This work explores the emotional and spiritual significance of the seven last words of Jesus Christ as expressed through a musical composition. The piece incorporates motivic ideas and varying tempos to reflect the intensity of Jesus' final sayings and the surrounding atmosphere. Although inspired by tenebrae services, the work is intended as a standalone piece rather than for practical use in a service.

A historical theological assessment of the modern understanding of Jesus' fourth cry from the cross. The study examines modern teachings alongside the teachings of the early church in order to see what if any differences exist between the two. Having examined the two views, the study offers a critique of both views and suggests reasons for the differences in interpretations. The conclusion is that the modern opinion is based more on speculation than biblical or logical evidence. In addition the study shows that modern interpreters, as opposed to the ancients, is unmoored from traditional theological restraints. Thus Davis concludes that contemporary views of Christ’s death are often dishonoring to the sacrifice and overly romantic about the sin. Instead, he argues that we must take a more careful look at the scripture used to defend the modern view, acknowledge the theological boundaries of speculation, and appreciate the beauty of the person of Jesus in His substitutionary role. Rather than focusing on the extend of suffering Jesus endured, Davis suggests that the proper emphasis is on the person of the God-man himself in the role of sacrifice for our sin.
