This paper examines the print media and the challenges posed by the social media. It is no doubt that the social media has altered the news gathering and processing paradigm but the print medium remain relevant in news dissemination. The study is anchored on technology determinism theory by Marshall McLuhan. The theory states that media technologies shape how we as individuals in a society think, feel act and how a society operates as we move from one technology age to another. In another way, McLuhan predicted that we would be in the midst of a revolution, and that the world will never be the same due to the advance in technology. Scholarly journals and conference papers formed the sources for secondary data for this study. Findings from the study reveal that the new media have caused the print media, particularly the newspaper a huge lost in revenue and advertisement. The study also discovered that the social media have altered the traditional gatekeeping theory of the print media...

Growth of the Internet is reshaping several industries, including media. Media visionary Marshall McLuhan described Internet as a cool technology which will encourage interactivity, participation and contribution. This study aims at remembering some of his predictions and situating India in his idea of global village. Use of social media which is gaining acceptance among journalists and editors for professional use is analyzed with the help of a survey. Factor analysis was applied to understand the overall usage of social media for best journalistic practices. Social media beliefs and uses were major categories. The study found that a digital-age journalist is expected to go beyond writing and reporting to finding more innovative ways to sell news stories on multiple platforms. Shift in the roles and responsibilities of reporters and editors lead to this empirical study. The study uses technological determinism to confirm McLuhan's prediction of technology as an extension of body and media as an extension of human psyche by offering a conclusion that social media is an extension of journalists.
The rise of social media comes with a number of overlapping consequences for news organizations around the world. These consequences vary from changes in methodology, such as the use of user generated content and participatory journalism1, to changes in business strategies, such as online subscriptions. Agreeing with Marshall McLuhan’s notion of ‘the medium is the message’ (McLuhan 1967), the change from reading news on paper to consuming news online through different media channels, is a drastic change. The medium through which news is received changed and therefore the message itself changed. This paper focuses on one specific change, namely the change in the content provided by a news organization.

It was found that (66.8%) respondents said that mass communication is efficient in the digital communication era, (48.8%) respondents said that mass communication is effective because of their news localization in this digital communication era, (66.8%) respondents maintained that digital communication has influence in news reporting because of its global reach in this digital communication era, (27.6%) respondents said that mass communication has the pace for wide reach in this digital communication era, and (26.3%) respondents, which is the majority, said that digital technologies aid mass communication to carry out investigations in this digital communication era. Some of the recommendations are: Journalists should always be abreast of news events in society and not report stale news. Journalists should also get breaking news from social media and other digital or virtual-enabled platforms and carry out investigations for more details before reporting the news. Media houses should strive to employ staff with more skills on how to explore virtual or digital technologies to enable them to be updated with events.

The advent of new media has posed a challenge to conventional media. Their effect, for example, is felt on the circulation of print newspapers, especially in the USA. However in Malaysia, the effect of the new media on conventional media is still manageable. Malaysian newspapers still attract advertising dollars even with the presence of online newspapers. The two reinforce each other. Thus, in this paper, we argue that the presence of the Internet will not replace newspapers, just as radio did not replace newspapers and television. This paper will look at the present situation of conventional media, especially print newspapers vis-a-vis. the new media in Malaysia. We believe that the layout of newspapers here may change, but the content is still in the form of news. Even though the conventional media have their own online versions, they have not fully embraced the new technology. Even if there is a drop in circulation, it would be because the younger generation prefer the new media...
Mediamorphosis refers to the “transformation of communication media, as a result of the complex interplay of social and technological innovations, perceived needs and competitive and political pressures,” News consumption today is not the same as pre-satellite news when people waited for their morning papers or sat down at an appointed time for the evening news on television. News consumption today is not the same as pre-internet news when people tune in to events happening around the world through 24-hour television news channels. More recently, a growing number of readers, viewers and listeners are going online for their news. Television, newspapers and radio are still here but there is a growing competition from interactive online media.

The mass media industry particularly print media in Indonesia comes under heavy pressure to survive in the era of digital disruption. High printing costs, coupled with high distribution costs and employee salaries have caused difficulties for print media companies to maintain their businesses. Analogic technology, the old ways of production, distribution, consume and economic fundaments of the mass-media industry are left behind by the new demands and requirements of the creative economy in the digitalization context of the mass-media system. In fact, not only mass-media goes through this transformation, but the whole society. The implications of the digital era are far long to be over and they will affect all mass-media segments: written press, audiovisual, on-line press and social media. The economic aspects, as well as the technical ones, editorial, distribution and final consumers aspects, all will be different from what we experienced in media industry until digitalization. The question is, are we ready to enter into a new economy: the digital economy? Are we ready to enter into a new culture: the digital culture? We entered in the smart world, but do we understand what is happening? The editorial teams that experience a fundamental change of thinking, will be able t...
