The Student Research (SRC) Program is sponsored by Microsoft Research For the past twenty-nine years the ACM Symposium on Applied Computing (SAC) has been a primary and international forum for applied computer scientists, computer engineers and application developers to gather, interact and present their work. The ACM Special Interest Group on Applied Computing (SIGAPP) is the sole sponsor of SAC. The conference proceedings are published by ACM and are also available online through ACM's Digital Library.

Abstract We briefly report on 5 years of successfully running the ACM Symposium on Applied Computing (SAC) track on Information Access and Retrieval (IAR). We believe the track plays a valuable role as a forum for the presentation of research and development work in Information Retrieval. The growing number of submissions indicates that there is a need for such forum.

The 26th Annual International Symposium on Computer and Information Science was held in London at the Royal Society, on 26–28 September 2011. The symposium included presentations of the papers in these proceedings which were selected from some 140 submission through a refereeing process carried out by both the programme committee members and additional referees. In addition there were several other invited papers and special sessions. Special thanks go to both the programme committee members and to the ref- erees, for the diligent efforts that they have made to select the best of the submitted papers, and then for their generous help to the authors so that they could improve the final versions through constructive suggestions and comments. The topics included in these proceedings cover timely topics such as Web Computing and Search, Data Engineering, Green ICT which aims at saving energy in information processing and communication systems, Wireless Networks, Computer Networks, Discovery Science, Computer Vision and Image Processing, Machine Learning, Agent Based Systems, Security and Safety, Modelling and Simulation, Architecture and Systems, and Algorithms. As computer science and engineering has matured, we see that the emphasis of much of the research in this conference turns towards the interaction between basic scientific problems and the important areas of application. In a way, this leads to a more exciting proceedings volume with broader appeal both for industry and for the research community.

Abstract: This report documents a broad program of basic and applied information processing research conducted by Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science. The Information Processing Technology Office of the Advanced Projects Agency (ARPA) supported this work during the period 1 August 1990 through 2 August 1993.

The LOTUS Corporation has made a generous donation to partially offset the cost of printing and distributing four issues of the Data Engineering bulletin. Data Engineering Bulletin is a quarterly publication of the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Data Engineering. its scope of interest Includes: data structures and models, access strategies, access control techniques, database architecture, database machines, Intelligent front ends • mass storage for very large databases, distributed database systems and techniques, database software design and implementation, database utilities, database security and related areas. Contribution to the Bulletin is hereby soiiclted. News Items, letters, technical papers, book reviews, meeting previews, summaries, case studies, etc., should be sent to the Editor. All letters to the Editor wIll be considered for publication unless accompanied by a request to the contrary. Technical papers are unrefereed. Opinions expressed In contributions are those of the mdi vidual author rather than the official position of the TC on Data Engineering, the IEEE Computer Society, or orga nizations with which the author may be affiliated. Membership in the Data Engineering Technical Committee is open to individuals who demonstrate willingness to actively participate in the various activities of the TC. A member of the IEEE Computer Society may join the TC as a full member. A non-member of the Computer Society may Join as a participating member, with approval from at least one officer of the TC. Both full members and participating members of the TC are entitled to receive the quarterly bulletin of the TC free of charge, until further notice. Message from the TC Chair. I would like to take this opportunity to give you a status report on our TC and to let you know of some plans that will affect our TC in the near future. In 1988, the IEEE Computer Society's Technical Activities Board (TAB) initiated an advertising campaign in IEEE Computer with a Special Section describing the TAB activities, especially those of the Technical Committees including our own, Data Engineering. From November 1988 through April, 1989 our membership grew by 55%, from 939 to 1455. Our TC has been active in sponsoring a number of Conference and Symposia, and our cooperation has been sought by several conferences and workshops. The TCDE is sponsoring or co-sponsoring the following conferences during 1988-1989:

During the past three years computer usage in the School of Engineering and Applied Science has changed dramatically. We have evolved from dependency on a single large main-frame facility (OAC) to workstation-based computing supported by a school-wide Local Support

The traditional information retrieval techniques does not meet the user's demand, so there is need to develop an efficient system for content based image retrieval (CBIR). In this paper method is proposed for an efficient CBIR system using Radial basis function (RBF) which can give better results than other existing CBIR. The proposed system use the Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) to extract the feature from the database. Illumination changes does not affect the system performance due to these SIFT features. These features generate keypoints. The distances between feature vectors of database and the query image are computed using the classifier RBF.

We present the design and implementation of "Context Aware Network Sockets" (CANS). CANS can be used for accessing services/resources in a, dynamically changing, wireless networked environment (a pervasive environment).

CACIC’12 was the eighteenth Congress in the CACIC series. It was organized by the School of Computer Science and Engineering at the Universidad Nacional del Sur. The Congress included 13 Workshops with 178 accepted papers, 5 Conferences, 2 invited tutorials, different meetings related with Computer Science Education (Professors, PhD students, Curricula) and an International School with 5 courses. CACIC 2012 was organized following the traditional Congress format, with 13 Workshops covering a diversity of dimensions of Computer Science Research. Each topic was supervised by a committee of 3-5 chairs of different Universities. The call for papers attracted a total of 302 submissions. An average of 2.5 review reports were collected for each paper, for a grand total of 752 review reports that involved about 410 different reviewers. A total of 178 full papers, involving 496 authors and 83 Universities, were accepted and 27 of them were selected for this book.Red de Universidades con Carr...

Data access costs contribute significantly to the execution time of applications with complex data structures. As the latency of memory accesses becomes high relative to processor cycle times, application performance is increasingly limited by memory performance. In some situations it may be reasonable to trade increased computation costs for reduced memory costs. The contributions of this paper are threefold: we provide a detailed analysis of the memory performance of a set of seven, memory-intensive ...

The Information Retrieval and Web Intelligence (IR-WI) research group is a research team at the Faculty of Information Technology, QUT, Brisbane, Australia. The IR-WI group participated in the Terabyte and Robust track at TREC 2005, both for the first time. For the Robust track we applied our existing information retrieval system that was originally designed for use with structured (XML) retrieval to the domain of document retrieval. For the Terabyte track we experimented with an open source IR system, Zettair and performed two types of experiments. First, we compared Zettair's performance on both a high-powered supercomputer and a distributed system across seven midrange personal computers. Second, we compared Zettair's performance when a standard TREC title is used, compared with a natural language query, and a query expanded with synonyms. We compare the systems both in terms of efficiency and retrieval performance. Our results indicate that the distributed system is faster than the supercomputer, while slightly decreasing retrieval performance, and that natural language queries also slightly decrease retrieval performance, while our query expansion technique significantly decreased performance.
