Abstract

Repetition is one of the widely employed stylistic techniques by Yoruba literary writers. This paper undertakes a study of repetition in order to highlight its stylistic and communicative potentials. The aim basically is to extract, interpret and analyse repetitions using Hallidayan Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) given that it is a function-based theory for interpreting texts, and modelling performance, which is bordered with meaning, function and language in use. Six Yoruba literary texts: two prose works-Delano's Loio Ojoun and Olabimtan's Kekere Ekun\ two drama texts-Faleti's Basorun Gaa and Owolabi's Lisabi Agbongbo Akala; and two poetry texts-Abimbola's Oju Odu Mereerindinldgun and Olabimtan's Akojopo Ewi Abalaye dti Ewi Apilekp. Findings reveal that full repetition intensifies the idea of the repeated sentences, thereby establishing the fact that same idea is repeated as often as the sentences are repeated, partial repetition projects elegant variation of semantically correspondent items, lexical repetition creates cohesive link and obviates ambiguity, it also involves preponderance of a particular word. Semantic repetition symbolizes intensification and reduplication of structure with a variation of meaning, thereby giving room to deviation which spices a work of art, while phonetic repetition focuses and intensifies vowel and consonant sounds. The paper concludes that stylistically, repetitions contribute to aesthetics and poetic elegance of literary texts.
