In den Jahren nach 1900 wurde in Weimar der Versuch unternommen, Kunst und Kultur neu zu begründen. So umwälzend waren die Industrialisierung und ihre gesellschaftlichen Folgen, dass Künstler und Intellektuelle, beeindruckt von den Schriften Friedrich Nietzsches, nach einem radikalen Neubeginn suchten. Der junge Großherzog Wilhelm Ernst unterstützte sie am Beginn seiner von 1901 bis 1918 dauernden Regentschaft darin. Weimar wurde zu einem Zentrum der Avantgarde. Als einer ihrer Protagonisten wirkte der 1863 in Antwerpen geborene und 1957 in Zürich verstorbene Architekt und Designer Henry van de Velde. Er brach mit der Tradition, entwickelte den »Neuen Stil« und setzte seine Vorstellung der vernunftgemäßen Konstruktion in den von ihm geschaffenen Raumausstattungen um. Möbel und Interieurs folgten in ihrer Raumwirkung einem einheitlichen künstlerischen Konzept.

Numerous buildings in Europe were destroyed and damaged during the Second World War. Many places of worship damaged due to the targeting of particularly religious buildings at the end of the war. Berlin is among the cities that suffered losses. Repairing the damage to churches that have a place in the collective memory and designing new churches played a key role for people to hold on to life again. In the 1960s and early 1970s, new church construction in West Berlin experienced its pick for this reason. In this period, which Goldhagen describes as an interregnum between an expiring Modernism and dawning Postmodernism, experimental designs emerged under the influence of Brutalist Architecture. This study examines the reflection of Brutalism in religious buildings in post-war Europe, focusing on the Brutalist-style churches built in Berlin in the 1960s. “Memorability as an Image,” one of the basic principles of Brutalism put forward by Reyner Banham, has been an approach that serves the purpose of religious buildings to create a landmark for the city. Other principles of style “valuation of materials; as found” and “clear exhibition of structure” found their equivalents mostly in interior designs. In this context, the study comprehensively examines three examples of churches that create an image for the city and have experimental interiors; Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church (Egon Eiermann, 1961), Maria Regina Martyrum Memorial Church (Hans Schädel & Friedrich Ebert, 1963) and Paul Gerhardt Church (Hermann Fehling, Daniel Gogel & Peter Pfankuch, 1964). Defining a point of identity for the city, these churches not only represent a point of social unification for the community but also aim to strengthen the faith between God and human beings with their impressive interiors. It is possible to capture the same spiritual effect in the blue light leaking through the glass blocks with exposed concrete frames in Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, in the light shining through the exposed concrete beams in Maria Regina Martyrum Memorial Church, and in the colors reflected from the stained glass in Paul Gerhardt Church. This study examines the concepts of image, interior design parameters, and light through examples of 1960s Berlin churches.

Gemessen an der Planungswut der Machthaber hat die Architektur des Nationalsozialismus vergleichsweise wenige Bauten tatsächlich errichtet. Insbesondere bei den repräsentativen Staatsbauten ist daher auf ihre propagandistische Rolle zu verweisen. Diese nie gebauten Architekturen haben jüngst in der Populärkultur – Filme, Serien, Videospiele – eine starke Aufmerksamkeit erfahren. Bemerkenswert ist, dass die Inszenierung dabei in einer gewissen Tradition steht, die gleichwohl zu hinterfragen ist: Neben der Frage, ob es moralisch legitim ist, die politische Kulissenarchitektur des Dritten Reiches derart zu überhöhen, sind methodische Überlegungen anzustellen. Ein Abwägen der Chancen und Risiken bietet sich daher an.

Quattro+Una scuole sono raccontate - descritte - in questo Quaderno, tappe della storia professionale di un maestro dell’architettura, realizzazioni/testimonianza di una visione legata alla qualità dell’abitare per bambini e insegnanti, attente ai luoghi in cui sono inserite. Sono scuole costruite in un lasso di tempo ampio, molto distanti tra loro in dimensione e localizzazione, che disegnano un “processo continuo” non lineare e tutto personale così come per le altre architetture da lui costruite. Le diverse opere - l’asilo a Fielis, la scuola elementare a Sutrio, la scuola per bambini dai sei ai tredici anni a Berlino, il nido e la scuola dell’infanzia a San Pietro in Casale, più le trentatré scuole elementari e medie Valdadige - vengono messe a confronto, di volta in volta, con le posizioni verso l’architettura di Gino Valle, con approcci pedagogici, con aspetti normativi. Questo Quaderno di appunti non esaurisce la storia di queste architetture scolastiche, cerca piuttosto di far emergere l’attenzione che, da parte
dell’architetto, è stata rivolta al tema, per trattarlo come materiale utile per successivi progetti.

The aim of this paper is to analyze László Péri's artistic development from painting to architecture between 1921 and 1924 from a transnational and interdisciplinary perspective. The invention of his «shaped canvases» (Herzogenrath 1973, 42) is linked here both to the theory of Gleichwertigkeit (equivalence) of the artist Arthur Segal and to the concept of Gestaltung as a method characteristic of the so-called International Constructivism. Péri's new spatial cognition or Gestaltung of space is the main research interest he shared with Ludwig Hilberseimer and El Lissitzky. A comparison of their works would help to interpret Péri's architecture turn as a terminus of his constructivist method politically oriented.

In this study, a multisensory methodology is used to assess acoustic comfort aboard different real-world metros by means of subjective annoyance and cognitive performance measures. Two experimental conditions were compared: unimodal versus bimodal. Immersive virtual reality was used to simulate journeys aboard metro coaches. Participants performed four tasks (Rey Test, Verbal Fluency, Backward Counting and Auditory Words Discrimination) while listening to metro sounds (unimodal condition) or while listening to metro sounds within a virtual metro coach (bimodal condition). At the end of each journey, participants reported their degree of noise annoyance. The results showed that cognitive performances were worse in the bimodal than in the unimodal condition. Moreover, the bimodal condition affected negatively the capacity to discriminate words and to count backward. However, reported noise annoyance was higher in the unimodal than bimodal condition. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed.

Mit dem Tod Friedrich des Großen im August 1786 und über ihn hinaus wurden Fragen der Erinnerungskultur für einen ›Großen Mann‹ virulent, die eine besondere Ausprägung erfuhren, trafen sie doch im letzten Drittel des 18. Jahrhunderts auf eine sich mehr und mehr ausprägende Denkmalkultur. Der spätere preußische Hofbildhauer Johann Gottfried Schadow (1764–1850), zum Todeszeitpunkt des Königs junges Mitglied einer klassizistischen Künstlerkolonie in Rom, sendet einen Denkmalentwurf nach Berlin, den er später immer wieder überarbeiten wird: Inmitten einer dorischen Tempelarchitektur, entworfen vom Künstlerkollegen Hans Christian Genelli, wird der Verstorbene als thronender Philosoph stilisiert. Am kurfürstlichen Palais in Trier befinden sich zwei weibliche Sphingen aus dem 18. Jahrhundert, die auf den Bildhauer Ferdinand Tietz zurückgehen. Die ältesten Wiedergaben von Sphingen stammen aus dem alten Ägypten. In pharaonischer Zeit sind Sphingen zumeist männlich, wie z.B. die des Königs Chefren in Giza aus der Zeit um 2500 v. Chr. (Abb. 5). Indes sind auch von der Königin Hatschepsut (1479-1458 v. Chr.) Sphingen überliefert und sie ist nicht die einzige Regentin, die als Sphinx dargestellt wurde. Was hat es per se mit altägyptischen Sphingen auf sich und wie kommt ein pharaonisches Design nach Trier? Diesen Fragen wird im Folgenden nachgegangen. Die Sphingen am Kurfürstlichen Palais in Trier Zwei weibliche, halb aufgerichtete Sphingen mit vorgestreckten Pranken auf je einem hohen Podest (Abb. 1-4) sind am kurfürstlichen Palais in Trier platziert. Wie bei den altägyptischen Sphingenalleen (Abb. 6) stehen sie einander gegenüber. Bei den derzeitig präsentierten handelt es sich um Kopien. Auf den ersten Blick wirken die identisch, doch unterscheiden sie sich in Details. Sie tragen Ohrringe, Schmuck um den Hals und um die Unterarme sowie Kleidung, doch sind diese bei jeder anders ausgeprägt. Über dem Löwenrücken befindet sich ein mit Quasten verzierter Umhang. Die weiblichen Gesichter sind lächelnd.

Particularly in the 1920s, some architects in the USA and Europe took ideas from archaeological reconstruction drawings of ancient Near Eastern architecture. In Berlin, the Karstadt department store building was a spectacular testimony to this reception. The architect Philipp Schaefer was inspired by a reconstruction drawing of the Anu-Adad Temple in Assur (Northern Iraq), made by Walter Andrae, the excavator of the site, shortly before the construction of the department store. Zur Zeit der Abfassung dieses Manuskripts wird kontrovers darüber diskutiert, ob das Kaufhaus Karstadt am Berliner Hermannplatz mit seiner Fassade aus den 1920er Jahren wiederaufgebaut werden soll. Am 21. Juni 1929 wurde am Hermannplatz, wo die Bezirke Kreuzberg und Neukölln aneinandergrenzen, das erste Kaufhaus der Rudolph Karstadt AG in Berlin eröffnet. 1 (Abb. 1) Zu dieser Zeit war der Hermannplatz der Kreuzungspunkt von zwei Untergrundbahnen und somit der wichtigste U-Bahn-Verkehrsknotenpunkt im Süden der Berliner Innenstadt. Dieser Kreuzungsbahnhof war zwischen 1925 und 1927 angelegt worden. Aufgrund der Baumaßnahmen musste eine Zeile von Wohnhäusern an der Westseite des Hermannplatzes, auf Kreuzberger Seite, abgerissen werden. 2 Der Hermannplatz wurde verbreitert, da auch auf den Straßen zukünftig mit einem größeren Verkehrsaufkommen gerechnet wurde. Gleichzeitig war eine große Fläche für eine neue Bebauung geschaffen worden. Auf diesem Grundstück sollte vom Winter 1927/28 bis Sommer 1929 das neue Karstadt-Kaufhaus entstehen. 3 In Berlin gab es zu dieser Zeit bereits eine Anzahl von Warenhäusern, von denen das von Alfred Messel erbaute Kaufhaus Wertheim in der Leipziger 1

“There’s no such thing as ‘Jewish’ architecture.
Lacking historical precedents, creating a Jewish architecture
simply isn’t possible.” In 2015, in the
Jerusalem Post, Gerard Heumann writes this peremptory
statement, as if to wipe out any doubt
about the possibility of writing a history of Jewish
architecture. While convinced of the contrary, this
text intends rather to investigate whether and what
were the Jewish components that influenced modernist
architecture.
In the chapter “Judaism and Space-Time Conception
of Art,” the historian Bruno Zevi underlines
how the theme is of particular interest as it leads
to a denial of any possible “ethnic and anthropological
misunderstanding”: “The Jewish message
influences many artists who are not Jews: this is
evidenced in architecture as there are very few Jewish
architects in history.” We must therefore try to
analyze those components of the Jewish message
that are widely found first of all among Jewish intellectuals.
They are outsiders by vocation because
they have been able to semantise the condition of
the Wanderer, to which the Jewish people have
been subjected since ancient times. Necessity creates
the context: this is why the Jews have an infinite
capacity for changing. Mobility has necessarily
become heritage of the Jewish spirit. The Jew thus
becomes the ‘destroyer of limits’: he does not set
them to himself, he does not to things, moving according
to a specific Freigeist. At the beginning of
the twentieth century, the free spirit of the Jewish
thinker explores modernity in its most subversive
forms, from sociology to music, from physics to
psychoanalysis. Languages change drastically. An
example: Freud uses the word Muttererde and not
Vaterland to describe a non-physical, but internal
belonging. “The Jew is an individual, but not an
individuality; devoted all to the interior life, he does
not feel the need for the continuation of his own
existence, he lacks to be true, immutable, and metaphysical,
he has no part in the eternal superior life.”
We will try to verify how the components of this
inner life have strongly influenced the development
of twentieth-century architectural thought.

"Paola Ardizzola’s contribution, which focuses on the house that Bruno Taut built for himself in the late 1930s, demonstrates how personal tribulations can affect architectural belief, and lead to novel architectural expressions. In such cases, the own home offers a very fertile testing ground. After having fled Germany in 1933, Taut first moved to Japan and then Turkey, where he built a house for himself in Istanbul in 1938. Taut’s thinking on architecture was affected by this journey, as well as by the socio-political shifts that necessitated it – he was persecuted by the Nazis. Ledigenheim, Junggesellenhaus  (or  generically  Arbeiterheim), Einküchenhaus,  Boarding  house  are  some  of  the  labels  to  designate  the  various  forms  of  habitats  with  collective  services  common  to  Germany. The technical, specialised level of the question is overlaid by a more aesthetic layer without creating a contrast, as discussed by authors such as Karl Scheffler who constitute an often overlooked precedent of the more famous reflections on the subject by masters like Gropius, Taut and Scharoun.

In 1977, your writer attended a two-month international technical training program organised by Carl Duisberg GMBH in West Berlin with a United Nations scholarship. I flew Ankara Istanbul, Munich by THY. Then I waited for ten hours in Munich airport for the Berlin PanAm plane. I arrived at Berlin Tegel airport in the middle of the night. Today Tegel airport is closed. The newly built Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt international airport is opened, other airports are closed. The nearby Schoenefeld airport has been added to the Brandenburg airport. Mechanical engineers at my age from all over the world came to the program. We were studying industrial engineering. They gave numerous lecture notes compiled from technical handbooks. We were staying in the institution building at the center of Berlin, having three meals in the same place and taking lessons in the same place.

Architect, art critic and curator Thibaut de Ruyter has witnessed these transformations firsthand and shares his impressions (originally published in French in 2019) of what has changed in the reunified German capital.

Die Ausstellung ist Ergebnis eines Kooperationsprojektes des Kunstgeschichtlichen Seminars der Universität Hamburg, der Forschungsstelle Naturbilder/Images of Nature, der Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Hamburg (SUB) sowie der Kunstsammlung der Universität Göttingen unter Leitung von Iris Wenderholm und Maurice Saß. Vom 22. Oktober 2017 bis 2. September 2018 wurden mehr als 100 Kupferwerke aus den Hamburger und Göttinger Beständen in der Kunstsammlung der Universität Göttingen gezeigt. In dieser Ausstellung stellte die SUB ihre Bestände zum Thema auch dem Hamburger Publikum vor.

Bei der Arbeit an meiner Schinkel-Biographie fand ich auch die Bibliographie Paul Ortwin Raves von 1935, die Susan M. Peik dankenswerterweise auf die Seite der Friends of Schinkel gestellt hatte, und kopierte sie. Leider ist diese Seite nicht mehr erreichbar (Dead link), so daß diese wichtige Bibliographie dem leichten Zugriff entzogen ist. Ich stelle deshalb meine Kopie der Schinkel-Forschung zur Verfügung. Raves Bibliographie ist aus verschiedenen Gründen äußerst wertvoll, bietet sie doch einen Überblick über die frühe Rezeption Schinkels, gleichsam eine Bibliothek zum Werk Schinkels, die durch keine Recherche nach dem Zugriffsprinzip zu ersetzen ist. Zudem bietet sie u. a. einen bequemen Überblick über die Arbeiten Schinkels, die er bei den Akademieausstellungen zeigte. Nicht zuletzt sind Raves Kommentare wertvolle Instrumente der Forschung. Am Text habe ich nichts geändert oder korrigiert, mit Ausnahme einiger kleiner Fehler, die durch die OCR-Texterkennung entstanden sind, sowie einer Ergänzung bei der Quelle der Bibliographie. Bei Nr. 390 hat Rave irrtümlich Alfred statt Hans Paul v. Wolzogen als Autor angegeben. Die von Rave angekündigten 4 Register lagen leider in der Kopie nicht vor. Christoph von Wolzogen 9. This paper deals with the origins of the Egyptian museums in Germany taking into account the five main tasks of a museum: to collect, to preserve, to carry out research, to display and to share. It therefore describes the historical development of the Egyptian collections from the 16th-century Kunstkammer up to the creation of the Egyptian museums in the 19th century. The study of this historical development is arranged in two phases: The first phase runs from the inception of the Münchner Kunstkammer 1563–1567 until the inauguration of the Dresden Columbarium and Napoleon’s Egyptian expedition; the second phase concerns the formation of the first great Egyptian collections in Gotha, Berlin and Munich in the 19th century .

This text questions to what extent Gunter Demnig's ongoing Stolpersteine project can be seen as a form of silent protest against the cultural and political debates of the late 1980s and 1990s surrounding The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. In particular, the premise that a single centralised memorial could ever express collective memory and identity following decades of national trauma.

Es handelt sich um eine prachtvolle Schale aus Sardonyx oder -wahrscheinlicher -einem künstlich gefärbten Chalcedon 4 , mit einer lebhaften Bänderung in Cremeweiss, Honig-bis Dunkelbraun und Tiefschwarz. Das Kleinod misst 20 cm im Durchmesser und weist einen flachen Boden, eine sehr niedrige, gebauchte Wandung, eine von dieser abgesetzte und deutlich höhere, nach aussen ausschwingende Randzone und einen leicht profilierten Rand auf. Ihren Ruhm verdankt sie vor allem den meisterhaft in den Stein geschnittenen Reliefs auf der Innen-und Aussenseite des Bodens. Das flache Relief auf der Unterseite der Schale zeigt ein Gorgoneion auf einer Ägis. Das streng frontal gestaltete Haupt mit Flügeln im Haar und zwei unter dem Kinn verknoteten Schlangen besitzt ein rundes und volles Gesicht, grosse, weit geöffnete Augen, ein kleines, knubbeliges Kinn, einen kleinen Mund, eine breite Nase, sehr volle und straffe Wangen und eine bewegte Stirnmuskulatur mit stark gewellten Augenbrauen. Die Nase ist durch ein im Mittelalter gebohrtes Loch etwas abgesplittert. Das lange Haupthaar windet und schlängelt sich in alle Richtungen davon, wobei erst auf den zweiten Blick sichtbar wird, dass die stark variierten, fast wie natürlich fliessenden Locken in Wirklichkeit einer subtilen achsensymmetrischen Komposition folgen. Auf der Innenseite der Tazza Farnese sind acht in sehr hohem, teilweise fast halbplastischem Relief geschnittene Figuren in einer Rundkomposition zusammengeschlossen. Ganz unten lagert auf einer Plinthe ein im Profil nach rechts dargestellter, männlicher ägyptischer Sphinx mit menschlichem, bartlosem Kopf, der ein gestreiftes Nemes-Kopftuch mit einer einzelnen Uräusschlange über der Stirn trägt. El presente texto se hace eco de las propias palabras del arquitecto Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969), quien insistía en recordarnos la expresión de Santo Tomás de Aquino "addaequatio intellectus et rei", igualdad entre pensamiento y objeto, como vía para alcanzar la verdad. Valiéndose de un humilde espejo de naturaleza platónica, el autor persigue las ideas arquitectónicas del maestro alemán en sus múltiples reflejos proyectados a lo largo de toda su trayectoria profesional, como si cada vez intentase tallar las facetas poliédricas de un supuesto Templo ideal.

Estableciendo unas hipótesis acerda de un Templo clásico ideal, el trabajo de investigación intenta aproximarse a la obra de Mies van der Rohe mediante un paralelismo entre un Tempo Clásico y el edificio de la 'Neue Nationalgalerie' (1962-68), la última de sus obras en su retorno a la ciudad que le vió empezar a crecer como arquitecto: Berlín.
