Abstract Some More Thoughts on the Greek Basis for Leonardo Bruni’s Version of Plato's Phaedo (codes 136 and Bodmerianus Tubingensis Mb14) The prior condition of a translation is its source text, and the knowledge of this source is an essential factor for critical judgment. Many years ago the author of this article showed that the main Greek basis for Leonardo Bruni’s version of Plato's Phaedo is the ms. Bodmerianus 136, but he also assumed that a different source text might have been used. In this article that auxiliary source is now identified in the current ms. Tubingensis Mb 14. The Tübingen manuscript presents numerous corrections derived from Par. Gr. 1811, one of the manuscripts that Manuel Chrysoloras had made available to the students of his school in Florence, and was employed in turn, probably by Chrysoloras himself, to make corrections and changes in the Parisian manuscript. The chronology of the Phaedo version (aD 1405) provides a secure terminus ante quem for the availability and use of the Tubingensis in Florence. Thanks to the accurate comparison with the Greek text it is now possible to understand almost always when Bruni erred in interpreting or introduced more or less arbitrary variations in the original wording of Plato. It is also possible to better define the aims, difficulties and strategies of Bruni’s first oratory translation of one of Plato’s great dialogues.

A methodical observation of the use of (οὐκ) ἔμοιγε as an answer (“Yes” or “No”) in Plato suggests that it requires the presence of the pronoun σοι in the preceding question. Such a σοι is missing at Theaet. 152e 8, 189d 4 and Alc. 117a 11 and we have probably to restore it. A new emendation and a new distribution of the words between the speakers are also suggested respectively at Resp. 7, 535c 2 and Soph. 229b 1 – d 1.

L'immagine di Platone diffusa nel secolo scorso presso i filosofi di tradi-zione continentale o ermeneutica è prevalentemente negativa, o quantomeno assai controversa. Voci autorevoli hanno contribuito in diversi modi, magari anche contro le loro stesse intenzioni, a generare una diffidenza profonda nei confronti di questo pensatore, sino al punto di considerarlo, in qualche caso, come il principale nemico da abbattere per correggere le distorsioni, eticamen-te e politicamente non indifferenti, che hanno caratterizzato la storia mille-naria della filosofia occidentale. Una trentina di anni fa il filosofo americano Richard Bernstein ha ironicamente descritto il Platone metafisico e dualista come «il cattivo a cui possiamo imputare tutto ciò che in seguito è andato storto nella razionalità occidentale. Questo è il Platone che viene attaccato e "decostruito" da Nietzsche, Heidegger, Derrida, Rorty». Per poi aggiunge-re però che c'è anche l'"altro" Platone... che è il grande difensore del dialogo parlato e scritto-che è sempre aperto a nuove svolte e non conosce chiusura definitiva 1. Ai nomi qui citati da Bernstein ne possiamo facilmente aggiungere parecchi altri, come Popper, Deleuze, Strauss, Vattimo: anche se poi l'opposi-zione non è in tutti così univoca, e le valutazioni vanno fatte di volta in volta. Emblematico in proposito è il caso di Heidegger. Fino a che la mole cospicua dei corsi universitari d'anteguerra era poco o parzialmente nota, sul rapporto tra Platone e Heidegger dominava indisturbata la famigerata conferenza del 1942 sull'essenza della verità, l'unico studio sul filosofo ateniese pubblicato 1 R. No one in the history of thought could be a greater threat to the values of individual liberty, the right to private property, and equality enshrined in the American constitution than the apologist for a philosopher-king, noble lies, and propertyless guardian class».
