This article examines the way that weddings are portrayed in contemporary series fiction for girls, in particular Ann M. Martin's The Baby-sitters Club and Phyllis Reynolds Naylor's Alice books. It argues that, while weddings in these novels offer the protagonists supporting roles in compelling family dramas, they also provide few opportunities to deviate from a prefabricated script. Inclusion in the family wedding experience is predicated on the tacit acceptance of fairy tale romance and enthusiastic participation in the rituals of consumption , both of which emphasize a constrictive, heteronormative view of life and love.

By MICHAEL WILDING pHRISTINA STEAD was born in Rockdale in 1902; in 1928, when she was twenty-six, she left Sydney for Europe, and has spent her life since there and in America. As an expatriate she has received little critical notice or readership in Australia, and it is only now that her books have been published in the country of her birth. 1 "Her association with Australia is thus incidental to her career abroad," Frederick Macartney wrote in his Australian Literature (1956). It is a questionable statement, since arguably her formative years were spent in Australia, and the material for her novels comes very much from them. Randall Jarrell, in his introduction to The Man Who Loved Children (London, 1966), remarked on "her having created from an Australian memory an American reality". Seven Poor Men of Sydney is set wholly in Australia, and over half of For Love Alone is. R. G. Geering in his introduction to the former points out that there are stories with Australian settings in The Salzburg Tales: he claims there are only four-"The Triskelion", "Morpeth Tower", "On the Road", and "Day of Wrath"; but "Silk-shirt" is surely set in Sydneyin an office in "Bridge Street" next to "the park, which is a triangle, and small enough to put in one's pocket"; a tramp in the park even says "It is cold, mate". And "Fair Women" (with its references to kangaroo grass, gullies and boundary riders) and the Centenarist's first tale on the sixth day seem also to have Australian settings. Seven Poor Men of Sydney and For Love Alone can profitably be discussed together, not merely because they share an Australian setting, but because they have thematic concerns in common, and because the later book to some degree restates the themes of the earlier one, and offers a development from them. Drawing on theology, in this book I want to suggest a new definition of the romance novel to complement other definitions which focus on structural elements: modern popular romances are novels whose authors have assumed pastoral roles, offering hope to their readers through works which propagate faith in the goodness and durability of love.
