The special place George Steiner gives to music in his book "Real Presences" offers suggestions for a cross-curricular exploration of some aspects of his aesthetics in the classroom. The roots in early Romantic music aesthetics can be pointed out. And examples from the reception history of Beethoven's fifth symphony can be taken as a starting point to think about different ways of communicating about and in music.

While the genuine critical music education of the 1960ies and 1970ies has more or less vanished, the article asks for possibilities of reformulating basic insights of Critical Theory for present music education. The result is much more sceptical in terms of practical application than former approaches used to be. Instead, the article suggests more critical analyses of specific pathologies and paradoxes of music education today, based on the experience of social negativity. (DIPF/Orig.)

In this paper, I provide resources for designing university courses that focus on teaching how to approach philosophical research in music education. I explain how the skills of argumentation and conceptual analysis could be trained and how they might be applied to writing an essay. In addition, I make suggestions for the organization of contents within the course structure and refer to further reading and materials.
