Revivals are, by nature, a disruption in the church's status quo. The charismatic revivals of the 1990s, predominantly centered at Toronto Airport Christian Fellowship in Toronto, Canada, and Brownsville Assembly of God in Pensacola, Florida, touched many churches. Historically, revivals have had the positive fruit of restoring the very necessary experiential aspects of the Christian faith. At the same time, revivals have also included aberrations, errors, and excesses. The charismatic revivals of the 1990s were no exception.

The Charismatic Renewal is one of the most influential movements in 20th-century Christianity, particularly in how it has shaped Mainline Protestant denominations. Unlike the early days of Pentecostalism, which was often viewed as a marginalized movement practiced by the uneducated and the socially lower classes, the Charismatic Renewal brought the Pentecostal experience of the Holy Spirit into the heart of Mainline churches such as Episcopalian, Lutheran, Anglican, and Presbyterian traditions. The movement was characterized by speaking in tongues, prophecy, and other spiritual gifts becoming prevalent among clergy and congregants who had previously adhered to more formal and sacramental traditions. This paper explores the essential contributions of Charismatic Mainline churches to Pentecostal-Charismatic Christianity, focusing on the experiences of four key figures in the movement, the conditions within the churches that necessitated renewal, how intellectuals were received when they began to speak in tongues, and the denominational backgrounds of many converts.

These reflections on the Charismatic Movement arose out of talks given to the Methodist Aldersgate Renewal Fellowship in April 1985 and the Methodist Tamil Annual Conference Pastors School in August 1986. They have also been refined through sharing with congregations in Muar and Batu Pahat (Presbyterian) Sentul (Tamil Methodist) and Petaling Jaya (St Paul's Anglican and Good Hope Evangelical Lutheran) as well as with the students at Seminari Theoloji Malaysia who as usual suffer much from their lecturers struggling to ...

This paper explores the decline of spiritual fervor within Charismatic and Pentecostal movements, particularly in non-Pentecostal mainline churches and traditional Pentecostal denominations. It investigates the cultural, theological, and institutional factors contributing to this phenomenon, including secularization, materialism, the influence of the prosperity gospel, and internal disunity. The analysis highlights the role of gender dynamics, chaotic spiritual practices, and doctrinal conflicts, which have weakened the movements' spiritual vitality. Drawing from scholarly works by Allan Anderson, Walter Hollenweger, and Vinson Synan, the paper examines how these factors, combined with the effects of globalization and syncretism, have led to a spiritual decline. It concludes by suggesting that a return to early Pentecostal principles—such as authentic prayer, Spirit-led worship, and doctrinal coherence—is essential for renewing spiritual fervor in contemporary Charismatic churches.

o decades after the beginning of what we know at present as the 'Movement of Charismatic Renewal', 'Charismatic Movement' or 'Catholic ?" Pentecostal Movement' (inside the Roman Catholic Church), we can survey some elements of its brief history that will allow us to evaluate certain aspects of it. In particular we can examine the relationship between the Charismatic Renewal and social change; and I intend to analyze it from a Latin-American perspective This Renewal has affected both the Catholic and the Protestant churches, but in different ways and with unequal results. Inside Protestantism, the effects and consequences are not homogeneous and depend on internal and regional factors. Any generalization is inadequate and does not correspond to the complexity of the movement. And so we will look only at the more representative groups or situations. Our first aim will be to place the Charismatic Renewal in the social, political and religious context from whence it has appeared. Secondly we will try to depict its characteristics and distinctive teachings. Finally, we will analyze and evaluate its relationship with social change.
