The production of the high performance structural panel of bamboo particulates emerged with the need to obtain better utilization of this material in manufacturing of Glued Laminated Bamboo (Glubam). It was still intended to use other waste from bamboo chain from its primary processing, such as: tops, bases and small-diameter stems. The advantage of these panels is that the raw material supply is abundant, because it is a fast growing grass of easy levels of maintenance and harvest. The bamboo has been considered an excellent alternative to replace the wood in the market. Its use in the production of particleboards is well-accepted, because they behaved similarly those produced exclusively with wood. This is a preliminary work about a new bamboo-based composite, and it aims to evaluate the improvements in the utilization of reinforcements in particleboards, both made from bamboo species of Dendrocalamus asper. So, it was necessary to produce panels with and without reinforcement, aiming to have evaluation parameters. Castor oil-based polyurethane resin was used as the binder in view of materials with lower toxicity. The results of physical and mechanical properties presented are: specific gravity, moisture content, thickness swelling, water absorption, modulus of rupture (MOR) and modulus of elasticity (MOE) in static bending, internal adhesion and screw pullout strength. The tests were performed according to standard documents EN 310/2000 and NBR 14810/2002, obtaining results superior to those stipulated by them. Therefore, it is shown that this panel is economically viable and environmentally friendly alternative for the utilization of the waste generated in bamboo processing of the species of Dendrocalamus asper species, combined with the castor oil-based polyurethane resin, favoring the used in structures, floorings, furniture, etc.

The focus of this research was to study the utilization of residues from bamboo (Dendrocalamus giganteus) lamination in the manufacturing of panels for structural purposes. Bamboo particleboards were produced under three conditions: pure boards, reinforced with bamboo laminas, and with treated particles. Castor oil-based polyurethane was the resin binder, in view of using lower toxicity materials. The mechanical tests were performed according to Brazilian Standard (NBR) 14810-3 (2006) and European Standard (EN) 310 (2000). The results were superior to those recommended by these and other standards for internal adhesion resistance, modulus of rupture, and elasticity in static bending, as well as to the results of other studies. Starch treatment was an unnecessary stage. According to the conditions of this process, the studied panels showed a good potential for construction use. Moreover, the bamboo particleboards are an economically viable, environmentally friendly, and sustainable alternative for the use of waste generated during the processing of Dendrocalamus giganteus bamboo species, allied with castor oil-based polyurethane resin. The reinforced particleboard and its production process are being licensed as an Innovation Patent in Brazil, (BR 1020130133919-1-2013).

Banyak dari praktek ini menggabungkan desakan dari krisis lingkungan serta melibatkan bentuk pengorganisasian masyarakat dan ekonomi alternatif yang sangat lokal. Meskipun sebagian besar aktivis desain di Indonesia berurusan dengan masalah-masalah yang penting secara global (misalnya, krisis iklim, keamanan pangan, dan migrasi), di luar Asia, masih sedikit yang sadar atau paham tentang kegiatan mereka. Bamboo canes are a unique construction raw material for several types of structures, and there is a growing acceptance of bamboos for structural uses. However, they have as a disadvantage their propensity to attack by insects. In this work, a study of the effectiveness of three different types of preservatives was made with: 1) traditional chemicals, 2) natural substances with low risk to humans and 3) thermal at different temperatures to prevent the Dinoderus minutus beetle attack to Bambusa vulgaris vittata bamboo species. The first two treatments were performed by immersion, and thermal type was made by a drying process. Every two weeks, the attack on three specimens of each treatment was evaluated, including those corresponding to a control specimen without any preservation element. The results showed that most of the treatments by immersion were effective, reducing considerably the attack of the insects in comparison with the control. As for the heat treatment, temperatures less than or equal to 130 °C did not prove to be effective; temperatures of 190 °C and 210 °C revealed acceptable efficiencies.

Las cañas de bambú son un material de construcción único para diversos tipos de estructuras y cada vez hay una mayor aceptación de los bambúes para usos estructurales. Sin embargo, tienen como inconveniente su propensión al ataque por insectos. En este trabajo se hizo un estudio de la eficacia de tres diferentes tipos de preservadores: 1) químicos tradicionales, 2) naturales de bajo riesgo para el ser humano y 3) térmicos a diferentes temperaturas, para prevenir el ataque del insecto escarabajo Dinoderus minutus al bambú de la especie Bambusa vulgaris vittata. Los dos primeros tratamientos se realizaron por inmersión y el tipo térmico fue hecho por el proceso de secado. Cada dos semanas, se evaluó el ataque a tres especímenes de cada tratamiento, incluyendo los correspondientes a un testigo sin elemento preservador alguno.
