Academic library

This study aims to explore the provision of web-based sources and services through the websites of university libraries in India. The present study adopted a content analysis method for examining various web-based library services and web-based sources provided through the university library websites with a checklist. A total of 50 top-ranked Indian universities were listed from the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking list for the year 2020 in the category university. From these universities to be included as a sample for the present study; each university must have an independent library website. Secondly, the university library should be offering web-based library services and resources through the library website. Based on these criteria, 42 library websites were shortlisted as a sample for this study. The study found that majority of the libraries were offering traditional library services such as referral service, and library catalogue in a web-based environment more extensively compared to innovative and modern present-day services like library application (App), Instant Messaging (IM), and virtual library tours. Moreover, libraries are yet to explore the full potential of social media services and web 2.0 tools. A majority of the library websites were lagging in the provision of these services. It is suggested that libraries should make efforts to provide social media services extensively as the current generation are the predominant users of social media; hence it is evident on the libraries' part to make efforts to reach out to a wide population of their library users. This research is the first study of its kind highlighting the significance of university library websites in the provision of web-based services and sources for sustainability, and exploring the role of academic libraries in the promotion of sustainable development by processes like collection development on sustainable development themes, developing information literacy skills, spreading awareness, and organizing events on sustainable development and related areas.

The presence on Web 2.0 has significantly changed the role of the library and the way librarians interact with their users. Depending on the needs of the library, different Web 2.0 applications are used for different purposes and definitely will bring different impact on the users. For instance, streaming media such as YouTube has been the most popular video-sharing application that allows users to post personally developed videos/recordings or video tutorials to train users how to use library resources and access various services in their library. Whereas, social media such as Facebook is commonly used to interact with users, sharing library news or events, sharing pictures as well as marketing library services. This paper examines the implementation of Web 2.0 applications on academic library websites from Southeast Asia which offer LIS (Library and Information Science) program. Seventy three academic library websites were sampled and analyzed by using a web analysis. It is also discussed on how the libraries can collaborate by applying Web 2.0 on their websites. The findings revealed that the order of popularity of Web 2.0 applications implemented on the websites are Facebook, Twitter, RSS and Messenger. Applications less widely used is a Wiki. In summary, the application of Web 2.0 is still not widely used or not even provided in some academic libraries in Southeast Asia which offer LIS program.

Web 2.0, the read/write social web, has become ubiquitous in most academic libraries, even in developing countries. The use of Web 2.0 tools is increasingly changing the way academic library users seek, access, use, or share information. Thus, the use of Web 2.0 has the potential of impacting the efficiency and effectiveness of service design and delivery in academic libraries the world over. This study explored the impact of Web 2.0 on the effectiveness of service delivery in academic libraries in Kenya. Data for the study were collected through an analytical survey of the web platforms of nine academic libraries in Kenya. The libraries were selected through information-oriented purposive sampling. Additional data were obtained from key informant interviews with librarians and users in two academic libraries also purposively selected from the nine. Secondary data were also collected through documentary analysis of relevant literature. The findings of the study reveal that the use of Web 2.0 tools in academic libraries in Kenya has increased the users' interests in the library resources and services; promoted learning; as well as enriched library promotion and marketing programmes. The findings also revealed that the effective use of Web 2.0 tools in academic libraries in Kenya is hampered by infrastructural, technical, technological and cultural challenges, among other factors, which require urgent attention to enhance their impact. The findings of this study can be used to justify investments in Web 2.0 platforms by academic libraries. They can also be used by library schools to develop curricula which empower librarians to make optimal use of Web 2.0 and similar tools.

This study examines the need for metaverse technology in libraries and the importance of meta-literacy for librarians and library users in the digital era. The research, using a descriptive survey approach, targeted 8,200 librarians in Nigeria, excluding school librarians, and collected data through questionnaires. The study aimed to explore librarians' views on the benefits of metaverse in libraries, the need for meta-literacy, and potential challenges. Results showed that librarians recognized the potential of the metaverse to enhance library services but emphasized that both librarians and users must be meta-literate to effectively interact with digital information. Challenges included inadequate technological infrastructure and access to necessary equipment. The study recommends regular training for librarians and users, including workshops and online courses, to enhance meta-literacy skills and support the adoption of metaverse technology in Nigerian libraries.

This paper is concerned with how two design processes that are seemingly very similar, human-computer interaction design and design thinking, affect innovation in the context of an academic library. Twenty different multidisciplinary projects involving advanced students of interaction design, researchers and library employees, using either of these two approaches or their combination, were conducted during the past four years. We chose two projects that we consider as illustrative of overall findings, in particular, regarding outcomes for diverse stakeholders. Both projects were focusing on the same problem, which many academic (and public) libraries face, of accessing library's e-book collections and making doing so more enjoyable.

While Embracing Change achieves its goal in exploring alternatives to research writing assignments, the book's brief introduction fails to introduce the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy, which many chapters reference. Given the applicability of Framework outside the scope of libraries (such as inquiry or research writing faculty, curricula support staff, or really any academic staff without an MLIS), it could have been a helpful gloss in the introduction. Furthermore, given the brevity of the introduction, the editors missed an opportunity to ground their book and its contributions within the relevant discourse of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. But these are relatively minor concerns. Overall, readers of this text will gain an understanding of actionable ideas to inspire their own methodologies for modern information literacy instruction.

This paper attempts a conceptual analysis of relationship between marketing as a strategy, and academic library as an information service provision centre. Marketing has a wider and deeper implication as it is applicable to not only profit making ventures but also not -for -profit social service oriented institutions such as libraries. The main concern or goal of libraries is user satisfaction of their products and services which marketing helps to advance. The paper, therefore, critically views the adoption of marketing techniques as a necessity to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of academic library services by offering products which would be wanted and valued by users so as to attract more and more users. With this, the public image of the academic library as an intellectual centre is likely to be boosted. All the attendant benefits of marketing in library operation especially on cost recovery and revenue generation for academic libraries are explored.

Supply chain management has been widely used in manufacturing industries and proven by researchers and practitioners as a best practice. It can satisfy stakeholders, increase revenues, and decrease the total costs. However, very few service industries, particularly the academic library, have implemented supply chain management. Several problems related to the academic library supply chain should be addressed, such as how to model the entities and their functions for the general practice of an academic library supply chain, and the linkage among these entities as an integrated model. This research develops an integrated academic library supply chain model, which can be used for the strategic planning of the academic library. It identifies entities and their functions for the academic library supply chain, constructs a conceptual model of the integrated supply chain of the academic library, and analyzes the interrelationship among the newly developed model entities. This research used both qualitative and quantitative approaches to achieve the research objectives. The process of identifying the entities and their functions of the academic library supply chain was accomplished by using a theoretical literature review and content analysis techniques. The proposed conceptual supply chain model was developed based on the system thinking method. Eventually, it was validated through the Fuzzy Delphi method, an expert judgment technique. Three conceptual models for the supply chain academic library were successfully developed: The Holistic View of Supply Chain Model for Academic Library, the Material Purchasing Decision Making Model, and the Integrated Academic Library Supply Chain Model. These three models were validated by the academic librarians. This research expands the knowledge of supply
chain theory, particularly in the supply chain academic library. It also contributes to the academic library management in planning and formulating a roadmap for the library to increase its quality services for all stakeholders.

It is dependent upon colleagues and other service areas across the University for many aspects of its service provision. The Project Team suggest that by continuing to work collaboratively across the University and by implementing the recommendations identified above, LLR will be able to promote an inclusive approach to supporting students and will empower its staff to recognise, respond to, sustain and celebrate the diverse learning communities of the University of the Arts London.

Digitization as a method of preservation is now a global phenomenon as well as the new trend in managing a library collection especially precious ones among academic libraries. This paper discusses the reasons for digitization and also explains the processes and methodology of digitization. Issues and challenges involved in the process of digitization are also highlighted. Such major deterrents in the project include legal aspect and finances. Other factors are also discussed and the ways forward to the hindrances highlighted. This paper establishes that there are challenges militating against the digitization of academic libraries and concludes with the remarks that although digitization is a challenge still information professionals/librarians must meet with the practical skills and the vision to implement it in a controlled and manageable fashion. 

Assessment of the services, efficiency, and quality of academic libraries is increasingly shifting from input-output oriented to outcome-based approaches. Outcome-based assessment is a useful way to measure and prove the value of library services and operations to students, teaching staff, university administrations, and accreditation bodies. Recent studies have focused on the methodologies and tools for and the impacts of outcome-based assessment in academic libraries. This paper contributes by reporting a real case study on the impacts of a newly implemented outcome-based assessment process in an academic library. Its findings offer useful tips and "takeaways" for library assessment processes, and should guide other libraries on how to approach assessment consistently with their aims and to resolve related problems.

This study was based on a Master's dissertation which investigated the academic staff expectations of undergraduate students with respect to library use at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg (UKZNP) campus. The specific objectives of the study were to determine whether academic staff encourage students to use the library, to determine the reason(s) for doing or not doing so and to determine the format(s) or way(s) in which this is done. The survey research method was used and the data was collected through a self-administered questionnaire. All 131 academic staff of the Faculty of Human and Management Sciences were surveyed. Seventy one academic staff responded yielding a response rate of 55%. Most (86%) academic staff expected and encouraged students to use the library at an undergraduate level. The most used "method" of doing so was verbally. Conclusions in line with the findings and research objectives were made and these were followed by recommendations which included that greater effort could be made by lecturers in referring and/or encouraging students to use the library.

The present study is based on the 8223 citations appended in the 26 doctoral theses of Philosophy submitted to Panjab University, Chandigarh, for the award of doctoral degree during 2002-2012. The main purpose of this study was to investigate authorship pattern of the citations, type and form of literature cited, and to compile a ranked list of journals in Philosophy. The study revealed that books were the most preferred sources of information used by the researchers in the field of Philosophy accounting for 40.67% of total citations, followed by journals with 17.99% citations. Badford's law of scattering was used to identify the core journals in the field of Philosophy.

Librarians play a crucial role in the constantly evolving discipline of information management, serving as curators of knowledge. Librarians are not only responsible for organizing books and learning resources but they provide services to library users by serving as reference experts through their advanced bibliographic knowledge. This study aimed to determine the influence of solo librarians' skills and digital resource quality on the satisfaction of library users. The participants of the study were college students from selected higher education institutions in Misamis Oriental. The descriptivecorrelational method was employed and modified survey instruments were used for data gathering. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and regression. Findings revealed that librarians' skills and digital resource quality significantly influenced library users' satisfaction. Participants rated the librarians' skills as high in their communication, customer service, interpersonal, managing information services, and organization of library materials. It also revealed that librarian treats everyone with honesty, respect, and fairness got the highest satisfaction among the given indicators. Participants of the study also had high satisfaction with digital resource quality. This study reveals that the participants' assessment on solo librarians' skills and digital resource quality have significantly influenced their satisfaction. The study shows that librarians have a crucial role in providing information that contribute to library users' satisfaction. The study recommends that the school administrators continue honing the librarian skills through optimizing and expanding digital services and enhance their digital skills. Librarians are also encouraged to enhances user experience through personalized service and user feedback.

This paper examines the use and perception of Web 2.0 technologies for research collaborations in public universities in Egypt. Existing research has focused mainly on Web 2.0 applications in developed countries; this study provides a case study of a developing country. Existing research examines Web 2.0 applications in teaching, while this study focuses on faculty research collaborations. The methods used were descriptive statistics and a statistical analysis of survey sample of researchers in public higher education institutions in Egypt in 2012. The survey results revealed that the dominant channels for research collaborations among faculty were still Web 1.0 technologies, but Web 2.0 applications are becoming more prominent. The statistical analysis revealed that demographic and institutional factors made a difference in the use of Web 2.0 among faculty.

Purpose: This research investigated the Internet Search Engine use behaviour of lecturers in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Jos. Design/Methodology/Approach: The study adopted the survey research design. The entire population of 133 academic staff members in the Faculty was adopted for the research. Descriptive survey was the research method used for the study. The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts and percentages were used to analyze the data. Findings: The findings revealed among others that Google was the most popular search engine amongst the lecturers. However, the academics admitted that they learned how to use the search engines through seminars and workshops organized by the University management. The findings further revealed that only few of the lecturers were aware of the Advanced and Boolean Search Options provided by the engines, the lecturers also indicated that coping with too much information hits was their major problem in using the search engines. Implication: More sensitization is needed for the lecturers. Originality/Value: The University Management through the Directorate of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Unit in association with the University Library should continue to organize workshops and seminars for the lecturers on how to use the various search engines to effectively access information in the internet.

Studying ADA accessibility at library websites of top universities selected from the U.S. News and World Report, the authors used WAVE and AChecker to assess data in compliance with WCAG 2.0 standards. Almost 8 out of 10 public university academic libraries reported accessibility errors as one of the major findings. Low color contrast was becoming a more commonly occurring accessibility issue, making it difficult for people with vision impairments to perceive the color of the image. The outcomes of the study suggest that academic libraries around the world should continue improving their website accessibility.

A manda Clay Powers (ACP), Martin Garnar (MG), and Dustin Fife (DF) are all relatively new library deans or directors. This series is their attempt to discuss the process of moving to a new library and becoming more than just a new manager, but truly a leader. This will be broken into three parts, looking mostly at their first year. The first article will focus on how Powers, Garnar, and Fife ended up where they are now. It will talk about the process of applying for the job, being interviewed, and interviewing their prospective employers at the same time. The second part will focus on getting started, working with a new team, and adjusting to a new institution. The third part will be the most introspective. The authors will discuss obstacles, mistakes, failures, and successes. They believe this open and honest conversation is essential to help prepare future library deans, directors, and leaders. DF: I just finished my first year as an academic library director, and I am starting to think about what has gone well and what I would really rather not talk about, but probably should. Luckily, Martin and Amanda have been going through the same process, and I am excited to discuss these new adventures together. Two questions come to my mind. Purpose – The purpose of this study is to identify the nature and extent of the “information gap” in Iraq and explore perspectives on international academic library collaboration using social media that may assist in reducing this gap. The study investigates the information gap in Iraq in the context of the country ' s recent history of political and social upheaval. Design/methodology/approach – The study uses qualitative data collected through interviews with academic library managers, librarians and researchers in both Australia and Iraq. Findings – The findings demonstrate that currently academic librarians in Iraq and Australia use social media differently. The degradation of critical research infrastructure and reliable communication means that Iraqi librarians rely heavily on informal communication channels. This study was conducted to assess the traditional and emerging roles of university libraries in Nigeria. Census sampling technique was used to sample all the 43 Nigerian Federal university libraries. Structured questionnaire was adopted for data collection. Data were analysed using frequency count and mean scores. Results indicated that the traditional roles were rooted in acquisition and preservation of information and in the provision of access to information in various formats. The respondents agreed with only 7 of the possible 18 emerging roles of libraries indicating that the understudied libraries are slow in attuning to the internet, World Wide Web and ICT. Respondents agreed with 11 out 15 possible challenges militating against the adoption of emerging roles of academic libraries in information service delivery. In National Taiwan University (NTU), the Library aims to provide data curation services for university researchers from different research fields, particularly focusing on those from small sciences. In this paper, we will first investigate existing metadata schemas used for data curation services in North America and Europe. Next, we will attempt to develop an application profile, proposing metadata fields to be applied to data curation services in NTU. Finally, we will discuss our findings in this study, and take further action to develop a repository platform.

Esta situación ha llevado a estas bibliotecas a interesarse por conocer el grado de satisfacción que muestran los usuarios con los servicios. A petición de varias Bibliotecas Universitarias nuestro grupo de investigación (SECABA) ha realizado estudios de satisfacción de usuarios de dichas bibliotecas. En el presente trabajo queremos ofrecer algunos de los resultados y conclusiones que hemos obtenido. Estos son muy útiles para la toma de decisiones, permiten hacer benchmarking, son una herramienta adecuada para la retroalimentación de la biblioteca, y localizan las buenas prácticas.

All work is processed in an organization: the things you require to perform your tasks, the tasks that you perform to add value to inputs that you've received, and your work that meets your customers' requirements. Some organizations no longer use the word "customer." At Minnesota they say "those we serve." It sounds like a police force. But don't get hung up in the language what we're missing. In all situations we need the supplier, we need ourselves, and we need the customer downstream. If we can begin to bring those people together, then we can start talking about alignment and synergy and moving an institution forward. So don't get hung up on the idea that the customer is always right. It's not true, but OFFICE OF MANAGEMENT SERVICES 7 it's not a big deal, either. The customer is very important but our role as customer and supplier is really neat. Breaking down the barriers, as Deming would say. Second, more than 90 percent of all problems in an institution are within the administration's power to correct. Ninety percent. How many think that's true? How many false? We've got sort of an even split here. Who wants to defend the true side? Why is that true? MS. ELBAZY: I believe it's true because quality is not everybody's job as all of those slogans have been saying. I think quality comes from the administration. I think the top administration does nothing to support the process and the quality improvement process will not work. MR. SEYMOUR: She's saying that it's management's job to enforce the quality process, and that the individuals can't do it bv themselves. Who thinks this is false? Yes? AUDIENCE: In educational institutions the individuals are hired because of their expertise. MR. SEYMOUR: Yes.

This paper aims to awaken academic librarians to the stress management techniques needful in escaping stress emanating from current trends in academic librarianship. The study is based on literature review, documentary analyses, commentary and casual observation of academic librarians in Nigeria. The study found out that academic librarians are stressed by their direct job profile, enormous career progression demands and domestic imperatives. Unless they are timely equipped with the basics of stress management, they will continue to fall victim of stress-induced- illnesses and even death. The paper however warned academic librarians in Nigeria of the stressors in their career and outlined some stress remedies that may be of interest to them.

This study investigated the relationship between use of online library resources and student success at a small, teaching-focused, baccalaureate college. Researchers also measured whether library users were representative of the student population. Use of online library resources was a significant predictor of semester grade point average (GPA), one-term retention, and academic standing when controlling for high school GPA, gender, status as a first-generation college student, and Pell recipient status. Library users were representative of the campus in terms of gender, ethnicity, and first-generation status. There were significant differences in the number of users of library resources by age, Pell recipient status, enrollment status, major, academic level, and semester GPA.

In this study, we intend to observe how a strategic plan can be used as a risk management tool, in the scope of academic libraries. Risk is perceived by individuals and institutions when faced with environmental changes which threaten stability or integrity. In libraries, these changes show in structural alterations, that is, in decreasing human, material and financial resources, and this implies having to develop strategies to accommodate new situations. Inspired by concepts from the fields of management and psychology, this paper analyses risk management and strategic planning as an adaptive response to change. This idea is furthered with the case study of a university library, which shows how adapting to such challenges is possible. We report a management strategy which includes a SWOT analysis about the performance of the library, and the subsequent reorganization of fields of action and redefinition of goals and tasks. The strategy comprises all the efforts made by the library to deal with specific demands, both internal and external, which triggered stress situations and coping with them, revealing a successful adaptation in light of change. The purpose of this study was to assess digital literacy skills of 21 st century librarians in College Libraries in Anambra State. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The area of the study was Anambra State located in the South East Geopolitical Region of Nigeria. The population of the study comprised all the 23 practicing librarians in the four college libraries in Anambra State. The entire population was used because it was small and manageable. The questionnaire and an observation checklist were the research instruments used for data collection. The instrument has four sections, A, B, C and D. The instrument was validated by two experts from Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University library. Two research assistants were used for the study. Research consultations continue to be a valuable service offered by academic libraries for students who are able to visit the library, however, most students enrolled in online degree programs or considering enrollment have limited access to campus services. To address this, the authors designed and tested a virtual reference consultation service in their library for distance learners and graduate students.
