Alessandra Lorini and Duccio Basosi, eds. The volume approaches Cuba as a nation that hosts a convergence of extraordinary global developments and, in turn, projects itself onto the world's major cultural, political and economic processes. From different perspectives, ranging from architecture and music to politics and economics, the twenty-one essays presented here embrace the multifaceted interactions between Cuba and foreign imperial strategies during the 19th century, the troublesome formation of national political cultures in the first half of the 20th century, and the multiple global aspects of some of Cuba's choices from the Cold War to the first decade of the present century.
Heroes, Martyrs, and Political Messiahs in Revolutionary Cuba, 1946-1958, 2018
This introductory chapter briefly illustrates Cuba's underground revolutionary culture and the challenges it faced during Fulgencio Batista's regime. It argues that the “New Cuba” that allegedly emerged in January 1959 did not rise from the ground up. The seeds of revolutionary Cuba were not just planted in the years before, they had sprouted and flourished. This Cuba began to flourish in the late 1940s and came to fruition in the last months of 1958 when Cubans consumed, constructed, and helped craft the image of a generous, accountable, morally pure, and messianic revolutionary state that Fidel Castro was committed to lead. In addition to this, the chapter also delves into the political culture of 1940s Cuba.
Cuban Studies, 2020
This article examines the use of the term revolution in Cuban studies produced outside the island. The case is made that Cubanists tend to adopt the polysemous, enchanted, and propagandistic characterization of la Revolución projected by the Cuban state. A more critical—or disenchanted (Max Weber)—approach to the Cuban state’s key ideological theme would afford more clarity and better questions on the nature and periodization of the Cuban revolution, as well as on who gets what, when, and how in the island since the overthrow of Batista. The goal is not to propose a single interpretation of the Cuban revolution (neither possible nor desirable) but to unpack what is identified as an intellectually numbing trend, while calling for much more attention and discussions on a central yet neglected issue in Cuban studies.
