This is a great effort to summarize bright ideas about educational theory and practice, especially English language education and teaching, during the COVID-19 pandemic. This anthology book will be very useful for teachers, lecturers, students, and education practitioners, especially language education, to gain experience that can be directly practiced in online, face-to-face classes, or a combination of online and faceto-face. Hopefully, this small effort that has great benefits can be continued by IELA (Indonesian English Lecturer Association) in particular and seminar organizers in general to produce important writings containing theoretical and practical ideas that are useful for the advancement of education, especially language education in Indonesia. By sharing this knowledge and experience, we can transfer these smart ideas to fellow teachers and lecturers, researchers, and practitioners to be able to solve some teaching problems with this solution.

Communicative competence is the goal of language learning, for which students have to learn language in a real context; and it also becomes the focus of Curriculum 13 in Indonesia. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there are conflicts in realizing communicative competence for the students online. This study aims to identify conflicts faced by the teachers in integrating communicative language teaching method and online platforms used during the pandemic, as the lessons in long distance learnings. This study is qualitative with in-depth interview as the main data collection technique. The respondents of this study cover 137 senior high school teachers. The data is analyzed by identifying the relevant interplays between graduate competences, language learning methods, online platforms used, and conflicts on the teachers and students learning autonomously along pandemic. The findings show that there are conflicts among the teachers and students in implementing online communicative language teaching autonomously, since the method and the used online learning platforms are irrelevant and internet literacy and infrastructure are still poor. There must be comprehensive understanding and skills of the teachers and students in handling autonomous learning digitally along the pandemic including learning outcome, materials, learning methods and process, and testing the outcome. These conflicts bring about lessons of adaptability, collaboration, communication, and resilience, they have learned valuable skills that will serve them well in their future education and careers.

Inspired by the insightful contributions delivered during the First International Conference on New Trends and Emerging Approaches in English held in Procida in September 2022, this Special Issue of RILA collects original scholarly work which discusses some cogent themes regarding societal transformations and their consequential repercussions on education systems around the world. By highlighting the socially and historically constructed relationship between learners and the target language in shifting and developing contexts (Blommaert 2013, Balirano 2021), this Special Issue specifically addresses the complexities of the current linguistic landscape in which advances in ELT have replaced traditional notions of education, and introduced innovative ways of thinking and learning as individuals traverse local and global boundaries, occupying multiple online and offline spaces, while coping with the aftermath of post-pandemic times.
