18th century production.
It subsequently transpired that the mouth of the tobera used for the experiments should have been 170% larger, thus allowing more air to be blown into the furnace, and the making of agoas closer to the 18th century size. This study examines bead assemblages from Basque sites north of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and from Native burials south of the Gulf in French Acadia, with a view to determining which varieties may be
ascribed to these two cultural groups. It also examines sixteenth-century Saint Lawrence Valley bead assemblages in order to discover which types are found here, and to compare them with Basque,Acadian, and Great Lakes assemblages in order to learn whether European materials followed the valley in the sixteenth century.The explicit aims of this paper are 1) to extend and refine the sixteenth-century bead typology around the Gulf and in the Saint Lawrence lowlands, 2) to understand the respective roles of the Basques and the French in trade with Natives, and 3) to draw conclusions regarding possible trade routes to the lower Great Lakes during this period.

Who was Catalina de Erauso, the Lieutenant Nun? Swashbuckler, brawler, hard-headed businessperson, soldier, gallant, celebrity, transvestite, nun? How can one fail to be fascinated by her? A woman, yet a man; a soldier, yet a nun; Spanish, yet Basque. Catalina de Erauso embodied the contradictions and conflicts of the Early Modern Period, but she also transcended them in her own way. She became a stage on which we see how tensions between different identities played out in sixteenth-and seventeenth-century Spain, particularly the tensions between two sexual identities, male and female, and between the competing and multiple national "identities" already defined and being defined within that new thing that was "Spain." This book explores the different facets of Erauso's persona: her sexual identity and the factors that determined her choice of gender roles; and her Basque origin and its impact on her life and her self-image.

TheAldaietacemetery(6th–7thcenturyAD,BasqueCountry) provides an excellent opportunity for analysing the relationships between biology and culture. Culturally it presents material features whose origins lie in the Northern Pyrenean Frankish kingdom, while genetically it reveals greater affinity to the present-day populations of the northern Iberian Peninsula. This raises the question of the degree of influence exerted by the large European kingdoms that emerged after the fall of the Roman Empire over the populations located on the fringes of their expansion. An analysis of the genetic constitution, both patrilineal (Y-chromosome) and matrilineal (mitochondrial DNA), of the individuals buried in the cemetery,togetherwithdemographicandculturaldata,points to a stratified or hierarchical society in which certain lineages were linked to family groupsof highersocialand/oreconomic status. This higher status, which seems to have been transmitted through family members, may have been attained by individuals who were involved in military activities with the Frankish army. It may be suggested that the major European kingdoms of Late Antiquity had not only a cultural influence but also some influence on the biosocial behaviour of the populations located on their peripheries.

On the night of September 20,1615, the eve of the feast of St. Matthew, an expedition of Basque whalers lost their ships in a fjord near Trekyllisvik, Iceland, during a terrible storm. This led to a series of events that culminated in their October massacre at the hands of the islanders.The Basque mariners' bodies, dismembered, would not be buried. However, not all the Icelanders saw the massacre with good eyes. One of them, Jon Gudmundsson, better known as Jon laerdi (1574-1658) or "the wise man", wrote an essay on those events in defense of the victims titled "Sonn frasaga" (The true story). Four hundred years later, on April 20,2015, an international conference investigated various aspects of this tragic episode of the history of Iceland and the Basque Country. The academic meeting took place at the National Library of Iceland with the participation of experts from all over the world. The program, commemorating the fourth centenary of the massacre of Basque whalers in Iceland, was sponsored by the Govrenment of Gipuskoa and the Government of Iceland and organized by the Etxepare Institute, the Basque-Finnish Association, the Center for Basque Studies of the University of Nevada, Reno and the Barandiaran Chair of the University of California, Santa Barbara.

En este libro se analizan la historia y el contenido del Fondo documental denominado Gobierno de Euzkadi, custodiado hasta 2009 en el Archivo Histórico del Nacionalismo Vasco y trasladado en esa fecha a Irargi (Centro de Patrimonio Documental del Departamento de Cultura del Gobierno Vasco) y posteriormente al Archivo Histórico del Nacionalismo Vasco.
En el epígrafe relativo a su historia se analiza pormenorizadamente el devenir del fondo documental. En el segundo bloque se estudian los criterios utilizados para la organización del fondo, su tipología documental y el contenido del mismo. Se describen el tipo de documentación, la temática, el estado de conservación y el marco cronológico que abarcan los archivos correspondientes a cada departamento del Gobierno Vasco, desde su creación en 1936 hasta 1979.
Finalmente, se reflejan las conclusiones a las que nos ha llevado el proceso de análisis y estudio del Fondo Gobierno de Euzkadi.

Since the fall of the Franco's regime in Spain, the Spanish governments have been dealing with the low-intensity conflict in their country, namely the Euskadi Ta Askatusuna (ETA) attacks. This article analyzes the Basque conflict within the framework of the conflict analysis and resolution perspective. First, it highlights the conflict issues among the Basque conflict parties. Second, it clarifies the conflict issues by focusing on kidnapping and assassination done by the ETA during 1990s. The special case of Miguel Angel Blanco who was a local Basque councilman is a case study. In order to shed light on the Blanco case, it is necessary to focus the conflict resolution dynamics of the Basque conflict. Third, the paper aims to examine the Blanco case in terms of conflict issue identification, conflict issue clarification, and conflict cultural analysis perspectives. The issue identification perspective focuses on identity, face, and instrumental issues of the Basque conflict. The issue clarification perspective concentrates on two conflicting parties' perceptions and positions in the conflict. The cultural analysis perspective mainly attempts to analyze the cross-cultural differences between ETA and the Spanish government. Based on the analysis of Miguel Angel Blanco, this study concludes that it is necessary to reframe, re-identify and re-clarify the Basque conflict within the framework of conflict and peace studies.

This chapter discusses recent scholarship on Catalina de Erauso-'the Lieutenant Nun'-one of the more controversial figures of the early seventeenth century. Erauso fled from a convent at age fifteen; from then on, she dressed as a man and lived a life of travel, violence, and adventure. Her autobiography replicates the fluidity of her gender assignment, showing elements from different religious and secular writings. Both the person and the text are characterized by their defying of categorization. In Erauso, binary oppositions such as male/female, saint/sinner, Basque/ Spaniard seem to be subsumed. Erauso's Basque origin emerges as a key element for the understanding of her life, and her story becomes a privileged documentation of the Basque experience in America in the early modern era. In the early modern period, political borders were often in flux, and people were 'strongly aware of the potentially shifting, unstable nature of borders, which are arbitrary and political'. 1 This fluctuation, however, was not confined merely to political boundaries. This is the first publication about 'The Spirit and the Clay', by Shevawn Lynam, to appear in the Basque Country or Spain. It brings attention to the novel as a unique document about the Basque underground resistance against Francoism, based on real events gathered by the Irish author. Nine interconnected chapters tell the stories of ordinary Basque women and men, working against the regime for sixteen years, from the defeat of the pro-democracy side in the civil war to the treason of the UN General Assembly.

LOS MEDIOS DE COMUNICACIÓN SON, desde su aparición en el siglo XVII, después de la invención y la popularización de la imprenta, un agente social de reconocida importancia, también para la formación de variedades estándar de la lengua. Ello es todavía más evidente en el caso de aquellos idiomas que, por diversas razones históricas, no han conocido una gramaticalización y una unificación, en forma de variedad estándar aceptada por toda o la mayoría de la comunidad de hablantes, hasta época reciente. This article establishes a precise relationship between folklore and ethno-nationalism. In particular, it argues that the discursive elements of folklore have been used, as political narrative, within the history of Basque nationalism. The Basque nationalist movement, throughout its history, has been especially adept at harnessing the rhetorical power of language, history, myth and memory in its articulation of a Basque, as opposed to a Spanish, identity. The article concentrates on the specific information selected for transmission by the ideology of Basque nationalism. It is this articulation which establishes links between past and present, myth and ideology, and the relationship between culture and identity in the human experience. These are the bonds which are perhaps most pertinent to the general cause of ethno-nationalism, and the Basque case in particular.

Durante los siglos XII y XV grandes instituciones eclesiásticas navarras, como la real colegiata de Roncesvalles o la catedral de Pamplona, propietarios de extensas cabañas ganaderas, crearon una amplia red de seles y prados, que unía los pastos invernales de territorios como Guipúzcoa, Labourd, Baja Navarra, País de Soule o Béarn y los estivales de los Pirineos y la zona noroccidental navarra. El presente estudio analiza, en primer lugar, la evolución del uso y propiedad de los seles y zonas de pasto que dichas instituciones tuvieron en Guipúzcoa, entre los siglos XII y XV, a los que trasladaban en invierno sus bustos trashumantes. Si bien dichas instituciones fueron abandonando dichas prácticas, en algún caso perduraron más allá del siglo XVI. En segundo lugar, pretende analizar los conflictos surgidos por el paso entre territorios de rebaños que se trasladaban para su repasto y engorde.

В истории Страны Басков и Каталонии особое место занимает проблема возникновения и развития в этих регионах Испании национализма. Появившись примерно в одно время, баскский и каталонский национализм шли разными путями, хотя причины возникновения у них были схожими. В одном случае борьба за свои права носила скорее мирный характер, а в другом одним из ключевых методов стало насилие. В статье предпринята попытка выявить причины таких различий, проследив основные этапы развития национализма в двух регионах.

While Irish involvement on both sides of the Spanish Civil War has been comprehensively accounted for by historians, there remains the issue of the Irish government’s non-intervention in the conflict, even by way of moral support, for the democratic mandate of the Spanish Republic, including the recently established Basque autonomous government. Utilising several previously unexploited Basque primary sources, this article traces and highlights Basque nationalist hopes and expectations around possible Irish government interventions, and how Basque nationalists ultimately felt let down by their ostensible Irish allies. Despite this disappointment, the prevailing pre-civil war perception among Basque nationalists of Ireland as a beacon of national liberation and a spiritual ally of sorts to the Basques was to endure. In exploring Basque-Irish contacts and relations around the Spanish Civil War, the article touches on several interrelated themes, such as misunderstood solidarity, the fate of small stateless nations, the realpolitik of international relations, and historical memory.

Euskal Herriak denbora luzez bizkarra eman dio itsasoari. Euskal Abertzaletasuna sortu zenean orduko errealitateari erreparatu zion euskalduntasunaren eredua finkatzeko. Garai hartan, XIX. mundearen bukaeran, euskal lurraldeen ekonomia landan oinarritua zegoen eta industrializazioaren eragina jasaten ari zen. Arrantza bere garanzia mantendu bazuen ere, garai bateko euskal itsastarraren loraldia urruti geratzen zen. Testuan zehar euskaldunen itsasoan eta itsasoarekiko izan muten garrantzia aztertzen da. Euskaldun batek lehen mundubira burutzea ez da kasualitatea, ordurako euskaldunak mendebaldeko Europako marinel eta itsasgizon trebena eta jantzienak baitziren. La Segunda República (1931República ( -1936 fue un período breve, pero trascendental, en la historia de España en el siglo XX, puesto que, por vez primera, se instauraba un régimen democrático. La República vivió grandes dificultades, debido tanto a la adversa coyuntura internacional como a la crisis económica, a sus propias limitaciones internas y a la continua presión que recibió por parte de los sectores políticos y sociales que, desde su inicio, se mostraron opuestos a ella.

En este artículo se lleva a cabo el estudio sobre los beaterios como formas de religiosidad femenina durante la Edad Media y el papel jugado como la institución que antecedió a los conventos fundados durante la Edad Moderna. Para ello, se procede al análisis de los beaterios por su papel en el nacimiento de la vida conventual femenina vasca, junto con sus características y su implantación en la sociedad vasca de la época.

La ayuda alemana a Franco en la Guerra Civil, materializada en la Legión Cóndor, sembró el territorio vasco de ruina y destrucción en conocidos bombardeos como los de Durango y Gernika (1937). La España sublevada negó su responsabilidad y autoría sobre estos hechos. Tras la guerra, se reconstruyeron edificios encima de las ruinas, pero todavía perduró una materialidad que evidencia la participación nazi en el conflicto: las estelas de caídos alemanes en combate. Analizaremos la percepción de este "legado patrimonial" así como su "gestión" por parte de las comunidades rurales en las que se localizan.

The principal aim of this essay is to analyse ditransitive auxiliary verbs in indicative and non-indicative periphrasis in High-Navarrese dialect, in texts written before 1750. Therefore, *eradun, *nin and *erazan auxiliary verbs are observed systematically in order to make a new proposal about their chronology and extension.
