People-nearby applications (PNAs), such as Tinder and Badoo, help millions of users to make new social connections everyday. However, little is known about how PNAs support offline interactions or what application features are associated with offline encounters. Research suggests that these applications support the development of social capital, but the forms of social capital are unclear. We conducted interviews with 14 active PNA users to address these questions. Our results suggest that while existing PNA features such as filters, profile photos, and chat support online connections, most participants used non-PNA platforms to build mutual trust before meeting offline. In addition, PNA users developed two forms of social (informal and formal) and cultural capital (incorporated and symbolic). We offer insights into how PNAs and non-PNAs intersect to foster feelings of safety and trust prior to offline meetings, and we propose ways for PNAs to support the exchange of cultural and social capital.

With the popularity of new digital media, such as smartphones and tablets, many applications have been designed in order to help tourists at different moments of their trips. This study shows the creative process of designing an app for tourists. The design of this mobile app is a part of a project that aims to investigate the design of mobile apps for tourists and their implications for interaction design and information visualization fields. It also describes the method, the stages, and different approaches taken during the creative process. In addition, some related studies on designing such apps are reviewed. It finally shows some reflections on the possibilities, difficulties and challenges designers have while trying to create an innovative app for tourists.

In this paper we examine the possibilities for analyzing the behavior of library users. We point out that the softwares that we can use cannot fulfill library requirements. There are many data given for on-line searches in library systems hidden from the analyzers. After examining the possibilities and some log files produced by the library systems, we propose how log files could give more usable information for the semantic design of the intelligent library in the VirCA virtual collaboration system and of other on-line systems, too. These data can be applied as input information for intelligent systems in learning user searching behavior and help them predict user needs more precisely.

Distance collaboration tools are becoming increasingly important in order to maintain synergies between spatially distributed entities enabling effective cooperation over large distances. Virtual Reality (VR) technologies offer unique possibilities for the exchange of planning stages as well as for the identification and collective resolution of problems. This paper discusses the requirements of manufacturing engineers for distance collaboration tools and the challenges associated with the creation of such systems through a working prototype implemented in the VirCA NET framework. This pilot solution is a novel application in the field of VR-enhanced spatially distributed collaboration via shared virtual spaces using immersive visualization. Typical scenarios are provided to highlight the capabilities offered by VirCA NET. The paper identifies and classifies the challenges of distance collaboration from a cognitive infocommunications (CogInfoCom) perspective. The challenges are presented with respect to the theoretical background of CogIn-foCom engines and channels emphasising the link between virtual collaboration and the aim of CogInfoCom.

Design and development of production processes and their execution are nowadays spread all over the world. To ensure quality standards and to create synergies between spatially distributed entities, distance collaboration tools must be provided to allow cooperation even over large distances. The Virtual Reality (VR) is thereby offering beneficial capabilities to exchange dedicated planning stages, identify problems and solve them cooperatively. This paper introduces a new approach for distance collaboration, which enables users to work in a joint virtual space, nearly as if they were working together in-place. Therefore two full-immersive CAVE-like systems are interconnected using VirCA (Virtual Collaboration Arena). The paper describes the requirements of Mechanical Engineers towards distance collaboration tools and the technical challenges solved with the enhanced VirCA framework. This working prototype is one premier application in the field of spatially distributed collaboration. A typical use case scenario is provided to highlight the interaction and cooperation capabilities offered by VirCA NET.

Photorealistic virtual environments are crucial for developing and testing automated driving systems in a safe way during trials. As commercially available simulators are expensive and bulky, this paper presents a low-cost, extendable, and easy-to-use (LEE) virtual environment with the aim to highlight its utility for level 3 driving automation. In particular, an experiment is performed using the presented simulator to explore the influence of different variables regarding control transfer of the car after the system was driving autonomously in a highway scenario. The results show that the speed of the car at the time when the system needs to transfer the control to the human driver is critical.

Renault has been developing driving simulators for over 10 years. They are used for ergonomics and advanced engineering studies at Renault as well as for road traffic research, human factor studies and driver training in different labs and companies in Europe (especially in France, the UK, Sweden and Norway). These simulators use SGI and/or PC image generation technology with up to 6 graphics channels and motion seat or platforms for kinaesthetic rendering. The real time simulation software, SCANeR II version 1.3, currently includes -among otherssimulation session initialisation and monitoring, vehicle dynamics, traffic generation, visual and kinaesthetic modules. The traffic generation software allows the user (i.e. the experimenter) to describe and initiate real time traffic with autonomous vehicles. Microscopic simulations of road traffic are a typical application domain for Multi-Agent Systems. Indeed, the individual-based approach allows to take into account the diversity of behaviors so as to consider real situations. More recently, geographical databases provide environmental information under open formats, which offers the opportunity to design agent-based traffic simulators which can be continuously informed of changes in traffic conditions. The use of such data, together with the adaptability of MAS, allows the realization of decision support systems that are able to integrate environmental and behavioral modifications in a direct way, and compare various scenarios built from different hypotheses in terms of actors, behaviors, environment and flows. We describe here a modeling approach and a comprehensive process which lead to the development of such a tool.

Driving simulators are complex systems with growing importance in studies of driver behaviour and road and vehicle performances. In order to be convincing, a driving simulator must supply the conductor with the sensation of immersion in a typical environment of public ways. These typical environments are composed by a large amount of different vehicles, each one with its own unique behaviour and all of them interacting and competing. The development and implementation of so many different traffic elements is a complex problem. Each vehicle must be able to understand the environment traffic situation, to make decisions based on its knowledge about the road network and to react instantaneously to any unpredictable traffic event. This paper presents a behavior model used to drive autonomous vehicles in a realistic driving simulator. It can implement strictly autonomous vehicles, completely controlled elements, or mixed solutions with externally imposed medium time goals and short time autonomy. It can be configured to implement several different driving behaviors in order to simulate the diversity that can be found in real traffic with human drivers.

Information science has played an important role in computer science education in the last decades. The design of storing, retrieving and interacting with information is an obligatory part in development of numerous online services in our era. Therefore, many parts of information science are elementary components in the majors' curricula in computer science education. In this paper, we focus on a course on Information Architecture where students were introduced to the basics of information science. During the course, MaxWhere-an online virtual reality collaborative service-was used as a framework. In our research, our main goal was to develop the students' cognitive processes. The students' main task was to design and develop e-health services in virtual reality (VR) environment for impressing and persuading their future target audience to live a more environmentally conscious life or to live healthier. In this paper, we present some results of this experimental research: Students were motivated to create and design an inclusive project together that needed more work and knowledge from them than it had been planned. They were motivated to collaborate with their groupmates and a self-driven collaborative workflow was developed. They had to learn about the MaxWhere 3D VR system, and at the same time, they had to start to do research on their own projects. After a while, they found gaps in their designs that they wanted to fill in. As a consequence, the students had to deal with some theory and practice of marketing, e.g., they had to deal and work with buyer personas, with some other marketing aspects, and-of course-with some important parts of information science. They had to imagine their future customers and to develop VR environments for them that could have an impact on the users' behavior and lives. The design and development process resulted in and showed development in the students' cognitive processes.

In this paper we explore immersive street-level integration of social media content into collaborative virtual 3D city environments on two levels: i) public, where the virtual environment is populated with relevant social media content (e.g. Twitter and Facebook feeds of shops, non-governmetal organizations, the City organization); and ii) personal, where the virtual user, through his/her avatar, is able to access his/her personal social media feeds while immersed in the virtual city. We conducted a qualitative anticipated user experience study with 14 participants in four focus groups, who were asked to create designs of how they imagined social networking services could be integrated into virtual city environments. Further, participants were asked to comment on two visual concepts created by researchers. Results show that people appreciate the concept of having virtual cities populated with up-to-date content from social media services, but linking their own social media accounts is a more complex issue.

The semantic synthesis of intelligent space, emotional-behavioral modeling and cognitive infocommunications is a promising approach in the multidisciplinary field applied for ambient assisted living. The ambient assisted living application can be regarded as a complex cooperation and communication of different kinds of intelligent entities in a well-limited, semi-structured environment. The intelligent space aspect deals with the possible cooperation of intelligent entities as matching between needs and capabilities. The emotionalbehavioral modeling handles the internal states and attitudes of the entities. The cognitive info-communications aspect deals with communication situations and processes between the entities. The semantic information framework is intended to provide a synthesis of the different fields in order to unite the represented knowledge in the form of information transfer between the field scopes.

We present the Tokyo Virtual Living Lab, an experimental space for conducting controlled driving and travel studies. The virtual lab is based on 3D Internet technology and supports studies involving multiple users in the same shared space. This feature is crucial for analyzing interactive driving behaviors in future smart cities. The novelty of this work is two-fold. First, we developed a pipeline that takes free map data as input and outputs a semantically enriched graphical structure, called Navigation Network. Second, we built a Navigation Segment Agent that coordinates a Multiagent traffic simulator based on the Navigation Network and supports the integration of user controlled vehicles. This approach can significantly reduce the effort of preparing realistic driving behavior studies. To demonstrate the usefulness of our approach, we created a 3D model of a part of Tokyo and performed an experiment with human drivers in two conditions: ubiquitous eco-traffic and ‘normal’ traffic.

Through online social network analysis, the emergence (over time) of “trusted” users is investigated, by studying the evolution of topological and centrality measures of the network of trust within the overall social network. Large datasets of user activity are studied from Ciao and Epinions (two online platforms with an explicit notion of trust controlled by users), and Prosper (a micro-lending site where trust remains implicit). The implications of such findings are discussed, particularly regarding how to enable trust in online platforms and interaction, with implications for trust-based activities.

designed and primarily used by scientists for networking research and for exchanging information. Here we going to
implement 3D internet against 2D technology and present 3D methodology .

In this paper, we introduce a set of new visual representations for complex systems. These visual representations allow for the efficient description of systems that encapsulate a variety of components that can be merged together to form ensembles. These ensemble methods can outperform individual approaches. The whole operation of such systems can be better interpreted using visual tools. Thus, we introduce 3D graphical solutions to visualize the components (e.g. databases, energy functions, algorithms, and voting models) of the system together with their attributes, and also their possible relationships. For a case study, we consider a clinical screening system. As a sufficiently flexible and rich 3D visualization framework, we select the VirCA virtual collaboration arena. The created virtual space supports the manual design of applications from the components with testing them on different databases for the selected energy functions. Moreover, the user can get familiar with the applications generated automatically by machine learning and stochastic search algorithms.
