Acoustic Guitar

The acoustic guitar and its predecessors in the Baroque and Classical period have proven a popular instrument for performance, composition and general entertainment and for many centuries hence. The popularity has increased exponentially in popular culture since then introduction of the guitar in Blues Music of Deep South America in the beginning of the twentieth-century and furthered through the 1950’s Rock and Roll movement and is now often viewed as a synonym of Popular music.
However, as will be demonstrated it is not merely an instrument for accompaniment or purely jovial entertainment: a wide range of Western art music composers and composer-guitarists have paved the way for a whole new range of performance techniques for the instrument.

RESUMO

O objetivo deste trabalho é assimilar o violão tocado por João Gilberto e Toninho Horta ao acompanhar. Para isso foi utilizado duas gravações da música “Só Danço Samba” (Antônio Carlos Jobim e Vinícius de Moraes): a de Getz/Gilberto (1964) de João Gilberto e Stan Getz e Sem Você (1995) de Toninho Horta e Joyce. Fizemos um paralelo entre os dois fonogramas e o violão de ambos, analisando aspectos rítmicos, harmônicos e técnico-musicais e observando tanto peculiaridades quando dessemelhanças entre os violonistas, além de também comparar as versões citadas com a versão original de Tom Jobim, do álbum The Composer of Desafinado Plays (1963).

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this work is to assimilate the acoustic guitar played by João Gilberto and Toninho Horta when accompanying. For this it was used two recordings of the song “Só Danço Samba” (Antônio Carlos Jobim e Vinícius de Moraes): Getz/Gilberto (1964) of João Gilberto e Stan Getz and Sem Você (1995) of Toninho Horta and Joyce. We made a parallel between the phonograms and the guitar lines, analyzing rhythmic, harmonic and technical-musical aspects and observing both peculiarities and dissimilarities between the guitarists, and also compare the versions cited with the original version by Tom Jobim of album The Composer of Desafinado Plays (1963).

The goal is to contribute information useful to other researchers of the history of Brazilian guitar and performance. While the story of the Brazilian guitar has been studied in several aspects, there continue to be gaps in the historical record. This is especially the case surrounding such composers whose works have not yet been re-evaluated or been the subject of in-depth study, such as the case of Rogério Guimarães. Introdução A história do violão brasileiro vem sendo reconstruída aos poucos, principalmente através de pesquisas acadêmicas e publicações de livros-muitos deles decorrentes dessas mesmas investigações. Da mesma maneira, o corpus de material escrito, iconográfico ou de áudio, vem sendo também disponibilizado através da abertura de alguns arquivos como o de Ronoel Simões 1 (1919-2010) ou de particulares (como o de Abel Carlevaro [1916-2001], que teve influência na didática do violão brasileiro desde a década de 1970). Durante a fase de construção do nosso projeto investigativo foram notadas recorrentes citações-tanto nas pesquisas sobre a historiografia do violão brasileiro quanto em periódicos e recortes de jornais-que tratavam da importância de Rogério Guimarães para o violão a partir da segunda metade da década de 1920, período que compreende o aumento de gravações de obras de violão "solo" (ou em duo de violões ou mesmo pequenos conjuntos) no cenário fonográfico, como as obras de Mozart Bicalho 2 , Levino Rogério Guimarães: Contributions to musicology of the guitar Resumo: Esse artigo é parte de uma pesquisa de mestrado iniciada em 2019 e propõe-se a um aporte para a reavaliação da obra para violão de Rogerio Guimarães, com o intuito de contribuir com informações que poderão ser utilizadas por outros pesquisadores para incremento de investigações sobre a história do violão popular instrumental brasileiro. A trajetória do violão brasileiro tem sido estudada em diversos aspectos através dos programas de pós-graduação e pesquisas das universidades. No entanto, existem lacunas a serem preenchidas no que se refere a personalidades isoladas, que mesmo com seus nomes recorrentemente citados nas produções historiográficas, não obtiveram suas obras reavaliadas e estudadas como foco principal, como é o caso de Rogério Guimarães.

This article introduces The Immersive Guitar (TIG) Project, a proposed sonic performance installation that doubles as an intimate acoustic venue. The TIG Project responds to several needs, highlighting relations between place and performance, music and architecture. The needs concern a rarity of suitable, intimate spaces for acoustic performance and an appeal for more creative solutions in the provision of such spaces, which would afford novel ways of accessing performing arts experiences. This article introduces the proposition and provides project background and rationale.

O múltiplo leque estético de Lica A multiartista paulistana Lica Cecato, filha de um saxofonista da ecumênica orquestra do maestro Enrico Simonetti e neta de maestro, é avessa a fronteiras geográficas e estéticas. Trafegando entre as artes plásticas, poesia e música, ela gravou discos, participou de exposições e apresentou-se em palcos de países tão diversos quanto Japão, Itália, Alemanha, Tailandia, Austrália, Portugal e obviamente, Brasil. Atualmente radicada em Veneza, na Itália, ela lança um novo álbum, "Duo cometi", com o violonista e compositor italiano Stefano Scutari, seu parceiro da estréia fonográfica, em "Our favorite songs", de 1992. Com exceção de uma das faixas, "Lontan", música dela e letra em dialeto veneziano de Scutari, Lica encarregou-se da parte poética e o parceiro das músicas. O roteiro, com orquestrações minimalistas e leve perfume percussivo, singra da compassada "Bossa waltz" ("o dia amanheceu/ nenhuma nuvem lá no céu/ o azul me transbordou/ e eu escrevi a canção na beira do papel") à inesperada "Nossa milonga brasileira", onde o estilo sulista, encordoado com sabedoria pelo violonista, destila desventuras ("eu não queria refazer minha lembrança/ um tijolo atrás do outro/ uma casa a ruir"). Ao norte, entre sincopas abaionadas, desponta "É pro Rio Amazonas", onde a suntuosa voz da solista debulha aliterações regionais: "É conversa ribeira, é tucupi, tacacá/ é cantiga de roda, tapioca, açaí/ pirarucu, surubim, jacaré, tambaqui/ todo índio, o caboclo e essa gente/ que é bonita que só". O violão também poliglota de Stefano ainda transporta a cantora poeta por lirismos envolventes e sortidos, do jazzificado "Amor de elevador" ao convidativo "Namorar" e o epitelial "John & Yoko", única faixa em inglês ("all that's writen can't express/ the love I feel for you"). "Como num cinema" idealiza, no rastro de Lennon, "o mundo sem fronteiras/ ninguém mais é estrangeiro". Com leve gingado melódico bossa nova, a faixa título, em italiano, "Duo comete", resigna-se com o desenlace ("siamo stati buoni amanti/ mas comme le comete, ci allontanaiamo"). Num embalo levemente felliniano, "Gioia, la mia nave" sela, num valseio leve, o determinismo da condição humana: "Senza sognar/ non si può camminar". (Tárik de Souza)

The Immersive Guitar Project responds to several needs that have been identified by Lancaster et al. (2009) highlighting relations between place and performance. These needs concern a rarity of suitable, intimate spaces for acoustic performance in Australia, and an appeal for more creative solutions in the provision of such spaces which would afford novel ways of accessing performing arts experiences. The project extends innovations in performance space design commenced by Le Corbusier and Xenakis in the twentieth century wherein instrument design as well as inventive approaches to musical composition inform the built outcome. Lutz (2007) notes the richness of variation amongst the inspirations and discoveries that have come out of this connection between music and architecture. According to the publications and the research conducted by Hugh Tracey, Gerhard Kubik, John Low and Andrew L. Kaye, acoustic guitar music gradually spread across Central Africa after World War II: initially in several multi-ethnic urban centers and in mining centers, such as the Zambian Copperbelt area, and a few years later even in remote villages. Finger-style is a popular guitar technique commonly used by guitarist in Central Africa and it consist in playing the strings of the instrument using exclusively the thumb and the index finger of the right hand. The combination of the two fingers creates a very structured motional pattern, which produces a continuous interlocking game between bass and treble parts.
Christopher Gerald (1981-2019) belonged to a third generation of finger-style guitar song composers active since the end of the World War II in the Chileka Area (Malawi). He was the disciple of the deceased multi-instrumentalist Donald Kachamba (1953-2001), brother of Daniel Kachamba (1947-1987), founder of the legendary Kachamba Brothers Band. Gerald’s first instrument was a home-made banjo, then he started playing the guitar using finger-style technique. In this paper, I will investigate his musical career both as guitar song composer and lyricist of the Donald Kachamba’s Kwela Heritage Jazz Band. Furthermore, I will analyse two Gerald’s guitar songs (Usadandaule and Ndingayende): his own individual guitar style and the compositional ideas will be highlighted thanks to the musical transcriptions.
