SAVOLDO E LA FORTUNA DI GIACOBBE

2019, SAGGI E MEMORIE DI STORIA DELL'ARTE

The subject of Giovanni Gerolamo Savoldo’s Shepherd with a flute (Los Angeles, J.P. Getty Museum) has not yet been identified. This article attempts to link Savoldo’s painting to a tradition that legitimised the performative effects of the imagination with an episode from the story of Jacob related in the book of Genesis. The painting is one of the first occurrences to appear in a chamber context of a subject that would become widespread, particularly in the seventeenth century, because of its multiple applications.
