Fifty-five pieces of lava with impressions of prehistoric corn have recently been recoveredfrom NA 860, a small habitation site near Sunset Crater Volcano in northern Arizona. Archaeological, geological, and botanical information suggest that husked ears of corn were deliberately placed in the lava's path when the volcano erupted in the mid-to-late eleventh century A.D. Over 40 kg of basalt lava containing the hardened corn casts were then taken to NA 860 located 4 km away from the lava flow. At the site, the rocks underwent lithic reduction to expose the casts. We suggest that these "corn rocks" are indicative of ritual practices, perhaps serving as an offering made to appease the forces responsible for the eruption. Although both prehistoric and modern offerings are commonly associated with volcanoes in other parts of the world, this is the first evidence from the Southwest United States of possible ritual behavior related to volcanism.
The archaeology of townscapes can provide important information about cultural development and the transfer of settlement systems. This close examination of 17th-century settlement in northeastern New Jersey focuses on Woodbridge Township, Middlesex County, between 1669 and 1676. The study highlights the complexity of early colonial settlement systems in East Jersey and also examines the ways in which experimentation with Old World-and New England-style corporation settlement models; strong desires for land accumulation, power, and wealth; inheritance practices; and religion influenced English townscape development within northeastern New Jersey. The aspects outlined herein likely influenced the creation of other township-corporation settlements by New England immigrants to East New Jersey during the 17th century. These settlement patterns were markedly different than those developed through proprietary landgrant sales elsewhere in the colony.

This paper presents the results of an archaeological data recovered conducted in 2005 at the P. Tulane Site in Princeton Township, New Jersey. This site contained the remains of an early-nineteenth-century cottage occupied by numerous tenant farm laborers/general laborers, known during the eighteenth through early nineteenth-century as cottagers, and later, during the mid-nineteenth century, the home of a successful yeoman. Excavations offered data about a sparsely documented aspect of early-nineteenth-century New Jersey agrarian history: cottage holding. The data recovery and new historic research offered insights into early to mid-nineteenth-century central New Jersey cottager demographics, material culture, status, housing, and land use. This information was juxtaposed against data recovered from the site’s later occupation by a successful yeoman.

Introduction: The interpretations of how Early Iron Age settlements have been organised is still being debated across archaeologists today. Different archaeologists have different views on how Early Iron Age settlements were organised and what the reasons were behind the structure and layout of the settlements. In this essay I will aim to provide evidence for the organisations of Early Iron Age settlements and analyse how the evidence has been interpreted in the past and in the present. Firstly I will give a broad overview of the Iron Age, what it entails, and what makes it different to other archaeological time periods such as for example the Stone Age. Secondly I will explain the structure and logic behind Early Iron Age settlements and elaborate on the Central Cattle Pattern (also called the CCP). Thirdly I will provide theories on what influenced the logic, structure and layout of the Central Cattle Pattern (mostly based on Huffman’s theories of the Central Cattle Pattern). Fourth I will provide evidence for the organisation of Early Iron Age settlements, and I will do this by mainly focusing on evidence provided at Broederstroom and Kwagandaganda. Lastly I will analyse the methods and theories that archaeologists have used to substantiate their interpretations by analysing the Simple Analogy Approach and the Historical Approach.

Compiled with an Introduction by Christopher C. Fennell The Society for Historical Archaeology's "Perspectives from Historical Archaeology" publication series provides subject and regional readers on a variety of topics of interest to archaeologists and scholars in related fields. Each volume includes an introduction by the compiler that reviews historical archaeology's work on the topic. "Perspectives" volumes are available in both perfect bound and pdf formats, and sales proceeds benefit the Society's educational and research missions. Investigations of Craft and Industrial Enterprise, compiled by Chris Fennell, includes an introduction that reviews the field and 23 articles selected from the Historical Archaeology
