The aim of this study has been to identify English language needs of Alkan, Kiyamed and Gambi Medical colleges in Bahir Dar town. Three hundred students and five teachers, and five executive bodies of each of the medical colleges and the Amhara Bureau of Education and Health Bureau had participated in the study. The methods of data collection were semistructured questionnaire, semi-structured interview and document analysis. The data collection methods were referring to the language skills, language use, language testing, teaching methods, and other related issues to ESP (English for Academic Purposes). Both descriptive and inferential statistics had been employed in analyzing the raw data collected. Quota and random, comprehensive, and purposive samplings were used to the students, to the teachers and executive bodies respectively. The result shows that speaking and reading are favorite skills of the students while the teachers recommend speaking and writing as the most important skills to medical students. Reported speech, communicative activities and tense types were found the grammatical and functional language needs of the students. The teachers and the students prescribe the need of learning ESP for the best possible English use in their field of study while the executive bodies suggested GPE. Using varying items in testing (depending on their needs) is recommended to meet the diversified needs of the students. Thus, the colleges and Bureau of education and Bureau of Health need to emphasis the need of the students and have to revise the present day materials in light with the students needs.

This research aims to identify the students’ prospective professional need in learning English writing skills, to identify the style of learning that students preferred in learning English writing skills, and to reveal the incompetent that students need to improve in writing. This study required stratification that minimizes sampling errors to zero level. In this study, the 140 students from the second grade were chosen to be the participant. The questionnaire was used to be instruments to get the responses from the students about the learning needs. This study found that students need writing sentences correctly in learning English writing. Regarding to ASEAN Economic Community and also local wisdom, School of Health Sciences (STIKes) of Kepanjen, Malang has designed new mission that it will hold professional and competitive learning process to meet demands of health workers in local area, national even international. So that, it needs a way to design English for nursing course appropriate with students' needs and the latest trend. Thus, need analysis become primary key to design syllabus and materials easily. This research aims to describe the need analysis of English for specific purposes (ESP) for nursing department which focuses on target analysis and learning need. Data were collected by distributing questionnaire and also interview. Before distributing questionnaire, students in second semester was given pre-test and questionnaire to gather information from undergraduate nursing students in the second and sixth semester, diploma III nursing students in fourth semester and nursing lectures who have working experience in aboard about their experience learning English and the need of English in work place. ESP (English for Specific Purposes) ensures designing courses to meet learners’ needs. Two vital devices of determining the needs are target needs and learning needs. The term target needs refers to what learners need to do in the target situation. It consists of three components- necessities, lacks, and wants. Learning needs are what learners need to do in order to learn. In designing an English course for the medical students, the research has focused on target needs and learning needs along with necessities, lacks, and wants. English class in Health Promotion Department faced many obstacles. Those might be related to low English proficiency students, inappropriate learning materials and the ignorance of need analysis. To overcome the obstacles, need analysis is regarded as the most crucial stage. It covered a wide range of activities coping with either the students' learning needs or their target needs and would begin by analyzing the needs of curriculum demand. It is known as needs analysis. Needs analysis is assumed as the starting point to choose the suitable subject material to fulfill the demand of work field. Therefore, an evaluation of teaching materials based on the needs of Health Promotion Department Students at Health Polytechnic of Padang is required to conduct as the purpose of this research.This research was designed as a survey research. It involved 107 respondents who registered as all active students of Health Promotion Department from the first until the third year; enroll 2017-2019 academic years. The data were collected through questionnaire and observation document. The data was analyzed by using quantitative and qualitative method. The questionnaire was analyzed by using quantitative method, meanwhile document observation from the syllabus and questionnaire from the students were analyzed by using qualitative. The findings of this research concluded that the teaching materials on the syllabus of Health Promotion Department Padang have been enough appropriate with the students' need in short-term (during study process); and long-term (for working life); it was proven by, or a half of them have been appropriate. However, the implementation of the four skills of English has been not appropriate applied yet, since the teaching materials gave for reading more. Teaching English with specific topic that related to the students' major for all language skills would make them become more enthusiastic. This would be a recommendation to the institution, curriculum designer and course designer to consider the result of this research. The new syllabus and module should be recommended.

The purpose of this current study is to investigate the academic English language needs of medical sciences foundation students at the Center For Foundation Studies, International Islamic University Malaysia. 200 foundation students who would be majoring in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences programs as well as 20 ESL and Science lecturers were involved in this study. Based on two comprehensive needs analysis approaches - Target Situation Analysis (TSA) and Present Situation Analysis (PSA), data were collected using both the quantitative and qualitative research methods via two sets of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The results revealed several important findings. It was found that there were some inconsistencies in perceptions between the lecturers and students in terms of students’ difficulties in listening, reading and writing. As it is the case in many other majors, the need to become proficient in English is crucial for medical professionals mainly because they need to keep their knowledge and skills up-to-date, which requires them to follow recent changes and developments in the profession both in and out of the country. In this regard, as the language of science, English also dominates the literature in medicine. For this reason, to what extent medical professionals need English language skills both professionally and personally is a matter of concern for language teaching professionals. With this in mind, the current study examines English language needs of faculty members (FMs) and postgraduate assistants (PGAs) working at Faculty of Medicine at a state university in Turkey. 29 PGAs and 26 FMs from various departments responded to a 26-item, 4-point Likert scale assessing their needs on four macro skills; listening, reading, speaking, and writing complemented by micro skills. The results mainly revealed that on a professional basis, the FMs had stronger perceptions regarding their language needs than the PGAs did, while the PGAs' perceptions of personal needs for reading and writing were found to be stronger than the FMs'. Additionally, the perceptions of both participant groups regarding their personal language needs were slightly lower than their professional ones, which may stem from the fact that being demanding and competitive, a medical career requires high standards to attain professional achievements where external drives and forces become more significant.

The study was conducted primarily to find out the psycho-social needs of the students, and secondarily to validate the relevance of the current programs of the university Guidance Services. Four need-components postulated by Villar, Imelda VJ (2007): Self-Development (SD), Family Relationship (FR), Social Responsibility (SR) and Studies (S) were measured using a five-point scale. A descriptive survey design in quantitative-qualitative approach was used. There were 1,923 student enrolled during the first semester of school year, 1,267 or 65.9% participated in the four-month duration of the study. Health and Arts, Sciences and Education, however are more concern of their ability to discuss problems and considered relationship with siblings as secondary. College of Criminology and Short Courses are very concern on the marital problems of their parents. All academic departments with an overall Weighted Mean of 4.25 (AWM: 4.25) gave prime importance and rated ways and means on how to " understand the lessons " as Extremely Important (EI) endeavour that requires a priority concern from the Guidance Services of the university.
