Aesthetic Experience

Socially engaged art since the 1990s has become a global trend. The practices of socially engaged arts, while creating new kinds of arts and opening up the entire institutional domain of the art world, are inseparable from the practices of museums that undertake significant changes. In this essay, I theorize the concept of “socially engaged art museum” - a practice that unveils art as an aesthetic force for rendering everyday life performative or playful - to examine both socially engaged arts and museums under what the philosopher Jacques Rancière calls “aesthetic regime of art” (2009). Comparing with the current scholarship that mostly examines European and American examples, I examine cases from Chinese contemporary art. Specifically, I discuss artistic practices of the Yangdeng Art Collective in Southwestern China. My argument is that a socially engaged art museum - qualitatively different from a conventional art museum that engages social life through its curated collections and exhibitions - is both a context-specific artwork of aesthetic experience and a technology of the individualized self in contemporary risk society. Not only does this study question the common scholarly view of socially engaged arts as “post-autonomous” or “anti-aesthetic,” but it also advances a notion of sociality that accounts for the complexity of everyday life.

Kategoria widma Derridy posłużyła Marcowi przede wszystkim do rozważań nad charakterem współczesności i przeobrażeń, jakie dokonały się w obrębie myśli ponowoczesnej. Współczesna kultura, zdaniem Marca, stała się miejscem powstawania widm, nieustannie powracających z przeszłości. Uznając, że nie jesteśmy już w stanie tworzyć utopijnych wizji przyszłości, autor stara się zdać sprawę z widmowego charakteru współczesnej kultury, analizując m. in. strategie vintage, retro, nurt no future w kulturze lat 70. czy nurt fantastyki naukowej w literaturze.

Part I sets out the most essential features of
Husserl’s understanding of aesthetic consciousness, namely, its status as mode of valuing
grounded in the realm of sensory and/or phantasy appearance, which involves the
disinterested appreciation of such appearances. A number of comparisons and contrasts are
made with Kant’s aesthetics (with which Husserl’s has some affinity). We then move on to
discussion of the varieties of aesthetic object that Husserl identifies. Part II addresses those
arising from ‘external perception’ most notably the aesthetic consciousness of nature, and
Part III discusses the aesthetics of phantasy as such, and of the spatial arts, and of the
symbolically presented arts of literature and music. In Part IV, we address the interesting
general significance that Husserl assigns to the aesthetic and beauty, and in Conclusion, we
offer a critical review of his theory overall and a further development of one of its most
interesting points.

The problem of evil is not only a logical problem about God’s goodness but also an existential problem about the sense of God’s presence, which the Biblical book of Job conceives as a problem of aesthetic experience. Thus, just as theism can be grounded in religious experience, atheism can be grounded in experience of evil. This phenomenon is illustrated by two contrasting literary descriptions of aesthetic experience by Jean-Paul Sartre and Annie Dillard. I illuminate both of these literary texts with a discussion of the 18th Century philosopher Lord Shaftesbury’s concept of ‘enthusiasm’.

Abstract:

Soviet socialism was based on paradoxes that were revealed by the peculiar experience of its collapse. To the people who lived in that system the collapse seemed both completely unexpected and completely unsurprising. At the moment of collapse it suddenly became obvious that Soviet life had always seemed simultaneously eternal and stagnating, vigorous and ailing, bleak and full of promise. Although these characteristics may appear mutually exclusive, in fact they were mutually constitutive. This book explores the paradoxes of Soviet life during the period of "late socialism" (1960s-1980s) through the eyes of the last Soviet generation.

In videogames, classical buildings and objects are usually tarnished and collapsed. This chapter surveys how different styles of videogame from the 1980s to the 21st century depict antiquity. Four versions can be identified: its original freshness, its modern traces, and the moments of its destruction are three. The fourth is that ancient Greece and Rome were already made of ruins. This range reflects the nature of games themselves, as well as the tastes of modern audiences.

In this talk, Picado addresses the problem of pictorial systems underlying representation of historical eventfulness in photojournalism, in the context of debated claims about “indexicality” as hallmark of photographic general meaningfulness. while positioning against vindications of “pure” kinds of indexicality that typifies traditional theories of photography. He also questions the arguing strategies of new theories of photography that are mainly sustained by claims about the “artistic agency” of photographic practices. The depiction of actualities is an issue that requires a pragmatic account of visual meaningfulness, thus dependent on the interactions between images and the “beholder’s share”. In so considering, he analyses photographic depiction by means of the stylistic constraints of straightforwardness in visual presentation and two-dimensional composition, as requirements for the virtual immersive involvement of viewers, and also as operators of a narrative sense of indexicality.

The aim of this paper is to present a process-based ontology of art following John Dewey's concepts of experience and rhythm. I will adopt a pragmatist and embodied point of view within an adverbialist framework. I will defend the idea of an artistic way of experiencing -a subtype of aesthetic experience -as something which allows us to assign the ontological category of art to an object or event. The adverbial features of this artistic way of experiencing will be characterized as being rhythmic in nature. This goal will be achieved in three steps. First, I will explain and elaborate on the concept of adverbialism. Second, the importance of rhythm in experience will be taken into account through a close reading of Dewey's philosophy and by incorporating the nuances of the Pre-Socratic idea of rhuthmos, as well as some recent findings about brain and bodily oscillations from cognitive science. Third, to conclude I will propose four necessary but not sufficient features of the rhythmic engagement enacted while an artistic way of experiencing takes place: a necessary degree of object or event awareness, a positive feedback dynamic, a loosening of the sense of agency, and being attentionally demanding.

Nach einer kurzen Erörterung der Frage, inwieweit Spektakel zur Populärkultur zu zählen seien, wird zentral das Thema der Gewinnung von Wissen bei der Rezeption von Spektakeln behandelt. Ästhetisches Erleben, so die These, ist wesentlich körperliches Erleben, und bezieht sich wesentlich auf körperlich-sinnliches Wissen. Spektakel als Unterhaltungsangebote werden nicht nur kognitiv-rational, sondern gleichermaßen sinnlich-affektiv angeeignet. Vor allem das bezeichnet "aisthesis" als sinnliche Erkenntnis.
Konkreter wird die These mit Intepretationen von Richard Dyer belegt, die die Effekte nicht-sprachlicher, nicht-begrifflicher Dimensionen von Filmen demonstrieren. Farben, Bewegungen, Rhythmen, Räume, Musik und Schauspieler*innen-Images wirken über affektive Codes auf bedeutungsgeladene Stimmungen hin - etwa auf die Erzeugung "utopischer" Energien.

Contemporary art institutions' reluctance to produce virtual exhibitions has been linked to a prevailing skeuomorphic paradigm in the online display of art digitizations. Yet, what has been largely overlooked in museum computing scholarship is the fact that online collection interfaces and in-gallery group shows similarly condition artistic reception owing to a shared database logic, which has resulted in a mediation paradox in contemporary culture. This article examines the effects of this logic on public engagement, and recent digital curatorial strategies that have emerged in response based on notions of the digital aura and networked co-curation. The article concludes by establishing three conditions for an alternative curatorial process capable of adequately mediating art digitizations online without sacrificing aesthetic experience to the limited affordances of screen-based ICTs.

The image is a medium of representation, not only for transferring information, but also for the reproduction of knowledge. Each step of this reproduction process, which can also be considered as a form of design, has an act and meaning in the context of understanding and interacting with the world. The normative position of the architectural image, as a design act, also has a subjective characteristic that enables the audience to empathize with and experience the aesthetic perception of the designer. From this point, the paper focuses on the reproduction of the architectural image through the evolution of the museum and the aesthetic experience within the example of SANAA’s Louvre-Lens Museum. The built example in question indicates a new thinking and presents a new approach for the interrelation of the audience, work of art, and the designed space. As a designed and built architectural image itself, the museum building reproduces a new aesthetic experience, furthermore a new image, with the involvement of new audience.

In his entire oeuvre Brentano defended a scientific conception of philosophy and advocated the adoption of a rigorous, scientific method. Given this background it might come as a surprise that in his reflections on aesthetics he firmly rejected the classic definition of aesthetics as the science of beauty. This must not be read as an expression of disinterest in – or a dismissal of – aesthetics, though. It is rather an expression of Brentano's view concerning the position of aesthetics in his overall system. He conceived it – on a par with logic and ethics – not as a theoretical science, but as a practical discipline that was rooted in psychology: aesthetics, Brentano suggests, is not constituted by a set of intrinsically related propositions; it rather serves the practical purpose of instructing those who want to experience the beautiful with correct taste or to create works of art. The task of aesthetics is, in other words, to formulate a set of rules or instructions that teach us how to correctly experience beauty, how to come to prefer the more over the less beautiful, but also how to create beauty and how to produce works of art that have the power to bring about aesthetic pleasure in the beholder.

Abstract: During the televised broadcast of the rite of voting of the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff, the pre-arrangement of a programmed environment was exposed, in which, due to the audiovisual recording planning, an ontological locus expressions of the national imaginary in that political ceremony. The symbolic systems are considered to make possible inter-subjective relations and the predominance of meanings in the hegemonic constitution of the current visual and discursive order. The ideological instrumentalization of the aesthetic experience is investigated to integrate itself with the institutions of the capitalist current of monopolistic stage of the Brazilian nation-state like category of hierarchy and classification in the project of the power; the aesthetic experience of self-symbolizing social actors, provoked by intentionalities and immanence, fulfills a political role in relation to an ethical-pedagogical horizon through historiographically shared and lived references in contexts, instituting collective memory of the groups and participatory of the formation of brazilian national imaginary symbolically colonized.

Resumo: Durante a transmissão televisionada do rito de votação do impeachment da presidenta Dilma Rousseff, expôs-se a pré-disposição de um ambiente programado, no qual, em função do planejamento de gravação audiovisual, viu-se imperar um locus ontológico como cenário de expressões do imaginário nacional naquela cerimônia política. Considera-se os sistemas simbólicos possibilitando relações inter-subjetivas e a predominância de sentidos na constituição hegemônica da ordem visual e discursiva corrente. Investiga-se a instrumentalização ideológica da experiência estética a integrar-se às instituições da atualidade capitalista de estágio monopolista do Estado-nação brasileiro como categoria de hierarquização e classificação no projeto do poder; a experiência estética auto-simbolizadora dos atores sociais, provocada por intencionalidades e imanências, cumpre papel político em relação a um horizonte ético-pedagógico por intermédio de referências historiograficamente partilhadas e vivenciadas em contextos, instituintes da memória coletiva dos grupos e participativas da formação do imaginário nacional brasileiro simbolicamente colonizado.

Edición crítica del ensayo sobre la belleza publicado por Luis Juan Guerrero en 1954, seguido de las conferencias "Escenas de la vida estética" (1949), "Torso de la vida estética actual" (1949) y "Panorama de la estética clásico-romántica alemana" (1934). El estudio preliminar contextualiza estos trabajos poniéndolos en relación con los desarrollos filosóficos de Estética operatoria en sus tres direcciones (1956, 1967) y discute las tesis del filósofo argentino sobre la autonomía y la funcionalidad del arte en el siglo XX. El volumen se completa con un "Apéndice" con los programas completos de los cursos que Guerrero impartió en la Universidad Nacional de La Plata sobre la génesis y el desarrollo de la estética del romanticismo y del idealismo alemanes en 1933 y 1934.

S’il est vrai que l’expôt est capable de créer, a priori, les conditions d’un espace discursif, l’exposition, elle aussi, peut définir son propre espace, concret, esthétique, sémiotique. L’unicité de l’expôt et de son exposition implique d’être dans un espace et, simultanément, de faire espace. Cela suggère, parfois, l’idée d’une structure immersive, pénétrable, où le spectateur se retrouve enveloppé par un espace esthétique, recréé par l’ « architecture » de l’installation. Mais si, comme il apparait dans certains cas, l’expôt est invisible, alors son exposition se traduit dans la jouissance du lieu d’exposition et dans l’expérience sensorielle du spectateur. Il se produit alors un chevauchement entre oeuvre et espace
qui devient enfin le dispositif (tautologique) de sa mise en monstration. Ainsi, tandis que l’objet se dématérialise, l’espace s’objective. Il s’agit, en ce sens, de s’interroger sur les formes expographiques actuelles, sur le rôle de l’installation dans le processus expérientiel du spectateur et, finalement, sur ce qu’exposer signifie. Pour ce faire, notre intervention étudie trois exemples contemporains qui, en exposant des impulsions invisibles, proposent un terrain de débats autour de ce qu’on peut définir comme « l’invisibilité de l’oeuvre et la matérialité de l’exposition » :
- I Need Some Meaning I Can Memorise (The Invisible Pull), de Ryan Gander, exposée pendant Documenta XIII, à Kassel, en 2012. L’artiste a exposé un courant d’air artificiel au rez-de-chaussée du bâtiment du Fridericianum et, ensuite, dans l’entrée du restaurant de l’édifice.
- Eternit et Imperium, de Luca Vitone, respectivement exposées à la Biennale de Venise (2013) et en une galerie berlinoise (2014). Dans les deux cas, l’artiste a exposé un parfum qui, se répandant dans les espaces d’exposition, a interpellé les spectateurs au sujet de leur expérience perceptive et mémorielle.
- A Conductor, de Rossella Biscotti, réalisée pour Manifesta IX, à Gand, en 2012. L’artiste en récupérant 500 kg de cuivre a construit le système électrique qui a ensuite éclairé l’usine accueillant Manifesta. L’installation de ces oeuvres dans des lieux et des conditions expographiques différentes (manifestations collectives, expositions personnelles, etc.) nous permettra, ainsi, de mettre en lumière l’importance de la nature de l’événement expographique et le rôle des
modalités d’installation d’oeuvres invisibles, dans le processus d’appréhension esthétique du spectateur.

Adornos Praxis des Philosophierens hat ihr Modell an einem Paradigma, das die Erfahrung von Kunstwerken nahe legte. Sie erwächst der kritischen Einsicht in die Insuffizienz herkömmlicher, begrifflicher Identifikation und der daraus folgenden Notwendigkeit neuer Paradigmen diskursiver Theorie. Will Philosophie ihren Erkenntnisanspruch gerecht werden, hat sie zunächst selbstkritisch zu bekennen, dass sie diesen in ihrer konventionellen Form nicht zu erfüllen vermag. Doch zu dieser Selbstkritik zu gelangen, scheint in einem nach Adorno herrschenden, totalen Immanenz- und Verblendungszusammenhang, unmöglich. Kein Standpunkt außerhalb dessen ist zu beziehen, von dem aus solche Kritik zu leisten wäre und Geltung beanspruchen könnte.

    Der Kern ästhetischer Erfahrung besteht jedoch genau darin, dass in ihr die Herrschaft herkömmlicher begrifflicher Praxis gebrochen wird – und das inmitten des Immanenzzusammenhangs. Ist dies aber erst einmal geschehen, ist eben diese diskursive Praxis in ihrem scheinhaften Anspruch, Wirklichkeit in toto fassen zu können, widerlegt. Diese Erfahrung lässt den Begriff sich gegen sich selbst wenden. Paradoxerweise führt jene Inversion auf sich selbst zugleich zu einer Wendung auf seinen Kern: das Nichtbegriffliche. Ist dies aber erst einmal als für den Begriff als konstitutiv erkannt, ‚zergeht‘ nach Adorno der ihn bestimmende „Identitätszwang“ (ND, 24). Damit stellt die Erfahrung von Kunstwerken jenes „Scharnier“ (ebd.) dar, das für eine Neuqualifizierung begrifflicher Bestimmung von Nöten ist.

    „Scharnier“ im eigentlichen Sinne ist der Rätselcharakter der Kunstwerke, denn er ist objektives Signum nicht nur der Insuffizienz des Begriffs, sofern er ein Erfahrungsgeschehen bezeichnet, das zum Kern das Scheitern herkömmlicher, begrifflicher Identifikationsmechanismen hat, sondern auch Signum, das an das vom Begriff Verdrängte und Verstellte erinnert, das seiner Vermittlung harrt. Wie diese Vermittlung zu geschehen hat, auch darauf gibt der Rätselcharakter Antwort, indem er, zu seiner Auflösung auffordernd, auf eine logische Struktur verweist, die genau das darstellt: einen Modus von Vermittlung, der die Sache als sie selbst begreift und begreifbar macht. Dadurch ändert sich nicht nur der Begriff von Vermittlung, sondern auch der Begriff von Bestimmung. Denn eine Sache verstehen und begreifen kann nun nicht mehr bedeuten, sie, indem man sie unter Kategorien bringt, zu beherrschen, sondern sie selbst zur Sprache zu bringen.

    Durch die Reflexion des Rätselcharakters von Kunstwerken wird demnach nicht nur die Herrschaft des Begriffs gebrochen, sondern zugleich auch die Kompetenz des Begriffs rehabilitiert. Denn sie führt zur Einsicht, dass zu einer gelingenden begrifflichen Praxis, das durch jene Begriffsherrschaft verdrängte epistemische Prinzip der Mimesis wieder angeeignet muss. Er erinnert daher nicht nur an das Nichtidentische, das der Begriff durch seine Bindung an das Prinzip der Identität tabuierte oder nivellierte, sondern auch an jenes mimetische Moment, das die epistemische Qualität des Begriffs zu sichern vermag.

Este escrito presenta los principales resultados de la tesis doctoral titulada Experiencia estética en la educación musical interactiva: una mirada desde la escuela (Nasif, 2019), desarrollada en el Doctorado Interinstitucional en Educación de la Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas. La metodología de esta tesis consistió en una etnografía multimodal (audiovisual, sonora, textual, presencial y virtual) y multilocal
ubicada en varios espacios). El objetivo de esta investigación era caracterizar la interactividad y las formas de experiencias estéticas de los estudiantes en cinco experiencias de educación musical que
implementaban plataformas digitales. Para obtener los datos se realizaron observaciones etnográficas participantes y no participantes, con varios instrumentos y herramientas de recolección (diario de campo, guías de observación, entrevistas etnográficas, etc.). Aunque esta investigación se desarrolló entre los años 2018 y 2019, se encontró que sus resultados pueden aplicarse a las condiciones educativas y sociales de cuarentena que se implementaron mundialmente debido a la emergencia sanitaria provocada por la pandemia del COVID-19.

Zusammenfassung: Die jüngsten Erklärungsversuche ästhetischer Erfahrung in den Neurowissenschaften machen unbegründet von einer Gleichsetzung ästhetischer Erfahrung mit Kunsterfahrung Gebrauch, die ich für offensichtlich unzulässig halte. In diesem Artikel spreche ich mich gegen diese Gleichsetzung, die auch in der zeitgenössischen philosophischen Ästhetik dominiert, und damit gegen eine unnötige Einengung des Spektrums genuin ästhetischer Fragen und Phänomene aus. Eine von solchen Voraussetzungen und Vorurteilen befreite Phänomenologie ist dringend erforderlich, um den Neurowissenschaften Forschungs-und Interpretationsansätze anbieten zu können. Umgekehrt können neurowissenschaftliche Beobachtungen und Ergebnisse von der Phänomenologie als Leitfaden und empirische Bestätigung herangezogen werden. Problematisches Ziel ist eine interdisziplinäre Aufklärung, die jenseits und unterhalb der Komplexitätsstufen von Kunst und Schönheit versucht, die unterschiedlichen Momente ästhetischen Erlebens zu differenzieren und verständlich zu machen.

Welche Rolle spielen Wahrnehmung und Erfahrung für unseren Umgang mit Kunst? Gibt es eine spezifisch ästhetische Erfahrung? Und wenn ja, wie lässt sie sich begrifflich bestimmen? Von Antworten auf diese Fragen hängt nicht nur das Schicksal vieler Theorien der Kunst ab, sondern letztlich das Schicksal der Ästhetik selbst, insofern sie mit dem Anspruch auftritt, als Theorie einer besonderen Form der Erfahrung Aufschluss über das Wesen der Kunst zu geben. Der Beitrag stellt theoretische und methodische Ansätze vor, die in der Europäischen Ethnologie / Empirischen Kulturwissenschaft zur Analyse populärkultureller Phänomene verwendet werden. Grundlegend sind ein offenes Verständnis des "Populären" und flexible definitorische Ein- und Abgrenzungen von Populärkultur als Interaktionsphänomen. Ausführlicher wird auf Ansätze der britischen Cultural Studies sowie auf die ästhetische Dimension der Nutzung von Massenkünsten eingegangen.

Juni 2003, Frankfurt am Main, Museum für Moderne Kunst: Im Rahmen der Ausstellung Das Lebendige Museum sind im Obergeschoss mehrere niedrige Podeste aufgebaut, auf denen einige Besucher skurrile Aktionen durchführen oder in absurden Posen erstarrt sind. Auf einem der Podeste steht beispielsweise ein Junge, über dessen Kopf ein schwarzer Eimer gestülpt ist, während seine Füße in einem weißen Eimer stecken. Zur selben Zeit versucht auf einem weiteren Podest eine Frau, leere Plastikflaschen zwischen ihre Arme und ihren Oberkörper sowie zwischen ihre Beine zu klemmen. Ihre Verrenkungen haben bald eine Reihe Schaulustiger angelockt, die ihr amüsiert dabei zusehen, wie sie damit beschäftigt ist, die Flaschen unter Kontrolle zu bringen. Unter-dessen drückt auf einem dritten Podest ein Mann mit der Stirn einen Filzstift an die Wand. Er wirkt konzentriert, und die umliegenden Ereignisse scheinen ihn ebenso wenig zu beeindrucken wie die Personen, die darauf warten, dass er seinen Auftritt bee-ndet und ihnen das Podest überlässt. -Was sich hier abspielt, sind die Realisationen un-terschiedlicher Instruktionen, welche gemeinsam mit den Podesten und den jeweiligen Gegenständen aus der Werkgruppe der One Minute Sculptures von Erwin Wurm stam-men.

Do abstract paintings still make sense and if so what do they mean? By reducing the paintings to simple square blots as by Cézanne, to lines as by van Gogh and color traces as by Monet their meaning is fundamentally questioned. But by interpreting these compositions as effective forces or rather affective stimuli a new and different meaning becomes apparent. Landscapes are no longer introduced but made real in the aesthetic experience. Therefore aesthetics or rather aisthetics (perception) can be defined as a notion of experience and knowledge. Thus the notion of an image gets a new understanding: it can be described as an "energetic system". - / -

Vermitteln abstrakte Bilder überhaupt noch Sinn und wenn ja, welchen? Mit der Reduzierung der Bildanlage auf einfache Flecken bei Cézanne, auf Striche bei van Gogh und schlierende Farbspuren bei Monet steht deren Bedeutung grundlegend infrage. Werden diese dagegen als Wirkungskräfte bzw. Impulskräfte aufgefasst, eröffnet sich sich ein ganz neuer, anderer Sinn. Landschaft wird nicht länger vorgestellt, sondern "realisiert" sich in der ästhetischen Erfahrung. Ästhetik bzw. Aisthetik (Wahrnehmung) erweist sich von daher als Erfahrungs- und Erkenntnisbegriff. Damit lässt sich auch der Begriff des Bildes "neu" greifen: Es lässt sich als ein "energetisches System" beschreiben.

Noël Carroll beginnt einen seiner Aufsätze zur ästhetischen Erfahrung mit der folgenden strategischen Entscheidung: »Da wir annehmen dürfen, dass wir eine Ahnung davon haben, was eine Erfahrung ausmacht, ist die drängende Frage, was unter ›dem Ästhetischen‹ zu verstehen ist.« 1 Ein Blick in die jüngere Literatur zeigt, dass Carroll hier nur ausspricht, was viele stillschweigend zugrunde legen. Nun ist die Annahme sicherlich korrekt: Wir haben eine Ahnung davon, was eine Erfahrung ausmacht. Schließlich beinhaltet unsere Ahnung auch noch ein Verständnis von »Erfahrung«, dem zufolge alle Episoden sinnlichen oder, allgemeiner, phänomenalen Bewusstseins als solche bereits Erfahrungen sind (»phänomenologischer Begriff der Erfahrung«). 3 Ich werde im Folgenden davon ausgehen, dass es sich hier tatsächlich um drei verschiedene Begriffe der Erfahrung handelt, denen drei verschiedene Arten von Erfahrungen korrespondieren. Es stellt sich dann die Frage, welcher oderda eine einzelne mentale Episode wie etwa eine sinnliche Wahrnehmung, dass etwas der Fall ist, unter mehrere dieser Begriffe fallen kannwelche dieser Erfahrungsbegriffe es sind, die wir zur Anwendung bringen, wenn wir von ästhetischen Erfahrungen reden. Die Frage, um die es mir in diesem Aufsatz primär geht, ist also folgende: Welches Verständnis von Erfahrung liegt unserer Rede von ästhetischer Erfahrung zugrunde? Oder: Was kennzeichnet ästhetische Erfahrungen als Erfahrungen? Allerdings werde ich nicht versuchen, diese Frage in ihrer ganzen Breite zu beantworten. In einem ersten Schritt werde ich im ersten Abschnitt das, was ich im Weiteren unter einer ästhetischen Erfahrung verstehe, auf eine handhabbare Größe zurechtstutzen und unter ästhetischen Erfahrungen ausschließlich Erfahrungen ästhetischer Eigenschaften begreifen. Meine Ausgangsfrage lässt sich dann also präzisier so stellen: Welchen Begriff oder welche Begriffe der Erfahrung sollten wir zugrunde legen, wenn wir verstehen wollen, was es heißt, Erfahrungen zu machen, in deren Gehalt ästhetische Eigenschaften auftauchen. Im dritten Abschnitt untersuche ich dann, was wir unter ästhetischer Erfahrung als der Erfahrung von ästhetischen Eigenschaften in diesem Sinn verstehen sollten. Die zentrale These lautet, dass die Erfahrung ästhetischer Eigenschaften so verstanden werden muss, dass sie auf die Erscheinung von Gegenständen Bezug nimmt und insofern Episoden sinnlichen Bewusstseins, also Erfahrungen im »phänomenologischen Sinn« mit einschließt. Ästhetische Erfahrung und die Erfahrung ästhetischer Eigenschaften Wer der Frage nachgeht, was eigentlich ästhetische Erfahrung ist, wird bald feststellen, dass die verschiedenen Bestimmungen, die die Philosophie als Antwort auf diese Frage bereithält, sich nicht zwanglos als Bestimmungen ein und desselben Phänomens verstehen lassen. Bereits phänomenologisch haben die Wahrnehmung der Schönheit des Meeres, die Empfindung der Erhabenheit beim Betreten des Petersdoms oder die Anerkennung des Werts eines Film noir wenig miteinander zu tun. Theorien der ästhetischen Erfahrung variieren hinsichtlich der Fälle, die sie als paradigmatisch ansehen, hinsichtlich der theoretischen Begriffe, die sie zur Erklärung verwenden, hinsichtlich der theoretischen Perspektiven, die sie einnehmen, der Erkenntnisinteressen, die sie verfolgen, und auch noch in beinahe jeder anderen erdenklichen Hinsicht. Ich werde daher versuchen, die Frage nach der ästhetischen Erfahrung dadurch beherrschbar zu machen, dass ich die so vieldeutige und unklare Rede von ästhetischer Erfahrung durch die sehr viel einfachere und erschienen in: Kunst und Erfahrung. Meine Frage lautet dann: Welches Verständnis von Erfahrung müssen wir zugrunde legen, wenn wir die Erfahrung ästhetischer Eigenschaften verstehen wollen. Doch ergibt die Rede von der »Erfahrung ästhetischer Eigenschaften« überhaupt einen Sinn? Kann man überhaupt davon reden, dass »eine Eigenschaft erfahren« wird? Verstößt diese Wendung nicht bereits gegen die Grammatik der Ausdrücke »Erfahrung« und »erfahren«? Wenn wir diesen Anfangsverdacht ausräumen wollen, muss gezeigt werden, dass es verständliche und grammatisch korrekte Wendungen gibt, als deren etwas laxe Abkürzung sich die Redeweise von der Erfahrung von Eigenschaften verstehen lässt. Und solche Wendungen gibt es. Die Rede von der Erfahrung ästhetischer Eigenschaften kann so verstanden werden, dass man eine Erfahrung einer ästhetischen Eigenschaft genau dann macht, wenn man eine Erfahrung macht, die einen bestimmten Gehalt besitzt, und zwar einen Gehalt, der sich vollständig oder teilweise dadurch spezifizieren lässt, dass man sagt, dass ein Gegenstand die fragliche ästhetische Eigenschaft besitzt. Working in the borderlands between art and document, a poetic approach to documentary disrupts commonsense understandings of what documentary can be. However, it is frequently viewed as marginal to the main body of documentary practice for its foregrounding of aesthetic choices around form and materiality. Pushing to the extremes of what is recognisable as documentary, a poetic approach to documentary highlights the rhetorical impact of aesthetic choices within the broader field of practice. Experiential ways of knowing are emphasised so that the work is conceived of as an experience in itself rather than a replication of reality. Moving beyond realist representations of evidence, a poetic approach can make use of techniques of defamiliarisation as a strategy to renew perception and enable a reimagining of preconceived connections. In diverging from established pathways unexpected combinations can occur, allowing complex and changeful conceptions to emerge. Utilising a methodology of practice based research to produce a 28 minute single channel documentary and the close examination of pertinent creative works, this thesis argues that a critically engaged poetic approach to documentary can work to encourage thoughtful contemplation as part of an ongoing conversation in the process of knowing.

How to read a text and how to hear a text. How to open words and syllables so that knowledge arises within your own body, within your inner awareness. When you are located in mind alone, when you are located in conceptualness and concrete mind alone, you will be locked in and contained. William Reich described concrete minds as living machines. Concreteness can be described as rigidity, a mode of tense cognitive activity. Strangely enough, concreteness with its compulsiveness, its drivenness can distort the sense of presence and the sense of reality. The concrete mind in its literalness struggles to find the right solution. The literal view can be narrow, highly vigilant and stimulus−stimulation bound. The concrete mind struggles to find the right solution relentlessly. Of course whatever the solution, it never is enough. One becomes stuck in the stimulus of the word and stuck in the signification of the word. The nexus between the signifier and signified is without space and is densely bound.

The aim of this paper is to explore the potential of aesthetic experience for perspective-changing. According to the thesis presented here, it is the aesthetic experience, which as "aesthetic" implies the change of perspective, the reversal or alteration of accustomed, possibly false viewpoints and the pointing out of new ways of seeing tithe world. A decisive difference to our other practices, in which we (must) also engage with other perspectives, is that the aesthetic experience plays with perspectives, in which we as recipients and, in a certain sense, participants are epistemically and morally released. The medium film is discussed as a paradigmatic medium of such aesthetic change of perspective.

Welche Rolle spielen Wahrnehmung und Erfahrung für unseren Umgang mit Kunst? Gibt es eine spezifisch ästhetische Erfahrung? Und wenn ja, wie lässt sie sich begrifflich bestimmen? Von Antworten auf diese Fragen hängt nicht nur das Schicksal vieler Theorien der Kunst ab, sondern letztlich das Schicksal der Ästhetik selbst, insofern sie mit dem Anspruch auftritt, als Theorie einer besonderen Form der Erfahrung Aufschluss über das Wesen der Kunst zu geben. Der Band versammelt prominente Autoren sowohl der »kontinentalen« als auch der »analytischen« Ästhetik, die den Zusammenhang von Kunst und Erfahrung aus systematischer Perspektive beleuchten, darunter Georg W. Bertram, Noël Carroll, Jerrold Levinson, Martin Seel, Eva Schürmann und James Shelley.

Our lack of awareness of Being results in bewildering experience. The intrinsic inner radiance, the inner light of Being arises out of primordial luminous spaciousness, the unbound openness of unbound pure potentiality. When this primordial ground of Being is veiled and obscured by the lack of experiential awareness, we can be locked into dualistic experiences, and consequently the non-dual nature of the field of Being is experientially foreclosed. The sense of indivisibility of all phenomena and awareness is experientially foreclosed. The capacity to see into, feel into and see through the lucidity of phenomena as the very field of Being becomes foreclosed and densified. We then live contained in mind alone. There is no experience of the field of Being. Without the field of Being we easily become things and objects both to our self and to others.

Fairbairn's theory of aesthetic experience is presented in relation to a comment by Herbert Read on its usefulness to the study of art, from a letter Read wrote to Fairbairn in 1939. It is argued that Fairbairn's psychology of dynamic structure combines the restitution of the mother that is characteristic of Kleinian theories of art and the restitution of the self that is characteristic of Winnicottian theories of art. Contemporary examples of Young British Artists discussing how they make art appear to share an understanding of the process of art making that is consistent with Fairbairn's theory. The processes of psychic growth within Fairbairn as described by John Padel are equated with a general theory of creativity. It is suggested that this theory can help us to understand key moments of creativity within specific artist's lives by reference to important changes in object relationships during key periods in three artists lives.

Enhancing creativity, through design, to meet socio-cultural and ecological challenges are critical issues worldwide. However, creativity is perceived and addressed differently from one person, policy and population, to another. This study is situated in the emerging field of transition design and will explore creativity through a lens of both power and powerlessness. It opens up the discourse to designer experience, and more specifically aesthetic experience, as a way for change. Most importantly, through making the invisible visible, the research aims to offer new insights into the paradigmatic potential of creativity as a choice, caring enough to go beyond, for sustainable social change alongside conceptual shifts of entire lifestyles. Exploring the pervasiveness of design in the globalised world is explored through this study of creativity as a socio-cultural phenomenon. Thus moving the enquiry beyond the parameters of professional design and norms within design theories to a dynamic approach to modes of togetherness and relationality. This research will explore a spatial variation of Bali as an immersive case study; an external reference point for understanding creativity through design's relationality with development.
