This paper explores the origin of the term 'hobbit', popularized by J.R.R. Tolkien, asserting that a Welsh agricultural measure closely resembles the word more than previously considered sources. Citing Tolkien's reflections on his inspiration, the analysis suggests that either childhood experiences in Wales or scholarly influences contributed to the emergence of 'hobbit' in his work. The paper advocates for recognition of the Welsh term in discussions about Tolkien's linguistic creativity.

The writing style of J.R.R. Tolkien is seldom given much attention in literary critical discourse. His use of language has been dismissed by many critics as simple and banal. My thesis, by considering how Tolkien's self-declared views on language and style may be relevant to his own stylistic choices, suggests how Tolkien might want his readers to adopt a new mode of perception in his fictions -to see things with a fresh eye. I focus on Tolkien's two most widely known works of fiction: The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
