What is mock data? Simulated data generated by a computer ( e.g. with MATLAB) Based on parameters entered by a researcher Useful for testing statistical models before gathering real world data

Teaching Statistics, 1992
This paper discusses an innovative approach for using live data generated through student projects or through experiments using student subjects. This live data set, in which the students have a vested interest, becomes the foundation upon which the learning of the statistical concepts is built.

This paper is for applied research scientists and any scientists who train students to do research. It consists of two parts: (1) an open door hands-on research training program that helped garner a US Presidential Award for Mentoring and election as Fellow, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS); (2) a Covid-19 Pandemic virtual research training program that provides readings and You Tubes for the students followed by an opportunity to develop new research ideas. The co-authors of this paper are the students who pioneered the virtual program. In the hands-on program of 263 students who reported their career outcomes to Steve, 52 achieved doctoral degrees and became professors and researchers, 62 became M. D.s or M. D.-Ph. D.s, 33 became dentists, 17 pharmacists, 97 became scientists in research and/or education and 2 became lawyers. Many of the students co-authored lab published papers, abstracts and national poster presentations. The program’s success resulted ...

Real life data are usually used in statistics teaching. For illustration of statistical methods, simulated data with known statistical properties are more suitable. Computer simulations and examples on simulated data can sometimes be used instead of proofs. When the methods are tested and familiarized on data with known properties, they can be effectively used on real life data with unknown Structure and properties.

Over the last decade, the use of real world projects in introductory statistics courses has increased in popularity. Real world projects provide students with an opportunity to learn the entire process of a statistical investigation. Such projects fit the principles of active ...

With unprecedented and growing interest in data science education, there are limited educator materials that provide meaningful opportunities for learners to practice statistical thinking, as defined by Wild and Pfannkuch [1], with messy data addressing real-world challenges. As a solution, Nolan and Speed [2] advocated for bringing applications to the forefront in undergraduate statistics curriculum with the use of in-depth case studies to encourage and develop statistical thinking in the classroom. Limitations to this approach include the significant time investment required to develop a case study-namely, to select a motivating question and to create an illustrative data analysisand the domain expertise needed. As a result, case studies based on realistic challenges, not toy examples, are scarce. To address this, we developed the Open Case Studies (opencasestudies.org) project, which offers a new statistical and data science education case study model. This educational resource provides self-contained, multimodal, peer-reviewed, and open-source guides (or case studies) from real-world examples for active experiences of complete data analyses. We developed an educator's guide describing how to most effectively use the case studies, how to modify and adapt components of the case studies in the classroom, and how to contribute new case studies. (opencasestudies.org/OCS Guide).

The usefulness of research in T&I training institutions is not a matter of course, and some efforts to find the optimum cost/benefit ratio in each environment is desirable. Gains can be sought in modest findings, enhanced reasoning skills and increased familiarity with scientific texts for students, and in higher academic status for the relevant institutions. Student research should not demand unreasonable investment in time and efforts. Students should benefit from close guidance, and collective work may have a multiplier effect on the benefit to be reaped from their investment. Empirical studies may be generally more suited to the students’ needs than theoretical work, and interdisciplinary projects should be contemplated with caution. Potentially useful projects in the T&I training environment can be sought inter alia in the following axes: literature analysis, language exploration, information loss and errors in Translation, Translation strategies, training and learning, quality...
