The presented publication is a collection of 13 articles which are devoted to various forms of material and social ostentation, viewed over a long period from the end of the twelfth century to the fi rst half of the nineteenth century. This is interdisciplinary research with the authors including both historians of various epochs, and archaeologists as well as cultural historians. The studies cover the area of East-Central Europe. The greatest attention is devoted to the burgher elites (articles by Małgorzata Chorowska, Grzegorz P. Bąbiak, Edmund Kizik, Katerina Jisova, Martin Nodl). The authors concentrate on an analysis of the forms of ostentation amongst the Wrocław, Gdańsk burghers as well as that of Czech cities and towns. Those articles that deal with the aristocracy and gentry (Leszek Kajzer, Marcin R. Pauk, Monika Saczyńska, Jerzy Dygdała, Jarosław Dumasowski) examine the problem of magnate clientele, as well as the ostentation of the riches (e.g. through house decor) displayed by the new gentry. Ewa Wółkiewicz and Dariusz Główka have devoted their research to clergy elites; the former analysing the form of organisation of the Episcopal curia, while the latter an evaluation of the standard of living enjoyed by bishops in the Commonwealth of the eighteenth century. This conference was set up in a different format compared to earlier events, for it concerned not only the early modern epoch but also that of the late Middle Ages and the nineteenth century. Histories of archaeology in Central – East Europe (1848-1918). Proceedings of the international conference “Adalbert Cserni and his contemporaries. The pioneers of urban archaeology in Alba Iulia and beyond” , 2017

This paper presents the life of an intellectual from a provincial town of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, who, despite the financial risks, sacrificed his carrier as a lawyer and dedicated his life to save the material heritage of Baranya county. By collecting the archaeological finds of the region, he established a rich private collection which later constituted the basis of the City Museum from Pécs. Beside his activity as an antiquarian collector, he also participated personally in excavations, although our sources regarding his field-work are very limited. Even if he was aware of the limits of his archaeological knowledge, he published the first comprehensive synthesis on the archaeology of Baranya and Pécs. Juhász published regularly in the Archaeological Bulletin (Archaeológiai Értesitő) and local journals as well. Due to his popularizing articles, he became a local “authority” in Pécs, the “archaeologist of the city”, asked many times to assist rescue excavations. Unfortunately, the most renowned archaeologists from Hungary never accepted him as an academic researcher. Six years before the City Museum was founded, he opened his private collection for the greater public. His donation of 6800 objects–among them a significant numismatic collection–constitute the basic of the local City Museum. Despite of his founding role in the local archaeological research, his name was mentioned only in a short Encyclopedia entry. Because there was no official testimony left from him, the analysis of his life and academic heritage can only be based on indirect sources from archives. The main aim of this paper is to fill the lacuna left by former historiography and to commemorate, at the same time, the 175th year of his birth.

V semestru školního roku 1967-1968 přednášel na téma Výtvarná a technická stránka muzejní práce na Filozofické fakultě UK, kde v roce 1967 vzniklo Středisko pro výuku muzeologie při Národním muzeu v Praze.

Studia ofi arowane Profesorowi Januszowi Tandeckiemu w sześćdziesiątą piątą rocznicę urodzin [Pragmatic literacy -Editing of historical sources -Archive studies: Studies in honour of Professor Janusz Tandecki on the 65th anniversary of his birth], Towarzystwo Naukowe w Toruniu, Toruń, 2015, 706 pp., index, ills. This extensive publication, compiled in honour of Professor Janusz Tandecki on his 65th anniversary, contains a comprehensive biographical note, a bibliography, and a list of studies written under Tandecki's scholarly supervision. Eight of the thirty-fi ve essays are in German. The texts are pretty varied, ranging from scientifi c articles to source editions, and chronologically covering the Middle Ages, the modern era as well as our day; grouped into units, they correspond with the notions specifi ed in the book's title. The unit on 'Pragmatic literacy' discusses lay assessors' registers (Żaneta Bonczkowska and Sławomir Jóźwiak) and peasants' last wills (Janusz Łosowski), among others. 'Archive studies' includes essays on the chancellery at Nowa Wieś near Cracow (Agnieszka Bartoszewicz), methodology of editing of Old Polish archive resources (Waldemar Chorążyczewski), and scientifi c activities of the State Archives in Toruń (Wiesława Kwiatkowska). The section focused on 'Editing of historical sources' tells us about the epitaph of Boleslaus the Brave (Tomasz Jasiński) and the role of photographic documentation in editions of epigraphic texts (Joachim Zdrenka).
