Aim: Different proteins have different roles in various diseases. Argyrophilic nucleolar organising region associated proteins (AgNORs) are synthesized from secondary constriction of acrocentric chromosome interested in a variety of diseases including thyroid disorders. Our aim was the comparison of the AgNOR count and AgNOR surface area/total nuclear surface area (NORa/TNa) proportions to different sex and age in cases with cystic nodular goitre. Materials and Methods: Twenty female (age range 26-78) and male (age range 2679) whose fine needle aspiration (FNA) materials were compatible with cystic nodular goitre were included in the study. Those biopsy materials were stained for AgNOR detection according to a specific protocol. 100 nuclei per individual have been evaluated, and both AgNOR count and NORa/TNa values of individual cells were detected for each group. Results: Female patients with cystic nodular goitre had not significantly (p=0.131) higher AgNOR count (2.05±0.46%) and ...

Hypothyroidism is one of the common diseases worldwide that occurs when the thyroid gland is unable to produce enough thyroid hormone for the body's metabolic needs. Thyroid hormones play a critical role in the metabolic activity of the brain, and hypothyroidism has important effects on neuropsychiatric function. The incidence of depressive syndrome is higher in patients with hypothyroidism. However, the mechanism of depression and other psychiatric disorders caused by hypothyroidism is stil unclear. The symptomatic manifestations of depression are diverse and it is possible to model many of them in experimental animal models. Studies have shown that hypothyroid animals are more likely to develop depression like behaviors when compared to euthyroid controls. In these studies, a much longer immobility time was observed in the forced swim test in hypothyroid rats. It has been suggested that neurotransmitter systems in the brain, especially serotonin, are involved in the mechanism ...

Objectives: Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is the gold standard in the management of thyroid nodules and specimen should be obtained from dominant nodule. In our study, we aimed to compare the FNAB and histopathology results of dominant and non-dominant nodules and to evaluate the association between nodule size and histopathology results in patients with MNG. Materials and methods: Between 2009 and 2010, 197 cases who had diagnosed MNG were analyzed. These cases were performed FNAB from both dominant nodule and non-dominant nodule. 26 patients with inadequate cytological results were excluded and 171 cases were included in the analysis. Malignant ultrasonographic (US) features were defined as showing marked hypoechogenicity, microcalcifications, solid structure and not having peripheral halo. Results: No statistically significant difference was observed between malign cytology and suspected cytology ratios of dominant nodules and non-dominant nodules (p=0.083). Malignancy rates were higher at dominant nodules not having peripheral halo and non-dominant nodules including microcalcification at US. Also statistically significant difference was not observed (p=0.485) between malign histopathology rates of dominant and non-dominant nodules after surgery. Conclusions: According to cytological and histopathological results of patients with MNG, there was no significant difference between the malignancy ratio of dominant and non-dominant nodules. There is no obvious correlation between malignancy and nodule size in patients with MNG. We think that FNAB obtained not from only dominant nodules but also nodules with suspicious features of malignancy is necessary for most accurate diagnosis.

Thyroid nodule refers to lesions originating from follicular cells and radiologically differentiated from thyroid parenchyma. It is more common in women and its frequency increases with age. In Ultrasonography (USG) scans, nodules are detected in 20-67% in thyroid. Carcinoma develops from 7-15% of thyroid nodules. TSH should be seen from patients with thyroid nodules and thyroid USG should be requested. FNA should be requested from patients according to thyroid USG features. Thyroid FNA results are evaluated according to the Bethesda classification. Treatment for nodule is planned according to Fine needle Aspiration biopsy (FNAB) results, clinical features of the patient, USG findings and molecular tests. In this article, the approach to thyroid nodule is discussed with current literature.

As with other diseases, the examination of genetic factors for the diagnosis and treatment of psychological diseases is an important issue. Monoamine oxidase (MAO) enzyme plays an important role in the etiology of various neurological diseases. Therefore, the examination of the gene group which encoding the MAO enzyme has an important role in the research of neuropsychology and clinical psychology. Monoamine oxidase A (MAOA), a regulator of monoamine neurotransmitters in the brain, has been one of the most prominent genes in gene-environment interaction studies, especially with regard to central nervous system disorders. Depression is one of the mood disorders mentioned in this thesis. There is a long period of time, where the person is severely depressed, rather than a bad emotional state or sadness. Anxiety with other mood disorders is accompanied by psychological problems and is a fundamental disorder at the root of many psychopathological forms. Anxiety within the normal range serves as an activating feeling for the individual, while an abnormal level of anxiety disturbs the personal, social, academic or professional functioning of the individual. This mood disorder causes the person to move away from his / her social environment and this leads to the inability to control of emotional changes. Our finding here (our hypothesis) is to find a genetic marker that governs the criteria for psychology for depression and anxiety from those who are in a state of state of affairs. The candidate polymorphic gene region for this pilot study is the MAOA isoform. We used the universally accepted back depression and anxiety scale for the emergence of mood disorders. Our hypothesis is to gain significance between MAOA and depression and anxiety. MAOA-VNTR gene and Back Depression and Back Anxiety scale tests. The selected population is a group of 102 people composed of individuals aged 18-25 years. Due to the location of the selected gene region in the chromosome, the population is divided into two groups based on gender. According to the statistical analysis, the results of back-depression and back-anxiety tests and the results of genetic diagnosis are obtained in male subjects whereas in women, no significant results could be obtained.
