lgunas de las prácticas artísticas recientes interesadas en reflexionar sobre cuestiones relativas al género y la diversidad sexual han vuelto su mirada hacia la historia y las metodologías de la excavación del pa­sado. El uso de una temporalidad dislocada (no lineal) propia de las meto­dologías de trabajo queer permite iluminar la compleja relación entre el pre­sente y el pasado de la opresión en cuestiones de género, sexo y sexualidad. Estos trabajos, mediante ejercicios de memoria afectiva, rescatan los poten­ciales de los restos del pasado para repensar el presente y el futuro, a la vez que establecen plataformas de contacto entre sujetos y tiempos.

Where do the escape routes from the Yugoslav war in 1992 and the paths of a highway construction plan from 2020 intersect? Amel Bešlagić traces the trajectories of these entangled routes in his hometown Kozarac, Bosnia and Hercegovina. In two short films he maps and mirrors both the visible and invisible trails of radical topographical and social dislocation in the small town. These regional transformations – driven by war, migration, foreign investments, infrastructural policy, and land politics – reflect the condition of many former Yugoslav territories.

Die hohen französischen Fenster seines Ateliers in der rue Émile Gilbert am geschäftigen Vorplatz der Pariser Gare de Lyon hatte Georges Rouault in den 1940er Jahren weiß streichen lassen, um ungestört seiner Arbeit nachgehen zu können. Nur ein kleines Loch für den Blick zur Turmuhr des Bahnhofs wurde beim Anstrich ausgespart. Obwohl mitten in der Stadt lebend, in der er geboren war und die er liebte, befand sich der Maler hier doch abgeschieden in einem eigenen kleinen Universum, in das weder die Geschäftigkeit und das äußere Treiben der Stadt, noch fremde Blicke dringen sollten. Diese Tatsache erscheint wie ein Sinnbild der von ihm zeitlebens geübten Diskretion hinsichtlich der eigenen Arbeit. 1921 hatte es darüber in einem Brief Rouaults an den Schriftsteller André Suarès geheißen: "J'ai toujours l'impression d'être nu et grelottant si je me montre même à ceux-là qui me comprennent infiniment plus et mieux que tous les autres. Cela va jusqu'à la douleur physique…" 1 Und noch in der zweiten Hälfte der 1940er Jahre schrieb er rechtfertigend: L'Atelier du peintre doit être respecté. Les projets, les ébauches, les tableaux en cours d'exécution, souvent abandonnés, pendant des années, s'y accumulent. […] Ce n'est souvent qu'après bien des hésitations, de véritables conflits intérieurs, […] qu'il accepte de livrer au public […] l'oeuvre enfin achevée qu'il détache de lui comme le fruit tombant de l'arbre qui le portait. 2 Auch die engsten Freunde wussten von dieser Zurückhaltung Rouaults zu berichten. 2. Nostalgie. Eine Einführung. "Menschen arbeiten, Menschen werben umeinander. Die Erfüllung im Beruf zu suchen ist wie Heiraten, um die Liebe zu finden. Und so werden Ehepaare daraus: Erst bedeckt sie der Mehltau der Gewohnheit, dann die Taubheit der Routine, dann der Panzer der Enttäuschung, schließlich verkappen sie sich in der Rüstung der Bitterkeit. Und es muss nur einer kommen und ein paar alte Worte wieder in Gebrauch nehmen, die Redeordnung verschieben, und schon wenden sie sich nostalgisch der eigenen Vergangenheit zu und treten auf einem einzigen Gefühlder Rührung, dem Heimweh, der Schwärmerei-die Rückreise in die eigene Geschichte an." 22 Es ist der Nährboden für Nostalgie, den Roger Willemsen hier andeutet. "[D]ie feinen Haarrisse in einer Beziehung, das Altern von Menschen, Städten, Kunstwerken, die Enttäuschung, [...] die unaufhaltsame Arbeit der Zeit" 23 , lassen sich Willemsen zufolge als "fast unmerkliche" 24 Brüche des Lebens verstehen. "Nostalgie gedeiht immer auf dem Boden des Wandels" 25 konstatiert Daniel Rettig 2013, "[e]gal ob Euro-Krise, Energiewende oder Klimawandel-die Welt scheint aus den sprichwörtlichen Fugen zu geraten, die Gegenwart hektischer, die Zukunft unsicherer." 26 Kein Wunder also, dass die Proust'sche "Suche nach der verlorenen Zeit" auch im 21. Jahrhundert nicht vorbei ist. Wer kennt es nicht, das Gefühl das früher oder später jeden einmal erfasst. Adjektive wie altmodisch, rührselig, sentimental, rückschrittlich-mit dem Wort Nostalgie verbindet der Mensch viele Bedeutungen, bisweilen auch weniger freundliche Klischees. Im Volksmund wird damit das Schwelgen in der guten, alten Zeit assoziiert und vor allem persönliche, emotionale Erinnerungen, wie sie Fotographien vergangener Tage auslösen können. Wie zeigt sich die Nostalgie im 21. Jahrhundert? Was sind ihre Auslöser, ihre Verlockung? Das schillernde Phänomen, das nicht nur als psychologisches sondern auch als politisches, ökonomisches und historisches Phänomen zu verstehen ist, 9

During the 1990s the notion of performativity in art gradually swayed away from its canonical form in which performance art was primarily associated with body-art, acts performed by artists using their own bodies as materials and conduits of expression and meaning.
As opposed to the individual presence/action of the body as projected upon and as channeling and expressing this projection, there was the emerging tendency to consider a body in art as a body-in-common, body-in-collectivity, always and only in relation to other bodies. Mainly because of its commodification (the full denial of its emancipatory promise) the enduring solitary body of an artist could no longer represent or construct a dissensus.

Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht das künstlerische Werk von Francis Alӱs auf "Strategien des Unproduktiven" sowie auf das Verhältnis zwischen Arbeit und Nicht-Arbeit. Unproduktivität wird hier auf zweifache Weise verstanden: zum Einen als Nicht-Produzieren (im Sinne des Nichttuns, des Nichtarbeitens) und zum Anderen als Nichts-Produzieren (hinsichtlich der Performanz und Immaterialität von Alӱs' künstlerischem Tun). Drei Begriffspaare durchziehen diese Untersuchung auf mehreren Ebenen: Produktivität und Unproduktivität, Arbeit und Nicht-Arbeit sowie Materialität und Immaterialität. Den Ausgangspunkt der folgenden Betrachtungen bildet im zweiten Kapitel die Annahme, dass der Akt des Gehens, der Alӱs vor allem in den ersten Jahren als künstlerische Methode diente, eine unproduktive Praxis darstellt. Film theorist/critic David Bordwell once noted that film scholars ― "know how to make movies mean." Filmmakers, regardless of their receptiveness to critical interpretations of their work, might find some irony in this locus of the meaning-maker’s identity. Through their choices, filmmakers are the ones who "make movies mean" in the first place.  In my film-in-progress, Penelope’s Odyssey, I decided to consciously engage with the post-facto vision of meaning-making. Employing a purposeful approach to film form, limited dialogue, and minimal narrative-driven action, I "make my movie mean" and make viewers’ interpretive activity requisite to understanding. Penelope’s Odyssey consists of short sections set apart with intertitles that are both precise and elusive (Year One: Settling, Year Ten: Slipping, Year Fifteen: Pushing, etc.).  Each section has a distinctive schematic of film technique and visual content, making film form the power source of narrative changes in Penelope’s emotional journey over the twenty years of Odysseus’ absence. One year employs quick straight cuts, another slow fades to black, another superimposes images with dissolves – establishing a different mood, rhythm, and pace to the passage of time for each year. Penelope’s perspective and world view change: from images filling the frame to ones cropped, reduced, and nearly overwhelmed by a black background; from the domestic sphere to scenes in nature; from point-of-view to omniscience.  Close-ups connote intimacy – or is that claustrophobia? Long shots, a sense of emotional and physical distancing – or perhaps contemplative ease? By deliberately emphasizing variations of form, I aim viewers’ attention at a highly premeditated, mediated, and intentional space, encouraging reflection and meaning-creation. Ambiguity is inherent in this process, and viewers’ interpretations may result in alternative narrative conclusions. I made my own meaning out of Penelope’s twenty years, and I actively offer the same option to my viewers.

The artistic theory that French director Jacques Rivette (1928-2016) developed throughout his long career is concentrated in a very singular way in La Belle Noiseuse (1991). His reflection on issues such as the nature of the artist, the traumatic process of creation and the very essence of the artwork draws from many sources, most of them literary, which he links together very suggestively. Among the literary sources, Balzac's famous story The Unknown Masterpiece (Le Chef-d'oeuvre inconnu, 1831), of which the film is a very free adaptation, and Ibsen's last drama, When We Dead Awaken (Når vi døde vågner, 1899), stand out most notably. Rivette's fruitful connection of both texts is a matter that has barely been addressed by critics, despite its crucial importance for the interpretation of the film's artistic theory. This article analyzes this connection, focusing on the reasons that led Rivette to choose one of Ibsen's most obscure and least known plays and on the subtle way it is interwoven with Balzac's text.

Un Chien Andalou by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí is one of the few films that is granted the title of being a wholly surrealist film. Made as a mockery of the aestheticism predecessors used when creating a surrealist piece of film (Thiher, 1977, pg. 39), Un Chien Andalou aims to shun the expectations placed on cinematic art in twentieth century France, and invites the viewer to free themselves from societal norms and experience an unconscious world where rules are merely a suggestion. Quite literally, Buñuel tells the viewer to ‘see with another eye’ when he opens the film with him slashing the eyeball of a woman (Buñuel, 1929, 1:35-1:44), and thrusts the viewer into a dreamscape made to shock the sensibilities of bourgeoisie life.

This sense of absolute dream-made liberation is what Buñuel and Dalí draw on for their inspiration of the film and ask the viewer to shed their preconceived notions of morally acceptable behavior. The film is filled with the idea of lusting after those who you cannot have because of the way society expects young people to conduct themselves sexually. However, in this paper, I will argue that the sexual liberation that Dalí and Buñuel present is one born out of the sexist values of their time and that the film is their ode to their own fear of women.

Zeitweise schlossen sich Carlo Carra (1881-1966) und G iorgio Morandi (1890-1964) dem Stil an.AIIen gemeinsam war eine starke Rückbesinnung auf die Kunst des Quattrocento, insbesondere auf Uccello und Piero della Francesca, deren formale Qualitäten, die komplexe Verschränkung von Fläche und Raum Carra und de Chirico besonders schätzten. Den Begriff "metaphysisch" prägte Appollinaire 1913.

Wir wollen lebenslänglich Stühle flechten.«, 1 dichtet Meret Oppenheim und gibt damit gleich mehrere leitende Oppositionen vor: Hier der Stuhl, eigentlich die Stühle, dort jene Couch der Psychoanalyse; hier das Flechten der Stühle, das Machen und Herstellen gegenüber jenem Prozess des Textuellen, des Geflechts, das jeder Traumarbeit, jedem Träumen vorgängig zu sein scheint; Flechten bzw. Weben nicht nur in der griechischen Antike, den Moiren überlassen, auch noch im Bauhaus weiblich konnotiertes Kunsthandwerk gegenüber der meist männlichen Kunstproduktion und jener Interpretation des Geflechts durch den meist männlichen Analytiker -Stühle flechten -und das noch lebenslänglich -spricht auch eine Art Drohung aus: Die Handarbeit, das Ineinanderwirken von Hand und Gegenstand, die unerbittliche Arbeit am Verwobenen. Menschen sind nicht autonom, das Subjekt erscheint nicht gegenüber einer Welt, einem großen Außen, sondern immer schon darin verwickelt und zwar ein Leben lang. Zudem ist diese Verwicklung nicht auf ein großes, heroisches Schicksal bezogen, sondern auf den Platz, auf dem eine Person zum Sitzen kommen kann. Die Position des Subjekts muss sich kontinuierlich herstellen. Die Stühle vervielfältigen aber die Positionen des Subjekts und bringen wiederum psychoanalytische Überlegungen ins Spiel: der Platztausch, die Verschiebung, Verdrängung, die Frage nach dem Platz des Subjekts innerhalb der symbolischen Ordnung der Sprache. In Hinsicht auf den Titel dieses Sammelbandes -die Frage nach einer Therapie der Dinge -bekommt der Stuhl als funktionales Möbelstück und Dreh-bzw. Angelpunkt von Design-und Konsumtheorie zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts, präziser in der Opposition von Surrealismus und Bauhaus, eine besondere Bedeutung. Gerade die Zunahme der Massenkultur und -produktion, gibt den Dingen eine neue Rolle. Dabei oszillieren sie in der symbolischen Ordnung der Sprache zwischen Warenfetisch und Fetischobjekt, mithin zwischen Karl Marx und Sigmund Freud. 2 Dazu trägt nicht nur die Verwendung neuer Werkstoffe bei, 3 sondern auch die Funktionalisierung, wie sie im Bauhaus konzipiert oder vom Surrealismus aufgehoben wird. Beide Design-bzw. Kunstströmungen zeichnen sich durch ihr Interesse an der materiellen Welt, der Materialität der Dinge sowie ihrer symbolischen wie imaginären Bedeutung aus. Die Funktionalisierung jedenfalls markiert den Kern einer Therapie der Dinge: Dinge müssen funktionieren -müssen sie? Jean Baudrillard konstatiert: »The surrealist object comes into being simultaneously with the functional object as its mockery, its overstatement.« 4 Surrealistische Objekte wehren sich, besser sie ver-wehren sich einer ihnen zugeschriebenen Funktion. Sie lassen sich nicht beauftragen. Ihr Auftrag ist ein anderer, nämlich gerade auf die Allmacht der Funktionalisierung zu verweisen. Gleichzeitig, so stellt es Baudrillard fest, erscheinen Dinge, die auf ihre Funktion reduziert werden, »unreal and potentially surrealistic«. 5 Der Stuhl, dessen Funktion es ist, den menschlichen Körper sitzend zu halten, wirkt, so dargestellt, pathologisch. Das Sitzen ist eine Nicht-Funktion, da sich Menschen auch einfach auf den Boden setzen könnten. Die Praxis des Sitzens entpuppt sich als kulturell determiniert und der Stuhl als ein Instrument dieser kulturellen Determinierung. Aber es ist weniger der Surrealismus, der sich um Stühle kümmert, als das Bauhaus: Freischwinger (S 533), Barcelona chairs, B3 Wassily, oder der S 32 mit geflochtener Sitzfläche von Marcel Breuer. Meret Oppenheims Stuhl dagegen, ein Möbelstück, das sie entworfen und für einen Wettbewerb eingereicht hat, 6 ist aus Ahornholz, wirke wie ein bäuerliches 2 Vgl. Hartmut Böhme:

As a possible cross section of cinematic narratology and the theory of intermediality the following essay assesses some of the effects of foregrounding the single, intermedial image within film. Specific figurations of intermediality that are experienced via the consciousness of single images, or some kind of “imageness” (i.e. as “intermedial references”) are presented as well as the modes in which they can interact with the narrative structure of a film. This interaction ranges from a momentary interference with the narrative structure of a film to disrupting it altogether; it may consist in constituting the gravity centre of a plot, or even in becoming the “canvas” for a palimpsest of narrative modes and narratives

Wenyi is an imported term from Japan and became a local term in China for literary discussion in the early-twentieth century. The term was later adopted by the film industry to designate films with ‘literary’ quality. Recent studies show that wenyi was widely used for branding films after 1935. Yet before that, evidence shows that the notion had already been appropriated by film critics, directors and scriptwriters in their conceptualization of what a good film should be. By focusing on Silver Star (Yinxing, 19261928), the most important film magazine for promoting film-as-art in the 1920s, and the anthology Film and Wenyi (dianying yu wenyi, 1928), this article
aims to provide a crucial account on the discursive practice of film and wenyi in the 1920s, reflecting upon the early theorization of wenyi in film. Notions like neo-heroism, which was derived from Romain Rolland’s thinking, and symbols of anguish, which was adapted from Kuriyagawa Hakuson via Lu Xun’s translation, are employed to articulate the relationship between film and wenyi by the group of writers from Silver Star.

This paper offers an exploration of Julian Rosefeld's film Manifesto (2015), which is a fascinating amalgamation and interpretation of modernist, avant gardist manifestos. The paper employs the film itself as a hermeneutical framework, especially is use of the rhetorical-hermeneutical device of repetition, and also makes use of René Girard's mimetic theory. Through this double-hermeneutic, two aims are set out: the first being to offer a way to rethink the meaning of the art manifesto as that modernist genre par excellence and the second being a way to rethink trends in artistic and creative production in general.

I n 2009, the artist Milica Tomić walked through the streets of Belgrade, casually carrying an AK-47 assault rifle and a plastic shopping bag, passing through the sites where the People's Liberation Movement carried out successful resistance operations against Nazi occupation during World War II. The action/intervention was accompanied by a video work, which used the film-making technique of Russian avant-garde filmmaker Lev Kuleshov to construct a "creative geography" where various locations, places and times all appeared to occur in the same site over a continuous period. Tomić argues that the use of "creative geography" actually imprisoned her character in the editing loop of the video, "unable to find a way out, for this newly-created/old territory. This territory, even though it is made up of emancipatory politics, decisions and actions, is imprisoned and occupied by a new time, the era of permanent war." 1 Through her action and media work, Tomić sought to resist the forms of collective forgetting in Belgrade, not only regarding the recent violence in the Balkans, but also in the global context of increased militarization around the world. Dedicated to the "Belgrade 6," the performance created a doubled vision, tying the current climate of militarism and "security" to the resistance to fascism in World War II. The "Belgrade 6" were activists accused of inciting, assisting in and executing an attack on the Greek Embassy in Belgrade in 2009, in solidarity with the hunger strike of the political prisoner Thodoros Iliopoulos. Members of the Serbian Anarco-Syndicalist Initiative (ASI), they were arrested and held in custody for six months, charged with "international terrorism" (Figure 1.1).

Das ist eine gute Definition für die paranoische Grundstimmung unserer Zeit, aber auch für die Künstliche Intelligenz, deren Bilder »schön sind, wie das zufällige Zusammentreffen einer Nähmaschine und eines Regenschirms auf einem Seziertisch«, so der berühmte Satz, den die Surrealisten so sehr liebten. Der Autor nimmt die im Internet kursierenden »surreal images« zum Anlass, um die unerwartete Nachbarschaft von Surrealismus und ökologischem Denken in den KI-generierten Bildern zu reflektieren. In diesen Bildern findet er nicht nur zentrale Konzepte und Techniken des Surrealismus, sondern auch eine »originale Syntax«. Jacques Lacan bezeichnet damit den Zusammenhang von Paranoia und Theorie, also eine ganz eigene Art der Herstellung von Wissen über die Welt, eine paranoischen Analytik, die kulturellen Vorurteile und Verzerrungen einer Gesellschaft beinhaltet, die sich selbst im Spiegel sieht. Wie entkommt man einer kritischen Praxis, die dem Verdacht eine methodologische Schlüsselrolle zugesteht? Der Autor findet in den Gedanken der Queerdenkerin Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick den Schlüssel für eine kritische Neubewertung unserer digitalen Kultur. Auf der Suche nach »reparativen Praktiken, die paranoide kritische Projekte durchdringen« (Sedgwick) öffnet er einen Raum, in dem wir uns von der festgefahrenen Frage ‹Ist KI Kunst und wie können wir das feststellen?› wegbewegen können, um uns einer anderen Fragen zu widmen: Was kann KI-Kunst?

by DUSTIN CHAD ALLIGOOD (Under the Direction of Isabelle Loring Wallace) ABSTRACT This text treats the drawings, paintings, and prints of Latvian-born American artist Vija Celmins as a systematic engagement with the embattled ideal of the photograph. The themes that dominate her artistic output—the sea, the sky, and the spider web; treated in chapters two, three, and four respectively—will be the structure around which this text attempts to grapple with the foundational questions posed by her pictures and their engagement with photography. Chapter two addresses the ways in which the historical paradigms of landscape and the sublime may be present in Celmins’s work. Chapter three examines the complex rhetorics of presence and absence engendered by the highly articulated physicality of her images. Chapter four attends to Celmins’s possibly embedded citation of the formal structures of the grid and perspective.

Certainly practice (in this case frequent re-evocation) keeps memories fresh and alive in the same manner in which a muscle often used remain efficient, but it is also true that a memory evoked too often, and expressed in the form of a story, tends to become fixed in a stereotype, in a form tested by experience, crystallized, perfected, adorned, installing itself in the place of the raw memory and growing at its expense.

Kaum eine Aussage Martin Scorseses verdeutlicht besser, wie wenig man Regisseuren trauen sollte, wenn sie sich zu ihren eigenen Werken äußern. Mal neigen sie dazu, ihre praktische Arbeit am Film in Interviews fortzusetzen, mal ziehen sie es vor, wie in Scorseses Fall, ihre Leistungen zu untertreiben und zu unterspielen. Ganz sicher ist The Age of Innocence (1991/92) nicht einfach eine neue Art von Historien- oder Kostümfilm, noch ist er das, was innerhalb der popular culture gemeinhin unter der Warenbezeichnung ‚romantisch‘ gehandelt wird. Selbst bei einem nur flüchtigen Blick auf Scorseses Verfilmung von Edith Whartons gleichnamigem Roman und Sittengemälde (erschienen 1920) über die Gesellschaft der New Yorker Geldaristokratie des späten 19. Jahrhunderts wird deutlich, dass es dem amerikanischen Ausnahmeregisseur Anfang der Neunziger auch mit diesem Film gelungen war, weit über die Sehgewohnheiten und die damit einher gehenden Erwartungshaltungen der Kenner seiner vorherigen Filme ...

A través del análisis de diferentes piezas de videoarte español de las últimas décadas argumento la capacidad de este medio audiovisual para cuestionar la construcción normativa del sexo, del género y de la sexualidad, así como para establecer representaciones y condiciones favorables a su subversión. En primer lugar, propongo la emergencia de contra-discursos simbólicos, culturales y autorepresentativos como uno de los rasgos característicos de los activismos LGBTIQA+. En base a la teoría de los Nuevos Movimientos Sociales, considero las producciones culturales de los activismos queer como micro-políticas emancipadoras. Después, argumento la capacidad del videoarte como medio y lenguaje para promover y circular mensajes críticos y subversivos. Gracias al empuje genealógico del feminismo, el videoarte español se configuró como espacio prolífico para la reflexión sobre cuerpos, identidades y subjetividades que ponen en crisis la Norma sexo-genérica. De entre la fructífera conversación entre los activismos queer y el videoarte español, pongo el foco sobre tres tendencias. Primero, el videoarte que desnaturaliza la norma de género binario y heterosexual, especialmente cuestionando las categorías de la feminidad y la masculinidad. En segundo lugar, el videoarte que reflexiona sobre la posibilidad de identidades políticas y estratégicas nómadas, a través de técnicas de encuadre, espacio escénico o narrativas. Finalmente, el cuestionamiento de la normalidad en las prácticas sexuales, a través de uno de los corpus de videoarte queer más prolíficos: el postporno. Concluyo ampliando la definición de vídeo-expandido, para introducir en ella los significados políticos de la resistencia y la emancipación LGBTIQA+.

The subject matter of this 2019 graphic novel has persisted only in rumors, footnotes, and scattered remarks. In the over eighty years since Salvador Dalí hatched Giraffes on Horseback Salad, an outlandish attempt to superimpose Harpo, Chico, and Groucho into his surrealistic vision, very little has come to light about the project. The result is a visually striking, occasionally amusing, but narratively lackluster graphic reimagining of a lost movie that never was. While the creative team manages to capture the zaniness of the Marx Brothers and the bizarre inventiveness of Dalí—thanks particularly to Pertega’s stylized illustrations—much of the book involves Groucho and Chico nonsensically prancing around in a Dalí painting. This seems to be true to the source material: Dalí was captivated by the brothers’ reality-bending antics and lampooning of genteel society, but was evidently less interested in the narrative aspects of their films. Here, we have gags and over-the-top imagery in search of a story.

Seit dem Ende der 1960er Jahre setzt innerhalb der konzeptuellen Kunsttendenzen eine Auseinandersetzung mit dem neuen Paradigma der Informationsgesellschaft ein. Vorstellungen von den neuen elektronischen Kommunikationssystemen finden nicht nur in den populären Medien ein Echo, sondern auch in zwei 1970 in New York realisierten Ausstellungen, Information im Museum of Modern Art und Software im Jewish Museum. Die hierin gezeigten Auftragsarbeiten lenkten die öffentliche Rezeption auf die gesellschaftlichen Herausforderungen des technologischen Wandels. Ebenso forcierten die kuratorischen Konzeptionen eine Annäherung der künstlerischen Methoden an das neue kulturelle a priori der Computer-und Informationstechnologie, verknüpft mit der Forderung nach Einbindung der ästhetisch-künstlerischen Sensibilität in diese vorrangig ökonomisch motivierten Entwicklungen.

Im Rahmen einer Vortragsreihe am Schweizerischen Institut für Kunstwissenschaft in Zürich, die unter dem Mollo "Tankstelle USA" verschiedene Facetten amerikanisch-schweizerischer {Wechsel-)Wirkungen thematisierte, fiel mir die Ehre zu, Ober das Verhältnis von amerikanischer und schweizerischer Videokunst zu referieren. Das Korpus, besonders in Übersee, ist umfangreich: weniger die Gefahr, etwas zu Obersehen, als alles vermeintlich zu Oberblicken, legte eine Schwerpunktsetzung nahe. Obgleich von der Schweizer Kunstgeschichte bisher mehrheitlich verschlafen (die Einladung ans SIK gehört wohl zu den noch seltenen und löblichen Erwachnissen ... ), ist ja Video längst nicht mehr die monothematische Sparte, die es zwar nie war, aber die es in den Augen so mancher auch professioneller .. Kunstinteressierter .. noch 150 Jahre bleiben wird : wir erinnern uns an das nie ausdiskutierte Verhältnis von Kunst und Fotografie. ..

Animating the field of experimentation. Correlations between experimentation and animation in the Service de la Recherche (French public TV, 1960-1974)

This article tries to answer the following question: why can we say that musique concrète and animation are of the "same family", belong to the "same orientation" (Michel Marmin) within the Service de la Recherche? Three answers appear: the reflection and the practice of image by image is a privileged place for cinema of research ; but the difficulties encountered favor rather a work on image after image, to understand the transformation of "visual objects"; animation, finally, is the privileged vehicle for a pedagogy of the eye throughout the history of the Service.


Animer le champ expérimental. Corrélations entre expérimentation et animation au sein du Service de la Recherche

Cet article essaie de répondre à la question suivante : pourquoi peut-on dire que musique concrète et animation sont de la « même famille », relèvent de la « même direction » (Michel Marmin) au sein du Service de la Recherche ? Trois réponses apparaissent : la réflexion et la pratique de l’image par image est un lieu privilégié pour une cinéma de recherche ; mais les difficultés rencontrées favorisent plutôt un travail sur l’image après image, pour penser la transformation des « objets visuels » ;  l’animation, enfin, est le support privilégié pour une pédagogie de l’œil tout au long de l’histoire du Service.

The main problem discussed in the paper is the authenticity of speech of the inhabitants of Chełmno in the sequence filmed outside the parish church in Claude Lanzmann's Shoah. The authors analyze a number of characteristic features of the bystanders' language vis a vis the French translation provided by the interpreter Barbara Janicka, and the English subtitles. It is argued that the language of the bystanders carries important information on the speakers' individual and collective identity, and gives clues on the construction of memory, not just on the level of meanings, but also in its materiality. The analysis focuses on four planes which were identified as important for the construction of the implicit messages: semantic ambiguity of the utterances; narrative techniques used by the speakers; verb forms, especially the impersonal use of verbs; and syntax. The specific linguistic traits testify to the fact that the speakers lack adequate tools to verbalize their traumatic memories and to reflect the reality that they were part of. The analysis of the linguistic landscape of the scene also leads to conclusions about the instrumentalization of
