Abstract

The capture and sack of Istanbul by the Fourth Crusaders in 1204 ignited a great change in the Byzantine world. In the exile of about 57 years, the Byzantine Empire endeavored to survive as three dynasties centered at Nicaea, Trebizond and Epiros. As the Roman identity and institutions started to weaken when they had to leave "the Queen of the Cities" to the Latins, the Hellenic feelings started to gain in strength. These new circumstances also deeply influenced the Byzantine historiography. Our article will present the biography of Georgios Akropolites, a leading name in the 13 th century Byzantine historiography and an eye-witness of the transformation, and his work History (1203-1261). Besides, the first ten chapters of this work will also be translated into Turkish.
